i have suddenly become obsessed with a theme that HoO established but never proceeded to extrapolate on, which is:
You are Percy Jackson, and you have been swapped with a boy who was allegedly everyone's favorite person, but they have decided to replace him with you. They just met you. You stand next to his best friend and the people he's known his entire life. In his home. In his cloak. In his place. They stopped looking for him.
You are Jason Grace, and you have just found out you have a long lost sister who completely replaced you in her life with this girl you just met. Your lives and personalities are mirrors. She is you, living the life you were robbed of.
You are Annabeth Chase, and you have just become starkly aware that you have been inhabiting the void left behind by your best friend's long lost brother. You and Luke were just replacements for him. Now you have to look him in the eyes when he has nothing and know you took that life from him.
You are Piper McLean, and you have just found out your relationship is fake and built entirely on the memories of Annabeth Chase. You have been given a boyfriend when hers has been taken away. You have no idea how much of it is real or not but regardless you feel like if your relationship isn't exactly in their image that you have failed.
You are Leo Valdez, and you have just learned that you are the echo of your great-grandfather. You are not your own person. You just exist to be a mirror of him. A doppelganger. An actor and stunt double facing all the danger he never had to but wearing his face. To be there for his best friend decades later simply because he couldn't. You are playing a role. A seventh wheel and a pawn for a goddess who carefully sculpted your entire life for her own purposes.
You are Hazel Levesque, and the only reason you are alive is because your brother couldn't save your his sister. You are a consolation prize. An apology. Your existence here is misplaced in every way but you inhabit it anyways.
You are Frank Zhang, and you are a shapeshifter. Inhabiting your own body feels strange and clumsy when you could be literally anything at any time. You are anything and everything and live your life with the simple certainty of knowing exactly how you will die.
#pjo#hoo#heroes of olympus#percy jackson#riordanverse#jason grace#annabeth chase#piper mclean#leo valdez#hazel levesque#frank zhang#meta#analysis#me shaking hoo: what if we actually address the interpersonal dynamics of the characters. please. please. please. please.#frank is the only person on the boat not having an identity crisis tied to another member of the crew somehow and that is FASCINATING#but also WHERE is all the interpersonal literally anything. hello. please. making grabby hands. everybody identity crisis go.#i wanna see the entire argo ii crew stumbling through trying to figure out their places and senses of self!!!!!#particularly in relation to each other!!!!! we get snippets but we rarely ever get the full thing or a resolution!!!#like. HELLO??? Piper acknowledging that her relationship with Jason is artificially sculpted in the image of Annabeth and Percy???#and that her ideals of what Jason and her can be are just that she feels like they need to be like what Percy and Annabeth have????#and thats just DROPPED COMPLETELY????#poor Jason is getting replaced twice. Leo is not his own person.#Hazel at least gets the resolution that Nico does not truly see her as a consolation prize#but Annabeth gets to be hit with the like EIGHT YEAR DELAY of learning the place she inhabits in Thalia's life is the echo of someone else#cause like. yeah she knew Thalia had lost her brother but i dont think it clicked for her until she met Jason that oh. she *replaced* him#Frank at least has some certainty about his identity in one aspect (his curse). everybody else is floundering a bit#except for maybe Percy but its kind of the camps of ''i replaced this person and it weighs on me'' versus ''i have been replaced''

