[npd-advice]

a while ago i got a new therapist and she learned that i very heavily suspect i have npd (i did not tell her. that was my mother. without my consent! yay!! /s) and, a few sessions in, we were talking about my grandiosity and lack of empathy. to keep it simple, she told me it was a result of my childhood and my trauma, and she does not think i have npd. she didn’t outright say it, but she thinks that because my symptoms are trauma responses, i do not have npd. which is literally not how that works, npd is caused by trauma, we all know that. in the moment i accepted what she said to preserve image, and said that i wasn’t more than 40% sure. even though i’m more like 98% sure. and that was that.

i really would like to bring it back up with her, because i would like the possibility of me having npd to be properly explored, and also - for my own pride - i would like her to acknowledge that npd is, in fact, caused by trauma. and my experience is consistent with that. i would like advice on how i should bring it up, without looking insane.

Ooh another case of therapists not listening to their clients... it seems to be pretty common with cluster b, I've seen.

Yeah no your therapist is wrong, NPD quite literally is caused by trauma most of the time. Even a quick Google search can prove that (not the AI response, because nobody should trust AI.) I'd probably ask her why exactly she thinks it isn't NPD despite you displaying key symptoms, and also why she thinks NPD isn't a disorder typically rooted in trauma.

Any input from the notes would be greatly appreciated.

1: First starter was either Cyndaquil or Totodile, I can’t quite remember. I played both my HeartGold and SoulSilver games at the same time as a kid, so I’m not sure which one I went with first, but I’m pretty sure it was Totodile on my SoulSilver copy.

Random anecdote, but speaking of Johto starters, I’ve never actually finished a run of HGSS with Chikorita to this day?? Considering how many times I’ve replayed it, no idea how that hasn’t happened yet. Guess I just keep restarting those runs or something, cause I’ve never even had a Meganium. I also still read Meganium as Magnamum all the time cause I guess kid me couldn’t read and now Magnamum is seared into my brain??? Idk

💜 Favorite song: This can change from moment to moment, but for the past couple of years it's been "Heaven Is a Place On Earth" by Belinda Carlisle. Feels like I've always loved Belinda's voice from the moment I heard her singing with the Go-Gos, and this particular song was put back on my radar big-time by an episode of “Black Mirror” (San Junipero). Look, I'm a child of the 80's, I'm a hopeful romantic, and I love happy, bubbly (sappy) pop songs, okay? LOL.

💜 Favorite movie: I have two and both must be mentioned - "The Black Stallion" (1979) and "Carol" (2015). One is a horse film, one is a lesbian love story. Both are cinematic works of art and I had spiritual epiphanies watching both. Fun Fact: Having a spiritual epiphany at age 4 is kinda tough. [chuckles] I handled the "Carol" epiphany a bit better. 😉

🤎 My fave movies are “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” & “Tipping the Velvet”. I’m aware of how problemic the first movie is, as it’s a 50’s musical. I just adore musicals and grew up watching so many older ones, so I’m more forgiving for those than more recent movies. “Tipping the Velvet” was a lovely book by Sarah Waters, so when I heard the BBC had done a mini-series of it, I just had to see that lesbian hero’s journey brought to life! 🤩

1. Financial stability for both my loved ones and me for the rest of our lives (while still being able to travel).
