why did Spencer say “—a nasty text that my girl Cynthia—” in that one line: an analysis

in The New New Kid on the Rock, Spencer interrupts the scene to answer a text and states, “—just got a nasty text that my girl Cynthia told Pam about this reality show that she should totally check, but she wasn’t really into it ‘cause she’s going to the Crying Fish concert tonight even though they’re totally, like, ripoffs of Saturated Towels in Bloom, you know?”

my question is: why say it like that?

like i understand that “nasty” is meant to mean “cool” here but there are so many other slang words with less harsh connotations. why use NASTY specifically? kinda conveys it as more insulting when something with a more positive connotation, like “radical”—which would especially make sense for Spencer to use, given the hip and awesome skateboard leaning into Totally Radical Skater tropes—would make perfect sense. or even “sick” or “gnarly” which, like “nasty,” have negative connotations in their regular definitions but are also generally used by Radical Skaters and Hipsters in Media TM to convey positive sentiment.

one could argue that this unconventional use of “nasty” is just another one Spencer’s attempts to be unique and go against the mainstream via picking an uncommon word, but this just seems to put Cynthia and Pam down by portraying them and their interests as “nasty” to the New Kids. in pursuit of some vague idea of “coolness” Spencer has once again insulted other people—much like the majority of the episode, which is spent insulting the New Kids’ artistic ideas and interests (ie. telling them their yeti was out of style and lame; though this might’ve been an attempt to help, it is shown to have come off as hurtful)

following up with Spencer’s habit of putting these other people—one in particular—down to build oneself up, there’s also the phrasing of “my GIRL Cynthia.” given the slang terms of the era i feel we can reasonably assume that “girl” is used here to mean “girlfriend,” but frankly it just seems like such an odd way to say that. not “my girlfriend Cynthia,” not “my totally cool G-F Cynthia”, it’s “my GIRL Cynthia”.

like they’re not even friends (hence the lack of the “-friend” suffix), she’s just “girl”. Spencer doesn’t speak of her with any real care or poise while trying to bond with the New Kids. is she just another “cool thing” to be tacked on as part of this “cool” persona without any real thought, like the nonsensical philosophy of “thinking about doing something and actually doing it are kinda the same thing” that Spencer uses to attempt to seem wise?

does Spencer even like Cynthia? does Cynthia even like Spencer? one must wonder how their conversations go.

in conclusion: what do you mean NASTY, this is the ONE TIME YOU EVER MENTION HER, BE NICE

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
