Statement going forward: I will continue my tumblr policy of only posting/reblogging news about the current administration and all the bad things going on in the world if it is time-sensitive information, debunking misinformation, or contains actionable ways to help. I will not reblog awful news just to goggle at the horror of it. I will not spread things I have not read or checked. Time-sensitive information, debunking misinformation, or actionable ways to help. And they will always be tagged with “US politics” or “current events”. That’s it.
#Using the tag#actionable ways to help#for that last one#Otherwise: get your news from the AP or NPR or something. Not tumblr

Rules: List 15 bands/artists and name just (1) song of theirs that you love.
tagged by @canonicallyanxious 3 whopping months ago... hi sarah ily! listening to your playlist as i'm writing this
picking my 15 favorite artists was too hard so instead i'm just listing artists i like whose music i've seen performed live (not necessarily by them), loosely ordered by how much i heart them. i picked either the song that got me into them or the one i think is My Actual Favorite. i can't contribute a spreadsheet but i'm adding my favorite lyric moment from each also
Mitski: Bag of Bones (And I hope you leave right before the sun comes up / So I can watch it alone)
Will Wood: ...well, better than the alternative (And when we find out what’s wrong with me / Could you tell me how, could you tell me how and if I’m still pretty?)
Lucy Dacus: Strange Torpedo (And I'm more surprised every time you're alive / When I check for your breath in the morning)
MIKA: Lola (People always make me crazy / Love me lots, don’t love me maybe / What’s the point of singing silly love songs?)
Lady Lamb: You Are the Apple (I still need your teeth 'round my organs / I still need your teeth 'round my organs)
Dave Malloy: Natalya from Preludes (Your dark unknowable depression / Your fantastic spiraling black void / Isn't it pathetic? / Isn't it a choice?)
Sufjan Stevens: Come On! Feel the Illinoise! (Part I: The World's Columbian Exposition / Part II: Carl Sandburg Visits Me in a Dream) (Even in his heart, the Devil has to know the water level / Are you writing from the heart? / Are you writing from the heart?)
Kishi Bashi: Bright Whites (Cufflinks and hands in wrong places and faces / And creepy little movies made me weep, made me weep, made me weep)
Samia: Charm You (Couldn't we believe it was the hand of God / Making water boogie to a Kesha song)
Daisy the Great: The Record Player Song (Sometimes, I think all I'm ever doing is / trying to convince myself I'm alive)
The Magnetic Fields: Andrew in Drag (A pity she does not exist, a shame he's not a fag / The only girl I ever loved was Andrew in drag)
Anais Mitchell: Of a Friday Night (I'll be a good time gambler / I'll be a restless wife / I'll be a midnight writer / Out in the quarter on a Friday night)
Orla Gartland: More Like You (I heard it from a woman on the internet / She told me to eat well and try to love myself)
Remi Wolf: Liz (Troubling, troubling, troubling calls / Catch me vaping orange juice outside of the mall)
The Happy Fits: So Alright, Cool, Whatever (I wanna be with you, I wanna be with you / I wanna be barely hanging on!)
too eepy to tag people, but if you're seeing this, have at it, and i will listen to at least the first five songs i prommy unless you don't want me to
#personal#bc i love to reminisce the way i found each of these artists was#1. mitski- tumblrina i was obsessed with / npr tiny desk#2. will wood- tumblr post that was like 'my gender is' and then lyrics from i/me/myself and dr. sunshine is dead#3. lucy dacus- same tumblrina as mitski#4. mika- i knew big girl you are beautiful from just dance but didn't listen to him until that tumblr post asking if kids these days know#about grace kelly#5. lady lamb- i wanna say sarah? did you have crane your neck on playlists?#6. dave malloy- typical path via great comet bc i was in a musicals phase. and probably also bc of philippa soo. bc of h*milton#7. sufjan- back when i watched vlogbrothers one of their fans lauren segura won a contest and she had a cover of for the widows in paradise#further bolstered by sarah and also how much tumblr loves predatory wasp of the palisades#8. kishi bashi- i followed kina grannis on youtube and she covered q&a and then his tiny desk was cool#9. samia- spotify discover weekly recced welcome to eden#10. daisy- spotify recced dips and then fi knew idkw also#11. magnetic fields- i followed orla gartland on youtube and she covered book of love#12. anais- of a friday night was a night vale weather#13. orla- i think she guested on a doddleoddle vid#14. remi- i wanna say spotify discover but it could've been fi#15. the happy fits- i wanna say spn amv from grey

