Word vomiting about an idea that I was letting sit in my head that would make DW Zhang Chunhua more than whatever the canon/fanon thinks of her. None of is this true, just speculating a possibility.
Based on a DW8 convo she has with Sima Yi, she brews medicine for him herself. Sima Yi would rather admit he was faking being sick than drink it, which haha, he's such a little kid. But the other aspect this seems to reveal about her is that she has pretty good knowledge of general medicine. Now it is not confirmed if the medicine she makes works, but they just seem to taste awful. Most Chinese medicine is bitter and awful tasting, but sometimes, the worse tasting means the most effective. (Not scientifically proven, do not come at me for that.)
She also seems to have an understanding of human anatomy based on the anecdote where she killed the family maid that she famously has to her name. She strangled the maid, which is an easy method of killing since it doesn't need that much pressure on the human neck, it just has to be continuous. Obviously, not having blood spill makes a crime easier to hide. But maybe she knew it was a faster way to die.
There is not much information about her family but it can be inferred that she was not poor since her father was a magistrate. Likely she could have had an education or at least can read and write. Being literate would allow her to read medical texts. There is a text that details various plants and their properties called the Shennong Ben Cao Jing that was written during the Han Dynasty. (Sometimes it's said Shennong himself wrote it. And I am going to guess that one is canon in DW China since it seems like he was a real guy in Koeiverse.)
In DW8 Empires, something I thought was strangely neat was that Chunhua exists with good virtue. (It's represented by a smiley face and a 1 or 2. 1 means good, 2 is just very good. It works the same for evil people with an evil devil face. Chunhua had a smiley face 1. Sima Yi has a devil face 1.)
I think as a young girl, Chunhua had wanted to pursue becoming a physician but was discouraged because of being a woman. And then she was also due to get married and all that, so she had to put away those ideas. However, she does ultimately like and want to help people, which she mainly does for Sima Yi. DW mainly shows her when she already has children so there is no idea what she could have been like before so it's free real estate for me.
Her wanting to be a doctor or healer (or acting more into it) would also give her some contrast with Yueying who's main thing is some form of ancient era engineering. (STEM lesbians let's go) Gives her room to interact with Lianshi, who does a breath's version of what I had in mind. (I do not think Lianshi canonically has done any medical healing but she seems to do more mental/spiritual healing with her actions. She has a musou healing rain though so maybe I am wrong.)
Her canon personality is alright, it can stay, but there should be more of an intelligent caring side to counter Sima Yi's.... everything.
#*hurrrrgh* random night brain rambling about a video game depiction of a real person#zhang chunhua#important to note this is for only the dw version#i cannot say for the historical person#another layer to this is that i noticed shennong and her have the same special expression#but ill just chalk it up to the koei face sometimes blending together

Annon-Guy: Apologies if I already asked this, but what're your thoughts on Dynasty Warriors and Musou Games (Samurai Warriors, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, Hyrule Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors, Berserk: Band of the Hawk and Attack on Titan)?
Think Guilty Gear (Overture doesn't count sense it's more of a Strategy Action game) and BlazBlue would make good Dynasty Warriors/Musou Games?
I could make commentary on that, but I won't.
Koei-Techmo has their own takes on various ideas when it comes to the Musou games, and I'd argue that some of the Musou games are better constructed than others.
In other words, you can't judge all the Musou/Dynasty games the same way because each has their own nuances.
There's also plenty of games out there that enjoy copy-catting off the Musou idea for their battle engines... even Final Fantasy 16 got away with it in recent memory.
And they don't exactly make games that are fully optimized with the latest console tech if you know what I mean... Most Musou games don't put much emphasis on graphics as much as they would put emphasis on stability (since it's you versus a legion of enemies).
I'd say my experience with the Gundam Musou games and Berserk Musou were okay as a distraction, but I wasn't as motivated to play the games in-depth compared to other games in my library (not even talking about fighting games per se, here).
The unlockables usually have a gauntlet of very difficult bosses or enemies to cleave through, so gaining the benefits of a victory isn't always easy in those games. Nor is there much motivation to do so in some cases.
I do think Hyrule Warriors has an extensive amount of content, however... probably because Nintendo devs insisted upon it. I'd argue it's nearly twice the size of your average Dynasty Warriors game in comparison.
As for Guilty Gear or BlazBlue... Ishiwatari tried to simulated a wartime simulation with Guilty Gear 2 Overture (real time strategy)... and BlazBlue has had various game modes over the years that involved teams of characters (I think the PSP version best expressed what Mori was trying to do with that idea... it's too bad it wasn't used in later games).
If the Crusades was ever expressed as a Musou game, that could definitely work in some ways, but not quite as much as a game like God Eater or Monster Hunter might in terms of a comparison.

