Knotting the Banner by David J. Mozina
Academic research unfolding within a living biographical narrative.
This impressive book combines the virtues of ethno-cultural and religious study and adventure novel. In the context of everyday Hunan, the reader discovers a world permeated with cosmogonic meanings: it’s like a Rabbit Hole into Taoist thinking. A complicated mystic quest takes place right in the rural daily routine.
David J. Mozina explores the topic of Banner Rites focused on worship of the Lord Yin Jiao (殷郊 aka 殷交), the principal of the sixty Tai Sui (太歲). The fierce celestial Tai Sui is a much revered guardian deity in Taoist exorcism.
An essential book for the connoisseurs of authentic experiences.

Tai Chi, Zhang Songxi, Wudang and Fact Checking
Not so long ago, we’ve already examined the Wudang sword lineage, and it has raised reasonable doubts about the accuracy. And what about the traditional Tai Chi narrative?

What the Dantian/Tanden/Center Actually Means
[A Hopefully Short Thumbnail Sketch]
Thousands of years ago, India and China, the two longest-extant agrarian cultures in the world, discovered some supplements to movement that were undoubtedly energy-saving, particularly for doing long hours of repetitive farming work. The Indus Valley Civilization in India was, as far as we can currently determine, quite a bit older than Chinese civilization, so it’s a reasonable assumption that India developed their theory of movement around “prana” earlier than the Chinese development of the same body properties called “qi”. Regardless, the salient point is that “prana” and “qi”, the focus of discussions about the dantian/tanden/center, are based on real and practical considerations about body mechanics.
Many current discussions about qi/prana/ki focus on the underlying ancient theories about how qi/ki/prana worked, but if we circumvent discussions involving exotic energies, etc., we find that qi/ki/prana is strongly based on reality and practicality. The two basic benefits of qi/ki/prana are that it (1.) provides strength that doesn’t rely on muscles and (2.) manipulates force directions “mentally” (as in “Mind-Body”) so that you can focus your forces where you want them and you can “ground” yourself against pushes.
The powers of strength are from the (dermal) qi/ki itself and the powers of force direction (jin/kokyu/aiki/shakti) are subsidiary abilities of the qi/ki itself. So, in actuality, we’re talking about the dermal qi/ki for supplemental power and a byproduct of qi/ki is the force-direction powers. Another perspective might be that you have qi/ki over the surface of the body and one of the powers of the qi/ki is the ability to manipulate forces either from the solidity of the ground or from the weight of the body pulling downward (both are forces of gravity).
The ki/qi can be manipulated as an elastic connection (sort of like a dancer’s leotard) all over the body, by moving the body and by pulling on the ki/qi connection with the dantian/tanden. Moving the body’s ki/qi with the dantian/tanden is where we derive our talks about “center”, “using the dantian”, and so on.
The essential idea of moving the body with qi/ki and the dantian, while simultaneously using jin/kokyu forces is to use the power of the ground and gravity and the strength from the lower body’s powerful muscles, then to transfer that power using jin/kokyu and the pulling connection of the ki/qi to the arms. In other words, the upper body is totally relaxed while we supply it with power from the lower-body and ground. That dantian/tanden is the controlling nexus of pulls of the qi/ki to the limbs and the controlling nexus of the skeletal structure. All of the so-called “internal martial arts” (the “neijia” arts, in Chinese) have the body controlled by the dantian/tanden.
A person with proper traditional skills of qi/ki and jin/kokyu will have a powerfully developed dantian/tanden. Many of the old pictures of gods, kami, warriors, etc., will show them with a powerfully developed dantian/tanden.
Manipulating force directions mentally is fairly easy to learn. Conditioning and training the body movements with the qi/ki takes much longer to do. Many traditional Asian arts have developed their own approaches to qi/ki development and the jealously guard those training techniques. The power of our jin/kokyu forces increases with proper qi/ki training and supplemental mental practice, so the optimal approach is one that produces strong qi/ki controlled by the tanden, in addition to strong jin/kokyu forces.
It’s worth noting that developing your qi/ki and also your jin/kokyu are essentially skills that increase your strength and power. They are called “internal strength”. Would those skills make your practice of martial arts invincible? No. There is an old saying to the effect that “martial arts without internal strength is not correct; internal strength without proper martial training is not correct, either”.

