Carlos II ante la Sagrada Forma
by Pedro Ruiz González (Toledan, 1640 – 1706) oil on canvas (166,2 × 232,1 cm), 1683
Museo de Arte de Ponce
November 29th marks, in the Hispanic world, the Feast of the Most Blessed Sacrament, also known as the Little Corpus (”Corpus Chiquito” or “Corpus Pequeño”). It was one of two main Catholic festivities in November alongside the Feast of the Patronage of the Virgin, which was celebrated each second Sunday of the month.

Frederic Leighton’s 1895 painting Flaming June is currently on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is on loan from Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico, which is currently undergoing earthquake-related renovations.
From The Met’s website about the work-
According to Leighton, the composition was inspired by the posture of a tired model. He elaborated her sinuous pose and then added sheer orange draperies. Her skin flushed by the sun, she is transformed into a personification of summer heat. The image reflects Leighton’s allegiance to artistic ideals that emphasized harmonious color and form over narrative. This and Lachrymae (hanging nearby) were the last great pair of paintings he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, in 1895. Critics raved, but tastes soon changed; Flaming June did not regain its fame until the Museo de Arte de Ponce acquired it in the 196os. The frame is a reconstruction of the lost original designed by the artist.
This work will be on view until February of 2024.

The Prince Enters the Wood 1871–73
The paintings depict the legend of Sleeping Beauty also called Briar Rose from Sir Edward Burne-Jones showing the prince discovering rival knights.
Many of the poses blur the line between sleep and death underscoring the stillness of their enchanted slumber. Burne-Jones linked the scenes through the repeated motif of overgrown roses. Their undulating tendrils recall the textile and wallpaper designs of his friend and collaborator William Morris.

Frederic Leighton - Flaming June - 1895 - oil on 47-by-47-inch canvas.
Flaming June disappeared from view in the 1930s and was rediscovered in the 1960s. It was auctioned shortly after, during a period of time known to be difficult for selling Victorian era paintings, where it failed to sell for its low reserve price of $140 After the auction, it was promptly purchased by the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It is currently on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where it will be on display until February 2024.

One of Leighton's studies for Flaming June
The position of the sleeping woman gave Leighton a great deal of trouble. He made several preliminary sketches to determine the way in which she should lie; in particular he had difficulty making the angle of her right arm look natural.
While the body of the woman remains a mystery, there is speculation that the face is that of his favourite model in the 1890s, Dorothy Dene. (below)

I have a little notebook that has this painting decorating its front cover. I always carry it with me to write down any and every word that the day conceives. Sometimes it's a phrase that morphs into a title or full verse. Sometimes I write full poems. Sometimes I write nothing at all. Even so, it's comforting to feel its weight in my messenger bag knowing that I have my studio with me wherever I go...

Victorian Masterpieces from the Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico
This special installation will feature five Victorian masterpieces from the collection of the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico. The exceptional loans include the iconic Flaming June by Frederic Leighton, John Everett Millais’s The Escape of a Heretic, 1559, and Edward Burne-Jones’s Small Briar Rose series (The Prince Enters the Wood, The King and His Court, and The Sleeping Beauty, all painted 1871–73).
The paintings will be displayed in the galleries for 19th- and early-20th-century European paintings and sculpture, presented in dialogue with other works by artists at The Met. Most notably, the presentation will bring together Leighton’s Flaming June with Lachrymae (1894–95, The Met), two of his last monumental oil paintings. Although the two works have been in several exhibitions together, this is the first time that they will be displayed side by side.
Since the Museo de Arte de Ponce has been closed for repair following devastating earthquakes in 2020, this partnership allows the public to continue viewing their most important artworks while also showcasing meaningful connections with The Met's collection. …