Welt's words ring through Kokomi's mind as they reach the final stretch of the climb. The fragmentum monsters are far more scarce here - all but the strongest of them likely driven off by the Engine of Creation's radiant power - and those that remain, weakened by its aura as they are, fall quickly.
And the whole way up, the great construct's energy signature lurks around the corners of her awareness, falling over the whole region like a warm blanket. It may not restore strength to her tired limbs, nor soothe sore joints, but, in some way...she feels safe under its watch, in a way she hasn't felt in nearly a decade.
Blessed by an Aeon, perhaps even forged by Their hand...no wonder that to stand in its presence is to feel the weight of worlds. Even the Raiden Shogun's infamous Musou no Hitotachi would falter against it.
No wonder, then, that this world's inhabitants have begun investigating it. The howling winds drown out their voices, but she doesn't need to be able to hear the two groups to see the clear divisions between them.
Arrayed on one side of the camp stand a group of scientists in the blue and white of the Silvermane Guard - and some Silvermane Guard soldiers bearing guns and halberds for good measure, standing at perfect attention despite the bitter winds. The second group could not be more different; their equipment and gear is visibly aged, battered, and much-repaired, and the only uniformity among their ragged clothes is the bright red armbands. They've brought troops of their own, she realises, cautiously eyeing the squad of blue-grey combat mechs flanking them.
Though, on a closer look, the guards may be as much for show as anything. All the scientists are armed, both Silvermane and Wildfire; and the hard lines of their faces show they're ready and willing to fight. Hopefully, not each other.
Snatches of words gradually become audible as they approach, and Kokomi stops and turns to Welt, leaning on a snow-covered fence. "So they're fighting over the Engine of Creation. I see there's some bad blood between the two factions...there always is, isn't there?"
A particularly loud and aggravated shout echoes across the mountaintop, and she sighs. "...quite a lot of bad blood, I take it. At least they haven't come to blows yet."

Who would be the ideal developers for the Sakura game? Personally speaking I'm pretty sure the Yakuza/Ryu ga Gotoku devs would work quite well with this, especially with the Heat Move system. Using the Dragon Engine would be very funny because then we'd see Sakura punch a guy so hard he goes flying and ragdolls.
I'll answer this along with this ask as they kinda bleed into each other:
I could also expand more on this with a standalone post if people want me to. I will happily make visuals and stuff alongside my explanations. Surprisingly, the way Sakura plays is one of the things I’ve presented the least of so far xD
Slightly long read below.
Great question as, no ill will to them but, I doubt the developers of Danganronpa would be able to do something of this caliber well.
I imagine Sakura plays like a mix of Kiryu's Beast mode from Yakuza 0 and Asura from Asura’s Wrath. Basically, she’s able to pick up and use objects in the environment, deliver lots of knockback with her combo finishers and has a fierce parrying/countering enemies play style that is highly rewarding. The game having a little bit of cinematic elements (like the heat actions) thrown in there would be ideal as well; to fully show off that badassery. Of course, she would still have options to dodge/sidestep but that would either be packed into the countering mechanic or it just wouldn’t reward you as much.
She would have short to medium sized combos but great force in the final attacks. Making Sakura feel great to control and fight with is a big priority; she's in her element after all.
As much as I’d like for her to be a very dodgy, take no damage, “do a thousand attacks that combo into each other” kind of flashy fighter found in Stylish action games, that’s.....just not how I feel like she fights. She says this herself in fact:
Sticking to your ground seems important which I interpret as having a more defensive play or a slugger style. She wouldn’t be the type to do those crazy ground and air combos like in Bayonetta or DMC. I also feel like a Musou game wouldn’t let Sakura pack as much of a punch and will likely get uninteresting if she’s the only character you play as. Beat ‘em up with a hint of stylish action is the best way to go I think.
So my answer is Dragon Engine and things like it, great idea. Teaming up with adventure action game companies (tbh I dont know which would be the best), great idea. We need someone to do her justice dammit.