I think about Harrow and Crux a lot actually and I need to talk about it a little bit or I might scream. because like- Crux sucks right?? we all agree on this, he is an awful, wretched old man who was abjectly abusive to one of two little girls left in his care after the deaths of their primary care takers.
but then his relationship with Harrow in specific makes me insane bc he loved that girl SO MUCH. that was his daughter!!!! maybe even more so than she was Priamhark and Pelleamena’s she was his!!!
and HE KNEW just like they did exactly what had to be done to create her, he watched her grow up reviled by her parents and he looked at that little girl and just… loved her? no questions asked, no morality hang ups, she was worth every sin committed to get her.
because that’s the thing about Crux i think for me, the moment he conceived of Harrow’s existence she was what he was loyal to, not the ninth or the reverend parents or even god just his kid; the rest of the ninth loved Harrow because she was The Reverend Daughter, Crux loved Harrow because she was Harrow. and because she was Harrow she was literally more important than anyone else.
and what does that do to a person? because I can guarantee right now that it was not good for either of them, like at all. Harrow was traumatised, fundamentally hubristic and a literal actual child, with a very confused moral compass, who by age ten had become fully complicit in the abuse of the only other child she had ever met!!! she did not need yet another grown adult enabling her to become worse!!
not to mention that he did abuse his position as the final arbiter of her reality to lie to her on more than one occasion, including but not limited to that one time he deadass killed two whole people for going even slightly against his special little lady (not to mention the several times he seemingly tried to kill Gideon without Harrow noticing)
an idea I see thrown around a lot when discussing the potential kiriona-John dynamic that I think works really well and is also interesting when applied to Harrow and Crux, albeit in a slightly different way is : what if your dad was the worst man in the universe and also literally the only person who really wanted you? how do you contend with that?
ALSO the fact that in Nona we find out that half his grudge with Gideon is that she didn’t die for Harrow!! her parents fear it but Crux is BITTER about it!! he’s so angry that she, in his eyes, has been failing to do right by Harrow her entire life because she could never die right!!
anyway, all this to say I can’t wait to see Harrow try to navigate her grief over Crux’s death in AtN while contending with the fact that he was fundamentally complicit in her continued abuse of Gideon for years and years, which ultimately led to gideons degradation of self and set the groundwork for her sacrificial suicide.
not to mention yet another person she desperately loved dying in a way that is unquestionably in service of her continued existence, unasked for and without giving her a snowflakes chance in hell of saying goodbye. again.

inspired by my friends and their gacha adventures
bonus end, because the road of gacha gaming is riddled with the salt:
Tumblr media
some process sketches and lines under the cut if anyone's interested
the first little doodle that started everything:
Tumblr media
i was originally just going to make this one drawing, with a short little dialogue thing, but i decided to draw it all out into a little comic:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
fun fact: you can tell how anxious i am about drawing something traditionally by how many process photos i take. cuz if the worse comes to worst, i can always finish or fix it digitally IF my motivation battery hasn't completely drained, which... it usually is 😅
but i'm very happy with how this turned out! need to draw more silly ideas

there is something unique and deeply special about monkey d luffy as a protagonist. he’s overwhelmingly ADORED by the fandom. he’s consistently the most or at least top 3 most popular characters in the whole series. peoples takes about him are gushingly positive. and that’s… really uncommon.
a LOT of fandoms i’ve witnessed or been in have a tendency to favor characters other than the main character. especially in anime. the main characters are often written as a blank slate for readers/watchers to project onto, but that makes them not as interesting and so they don’t get the fan attention.
but luffy is so far from that. and he’s ALWAYS been this way. we love him so much. he’s the heart of the story and the heart of the fandom in every single way. and i think that speaks to how well-written he is as a character. he’s fun and charming and complex and interesting and he makes us laugh and cry and cheer and hope and love. he’s able to inspire so much joy in people, both in his world but also in this one. and i think that’s really special. i feel so grateful to have found this story that means so much to me, and i’m so grateful that luffy exists.