tag game - five things that make you happy!
rules: list five things that make you happy and tag the last ten people in your notes!
tagged by the most lovely peeps @romirola @floofdeloop @sincerelywhistler!!! thank you! ;u; <3
1. Sunday brunch at my favourite local cafe with my favourite people. did I just come back from brunch there with my sister? YES. it's a tradition to always take people to this little italian place around the corner, which sits opposite a church, and it's my favourite way to spend a sunny sunday. ( @frenchiefitzhere and @teafairywithabook can attest to this, also, YOU'RE TAGGED)
2. BOOKS. do I deal with stress through rampant escapism? perhaps. but I love reading. always have. i've been on a reading kick these last three months, and my heart has been stolen by TJ Klune's Green Creek series (Wolfsong beloved). READ THE BOOKS!!
3. Writing!! specifically the freedom and flexibility that comes from writing and sharing online. no capitalistic pressure, no need for longer polished works, just pure creativity and inspiration and sharing my thoughts on my favourite characters with other fans. (have I started writing for green creek? HECK YES I HAVE)
4. werewolves. yep, they get a category of their own. something something loving the monstrous, found family, all the good stuff. werewoofs my beloved.
5. as i'm no longer in the lab 24/7, i've been catching theatre shows in the city, and it's been wonderful. the threate district is walking distance from my apartment, I can go during the week and get tickets for a great value hehehe, and as i'm already living in one of the most expensive cities in the world, it's good to take advantage of the benefits. the one i'm most excited for is a queer play that's coming to town as part of the fringe festival in August...
tagging- you, reading this!! also from my recent notifications: @first-flower-of-my-house @nagia-pronounced-neijia @dottiechan @protosstar @theodorebasmanov @fuckingarataswespeak @hypnostanatos and frenchie and cheri as tagged earlier >:3

RULES: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
Tagged by @peyurtle thank ye kindly. I benefit here from a habit for poetical naming, though I have to pull from several sources since my organization is as scattered as my muse's time-share schedule.
Black Wings in Twilight
Topsy Turvy, Purple and Red
Dancing on Cracking Glass
Not What We Seem
Waxing Moon
Summoned, Newmade
Dragon Below, Horizon Eyes
Semiautomagic
Lines in the Fog
The God Machine
Raythe Wormwood
Unity
Xenophon's Song
My Beloved Desert
A Touch of the Beyond
We're Monsters, Not Monstrous
The Monarchs
Keystone Research
Wolf
Raindrop on a Bending Leaf
Glass Masks
System Ghost
My Roommate, the Unspeakable Horror
Who Cares if I was Raised by a Wolf
Overthrow the Reign of Madness
Never Dead Which Eternal Burns
Stitching Together Fates and Shadows
And these ones don't exactly have WIPs, but they're rattling about in my head no less
The End of Wars
Thumb Bone Doorways
A Second Chance at Happiness
I'm A Magic Man
Okay, you made me trawl through my WIP folder and dig up stories long forgotten, fair enough. No, they aren't in much of any order, so the developed ones I'm actually working on are scattered in amongst the old snippets.
I'm pretty sure I don't know enough other writers, nor writer-adjacent folk, let alone as mutuals, but I'll try:
@asexualmonsterfucker Dearest friend, woe be upon thee
@humormehorny I think you're writer-adjacent???
@ernmark I think that's your writer aspect?
@yourozness you're in fandom, close enough
@lynnestra44 Finally, an unambiguous person I sort of know who writes things!
@mageofeternity I think I know who you are under there
@wizardlyghost wait, no, you're, but, who? I? Wha?
@nagia-pronounced-neijia HOW DID I NOT KNOW BEFORE NOW YOU'RE A FANDOM WRITER?
@cinturon-cadena
@thebutterflyoficeandwisteria
@esgiel if you're who I think you are... and if not oh well
@iron-mage
@imsorrywhatsalifeagain I think you do stuff???
@stormfalcon2018 cheap shot, ayyyy!
@hihogandalfaway
@ageblue You're in my notes and therefore my field of fire, have fun!
@kingofthesafetypins do you do things? I don't remember
Okay I'm running out of time this will have to do okay I love you byebye!