Hi, I REALLY appreciate your posts on Fire Emblem. You’re really insightful! I have a question though and I hope you don’t mind me asking: what’s the deal with Zelda? I’ve only ever played Twilight Princess and 64 Ocarina. It seems like AoC and SS are controversial, but why?
Why did Skyward Sword almost ruin Zelda for you? (I’m not super familiar with the franchise)
I got two different anons asking pretty much same thing here, so I figured I would answer both in one.
First of all, to the first anon, thank you so much for your kind words about FE! I'm glad someone at least enjoys my posts occasionally. ;)
Now for both anons - Zelda.
For those who don't know, I'm technically not a FE blog. I'm a Zelda blog. At least originally. I know, shocker. My icon is Engineer Link, my name relates to the Goddess of Courage, etc.
Zelda is my #1 favorite franchise of all time.
But oooohhh man, have the latest games been testing my patience.
Let's start with AoC, because that's a shorter answer.
AoC is controversial because of the marketing mostly. When Aonuma presented the game in the trailers, he purposely used language to make it seem like AoC was a proper prequel in BotW.
SPOILERS FOR BOTW: BoTW takes place a 100 years after the Great Calamity, which was when Calamity Ganon emerged from the earth and wrecked havoc on Hyrule. In the process, he killed the 4 Champions, those chosen to pilot the Divine Beasts (which, in turn, are giant mechs designed to kill Calamity Ganon), nearly killed Link (which put Link into a 100 year coma), and Zelda went to seal Ganon and herself for 100 years until Link woke up.
Link awakens to a ruinous Hyrule and meets 4 new people who help him get onto the Divine Beasts to free the souls of the dead Champions. Then he goes to save Zelda, who then seals Calamity Ganon for good, the end.
With all this in mind, AoC being a prequel to BotW sounds like we were supposed to be experiencing the events of those deaths. We never actually see them in BotW, nor do we see much of the past in general. So, it was a very interesting premise.
So when AoC released and it turned out that it was not ACTUALLY a prequel, but a pseudo-canon alternative story where time travel saves the day and no one actually dies, people were PISSED. They felt it invalidated BotW (even though AoC is never stated to be canon in any way as of now) and they felt lied to because they didn't get to experience tragedy. Not to mention that BotW is sort of a soft reboot for the series - Zelda has a complicated timeline with multiple and BotW was set so far in the future that it didn't matter WHERE in the timeline it fell, so Zelda could start fresh. But by adding a new time travel branch, it basically was like a giant middle finger to fans who felt the soft reboot was important.
Now personally, I was not mad at it. Why? Because I saw it coming a mile away. I know the moment I saw the new character (the egg robot Terrako), that this was going to be a story that was not canon to the actual events of the past BotW. I figured time travel would be involved too, because the playable cast from BotW's past would be way too small for a musou. So, use time travel to add future characters into the roster as well. And finally, from what we DO know of the past... it's pretty uneventful. Not much actually happens. The characters really spent more time just talking and walking around than FIGHTING, which is the antithesis of a musou. So, they were going to have to make up a bunch of scenarios that didn't originally exist to justify this musou existing.
While not all my predictions were right about the game, I was overall pretty spot on on what this game would actually be. But I can't deny the marketing was very... misleading, in a dishonest way.
Now, for SS. Why is it both controversial in the community and why do I personally hate it?
As for the community side... it will depend on who you ask. Some absolutely ADORE it because it has ZeLink material (they are canonically crushing on each other), they consider it the best story in the series, and it honestly has some decent dungeons in it. SS is a solid game at it's core.
However, a lot of fans agree that it's... the weakest 3D title of all the 3D Zelda games. It basically has no exploration what-so-ever. It holds your hand the entire way (your companion character, Fi, literally solves riddles and puzzles for you before you even get a chance to actually ponder them). It uses motion control for EVERYTHING (swimming, flying, swinging your sword) and the sensor is... touchy. It doesn't always work as you want, which results in you dying or something dumb. The overworld is empty. The character models are insanely ugly, even Link and Zelda are kinda off. There are repeated bosses that are not considered fun to play at ALL.
It was so badly received by fans that BotW is considered the correction - it went from no freedom to so much freedom that you can literally do almost anything you want without barriers.
But none of those are why I hate SS. I can stomach those. Nah, instead, I think the writing is TERRIBLE.
Fujibashi is the director and he cannot write worth shit. All his games in the Zelda series have the weakest stories. BotW is one of those - most fans agree that BotW has a weak story compared to the older titles.
SS is just awful. It introduced awful story elements that changed Zelda forever, it retconned some important information and made mistakes, it caused a huge fight in the Zelda fandom about what lore is canon and what is not, and the time-travel elements in it are so BADLY done that I can't believe it made it past the control group.
I hate what SS added so much that when those elements wormed their way into BotW's lore, I hated those in BotW as well.
Let's talk about the easy things. Retconning and lore mistakes. Here is a short list.
The Master Sword was originally stated to have been made by sages. SS entirely retcons this by making the MS a sword created by the Goddess then forged into the Master Sword by Link.
The Triforce was originally stated to have been left behind by the Three Golden Goddesses in the Sacred Realm. This was retconned in that the Golden Goddesses left the Triforce in the care of a newly created goddess for this game, Hylia.
It is stated in MULTIPLE GAMES that you must touch the Triforce to make your wish. This is the ONLY game where Link PRAYS in front of the Triforce to get his wish granted. This is a LORE MISTAKE.
But then there are story elements this game adds that makes the rest of the series look strange.
Hylia is such an important figure in Zelda history but then completely vanishes from their daily lives in the rest of the games (barring BotW). It makes it seems like she was forgotten about. This would not have been an issue if BotW hadn't brought her back into the lore again. Now it just looks awkward.
The Loftwings are supposed to be important animals in the lives of the humans, but we never get to name our Loftwing and it plays barely any role in the story what-so-ever.
Hylia's plan is so messy and so dumb that I don't even have time in this post to explain why.
The time travel follows different time travel rules at different times, yet insists that it's a closed perfect loop (it's not).
But there's more! Because SS added two things I hate the MOST: 1. Zelda is now literally divine, and 2. Link may or may not reincarnate.
Let me explain.
Prior to SS, Zelda has always been varying levels of special. Sometimes, she's super special. She's a Sage, or she's a magical princess, or sometimes... she's just a princess. Just depends on the game.
But NOW, she's literally descended from a Goddess. This changes Zelda at it's core. Now, every Zelda is literally of Goddess blood.
Before this change, there was always a sense of separation between the mortals and the gods. The gods chose heroes, or other special people. The mortals had great tasks thrusted upon them. Etc.
Now, though, Zelda is basically a goddess in her own right. So OoT Zelda being chosen by the gods? Well, she's ALSO divine herself so that doesn't mean much. Oh, that Zelda is descended from Sages? GUESS WHAT SHE'S ALSO DESCENDED FROM A GODDESS. That Zelda has a special light inside of her from the Minish? WELL SHE ALSO HAS GODDESS BLOOD TOO, DID YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?!
The Royal Family literally is now divine, and therefore have the divine right to rule as well.
Not to mention how MESSY it makes everything. Zelda's bloodline is special because it goes back to the goddess. But, realistically, have a few hundred years everyone will be descended from the Goddess. So, how in the WORLD is it only the Royal Family now?!
See how it's just pure awful?!
But then it gets worse, because SS decided to add a character called Demise and he, along with Hylia, are the worst additions to Zelda lore.
Hylia... is an idiot. Her plans are stupid. Her thought processes are stupid. She literally forces Kikwi and the swuid things to fight, but apparently Humans are unable too??? What kind of logic is that?! She also is apparently not aware of the importance of the Triforce to the world (another dumb addition might I add).
But Demise, man... Demise was added as a "pre-Ganon" type entity, meant to be the origin of all evil. Fine. Whatever.
But SS plays coy with Demise supposing to be a past Ganon (it's not, btw, they are two different entities) but now a lot of fans believe Demise IS Ganon.
AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF, Demise throws in a "curse" that made everyone believe that Link and Zelda reincarnate to fight Demise's incarnation for all time.
BUT THIS JUST DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE AT ALL!
I don't have the energy to explain why, but let's just say that now, thanks to SS, a lot of newer fans have a lot of bad lore beliefs, and it doesn't help that SS literally plays coy with "maybe it's true, maybe it's not" kinda feel. It's so stupid, and I hate Aonuma and Fujibashi for it.
Hylia being Zelda literally made me almost quit Zelda forever. Over time, I've come to accept this revelation a bit more, but I still hate it to this very day.
I could go on. But I'm out of time and energy. This is just the tip of the iceberg, and I hope it makes some sense.