Anyone else think a lot about how at the end of canon, Lan Wangji has had time to mature for 10+ years into a guy in his mid-30s, but Wei Wuxian still has the life experience and general maturity of a war-traumatized early 20-something?
Because like. Wei Wuxian died young and he died tragically, and everyone who was around him then that's still there after he's resurrected has gotten to live their lives. They got to mature. They've had 13/16 years to heal (or not heal -_-) and learn who they are. To become fully realized adults outside of the pressures of war. And Wei Wuxian hasn't had that. If you believe MXTX's interview that circulates on this site sometimes, he spent those 16 years in a suspended state of agony. And even if you don't believe that, he was still dead. Non-existant.
For Wei Wuxian, the war is fresh. The pain is fresh. He has no idea what's doing because he's barely an adult, if admittedly a highly skilled one for his age. The world has moved on around him and he has stayed in place. What does he do with that?
Wei Wuxian had no choice but to pretend that he's moved on, too, because that war that took so much from him was almost two decades ago, now. The Wen Remnants have been dead for over 10 years. What use is it to dig up old hurts? Except, those hurts are still hurting him.
When he died, Wei Wuxian was helping care for Lan Sizhui. Wen Yuan. When he died, Lan Wangji raised A-Yuan with the Lan. If Wei Wuxian was dead for 13/16 years and A-Yuan was 3/4 when he died, then Lan Sizhui is about his age, or very close to it.
This is the child he was raising. This child is now his peer.
Wei Wuxian has memories of war and tragedy, but no one to talk to. The juniors, who are closest to him in relative age, haven't known war, and everyone who has known it has moved on. He's trapped between generations, and that has to be so incredibly isolating.
Jiang Yanli, the Wen Remnants, Wen Qing of particular note, all of them died shortly before he did. Did he ever really get to grieve them? Will he be allowed to now? Especially with his reputation. Especially with the number of people who would really prefer him to simply leave the past in the past. Especially with all the people who think he is the cause of the deaths he wishes to grieve.
Will he be allowed to mourn, if the cultivation world thinks these deaths are his fault? Or that these people don't deserve to be grieved?
Wei Wuxian has the misfortune of being a man who is a decade out of time, and he will have to learn to cope with that, but how does he account for the missing years? When the pain is still fresh for him, how does he find a place in a society that has long since moved on?

This season has been absolutely full of rabbits. Akilah cradling rabbits; rabbits surrounding a doomed Ben; rabbits slaughtered repeatedly onscreen. We know there’s a strong symbolic link between Jackie and rabbits in Yellowjackets, but an important distinction is that they don’t represent Jackie as a person (she didn’t even like rabbits!) so much as the idea of Jackie, something ascribed to her against her will: a warped, disingenuous version of her.
It also doesn’t escape my notice that in the very same episode that Kodiak shoots a rabbit through the heart with his crossbow he also shoots Melissa in the chest. Melissa, who Shauna uses to fill a Jackie-shaped hole inside her. Who is pinned down with a knife, hyperventilating like a cornered prey animal when she first gets with Shauna. Who approaches Shauna tentatively, timidly. Who lays flowers on Shauna’s son’s grave and gifts her a handmade sheath wrapped in bark and berries. Who is fearful yet exhilarated when encouraged to embrace her own darkness.
There’s a strange innocence to her interactions with Shauna, but it’s also the death of innocence; the relinquishment of innocence; innocence taken advantage of. When she’s struck with the arrow she cries out to Shauna, but Shauna is like a wolf hot on the hunt, and she can’t offer Melissa the unconditional love she craves and gives freely.
All of which makes me wonder: who is the rabbit?

the most important distinction between boba fett and jango fett is that jango fett grew up on a farm and then in a traveling mandalorian merc clan and boba fett grew up in a city sized lab and then juvie and then every gutter in the galaxy from here to nar shaddaa
#and both of them have seen way too much shit they can't unsee#jango fett#boba fett#txt#I feel like people gloss over boba's coming of age era cause it's a content void but I do think it's important to his character#gestures vaguely Something(s) happened there#teenage to early 20s boba is very fun to think about cause he's like the exoskeleton of the adult boba we see#by which I mean he's very troubled kid archetype very antagonistic hasnt really nailed down much about who he is besides the main stuff he's#already known forever#so he's basically being dragged through the alleys of the galaxy learning all these very hard lessons#and at the same time developing all these ideas about what he can be what he's going to be what he wants#there's a lot of kids floating through the gutters and a lot of them dont make it out#and boba has a lot of big advantages but there's also an explosiveness to him that is necessary to power him through all the#Trials and Tribulations and Associated Bullshit to the position that he holds comfortably later#22 year old fuck it we ball ruthless boba is the reason 37 year old still ruthless boba gets to say he's just a simple man making his way#through the galaxy#and likewise while I think most of his idealism burns off early#I think there's a lot more social self-positioning inner turmoil that burns off like a comet tail over the years#my beautiful meta characterization using like 30% of total boba fett media#I need to become a true scholar of boba fett#etc etc