Internet's down at work AGAIN so I'm making the best possible use of my time by posting this first sentence ask game! Many thanks to the lovely @athelise for the tag--go check out her work!
Also, girl, I am an shamelessly including WIPs and am humbling requesting you do one with your WIPs, I wanna see! 👀
Here we go, limited to Nardo fandom and in reverse chronological order:
"How do I keep letting you talk me into these things, Ino?" Sakura moaned, struggling to wriggle into an almost too-tight little black dress. (Untitled, MadaSaku longfic WIP, unposted)
The minute hand of the clock on the wall seemed to melt, bleeding into the space where the number six should have been. (Next of Kin, ItaSaku longfic)
"Ino, stop pulling," Sakura groaned, wrenching her wrist from the other girl's grip. (Like Pears in Summer, ItaSaku one shot)
"This is unnatural," Sakura announced with all the certainty of a doctor proclaiming a diagnosis—and none of the professional detachment. (Maniac, KakaSaku one shot)
The cemetery is strikingly beautiful. (Liminality, ItaSaku one shot + unpublished WIP sequel)
The first time Kakashi ever saw Sakura naked she was covered in blood. (Under the Sun, KakaSaku one shot)
"A toast to the Hokage!" (Spaces Between Stars, ItaSaku & KakaSaku longfic, unfinished)
Tick, tock. Tick, tock. (Clockwork, KakaSaku one shot)
"So? Any plans to celebrate the anniversary of Sasuke's triumphant return to the village?" Ino asked, snatching the last dumpling from the plate before Sakura's chopsticks had a chance. (Even a Blind Pig, KakSaku one shot)
It started with a cigarette, and he watched her childhood evaporate like smoke. (Slow Burn, AsuIno one shot)
Read 'em here
Evidently, I enjoy clock-related symbolism and Ino being pushy. This probably sums up everything you need to know about me up as a person ^^;
Tagging @nightowl27-writer @fm-white @tsume-inuzuka @lilyoftheshadow @nagia-pronounced-neijia and anyone else who wants to play! Any fandom, any pairing, original work, whatever, hit me with it :D

Since Fa Jin is now a quirk, do you think there could be other Quirks based off related concepts? Like Neijia and/or Neijing in general?
So for anyone that isn't aware, Neijia is the term for the schools and styles that practice of Neijing. Neijing is more mental or spiritual side of martial arts like breathing techniques, spiritual awareness, and Ki usage. With that in mind, I've done similar ideas to this with "Repose" and "Deep Breath", but I wanted to do something that fits more with the ideas of these styles, especially in contrast to "Fa Jin".
I see it working as an Emitter type Quirk that activates whenever the user is breathing. In doing so, the user becomes more attuned to the air in and around them, gaining a greater understanding of their own body and their surroundings. This grants the user immense awareness, reaction time, and maneuverability, making them capable of catching and redirecting various attacks without any harm to themselves, such as catching and throwing a bullet sent their way. This applies to their area and people with a short range around the user, capable of finding things out by changes in air in people's bodies or their environment. This gives the user a good mix of defensive options, working to avoid and redirect any trouble that comes their way. They can redirect attacks back at foes, detect hidden items or traps, help them maneuver around terrain, check up on people's injuries, or simply use it to help them relax. Though the Quirk is reliant on the user's ability to breath, so excessive strain on the body or damage to the lungs and throat can hamper the power. This is a highly passive and defensive ability, making it difficult to be proactive or mobile with it, and the user can still be harmed, such as by large-scale attacks. A possible name for the Quirk could be "Neijing".