It seems so strange to me that IS went the "fun obviuosly non-canon fanservise game" for warriors and did "wow new lore just ropped let's make a mess out of already messy 3H game" for 3nopes. Was Warriors sales so bad they need a differet strategy? They realized that 3H fanbase doesn't care at all about pevious entries in the series? I've seen somebody talking about how 3nopes is the most plitics in FE game, like Jugral who?
I'm not sure about it -
Of course we have devoted people who most likely only played FE16 and have a very surface reading of the previous games, who suddenly start to misinterpret everything and, as you pointed out, start to call FE16 the most political in a franchise with Tellius and Jugdral...
Or very devoted people who played the other games and, in bad faith, are warping their message to fit with their perceived canon of FE16 (dragons bad in Archanea for instance).
And if they made an all stars warrior game (not like the first one, obviously) I don't think those devoted persons would play a game where you can use Siggy to destroy mooks.
IDK what happened with FE16, but there are clues all around that maybe the devs wanted to make more DLC, but it never happened - because of Covid, or because of something else - so all those assets and "unused" or "ready for the DLC" lore were here, waiting to be used. Why not make a warrior game, since the engine was already there?
Add the hype that made people buy Age of Calamity (a "canon" story about Link'n'Zelda'n'Garon!) and 3 Nopes is a safe choice, Fodlan is FE's golden child (much like Fates was at the time of the first FEW?) so it will sell, add to that the promise of a "different story that could be canon if you want to eat watermelons in winter" and "uwu meet the students with new designs!!" and it was supposed to be perfect!
But then player pandering striked hard, the lords cannot be their best selves without Billy, Clout is Clout'd, Supreme Leader becomes Supreme Puppet and Dimitri is still lost about what he wants to do with his life.
People were starved for new lore for Fodlan since the game was unfinished and never released the promised DLCs, so they banked on it to make this and...
Well.
I'll only take 5 sesame seeds on 3 Nopes's burger, but the rest I can safely leave it on my plate.
And idk about the real sales, but on some social networks, the outcry about the leaked plot (and Clout) was so terrible that apparently people refused to buy the game?? Rhea returning in the freezer and Billy never appearing disappointed some people who might have wanted to buy the game for them, and just don't want anymore.
Coupled with Clout and Supreme Puppet - the "plot" of the game, the thing that is supposed to be nigh useless in a Musou Game is so bad that people don't want to buy it anymore.
I won't say it's a good or a bad thing (maybe they were just on the fence) but for sure, I'm sure they could have made more money if they sold it as a "lol fanservice" game like in the first Musou, instead of showering their previous avatar with praise by writing how sad are the uwu students without them (save for Rhea, who thrives when she's not relegated to uwu'ing about Billy).
#anon#replies#3 nopes#3 nopes spoilers#FE16#Billy'n'Barney#tbf the character who suffers the most from player pandering and the uwu hammer might be billy themselves#food for thought I was really tempted by the first FEW#but then the roasted was leaked and I nope'd out#FEH worked better as a crossover game#3 Nopes is going to follow Age of Calamity