mister rogers was asked early in his career why he didn’t make his show explicitly christian given his strong faith and he was VEHEMENT that mister roger’s neighborhood never be christian or appear to be because it was vitally important that every child watching would feel accepted and understood by the show, regardless of who they were
and yeah that makes me sob every time i think of it
#i heard him say this in an interview they played on NPR as a part of coverage after his death#i was driving back to massachusetts over the summer i lived on campus#i didn’t have a cell phone that whole year bc i had lost it in september and my dad was so pissed he refused to get me another one#i think he finally caved bc i was driving 3.5 hours back and forth a bunch that summer bc all my friends left on the weekends#and campus was DESOLATE and really lonely on the weekends#and i got stuck at a toll without enough cash at one point (i finally found a nickel somewhere)#and the car i had at the time was NOT reliable and p much a POS#so he relented and got me another one#but for some reason they gave me a north shore area code? an area i have literally never lived in??#i had that area code until i eventually got an iphone in 2011? i think and left their plan and got a ny number#my old roommate actually got a fucking 212 CELL PHONE number somehow#in like 2006 when we moved to the city#we were all like ‘wtf?!? how??’ and he was like i have no idea the guy just laughed and gave me the number!#anyway what were we talking about

have to say the worst part about me getting into jet lag is that i’m genuinely considering getting a nebula subscription and it’s not even for like. a normal reason.
#RPF would be a normal reason imo. anyone who has it for RPF is sooo valid that’s not what i’m implying here#like. they have fun bonus episode content! the other creators look cool! supporting independent-ish artists in artistic endeavors directly!#all normal valid reasons to get nebula. is that what is making me consider a subscription um no not really#…i just need a new running podcast 🫡#local fool falls for youtube ad reads.#was absolutely not interested until the ad reads for these past two?? seasons started talking about a podcast. audibly went ‘oh no’#is it SILLY to buy a whole subscription just for one (1) podcast yes. however.#they’re the right length they seem like they have enough whimsy and that je ne c’est quoi that would be enjoyable and i have been through#all of YCDT and the broadscast and TPP and TMA and almost all of elite sens like i have needed a new podcast for so long 😭 & i’m so pickyyy#speaking of picky though would love to know if sam is a music or audiobook or podcast or nothing listener when he runs.#fundamental characterization imo. i would’ve bet podcast and like npr-nonfiction podcast until the lizzo comment that i still have no idea#whether or not it’s real but very intriguing to me because i am nosy as hell. no noise is insane to me but also i could see it for him

Listening to the actual news every morning really inures you to the ‘why isn’t anyone talking about this’ online discount because what do you mean no one’s talking about Syria/the UHC shooting/the drones in NJ those have been the top stories all week.
The only downside is I used to hate when my mom had NPR on in the car and now I’ve 100% become that person, this is like the HGTV/cooking network revelation all over again, I totally get it, I too would sit for an extra couple minutes outside the grocery store until I finished listening to that segment about the origins of the word ‘pecan’.
#look you hit 30 and you realize that home decor videos are fun and an NPR tote spawns in your house#I don’t make the rules#this has been going on for a while tho#when I was living with my parents they watched the evening news every night#and I’d come on here to people being like NO ONE is talking about the OH train derailment#and it had been the top story for the whole week

Back in November, NPR put out a 3-part podcast as part of their embedded series called All The Only Ones that looked at the history of trans youth in America over the past hundred years and connect it back to stories of trans teens today to show not only the depth of experience but also how it's not new or "just a trend," and it is SPECTACULAR. It's genuinely really well put together and handled amazingly. Seriously if you can, go listen to it

i feel like i haven’t seen anyone talking about it aside from a couple of news outlets but icymi: usps is shipping free at home covid tests again. you can get four test mailed to your household for FREE. order them here and don’t be caught without a test when you need one
additionally, the expiration date for some at home covid tests has been extended since some manufacturers have proven that their tests are accurate for longer than was known when the test was originally manufactured. you can see if your at home test has an extended expiration date at the previous link.
#would appreciate if people helped circulate this :)#just wanna help people out because i know getting caught without a test or being caught with an expired test kit when you need one is#stressful and also the tests you can buy at pharmacies tend to not be cheap lol#ordered my tests a few weeks back and they took about a week to get to me btwwwwwww#but was just talking about this with my mom and i was like huh i’ve heard like no one other than me talk about this#and i just know about it because i saw it on like npr or some shit lol

tl;dr - they're saying that PBS and NPR have real proper commercials so that they can stop providing any funding for any public broadcasting service. They are explicit that that is the end goal and that the commercial thing is their potential way to make that happen.
#politics#public broadcasting#npr#pbs#I can only assume that this is specifically as part of a push to control all media outlets#and eliminate the ones they can't control

When I got annoyed enough to pay for Fable and Folly Plus (turns out I was already following like 80% of their current shows that aren't Actual Play so it's a good deal) that came with Midnight Burger advance episodes.
I think most shows that do advance access are either a day ahead, a week ahead, or "you get it as soon as it's done" ahead. MB does a month in advance. I thought I would hold on to them and listen as the regular feed would get them, and that lasted about a week and a half.
But it's kind of awkward trying to lurk and maybe participate in the tag here when I'm an episode ahead of most people.
#midnight burger#if bundled NPR Plus had done the full rollout two months earlier they might have gotten my money#but I listen to fewer of their shows and the ads aren't as bad#anyway the last straw for paying was that I missed downloading one episode of the Amelia Project Christmas miniseries#i knew they were going to take it down before i got there in the archive but I thought I'd downloaded them all only to realize I'd missed 1