I actually like the idea that maglor was very much against all the kinslayings before they happened, each time fighting against it as hard as he could before capitulating in the face of his brothers' determination. I think his tendency towards despair and his avoidance of death actually helped him out at that point, the oath couldn't pull at him as hard because he was fully convinced there was no chance anyways and he didn't want to die.
I like to think each of the brothers had their own reasons driving them forward actually (yknow beyond the soul binding oath and the looming threat of the super-void and all). Maedhros did it because he couldn't see any other way out after fingon. He had played every card in his deck and it all turned to dust, now he was simply in too deep. The sunk ship fallacy at its finest. Celegorm was the most genuinely consumed by the oath towards the end, giving himself over to it entirely like an animal becomes consumed when rabid. Curufin wanted to save their father and the more the others started resenting feanor, the more he felt it was up to him to stay loyal and true. Caranthir was the most like maglor, but also had a closer connection to life and feared what would come if they didn't succeed. Ambarussa wanted to protect each other—the others too ofc but each other most of all.
And maglor? A lifetime of being someone else's second, of playing the caretaker, of repeated attempts of leadership that were ultimately miserable experiences—he gave himself over. Not willing to lose more, he clung onto what he had left no matter what. I think maglor represents how sometimes compliance and loyalty are violent—that standing aside and letting others dictate your life is ultimately also a choice you make with consequences attached.
I also don't think this side of him softens his character at all. Because the crux of the matter is, he still did them. Yes, the first one was out of confusion and loyalty towards his father. Yes, the others were commited only for the sake of his brothers. Yes, it was all because he refused to betray his family. But do any of his victims know that? Do they care? Did he kill any less because of it? Or did loyalty drive him to fight even harder? The act of it remains, even if his reasons were different and even if he was reluctant. And no matter what their reasons were, senseless slaughter is the act all the sons of feanor commited. I think giving them individualized reasons just sweetens the pot and brings more color to his later actions

Thinking about Cassian in the hangar, deferential and respectful, standing a solid 2-3 metres away from Jyn who was just belittled and dismissed and is expecting him to heap on. And saying, fuck what my bosses all agreed on. "I believe you." And how much weight that has, because he was a good soldier who followed orders even when they meant getting innocent blood on his own hands. And yet faced with this choice that seems comparatively reasonable, that seems like an order that would be a relief compared to most of his previous ones - an order that is protecting the existing rebels, that was presented as preventing needless bloodshed, all at the small cost of telling one young woman who isn't even part of their group "sorry, you clearly believe this very strongly and it clearly took you a lot to bring this to us, but we are choosing not to believe you" - he says, no. He decides that believing this one woman is worth going rogue for just as much as every justified, terrible act before that would have been worth going rogue to prevent.
Thinking about how much that meant to me when I saw it at age 20, in ways I couldn't even explain until a few months later, when for the first time in my lifetime, believing women became a thing people talked about.
Thinking about a man getting the job to make a prequel for this movie years down the line, and setting out to make the show progressive and political. Thinking about that man not seeing a problem in taking Cassian's deliberately, desperately blind following of rules until this woman away from the story. Thinking about how this likely wasn't a malicious choice. How, to the male show writers, this scene was just a bunch of people talking in a hangar, this was just the lead-up to a cooler more interesting action sequence. Thinking about how clearly, something about the way Cassian was so deferential for most of the movie, deferential in the same way towards his powerful male commanding officer and towards this woman he didn't know but chose to believe and follow into hell, rankled with these writers. Not enough so they'd criticise it outright, maybe not even enough that they noticed it bothered them. But enough to change it.
Thinking about that.

May I just say... Colin Morgan's background stage business is impeccable. There are so many actors who just stand there watching or aimlessly shuffle around, but I've noticed that when Colin Morgan is in-character, he is in-character.
I haven't watched him in anything other than Merlin, but when he's not the focus of the camera, he's still doing things just as Merlin does. Like, trying not to laugh during the feast when Elena was visiting and displaying poor table manners, actually looking deep in-thought and mouthing the name 'Alice' when Gaius was talking to him about her, glaring at Gwen from the bedpost when she was enchanted and was monologuing about who could have possibly poisoned Arthur, polishing or doing a chore or keeping his head down when Uther's talking to Arthur but still watching them with a keen eye-
and so many more instances! His background stage business is just amazing.