For a AAA studio that could afford to build their own game engine, why might they do that instead of using Unreal or another liscense-able engine?

There’s a couple of reasons why they’d choose to do that. The simplest one is “they already have an engine they’ve been maintaining for a long time and don’t want to pay the additional cost to license the engine and pay out a portion of that revenue to Epic or Unity”. If they have a solid engine their dev team is familiar with and it does the job, why spend more if they don’t have to? It’s the classic “we already have food at home” answer. This can also apply to forward-looking company decisions as well. For example, Square-Enix decided to build the Luminous Engine for future use. They used it in Final Fantasy XV and are currently working on an unannounced AAA game with it.
Even if you don’t have an engine that does everything you want, sometimes you still want to build your own. Not all game engines are created equal. Similar to how you allocate stats to customize a character in your favorite RPG, different game engines have elements they are optimized for and elements they are not so good at. Unreal, for example, does a ton of 3D optimization but doesn’t handle things like 2D as well. The game might have a very specific set of requirements that off-the-shelf engines don’t expect or support well, like a Musou game that requires dozens or hundreds of enemies on the screen active and animating at once without killing performance, a shoot-em-up that needs thousands of bullets moving on screen at once, or a MMOG that has more specific networking and back end needs. In cases like these, it makes a lot of sense to build the engine yourself.
I’m also fond of reminding people that game developers are human and not always-rational decision-making robots. Sometimes you have studio leadership who just want their own engine. Maybe they plan on building future games with it, maybe they believe their grasp of technology is just better, or maybe they are just super egotistical. Lots of things can happen. It isn’t a common decision, but it is a thing that shows up from time to time.

Games In August (2020): “Demos, Demos Everywhere” Edition

This month, I cope with the inability to purchase new games by playing a lot of demos. Like... a LOT of demos.

DJ Max Respect System: PS4
What is it? It’s a rhythm game in the vein of Guitar Hero (except there’s no need for overpriced plastic peripherals)
What did I think? I think this is the first time I’ve ever mentioned it here, but I fucking LOVE rhythm games. Anyway, this was my most played demo, mostly because the format is 100 times more replayable than any of the other demos, but that’s burying the lede. This was pretty fun... not sure it’s the kind of game I want to play on a PS4 pad though.
Would I buy it? The answer should be yes, but the game was totally on sale all month and I didn’t end up buying it. It looks like fun, and I would probably buy it if it went cheaper, but probably not before looking at controller options.

Shining Resonance: Refrain System: PS4
What is it? It’s an ARPG. Apparently it was originally a Japan-only PS3 game, with Refrain being a PS4 port.
What did I think? Nope. You know what I hate more than generic af JRPG’s and shitty harem animes? It’s generic JRPG’s with shitty harem anime plots
Would I buy it? God no

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom System: PS4
What is it? It’s an actiony platformer, strong emphasis on the action part.
What did I think? The platforming is a little weak and fighting enemies feels more than a little clunky, but honestly? This is pretty charming. It helps that the game lets you play in pig form (I’m always on board for anthropomorphic pigs)
Would I buy it? The normal price is way too steep, but if it ever went on sale, hell yeah I’d buy this

Arslan: Warriors of Legend System: PS4
What is it? It’s Dynasty Warriors but with Arslan (which is apparently a manga?)
What did I think? The demo sucked and the gameplay is pretty low tier, even for a Musou game. Can you believe that even the DW8 engine can be made boring? (Before you answer, I can believe it. Because I don’t like DW8. At all)
Would I buy it? I actually wanted to buy this before but this demo completely unsold me on the game. I don’t want a worse Dynasty Warriors 8. I didn’t even like Dynasty Warriors 8 to begin with!

