People really liking my speculative animal wishlists and seem to enjoy that I keep doing vampire versions of non-vampire animals, which is of course because vampire bats are adorable and wonderful. They are adorable and wonderful BECAUSE they are vampires. They are technically completely harmless but there's still a chance they will drink your blood while you're asleep and we as a species hate that SO much it inspires horror and superstition of all sorts. So I think there should be more like that but I already have some that are fish and some that are bugs, so here's just my Top Ten Land Vertebrates That Should Have Vampire Versions:
Tarsier. How great would it be if that thing was also a creeping ghoul. Vampire version would be goth colors. I guess it'd be aesthetically like between a tarsier and an aye-aye actually.
Gecko. I don't know how it would obtain the blood, maybe its tongue would have evolved to have a super sharp tip? Maybe the tip of its little gecko nose would be like a sharp hook?
Tree frog. Same issue as the gecko. I'm gonna say the gecko has a sharp tongue and the frog has a sharp nose. A frog with a beak. Let's also make it see through like a glass frog. Just a ghostly little frog that will cut you.
Kiwi bird, using a needly-fine beak tip and excellent climbing skills, much tinier than the New Zealand one and found on every continent. Then the New Zealand kiwi can still be special. Nature specials can be ike "did you know!? The New Zealand Giant Kiwi is the only kiwi that isn't a sick freak"
Pangolin and this one unlike the rest of these would maybe actually be dangerous, like still pretty large for a blood feeder, if you fall asleep unprotected in vampangolin territory you aren't gonna wake up. I just think pangolins deserve to take a little something back, you know. I guess it might be hard for them to sustain themselves on just blood but maybe these would live where there's a whole lot of big juicy animals for them, like they follow herds of buffalo around.
Flying squirrel and I would put this in my own state of Oregon so like a real Fearsome Critter.
Turtle, because to successfully live like a vampire bat you need to be able to detect a blood source, get to it quickly, drink your fill and get out of there just as quickly, so we'd be talking the fastest and lightest little turtle in the world, a long legged scurrying beetle of a turtle, really long neck with a nasty ass beak. Shell could also be covered in wicked as hell thorns for when a rude host wakes up and tries to be mean to it.
Snake and I would also make it the shortest fattest snake so I guess I'm saying a leech tsuchinoko. Like the vampire bat its fangs would have evolved into two short but sharp little vampire buckteeth. It would be too chubby to coil up the way regular snakes do so instead it would have to roll up the way a pillbug or an armadillo does, into a ball.
Pachyderm with a sharp spur on its trunk. Maybe around pug size, a wrinkly hairy wretched looking micro elephant that would probably live off the blood of things like giraffes and zebras and regular elephants while they sleep. Actually like the pangolin this could probably kill you. Every now and then we could hear about how a big game hunter left his tent open and got completely exsanguinated by an adorable hideous vamphant.

The House Between Worlds
There’s still so much work left before my little Victorian cottage villa, stitched from stardust and stubborn earthly bones, becomes what it was always meant to be.
The upper floors, those clawing at the veil, remain unreachable by ordinary means. I need new stairs. Real ones. Ones that won’t send someone slipping out the window if they misstep on creaking wood. As it stands, the uppermost rooms are only accessible in spirit form, and while that suits most of my guests just fine, I long to bring more of it here, into touch, into breath.
W.-J. says the instability is “charming,” which means he doesn’t plan on helping unless it collapses beneath someone important. J. offered to anchor the structure with a charm, but only if I promise to sleep more than two hours a night. G. just smirked, mumbled something about “controlled danger,” and warned R. not to bring his art supplies upstairs. R., of course, is already planning a mural across the ceiling that no one can reach yet.
We’re building big now. The mass of spirits has grown beyond what can be politely hidden. I’ve stopped trying. If curious eyes peer in, spectral or mundane, I no longer mind. Let those who resonate with this place feel it in their bones. Let them knock and be seen, otherwise may the battle begin.
