"Jaune Gets A Gun AU" Somewhere in Vale...

Inspired by @howlingday's RU-JA-GUN-CON

Neo was walking along, merrily eating an ice cream cone, totally enjoying her free time away from "Fire Bitch" when she heard the sound of multiple trash cans being knocked about. Finishing her cone, Neo moved into the alley and hopped her way to take a seat on the nearest fire-escape...

She tilted her head to the side as she watched a rather unique looking young woman utterly trashing the rear of the alley...

After about 5 minutes, Neo growing board hoped down and approached the young woman, who had just finished demolishing her surroundings, only to realize the figure was talking to herself... out loud and answering herself back.

????: Calm down, Harley. You'll find him, even without that shitbag douche's help.

Neo paused in her approach, her sense of self-preservation kicking in. This Harley... was even a little more unhinged than Neo was. Correct that... FAR more.

Haley (Calm): Now, now, Harley... Mxy did warn you...

Harley (Angry): He's still a little shit douche!

Harley (Calm): Yes, yes... but we have work to do.

I'm going to assume that you are referring to this ask. If I'm wrong and you're referring to something else, please let me know so that I can make a more sensible rebuttal.

So the first possibility is that you were referring to my annoyance about the perennial crop of dumpster mushrooms people keep coming up with with regards to Jin Guangyao and Mo Xuanyu. It always amazes me that the purity police are so determined that their faves must be perfect that they completely strip them of any agency. Mo Xuanyu can't be both a cool character and a fucked-up little dude who harassed his brother, he has to be a perpetual victim, forever suffering until one day he just snaps.

Incase you were wondering, summoning Satan to murder your relatives is not, in fact, healthy behaviour. It's fucked up! Yes, even if they're awful! And it is in fact one of many fucked-up things MXY did, one of which was harass his half-brother.

Anyway, it pisses me off that people try to make the whole 'kicked out of JLT' thing somehow JGY's fault because, even aside from what I mentioned in the original post about the wounds and such, it takes one of the very few pieces of information we know about Mo Xuanyu from his own pen, and removes his agency in the situation completely. And that's not even going into how mind-bogglingly stupid it would have been for JGY to set up a plot that even touches on incest, considering...*waves at the whole Qin Su situation*.

It's okay to like Mo Xuanyu even though he's not a paragon of moral purity. This is MDZS, there are no paragons here.

The other possibility is that you're referring to my distaste for murderYao in AUs. To which I say...well, show me the pressures. Show me the forces that caused Jin Guangyao, alone of the entire cast, to still have comitted his canonical crimes. If Wei Wuxian isn't making anyone cannibalize themselves and Nie Mingjue isn't constantly on the ragged edge of sanity, one wrong word away from a murderous rampage, why is Jin Guangyao still somehow a murderer? If Wei Wuxian gets to be a Manic Pixie Dream Necromancer and Nie Mingjue gets to be, idk, a professional bunny cuddler, why doesn't Jin Guangyao get to be a wedding planner of awesome and terrifying efficiency or something?

So those are the two things from that post that I thought might have upset you, Nonny. “You can’t actually be serious,” he protested. “I mean, who doesn’t know that I’m Wei Wuxian by now? Even if Mo Xuanyu was one of Jin Guangshan’s sons, I’m definitely not – why in the world would anyone want to make me Sect Leader Jin? I mean, Jin Ling is right there!”

“He’s too young,” Jiang Cheng said, then scowled when Wei Wuxian shot him an incredulous look. “Not by my standards, by theirs! There’s an age limit, and he hasn’t met it yet; it’s as simple as that.”

“All right, all right, fine, let’s say I buy that –” Wei Wuxian breezily ignored Jiang Cheng’s incredulous “Buy what?!” “– that still doesn’t explain why the Jin sect would be willing, much less eager to put me in charge. Me! I mean, I’ve done so many terrible things!”

Lan Jingyi scratched his head. “Uh, I mean, their last sect leader murdered the previous one, so they’re clearly not picky.”

Lan Sizhui, blushing bright red, kicked him in the shin.

Everyone else pretended as hard as they could that they hadn’t heard.

“Jinlin Tower has a number of enchantments and arrays that are triggered only through a blood connection,” Jiang Cheng said through gritted teeth. “And before you say ‘well don’t they have cousins’, the entire point is that, apparently, in Lanling Jin one of the ways the sect leader’s main family keeps power is by monopolizing access to those arrays. If we transfer it over to another family as regent for Jin Ling, there’s no telling whether they’ll give it back when it’s time, and once they have the power, we wouldn’t be able to force them to do it.”

Well, shit. That actually made sense – assuming you were a paranoid from a family of paranoids that viewed their own extended family as the biggest threat to their power.

Sadly, that described the standard Lanling Jin sect to a tee.