Utawarerumono ZAN System: PS4
What is it? It is a Musou spinoff for some oldish visual novel series? I swear I’ve seen this series on TV before (back when I was visiting my overseas relatives a few years back)
What did I think? It seems pretty okay. As a demo, it’s perfect; it gives you just enough options, just enough replayability to leave you wanting more. But I’m not actually sold on the game’s systems, since it seems to be aping the Musou subgenre while replacing the strategy elements with more RPG stuff (and in my opinion, the best Musou games hone in on the strategy elements, NOT get rid of them). It’s a bold move, though I’m kinda interested to see if it works, just bc any Musou / Musou clone that has character switching immediately has my attention
Would I buy it? If I ever see it on sale, I’ll definitely pick it up because I’d really like to see the game’s take on the Musou genre really shakes out. Not sure I’d settle for anything higher than $20 though.

Songbird Symphony System: PS4
What is it? It’s a platformer (oh no) but with rhythm game elements (oh yeah)
What did I think? Despite advertising itself as a rhythm platformer, I’m not sure it’s particularly good at the rhythm elements OR the platform elements, but it sure is charming. I will say that it kinda sucks that the game clearly wants to be a proper musical... but apparently didn’t have the budget for actual vocals.
Would I buy it? If I see it cheap, I won’t say no.

Coffee Talk System: PS4
What is it? It seems to be a visual novel with some sim elements focused around being a barista. Also, it was made in Australia. Yay for Aussie game devs! 2022 EDIT: Okay, so apparently it wasn’t made in Australia. I don’t know what made me think that it was, but that was my bad.
What did I think? Despite being the least qualified person to play this type of game (what even is a ‘the coffee’?) this seems pretty neat.
Would I buy it? If I wasn’t currently abstaining from buying games, yes

Cris Tales System: PS4
What is it? It’s a turn based RPG with time puzzles? Sort of?
What did I think? It’s a pretty little RPG with a cool looking lead and a neat premise that had me... up until it didn’t (i.e. when the demo crashed after almost an hour of gameplay). I know it’s just a demo, but if I’d bought this, I’d be pretty annoyed to have lost that much progress.
Would I buy it? Not sure. It looks fun but the performance is kinda bad (even ignoring the demo crashing, the game FPS runs pretty slow in certain areas). Idk I need to research the PS4 version, but I’m leaning towards no

Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories System: PS4
What is it? ...I honestly don’t even know. The best I can describe this as is the Yakuza series if it was about surviving natural disasters instead of punching guys as Yakuza Jesus
What did I think? It’s jank, but it is *incredibly charming* jank. Seriously, I barely did anything in the demo but I was intrigued the entire way through.
Would I buy it? Oh god yes. Only on sale though. This is fun, but not “I can casually drop $90 in Australian Dollars for this” type of fun.

Lost Sphear System: PS4
What is it? It’s a JRPG and it has an ATB combat system. That is all I was able to figure out on my own. Seriously.
What did I think? This has to be one of the worst demos I’ve ever played. You get zero context for the esoteric story and gameplay. I don’t really mind the esoteric story, since I have played a lot of demos with zero context, but the gameplay being this complicated without any explanation is just terrible. This is not how you do a demo.
Would I buy it? I don’t want to be unfair on the game, since it seems to have depth and I specifically take issue with the demo. But if I was someone who had less time in my life, I definitely wouldn’t feel guilty skipping over this. This demo was baaaad.

Dragon Quest: Builders 1 and 2 System: PS4
What is it? It’s Minecraft but with a Dragon Quest coat of paint
What did I think? While I am a sucker for Dragon Quest spinoffs (seriously I’ve put so much time into titles like Heroes 1, Heroes 2, Rocket Slime and Monsters) this didn’t do anything for me. I just don’t enjoy Minecraft’s gameplay loop at all
Would I buy it? No to Minecraft, no to Dragon Quest Minecraft

Langrisser I + II System: PS4
What is it? It’s a remaster of two old SRPG’s, Langrisser 1 and 2.
What did I think? This is great! It totally made me remember that “SRPG’s are pretty neat, aren’t they?” The gameplay system in particular seems really neat, like some weird mishmash of Fire Emblem and Advance Wars (note: I really like Advance Wars). I’m kinda surprised that a game of this age has a battle system like this. Also that vintage 80 / 90′s aeshetic...
Would I buy it? When I have money, yes, yes I will.

