Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

The thing about a franchise like McDonalds is that you can go to any outlet and knows exactly what to expect. A few years ago I toured Turkey and Greece. After 3 weeks of lamb kabobs and souvlaki I was desperate for something familiar. When I got back to Athens I went straight to the McDonalds on Syntagma Square and ordered a Big Mac meal. It was delicious and exactly what I wanted.

Movie Franchises operate in the same way. A movie with a new idea, or state of the art effects will be successful. It becomes a franchise when the studio orders sequels. The marching orders are to make the sequel more of the same. The hero is never in any real danger, otherwise who will star in the next sequel.

When George Lucas and Steven Spielberg reinvented the 1930s serial adventure with Indiana Jones, a new iconic hero was born. Four sequels followed over the next 42 years.

Of course, like everyone else I loved Raiders of the Lost Ark. I don’t remember the details of Temple of Doom except that the excessive violence gave birth to the PG13 rating (and Spielberg himself hated it). Last Crusade was fun, with Sean Connery as Indy’s dad.

Then… a 19 year wait until Crystal Skull. Ugh. In my opinion it’s worse of the bunch. Adding scifi to Indy’s resume was a big mistake. But did Lucas and Spielberg learn their lesson not to go back to the same well again? No.

With another 15 year wait, Dial Of Destiny arrived at theaters this week. What did these masters of cinema deliver? More of the same… lots more of the same. There are more Nazis, more long chase scenes; more Christ-related artifacts, and more science fiction! Did I mention more Nazis?

I’ve got to hand it to Harrison Ford. He gives it the old college try, huffing and puffing through each chase. At the age of 81, for his sake I hope a stunt double did most of the hard stuff. I imagine insuring Ford in case of accidental death took a chunk of the $295 million budget.

But it was nice seeing John Rhys-Davies in a couple of scenes. I probably shouldn’t say this but I was surprised he is still alive. But guess what? He is 2 years younger than Ford.

Co-Star Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the most unlikable character in the entire Indiana Jones pantheon. She is an annoying and untrustworthy - more so than the Nazis.

I need to mention Ethann Isidore, he plays a young teen who is this film’s Short-Round. I suspect Harrison Ford will forget all about him until Isidore wins an Oscar in 20 years.

Speaking of the Nazi villains, Mads Mikkelsen plays a Nazi scientist trying to get his hands on the McGuffin. Mikkelsen can play Nazi villains in his sleep but I thought the character was underwritten. No real motivation other than “I’m a power hungry Nazi.”

Boyd Holbrook and Thomas Kretschmann also play Nazis. I’d love to ask them “Don’t you ever get tired of playing Nazis?!?”

As I mentioned, there are several chased sequences - in streets and tunnels of NYC, in the crowded streets and alleys of Marrakech, and another that I’ve already forgotten entirely about. But here’s the thing about the chase scenes… it doesn’t matter how fast they go or the short cuts they take, the Villains always catch up to the heroes within a couple minutes - every single time.

And the most annoying thing of the entire plot… Mikkelsen and his Nazi thugs kill plenty of innocent people throughout the kill. But when Mikkelsen finally obtains the McGuffins he was searching for, does he kill Indy? No - like a Bond villain, he decides to Monologue is plans and bring Indy with him through the <redacted> to witness his triumph. Such Bullshit.

And the scifi element? I won’t describe it but it is full of plot holes and so far beyond anything featured in an Indiana Jones movie so far, it’s more laughable than the aliens in Crystal Skull.

I’m sure you’ve read that, like other movies starring old actors, Harrison Ford was “de-aged” for portions of the films. While it looks better than the first de-aging I saw in “X-Men Last Stand”. Young Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen looked like cabbage patch dolls!

The problem with the de-aging here it that the scenes go on way too long. And the longer you see it, the weirder it becomes. It’s especially noticible when his face is in shadows or in profile (his nose just looks weird). They should have just used it briefly, but the scenes go on about 15 minutes.

NOTE 1: There are NO scenes after the credits BUT the final scene of the movie may be its best.

NOTE 2: The film is rated PG13. It’s probably due to the extraordinary people shot and murdered throughout the movie - lots of Nazis and lots of civilians too.

Fascinating thing about the Loki Disney+ show is that it conceives a character with one of the most metal backstories ever, and the creatives are entirely uninterested in exploring it.

Like, this chaos god grew up in apocalypses, watching everyone she meets die within the space of a day. She's spent so long in this repetitive nightmare that she has barely any memory of her life before. In the midst of this, she is concocting a plan to destroy the fascistic time police, who are determined to kill her and everything else that diverts from their assigned roles. In order to accomplish this mission of restoring free will to the multiverse, she has to harness the power of possessing people.

Anyway her primary function in the second series is being a vessel for a brand deal.