Well, he supposed that stupid peacock Jin Zixuan wasn’t like that – he was just stupid, arrogant, and awkward. Come to think of it, if it wasn’t for all those arrays and whatnot acting as a guarantee, Wei Wuxian would really have had to wonder if the former Madame Jin hadn’t just pulled a fast one on Jin Guangshan…

Eh, he supposed some people just took after their mothers. Look at Jin Ling, he was shijie’s boy through and through, with only a little Jin arrogance on him like gilt – absolutely perfect.

And, of course, if Wei Wuxian refused this ‘honor’, it was Jin Ling’s patrimony that was going to disappear.

Wei Wuxian groaned.

“Yeah,” Jiang Cheng said grimly. “I know.”

“Do I have to, you know, actually run the place?” he asked, rubbing his face. “I’m going to put it out there right now, I have no idea how to run a sect – and Jiang Cheng can’t run two sects at once no matter how hard he tries. He’ll explode.”

Jiang Cheng looked annoyed but also like he couldn’t deny it.

“And before anyone says anything,” Wei Wuxian added, knowing that Lan Jingyi was only resisting saying something stupid on account of Lan Sizhui’s vice-tight grip on his arm,” Lan Zhan is great in many ways, but he also has no idea how to run a sect.”

That had been pretty obvious in the first month or two after Lan Xichen had gone into his year-long seclusion. Lan Wangji was an amazing cultivator, a fearsome fighter, a stellar night-hunter, a superlative solver of problems, a terrific teacher of juniors…but he didn’t understand people, he had no patience for fools, and while he could fill out sect paperwork, it bored him to the point where, even when trying his best to be diligent, he often ended up filling things out without thinking them through, leading to all sorts of disasters.

Lan Qiren had had to take over.

The irascible old teacher wasn’t notably better at understanding people, but he’d clearly forced himself to learn the skill in a way that Lan Wangji hadn’t, and he had several decades’ worth of experience besides. He hadn’t enjoyed coming out retirement to be acting sect leader again one bit, which had made his already formidable temper worse than usual – immediately springing to mind was that brief interlude where he’d gotten sick of Wei Wuxian’s (possibly slightly in bad taste) joking around and briefly banned the entire Cloud Recesses from interacting with him – and Wei Wuxian was pretty sure that no one was happier than he was when Lan Xichen finally re-emerged from seclusion, more solemn but steadier and centered in a way he hadn’t been before the seclusion.

“Is there someone in the Jin sect I could rely on, maybe..?”

Wei Wuxian looked around.

Everyone’s faces were grim.

Yeah, he hadn’t really thought so. In order to maintain complete control and power, Jin Guangshan had deliberately created a destabilizing atmosphere of backstabbing and internal politicking, each family branch out for themselves, and Jin Guangyao had followed in his odious father’s lead on that score, however pretty a face he’d put on it to the rest of the world.

“No,” Jiang Cheng finally said, completely unnecessarily. “That’s just asking for corruption and sabotage. We need someone who will be a reliable regent for Jin Ling, not a schemer looking for a way to steal the role or a thief looking to pad their family’s wealth while they can.”

“What’s your suggestion, then?” Wei Wuxian argued back. “I can’t do it! I really, really can’t. At least Lan Zhan has had training on what to do, the closest I ever got to being sect leader is being head disciple, which isn’t the same at all –”

“Definitely not,” Lan Jingyi interjected fervently, probably because he had somehow found himself being named the Lan sect’s head disciple of his own generation. Wei Wuxian had originally wondered why they hadn’t gone with Lan Sizhui, who in his (completely non-biased) opinion was the natural choice. Or, well, at least he’d wondered right up until he’d seen Lan Sizhui being completely incapable of rejecting requests from anyone younger than him that made a sad expression at him. Being head disciple meant being willing to impose discipline on those around you, potentially being the target of anger and resentment, and that just wasn’t Lan Sizhui’s personality.

(Lan Jingyi, on the other hand, was a head disciple in Wei Wuxian’s own model: being just too much fun for anyone to mind it too much when he really did impose discipline.)

“What about the Yiling Burial Mounds?”

Wei Wuxian snorted. “I’m sorry, you think I ran that place? It was Wen Qing from beginning to end.”

Jiang Cheng didn’t even have the grace to look surprised, the asshole.

(Neither did Lan Wangji, but that was just because Wei Wuxian’s perfect husband knew him so well. How cute!)

“There is only one solution,” Lan Wangji said. He had a very rare expression on his face – completely undecipherable to anyone else, but readable to Wei Wuxian as…apologetic?

Wait, why was Lan Wangji feeling apologetic?

“I agree,” Jiang Cheng said, and he looked gleeful – which was even more worrying. “My apologies to your uncle, Hanguang-jun, but we’re going to have to have him come out of retirement one more time.”