Gravity Rush 2 System: PS4
What is it? It’s a third-person action game centered around gravity powers
What did I think? I always planned on buying this, but this demo has me wanting a copy right now. This demo is already so much more fun than the entirety Gravity Rush 1 (the visual / audio feedback of the game is so much better, also the extra moveset options seem great).
Would I buy it? I always intended to buy this, but playing this has me wanting to ignore my “if I want a game, and it’s not digital only, I am only allowed to buy a physical copy” rule. I *really* want to get this game RIGHT NOW

PixelJunk Monsters 2 System: PS4
What is it? It’s a Tower Defense game... with a twist
What did I think? PixelJunk is a name I haven’t heard since the early PS3 days... Anyway, I gave this game a shot and it’s... not good. I like Tower Defense games but this game basically removes the fun, fast pace of TD’s with zany mechanics I don’t agree with (like needing to manually pick up loot with a character). The only interesting wrinkle is the co-op... which the demo doesn’t actually let you try
Would I buy it? Hard pass, there are a ton of freeware TD games with a much faster and more satisfying gameplay pace than this

I Wanted an Excuse to Talk About Xun Yu and DW6
Xun Yu’s up there as possibly my favourite Wei character for a few reasons. Firstly, I love his design, in both 8 Empires and 9. I prefer 9 though; it’s probably my favourite design in that entire game.
I’ve never been a fan of the throwing knives weapon though, which is a bit disappointing considering it’s his EX weapon in that game, although since switching weapons became a feature in 7 it’s nothing that can’t be fixed. Doubly disappointing because of how much I loved his weapon in Empires, but anyway.
His personality has never shone through to me much, but this might have something to do with the only games he’s appeared in being 8 Empires, a spin-off, and 9, where the writing was stilted and awkward to all hell.
However, my main reason for loving Xun Yu actually has nothing to do with the character itself, instead from a game he wasn’t even a part of; Dynasty Warriors 6. This is going to get pretty long-winded and somewhat sentimental, just a warning. That game was a game I sunk hours and hours into growing up, and unlike 3 I was old enough to actually make sense of what was going on when I played it. My brothers owned a copy of 3 and 3 Xtreme Legends which I got to play on the PS2 which introduced me to the series, but it would be Dynasty Warriors 6, years later that’d really get me into it. Back in 3, the character I’d always play was Lu Xun, although I’d pronounce it “Luh Ksun”. Why? He had two swords, and that was cool. If you attacked in midair he did a front flip and slash with both swords, which was cool. But in 6, he was completely different. He didn’t have his two swords and he looked much more... regal? He was nowhere near as appealing to me, but I remembered liking him in 3 so I still picked his story in Musou mode. And the level that greeted me that truly cemented my love of Wu and Dynasty Warriors in general.
Everything about that stage was perfect to me. The bright colours, the openness of the level, the context of rushing a castle while the owner is away, the urgency of the whole attack, and to top it all off? This God-like song kicks in as the camera zooms in on the battlefield;
youtube
Sun Ce chimes in, “Our goal is to take Xuchang, press forward and wipe out the enemy!” as you ride forward to the first main gate (or, if you were Lu Xun like me, you’d spawn on the side of the castle and have to ride back round to the front because storming the front was so much cooler than sneaking round the back) and start slaying the Defence Captains so you can build the rams. Later on you break through both main gates and charge up the stairs to the palace, hearing another voice, “Perhaps he is worthy of the name Little Conqueror”. It wasn’t Cao Cao, and it wasn’t another intimidating member of Wei standing in your path, but instead just an NPC. An NPC named Xun Yu.
I replayed the Invasion of Xuchang countless times. I still get incredibly nostalgic hearing Welcome to China, and that level is what lead to my current love of Wu, particularly characters like Lu Xun, Zhou Yu and Sun Ce. And at the end of it all, was Xun Yu. He’s been someone I’ve been interested in since, and learning of his actual importance in real history only made me want him as a playable character more. It really is a shame that he hasn’t been a part of a game tfhat’s really allowed him to flourish as a character, because I’d eat that shit up.
Also if they remade the Invasion of Xuchang level from 6 in 8′s engine with all the new characters in the right places i’d literally die-