Mac McDonald

Ok SO. First off, he’s said on at least one occasion that he considers Paddy’s Pub to be an Irish catholic bar (it is not). His religion plays a huge part in his character- it shapes a lot of his motivations and is the driving force behind a lot of his character arc. He spends a lot of time trying to reconcile his faith and his sexuality, and spends literally seasons (years in the show) doing that. In season 15, he literally almost became a priest. We see him go to confession and it’s canon that he goes regularly. In Mac day (a day where he got to choose what the gang did) he based the day around the Bible and lectured his friends.

OP note: Someone asked Mac to go up against firestar because he's not above animal abuse but i wanted to see puss vs firestar first so had firestar won, that match would have happened. to my surprise, puss won. anyways, that's why mac is up against two cats in a row

im not sure if you were asking for them separately or as a ship but uhhhh ill just cover all my bases ^_^

when nica was in college she was kind of a heart breaker. she hadn’t dated very much in highschool, probably just some boy for a few months, mainly out of a feeling of obligation, but she really hits her stride in college. it helps because shes finally on her own, she can spread her wings without the burden of feeling like the pitiful disabled girl with the mentally ill mother. in college she gets to be witty and charming and make friends who dont know her dreary backstory. also in college she realizes she is in fact a lesbian.. <3 (insert obligatory changing my major reference thank you kora)

nica’s kind of reveling in the discovery of women and kissing women and being with women and well she is all about that but i fear that she is a huge commitmentphobe is the problem. the list of messy exes and ghosted one night stands is something that honestly embarrasses nica but well you see they were too clingy ! (wanted to sleep over after having sex) they were too pushy and nosey! (asked about her childhood)

basically um. well imagine growing up and your mother drills it into you over and over again that the scariest most dangerous thing you can do is fall in love with someone. that no matter what nica does, dont love another person. dont open yourself up to the hurt, the pain, the loss. and nica rebuffs it because of course she does. she resents her mother for thinking nica cant handle herself, handle possible loss or pain, but she grew up on this, this fear and anguish seeped into her brain and now she herself is terrified of that possible loss. so she simply does not open herself up to that! which is actually what is so funny but also perfect about tiffanica to me. nica so resistent and fearful of commitment and mutual love that it takes another woman literally keeping her in their house like a wounded bird for her to get the kind of exposure therapy she needed to see that maybe being loved is not the terrible thing she grew up thinking it would be

oh also i really believe that sarah pierce has had a few suicide scares in the past, and that was particularly hard when barb was away from home (nica would be 12-18 all by herself with her mother). nica feels extremely responsible for her mothers mental health and keeping her safe. in fact i genuinely believe that the reason nica is at home in curse is not because of her own health reasons but because sarahs mental health took a pretty drastic drip and, of course barb refused to take care of her (she wanted to send her to a care home/or a ward), so nica swallowed her pride and gave up her independence to move back with her mother and keep an eye on her while she got better. i genuinely believe this is canon i wont lie, i feel like its very well supported in the text and implications of the movie.. but im just throwing it in here because i like spreading the good word

so for tiffany its pretty much canon that she meets chucky when shes uhhh 19 if we are being generous. shes very young. and hes in his late 20s </3. so well for tiffany i think she had a very messy time in her teenage years. a lot of intense relationships that were not good for her at all, she wanted to feel something, feel alive and in control but these men dont really wake that feeling up in her. she’s not careful with herself, i wouldnt call her suicidal but shes not very concerned with her life. visiting bars and hooking up with dangerous looking men for a thrill, shes kind of just waiting to get murdered about it the rate shes going. but when she meets chucky the pieces just fall into place. their relationship is so turbulent and exciting and dangerous and everything tiffany thought she wanted. but chucky is on a level above tiffany, hes colder, more calculating, more manipulative and dangerous, despite how badly tiffany wants to be just as despicable as him.

this isnt so much a headcanon but uhhhh. the fact that tiffany and chucky are together for 2 years before he dies. the fact that chucky kills her mother.. ^_^ um well i think that was probably just about the most fucked up thing. you have no one but me. she was holding you back. she wanted to stop you, but i want to set you free. etc etc etc… AGHH. when youre wrapped up so tightly in another person like that, in such a twisted and desperate and unhealthy way, it really does make sense that tiffany is obsessed with chucky ten years later. especially the fact that in that time she had idealized him so severely, i really believe that tiffany had completely twisted their relationship up in her head in the 10 years he was gone. she convinces herself that what they had was magical, that he was the one for her, that he was more loving than he actually was, that he held a certain amount of tenderness for her that shes emphasized in her mind. that she was the villain in their relationship, the desperate jealous bitch who hurt her loving boyfriend, without even giving him a chance. she gets the chucky heart tattoo when she finds out he dies, revels in the pain. she deserves to hurt after what she did. its less of a tattoo and more of a brand