“Wait,” Wei Wuxian said, horror dawning. “Wait, wait, no. No. I’m not running the Jin sect with Lan Qiren –”

MCU - F I R E F L Y by SheDreamsByDay (tumblr?) There is so much going on in this fic, but here's the super CliffNotes version: set right after the end of the Hawkeye series, Kate is lonely, Yelena is out on missions, but they start chatting over the phone and become each other's anchor. They get together when Yelena gets back to town, and start trying to take down Red Room 2.0 with the help of Clint and fam, Yelena's parents, Natasha, Wanda, and Shuri. This one is so fucking intense y'all, and has eaten my brain in the best way. I pretty much mainlined the first 24 chapters in 3 days. I mentioned in a comment there that this is a stunning example of the quote "You’re in love with her, here’s the best part: she loves you more than her own life. Here’s the worst part: she loves you so much more than her own life." The things these two are willing to do for each, how far they'll go... There's drama, there's action, there's so much angst and trauma, it can get really dark in places, but the author is very good about putting warnings at the beginning of each chapter about what comes next. Updates regularly every Sunday, and the author replies to pretty much every single comment.

SG - Evil by @thingsanddreamsandstuff Metallo!Lena from the Mxy episode decides that Kara is to blame for her pain and suffering in life, so she hops dimensions to try to kill her. Kara decides that the best way to deal with this (and also the fact that her Lena isn't talking to her) is to go to Other Lena's prison cell in the DEO and become talking buddies. Very angsty, lots of great conversations in various configurations of Kara, Lena, Other Lena, Lex, and Alex. Like, some truly eviscerating lines that make you wince by proxy. According to the stats there's only one chapter to go, was last updated in May, and in the notes of the latest chapter she said the next/last chapter was already partially written, so maybe some comment love will help.

Bea's got serious issues thanks to her fucking parents, Ava is sweet but kinda oblivious, and once again these two have taken up residence in a pine forest. The chapters don't follow a strict linear progression, there's time jumps in between. It's more like a series of moments, until later when they're starting to get their shit together. Mojo's comments: I just love it when Lan Wangji takes a look around his sect -- after they've beaten him nearly to death and are disrespecting wwx's memory AND little a-yuan -- and decides, "I'm done with this shit." So off he wanders, with his new son, to hook up with song lan and xiao xingchen and found a new sect. So it is this new lwj, with no forehead ribbon, who clocks wwx at dafan mtn after he's called back as mxy. Lan xichen, having made a few egregiously poor choices 13 years prior, is lurking around, trying to make amends; jiang cheng is an angry grape; and young lan jingyi is just happy to get to see his old friend once more.

for your avatar mdzs au………have you thought at all about how lwj and wwx meet? Does wwx die and return as a different bender or is there no war between the sect families in this au? I’m just so curious about what scenes/plot ideas you have for this au it is so cool!!!! ^-^

I haven't really expanded on the details of the plot just yet; but I'm always happy to explore possibilities. I've imagined Lwj's and wwx's meeting to be similar to canon: The yunmeng benders visit the northern water tribe to train & study, this time with wwx acting as jc's bodyguard (as he isn't a waterbender).

Now here's when I'm still deciding: I'd like to have it kept on the DL (as in: strictly contained to the yunmeng tribe) that wwx is an airbender; so while the kids are studying in Gusu wwx has to hide his bending. He's posing as jc and jyl´s bodyguard and uses the opportunity to visit the northern water tribe and learn some bending theory/ history + benefit from the library!

However, as we all know, wwx is a gremlin and uses subtle airbending to prank poor unsuspecting gusu lan disciples & elders. He also still sneaks alcohol into the cloud recesses; and does so by using his bending to jump the gigantic ice wall surrounding the place. Lwj catches the annoying little shit who's spent the length of his stay playing pranks on him and his shufu, and reports his ass. He doesn't expose him as an airbender, though.

Over the course of his punishment, wwx wheedles and taunts lwj into practicing with him in secret, using the fact that lwj has never had the occasion to face an airbender in combat before. Dueling between glaciers behind gusu ensues. The rest of the cloud recesses arc pretty much follows canon after that!

I think that if there was a sect war, wwx would reinvent spirit bending to manipulate vengeful spirits. Maybe also energy bending. I'd have to think about it some more.

If wwx died as a result of this war and his bending methods and the ensuing chaos, he'd most likely come back as an earthbender, since mxy is technically a Jin & therefore from the earth kingdom. Wwx would probably have some trouble learning to control his new bending due to it being the opposite of airbending; he might eventually take to sandbending or metalbending though. He is a crafty king after all.

That's really all I can tell you for now! As I develop the AU, I'll draw more scenes & characters. Anyone can also feel free to drop some suggestions into my asks or comment any ideas!