manaborn replied to your post: Sorry I haven’t been on in a few days, been having...
is it? ive debated about getting it
Depending on how much you like the Warriors games then you’ll really like it cause it genuinely has the best and fastest feeling combat out of all of them. There are some strange character and story cuts from 3 to 4(Story starts at Alabasta and there’s a lot of skipping), but I think it’s a new engine and they probably focused on making new characters over re-making certain old ones.
Instead of usual levels, everyone has a “Growth map” which is spending coins and berries for stat increases, new passive skills and new specials(Instead of two Musou attacks you can use up to 4 specials, and you get way more, but not all of them are Musou attacks). There are now 4 character types that determine how the character is played(Power, Speed, Technique and Sky), new and improved air combat(Especially for Sky types), and a power dash that lets you run through everyone, whose properties depend on your character’s type
Also everyone is finally their canon heights so Whitebeard is finally the biggest character in the goddamn game instead of just slightly taller than the genetic officers
#manaborn#*Out of chi#Also just for my benefit Luffy's post timeskip moveset is finally good in fact he's one of the best characters in the game#I rambled a bit on this but I have played like 15 hours of it in the past week

DOA6 post-weekend binge talk w/ spoils
Finished DOA6's story mode, like 80% through DOA Quest, played a lil over 100 matches online, unlocked maybe 4 costumes. Overall its all mostly good there's just not enough of it? Like the core gameplay, graphics, music are all great and improved a lot I think over DOA5, but all the trimmings are pretty scant so far. The exclusion of lobby mode at launch is already pretty maligned but we at least know we'll get it within the month. The story mode felt pretty rushed and disjointed especially near the end, reflecting the apparent 30 episodes that had to be cut for time, that will hopefully release as DLC later with a hopefully reasonable price.
DOA Quest I really really like, but I think more could have been done with it, and based on what seems like will be timed events in the game and the likelihood of a FTP version releasing I'm guessing DOA Quest might be expanded along with certain events. I'm almost finished with the base quests after only 2 days and its basically the only way to unlock stuff and I've barely unlocked anything yet... I think it would do really well with a procedurally generated quest mode where a new set of 3 are generated randomly every hour similar to the Yokai Realm missions in Nioh.
Because the reward system needs a major overhaul and basically makes Arcade, Survival, and Time Trial modes feel utterly pointless outside of practice, which you could just do in training or online. Like basically you have to obtain a certain number of parts for outfits to unlock them, and you're given those points at random on the completion of an online match or an Arcade/Survival/Time Trial mode and well, look at this

They basically give you a part reward that's like a random number between 1 and 15. This image is from Survival on Easy but I went and did a Master difficulty Arcade mode and ended up with 7... online matches are better and tend to give you 15-30 but its still pretty fucked. In DOA5 I used to take a break from playing and gettin trashed online by going and unlocking a couple outfits in Arcade or Survival and that really wouldn't work here. Starting tonight after maintenance they'll have it to where rewards are multiplied by 10 for the release event. Which I'll probably spend that time just grinding for all the unlockables while I can, and they really oughta just leave it multiplied after that.
Netcode is good. The majority of the matches I played were lag free and my internet is usually shit in general so that's good.
And outside of the it being really scant in nature, I did like most of the story that was there. It actually was sorta DOA5.5, starting from scratch as to who Honoka and Marie and Nyotengu and Even-More-Evil-Raidou were since they were basically DLC characters without much in game context. Marie and Honoka naturally stuck out like sore thumbs but in a pretty amusing way. Like watching Christie escaping via helicopter with an unconscious busty anime schoolgirl under her arm or Bayman walking around with a gothic lolita over his shoulder. Nyotengu's arc sorta went nowhere but as a character she is a hugely welcome addition to the cast and I hope she somehow appears in Nioh 2, and gladly apparently more story for her is the focus of the possible story DLC according to Shimbori and them. Diego and NiCO too. Diego was fun in his final bout with Jann Lee I was like "man that just overloaded with hypermasculinity" and then I was awarded the title "Manly Men" and that really cinched the tone, though a shame that Leifang and Jann Lee still in its holding pattern. And NiCO I really love playing and it was funny to watch them make excuses earlier in the story while she was just working in the lab with Christie as to how a fight needed to break out and so everything anyone said to her just pissed her off. Same with Kokoro! Actually everyone is just fuckin sisters now! That was some great soap opera bullshit! But again felt so skimmed from the lack of episodes. And Frankenstein Raidou was a thing I wasn't really excited for but it coulda been worse in the end. Guess after all that I need to go peruse the encyclopedia.
After all that not much left to do except start grinding ranked and hoping for good updates coming soon. And that's the thing I been seeing a lot of people even DOA fans online saying they just wanna wait on a complete edition release and like maybe that'd be a good idea. I hope the initial release does well, but it is lacking. They announced this last June and are releasing it now so its fair to say this game maybe had a bare single year development in a new third party engine while they also probably have their team working on Dissidia, Musou, Venus Vacation, and Nioh 2 at the same time so yeah, a good chance the trimmings of this game had to be cut down on just to make sure they released the game within a year with the core elements as good as they are. Just gotta hope they put out good updates.