One thing I can always manage, no matter how loud the worlds get, is decoration. Handmade, of course. It's better when it bleeds with effort. And with spirits multiplying like ivy in a storm, a register is overdue: names, portraits, sigils. I've started painting them, with help from a colleague. My head's been humming for weeks. My body aches, reshaped by transformation. I sometimes wonder what of me will be left when this version is complete.
But truly? Anything is better than being dulled by ordinary senses.
Maybe it’s writing that keeps me here. This act of whispering into the world, offering pieces of myself in ink and thought. That, and the quiet need to make my human life beautiful, even if common goals no longer hold meaning.
Even my perfect grades, those long nights of sleepless study, once meant everything to me. Now, they feel like polished stones at the bottom of a deep well. I don’t regret them. What I learned sharpens my craft daily. But when time folds, when past and future selves blur like breath on a mirror, what was I doing all that time? I could’ve learned just as much as a spirit, without the weight of survival.
Back to the grimoire project. Every spirit who stays here deserves a portrait and an entry in the House Ledger. Locating them all is the first step. My demoness has started a list, spirit signatures, ready to be traced, but now I must find a way to drag it fully into this world.
I’m thinking about how to do it efficiently. I am, after all, the devil of bureaucracy. I catalog everything. Creatures, insects, stray pulses of magic, the purring velvet curve of my cat’s tail.
The only real question is: where do I find a tome large enough to hold all of us?
Right now, I’m writing from the cat bench. It’s draped in thick, cozy blankets, white fur on one end, zebra-stripe on the other, the one H. brought with her from her old home. She’s snoozing by the window. Miss L. is curled in the middle, and little L., my marble micro guardian, is a soft weight on my lap. My coffee waits on the cupboard. The room breathes.
For a moment, the worlds fold gently into each other.
And I write.
- D.

Does anyone know shit about dreams and what they mean because...I am so confused. Here is a summary of the dream I had last night to the best of my memory.
I was trying to adopt more Thai micro crabs, but there was so many different colors! (like neon pink and zebra stripes) Some where actually gigantic, and the sales person talked about them needing to eat pokemon cards or something. In the dream I had to pee so bad and I kept needing to go so I kept going to the bathroom in my dream, and then boyfriend was at my house sleeping and I accidently activated like a Halloween decoration and I was trying to get it to shut up but couldn't?? I then wet myself like 5 times??
I woke up terrified that I wet the bed ( I didn't which was good). After I got up to use the bathroom for real, I realized I did get up to pee irl. Everytime I got to pee in the dream I actually got out of bed and used the bathroom (sleep walking me forgot to ya know...) and I was just standing there for a min wondering if a home intruder broke in, pissed in my bathroom and left. Weird morning.
Any dream interpreters got any commentary on this? These kinds of dreams have been recurring for like a week now.
Is it stress? Drinking to much water before bed? A side effect of a medication? God playing a cruel joke? Help.

NATURE & SHIPWRECKS (unit #5 - freestyle)
Hello friends,
We are back again this week with the most exciting prompt yet: no prompt! I am taking this opportunity to talk about my biggest childhood interest… SHIPWRECKS!
You might be wondering how this relates to nature at all but deep-sea shipwrecks are biodiversity hubs. I have always been interested in shipwrecks because I am both terrified and in awe of them. My main fascination is with how such an inorganic and visually man-made object is completely emersed by aquatic life and fits so well in an ecosystem it was never intended to be in.
STOCKTREK IMAGES. (n.d.). A sunken ship lays on its side near Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas. How do we find shipwrecks—and who owns them? National Geographic. Retrieved from https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/how-do-we-find-shipwrecks-and-who-owns-them.