Ok, but the whole Wen Qing sacrificial Au is like one big clusterfuck. And Wei Wuxian wouldn't know shit about the functions of his own new body. So the manhua comes right out with this dude explaining who he is right off the bat. The novel just starts with people complaining about Wei Wuxian. I like this better tbh, we already have to get caught up on every main character in the cast why not just be up front about the dude who dies on page one?

I have feelings (tm) about Mo Xuanyu. I don't really like the 'humor' that comes from Wei Wuxian being in his body after MXY kills himself. Like yeah it isn't Wei Wuxian's fault but it's a lil uncomfortable. And you know what, yeah, I'm going to say it, Nie Huaisang cajoling this like younger person into suicide, making him think it's the only solution to a problem Huaisang himself deals with in like a couple of hours is so incredibly fucked up. Like yeah, I get it, Huaisang is a villain but I feel like MDZS sometimes has a problem with letting us really just sit with horrible implications for very long in the narrative.

Possibly on purpose. Like let's not think too hard about that. Next thing now. Then it's more surprising when it comes together I guess.

This is how the manhua ends the chapter, with the people talking shit on Wei Wuxian over the scene of Mo Xuanyu resurrecting Wei Wuxian using his secret techniques.

And the novel:

i get that some of jc's attitude towards jl is supposed to be taken as him just being a cantankerous cunt but i think that even with that reading, fans miss the point that his attitude isn't cute or harmless. the framing of the scenes where jc berates jl; the music, the expressions wwx makes, the undercurrent of genuine fear/emotional pain on wwx's part, give the atmosphere a tense, heavy, almost awkward weight. jc threatening to whip jl w zidian (even IF both parties did know that would never happen) hits different when we've seen wwx be abused by that weapon. and knowing anything about jc's character at all, tells me it's not something he would joke about either nor something he would say lightly (the scene where he does it certainly doesn't feel jokey or light). whether he would actually do it or not, the intention of that threat is to intimidate jl. on a very base level, to instinctively threaten physical harm (even IFFF jc never "actually" did it) is pretty fucked up actually. and while jl is "comfortable enough" to talk back, mostly his response is actually to run away. and then there's that time where jl flinches back at the end, which he doesn't even do when he's about to be cut in half in the temple--it's either a trained or an instinctive reaction! also, the only other time we see that posture is when wwx is putting his hands up to protect himself from being hit. it's so uncomfortable and like the only semi-sympathetic reasoning is that jc wanted jl to be a little afraid of him and cultivated that fear through verbal threats and an outward lack of concern for jl's person. he probably does genuinely love jl and maybe he never actually followed through (the fact that this is extremely debatable doesn't look GREAT) but even so the results of his hand in jl's guardianship shows in how unhappy and dysfunctional jl is before wwx steps in and literally just goes "hey...i care about you and maybe if you were nicer you could have friends and be happier" and i haven't even gotten INTO jc encouraging jl to be violent towards others at the slightest provocation. how does no one talk about this

also just to add onto the last ask about jl and jc's relationship being a clusterfuck, isn't it weird how even before jl knows "mxy" is wwx, he doesn't bat an eye at jc whipping him in the street, surrounding him with swords, and taking him up to his room to be tortured/killed??? like this is just a thing jc DOES?? HELLO?

oh lmao i talk about this all the time but i'm literally not joking when i say jiang cheng is 100% responsible for jin ling lacking of any sense of self-preservation or humane thought processing in the face of genuine compassion from other people. like ofc jin ling was bound to suffer growing up in such a predatory environment without his parents but jiang cheng seemingly took zero steps to alleviate this and instead encouraged jin ling to center his identity around a tragedy he can't even remember, damaging jin ling's self-perception and ability to connect with peers just for the sake of validating his own grudges and individual trauma.

following wwx and jyl's deaths there is no one left to temper jiang cheng's reliance on physical violence so i'm sure he sees it as an accomplishment that he "only" defaults to threatening jin ling with harsh corporal punishment at the slightest provocation, but in reality he bullies and scares jin ling who nearly gets himself killed for the chance to gain a sliver of respect from one of his closest relatives. and that's not even touching upon jin ling's desensitised view of the violent assault repeatedly carried out by jiang cheng and how that may inform his opinion on how jiang cheng treats HIM

like there is so much shit about jin ling and jiang cheng's relationship that goes completely unaddressed so ppl can feel good about calling jiang cheng a dilf or whatever. jin ling's first scene literally has him trying to murder a visibly scared stranger just because jiang cheng told him to but it's clear we'll never be able to have a conversation about what the fuck was going on there because half the people on here will only acknowledge jin ling's existence to celebrate jiang cheng for selflessly raising his sister's baby despite the (checks notes) 5 seperate scenes where he beats the kid