hmmm kind of headcanon but also kind of implied canon due to jennifer and fiona’s machinations.. but i really like the concept of tiffany and nica having a very complicated and interesting dynamic post cult. the first time tiffany meets nica properly, is after chucky has hurt her. maybe he hit her or said something particularly hurtful, but she swings back and hits him across the face and well. out comes nica. this is how they meet the first few times. nica manages to wrangle her anxiety and panic under control, seeing the way that tiffany is so hysterically upset and anguished. and she comforts her. she doesnt know what else to do, she hates tiffany, cant look at her without hearing “she’s dead, miss pierce” ringing in her ears but the longer tiffany spends sobbing in nicas arms, she doesnt feel that burning hatred in the pit of her stomach. the fear kind of subsides a little too, not by much, but its not the overwhelming blind panic she felt the first time this happened. shes realizing that tiffany is not the cold calculating villain that she had believed her to be. that shes broken, hurting and scared, and desperately in love with chucky, someone who cant love her back the way she wants, the way she needs.. nica pities her

also the rest of my tiffanica thoughts lie squarely in the alternate but better reality where nica never gets dismembered and tiffany exorcises chucky from her body, so them living in tiffanys house together is a lot more like. focused on their dynamic and how they learn to care for each other in a way that makes sense to both of them. its kind of everything to me.. ^_^

OH one additional silly headcanon i have is that barb owned a copy of bound, but she left it at home after leaving to college, and a young nica ends up stumbling upon it and well um. it in fact does affect her in ways.

The Gang Gets Put into a Saw Trap

Okay this idea has been plaguing me so here are my speculations about if members of the gang ended up in saw traps (what they would be and why they would/wouldn't survive)

If he doesn't get put in a trap for stalking then John definitely gets him for his drug use. Based on Charlie's Home Alone and the ending of Chardee Macdennis 2: Electric Boogaloo Charlie actually has a chance. He's willing to put himself into great physical pain to achieve a goal, but in Charlie's Home Alone he also proves how little foresight he puts into most things. Any level of complexity and Charlie is dead. If he listens to the instructions he has a chance, but will he ? As for the trap...the classic bathroom trap. I could go reverse bear trap because of the substance abuse, but Charlie's history as a voyeur lines up with Adam's quite well. Low chance of survival just based on the need to collaborate with another person and not let them kill him. (Rather than a poisoned cigarette it would be poisoned alcohol, which he would take without convincing.)

Next up is Dee

Dee would likely end up in a trap for her consistent history of putting her own comfort and convenience over other's wellbeing. We see this when she leaves the Waitress in a bog in Dee Sinks in a Bog, getting Cricket to leave the priesthood in The Gang Exploits a Miracle, and leaving him and others to burn alive in Mac and Dennis's apartment in The Gang Squashes their Beefs. Dee ends up at the helm of the shotgun carousel and I see her saving no lives and failing jigsaw's test. Next is Dennis

We all know Dennis's sin is lust, and of course it is his sexual impropriety that lands him in a trap. In both parts of The Gang Goes to Hell he practically hunts a barely of age girl, and in The Gang Buys a Boat he makes it just clear enough what the implication of being on a boat is that it's worrying even to Mac. All of this lands Dennis in the Bedroom trap. Dennis shows a high pain tolerance in Chardee Macdennis, even managing to avoid reacting to having his hand pierced with a dart. However, I'm not sure vanity would allow him to gouge his eyes out like he would need to for this trap. He might be able to, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Next Frank

Frank's history of running sweatshops is not exactly a secret. Frank admits to deaths in his sweatshops in Charlie Goes America All over Everybody's Ass, and it's not that surprising after seeing how he tells Mac to run his own sweatshop in The Aluminum Monster vs Fatty Magoo. We learn more of the gruesome details of this in Making Dennis Reynolds a Murderer when he continues the tradition of forgetting he's hot, just like in Frank's Little Beauties. All of this lands Frank in the Acid room trap and needless to day, if any of his victim's family members had the chance, Frank wouldn't make it out of that room. Frank dies. Finally, Mac.

Mac or Ronnie the Rat has a long history of snitching. In The High School Reunion he rats on Adriano for having fake drink tickets, but that's a fairly small crime compared to his snitching nearly costing his father his life in Mac Kills his Dad. This lands Mac in the Venus Flytrap trap. Unfortunately for Mac based on his performance in Mac Day and his admission to Charlie that his new sunglasses in Pop-Pop: the Final Solution are to hide how scared he is, he isn't the badass he thinks he is. He's not digging a key out of his eye anytime soon. Mac fails the test.

Bonus !

The gang as a whole likely would end up in the featured trials of Saw V, and in most cases, would not survive. HOWEVER--the gang of Season 2 with Franks guidance may have a chance to make it out alive. As Dennis explains in Chardee Macdennis, his mind is strong but his body is weak.

every time i see that ‘trans girls who eat at subway’ blog i think about the time the subway my bf used to work at found bugs in their spinach because it was unwashed due to a manufacturing error, and kept serving it to customers, fully aware that there were bugs in it.

and like that was just one incident at one subway but the thing is they’re a giant corporation, they have the most locations of any fast food chain in america, why the fuck are you giving them free advertising. they’re just another terrible fast food chain that heavily mistreats and underpays their workers

and more importantly why are so many people just falling for it. being like “this blog made me get subway” just because it’s a trans girl? you are extremely susceptible to propaganda and i am worried for you holy shit.