hi guys on today's episode of "vi can't be normal about one piece" we are talking about the insane parallels between zeff and sanji and luffy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
guys. guys this is happening exactly as both zeff and (adult) sanji give up on their dream. zeff is at this point all but given up on the all blue and sanji now has resigned himself to the fact that he has to die to save the crew.
enter: the ones that fight for their dreams kicking screaming. stubborn and relentless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
look at this scene. this fucking scene. the blood in sanji's face and how stubborn he is about not giving up on his dream. he will not let it end here. he will weave the strings of fate himself if he has to. he will drag himself through hell. he will not give up. it doesn't end here.
Tumblr media
this is so fucked up. luffy is fighting for his dream when he has given up on it. he is thinking "sanji can't be strong for himself now, so i will be strong for him. i will save him. from everyone waiting to harm him and from himself." sanji has buried the kid in him that longs to find the all blue and here we see luffy dig the ground the child lies in with bare hands. he will not let it end. not here. not now.
Tumblr media
this is what kept him alive. zeff's sacrifice. zeff's gamble and belief that this kid that he doesn't even know will find the all blue. that he will do what he couldn't. now what makes this scene so important is the two ways this can be seen. in zeff's eyes, it's his choice. he chose to save sanji with no prior knowledge about anything about him because whatever he saw in sanji at that moment in the ship, he wanted to keep alive. it is an ultimately selfish motive. is it kind? yes, definitely. but it's not selfless. the other way you can see this through sanji's eyes. sanji, who has been told all he is is a burden and that his life is worthless is now being kept alive by a man who he doesn't even know. he has thrown his life away for sanji. sanji looks at it like this: "zeff is a kind man. he helped me because he couldn't let a child starve. what he did for me is an obligation where he was forced into a corner." sanji interprets this as an altruistic action and that he is now indebted to him forever.
Tumblr media
luffy didn't sacrifice a leg for sanji, but he was ready to die. he KNEW he wouldn't, though. because he knows sanji and his bleeding heart and his love. once again, sanji and his dream is saved by another person starving for him. the main thing that distinguishes this scene from the zeff one is that this was a choice, without doubt. luffy KNOWS sanji. he has seen the ugliest parts of sanji and he still loves him. he is ready to give up his life for sanji with no ulterior motive. he doesn't want sanji to carry on his dream or do anything for him. he knows what sanji wants, but after this scene, he still asks. "what does sanji want?" he pulls the truth out of the hollows of his chest. he doesn't flinch at what he sees there. he sees sanji's hunger, want and kindness so vast that it can even be considered naive. he doesn't flinch. he simply smiles.

Actually, I wouldn’t call them a found family. And considering 3/7 are literal family too, but I think in the very traditional sense they sort of are but the word’s been used so much it’s lost in meaning.
The perfect term is used by Ponyboy himself in the very first chapter, they’re a gang. Not a traditional one, even by Tulsa standards, it’s always been a group of good buddies more than anything organized. They’re a tight knit friend group that grew up together and depends on each other and I don’t think we should take away from that or try to re-name it.
Tumblr media
I think the coining of ‘found family’ has inadvertently taken away from the power of friendship— it sounds cheesy but there are deep, lifelong bonds from simply a childhood friend/friend group. Added to the fact that ‘found family’ is so often misused and misinterpreted to add actual family dynamics or anti dating sentiment when that is not what it is about.
Besides being a gang another way Pony expresses the gang is ‘like brothers’. This is a term to refer to male friendships that are incredibly close and typically life long, the kind of relationship that can weather and fare far more than a typical friendship. (Like how siblings ‘have’ to forgive or work things out). Like found family people have been misinterpreting this to be much more literal and again weirdly anti dating— instead of its actual use to express closeness.
The thing about the gang is how close they are, how they aren’t even the primary people they’ll hang out with. The boys have lives of their own and more friends and family beyond each other but are always there and pick up where they left off. It’s not spoken but understood, you stick together… not to mention the views of loyalty half the gang hold. Ough

Post scientific minds what to know - which one of the current body swap boys can wield mir galaxia? Is it the one that has dmk's mind? or his body? or is it taking this rare opportunity to shock Both of them should they try to pick it up?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
well well well, due to the specific ties of Mir Galaxia's enchanting, it can only be safely held by Dark's body! As for souls? Well, it didn't exactly choose DMK's, and it doesn't seem very forgiving about that fact.