Shipwrecks are considered “islands of biodiversity” because they offer a structure for an incredibly wide variety of species to inhabit, which creates pockets of very high biodiversity, acting as artificial reefs (Hamdan et al., 2021). Imagine a sandy sea floor with not much going on besides some small rocks and vegetation, now put a huge stationary shipwreck there, and eventually, many species will call this new isolated habitat their new home. Many shipwrecks are dripping with so many species that you cannot even see bare metal anymore.
It is clear from photos that there are lots of different fish, vegetation, and corals that inhabit old shipwrecks, but we are missing a very important aspect of shipwreck ecosystems: the micro-organism colonies! In our defense, we can't see them but they make up a huge portion of biodiversity. Microorganisms establish and preserve shipwrecks as artificial reefs, allowing other species to thrive in/on shipwrecks. It is amazing how much power the tiny species hold and how influential they are to full ecosystems. (Hamdan et al., 2021)
Murat. (n.d.). Bream Fish around the shipwreck. How do we find shipwrecks—and who owns them? Adobe Stock Images. Retrieved from https://www.bristolaquarium.co.uk/animal-stories/animals-that-find-a-home-in-sunken-ships/
I have never had the opportunity to visit a shipwreck other than kayaking over top of a boiler. I love watching videos of people diving to explore shipwrecks, although I can't imagine ever doing it myself. I am incredibly curious to hear if anyone has done this? I would absolutely love to hear your experiences! We (Ontario locals) live in the perfect place to go shipwreck diving because the Great Lakes have cold water and low salinity which are fanatics conditions for the preservation of shipwrecks. The Great Lakes are regarded as one of the best shipwreck diving spots in the world. (Harrington, 2019)
I have always found shipwrecks interesting because of the duality that the vessel wasn't strong enough to complete its voyage but it is strong enough to be preserved underwater for (possibly) hundreds of years, sometimes in near-perfect condition. However, the shipwrecks of the Great Lakes are in trouble!! Invasive species of the Great Lakes like zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) and quagga mussels (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) are threatening our beautifully preserved nuggets of history. These filter feeders can cause damage through heavy weight and even corrosion of some metals, if enough pile up. Additionally, they release carbon dioxide which can severely alter water quality and the conditions that help preserve shipwrecks. It is insane that these huge structures that can last up to thousands of years can be threatened by something as small and seemingly passive as mussels. (Harrington, 2019)
Thanks for reading, hopefully you see shipwrecks from a slightly different perspective! Who knew shipwrecks were so intertwined with nature (I did because I am a nerd who loves shipwrecks)!

Blogpost #15
In this blogpost I would like to discuss an issue I have faced with my ‘unraveled’ animatic. The second scene that introduces the conflict between the young orange and its parents would be quite visually boring to watch since it would just be the oranges shouting at each other with not much happening on the screen. The storytelling in this scene is done through both audio and the expressions of the characters. However, it also becomes a bit stale after the characters are established.
To combat this issue, I have decided to include a small cut in the scene where the camera cuts to a small creature or insect on the ground. The camera will focus on the small creature while showing the vastness of the tree. To continue the narrative, the audio of oranges would continue to play in the background and eventually go back to the final dialogue of the small orange right before it leaves for its adventure.
This juxtaposition of the macro and the micro shot should would help in creating some contrast from the high energy argument of the oranges while also establishing the world around it. It would also help solidify the beliefs of the young orange thinking about the world being a very peaceful place. These kind of shots can be found in movies like ‘My Neighbour Tottoro’ a Studio Ghibli film. One such shot can be found here where the frog draws away attention for a little bit and enforces the environment.
youtube
Another such example is this scene at 0:20 where the bird flies across the river (primary action) while the protagonist is crossing it (secondary action). The bird here remains the main focus while establishing the protagonists vast and beautiful surroundings.
youtube
Another example of this can be seen in the opening sequence in Disney’s Lion King when the flock of birds fly over the massive waterfall. There are also multiple instances of primary and secondary actions in the sequence (the ants and the zebras) that help establish the surroundings and add to the worldbuilding.