🍓🍄📚🧩?
🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction?  So in like 7th grade my English class had a year long assignment to have a notebook and each quarter of the year we got graded on how much we wrote with it being totally open to what we could write. So I wrote a bunch of fledgling original fiction and uh.... a ton of rare-pair naruto fanfiction that for the most part never saw the light of day. It was probably the best school assignment i ever got in my life, and kicked off my fan fic writing career. 🍄 ⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings This one is hard cause I've got lots of character headcanons for most fandoms I'm in but.... uhhhhh. Pairing headcanons are a lot harder since a) half of the stuff I ship is not canon and b) I'm a sucker for AUs and love to tilt canon on its side to see what happens so that inherently already changed the lens to mostly being headcanon.
uhhhhhhhh. Fuck it, Yuffie Kisaragi/Shalua Rui of FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (Yes the PS2 game) infamy are a top-tier pairing that makes so much sense and if you want to cry over some of the best FFVII writing I've ever read you should read everything @nagia-pronounced-neijia has ever written for them as found here: https://archiveofourown.org/tags/Yuffie%20KisaragisShalua%20Rui/works
📚 ⇢ what's the last thing you wrote down in your notes app? A poetry scrap! I write a ton of poetry scraps in my notes and hope they one day will make it into a full piece. Frankenstein Palimpsest: what difference is there between monster and monument? Time The answer is time. 🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?
Block wall of text. I can't do it, lmao, I'm not strong enough. Otherwise it's a lot of little stuff like first person perspective or characters being filed down to very simplified "cardboard cut-out" versions of themselves. Special mention is the fics that spam tags, I hate those things so so much. I tend to undertag if anything, and fics that tag every single possible tag or unrelated tags garner my undying fury. Thanks for the ask!!!

Laozi on Martiality: Warfare and Arms Use
Civility and martiality from the Taoist point of view are only in an imaginary confrontation. Taoism denies both, since both represent a deviation from primordial naturalness. However, a close examination of scholar sources shows that despite the condemnation of war in the writings of Laozi, classical philosophy considers it justified to resort to weapons if one is guided by…

Nine people you’d like to get to know better
Tagged by the lovely @ranilla-bean 💕💕
Three ships: Just three why you making me choose between my children like that ugh -> Zukka, Hualian, Beefleaf
First ever ship: I have very clear memories of being obsessed with Jaden and Chazz’ gay ass dynamic in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX as a child but in terms of first fandom related ship I was a Destiel blogger for like 5 years
Last song: Who We Are by Hozier because I have he’s apparently all I listen to according to Spotify wrapped.
Last Film: Last Christmas <- soppy Christmas movies will always be peak genre to me especially when they are musicals
Currently Reading: took a little break from MXTX SVSS because I hit a reading slump but I’ll probably finish that then either read Gideon the Ninth or She Who Became The Sun cause a lot of the people I follow are reccing it on their blogs and they look neat.
Currently Watching: Just finished The Fall of House Usher yesterday and I can’t recommend it enough but that’s because I’m a huge Mike Flannigan fan.
Currently consuming: Diet Coke
Currently craving: something minty even though it is -2 degrees celsius so I’d probably regret it.
I can’t think of nine people of the top of my head but tagging beloved mutuals: @transboyzuko @xieliansbignaturals @lesmiserablol @prideofyunmeng @nagia-pronounced-neijia

Tagged by @nostalgicatsea (forever ago but I'm only getting to my tags now). Thank you!
Rules: list the first line(s) of your last 10 (or however many you have) posted fics and see if there’s a pattern!
speak easy, swing hard
When the shots rang out in the Arc, the band didn’t stop playing. It was twelve minutes into the new year at a Stark speakeasy and the joint was jumping, the floor crammed with gin baby socialites essaying the Charleston, mobsters clustered around tables, petty thieves circling and dipping into the pockets of the unwary; when the bullets started flying the crowd screamed and sought to scatter but the bandleader barely blinked, just led his crew full tilt into another chorus of ‘I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate’ while the singer, a svelte Sokovian songbird in a shimmering scarlet number, sidestepped a bullet that buried itself in a piano leg and kept right on crooning, All the boys in the neighbourhood know she can shimmy and it’s understood, while all hell broke loose on the dance floor.
well-versed in etiquette, extraordinarily nice
“You must know, Mr Crowley, that this is to be my last job,” said Jane.

Just a whole lot of aiming, he’d told Cornelia once. But it’s Martha Myers who misses.

“He don’t look like much,” said the client. “You sure he’s the chap we’re after?”
a song that will keep sky open in my mind
We knew Eli was back because of the baby. We could hear it crying clean across the wheat fields.
can't start a fire without a spark
It was a whole thing when Eddie Munson and Chrissy Cunningham blew town together and ran off to start a rock band.
A Gentleman's Guide To Love And Piracy
Day seven of my return to the high seas, wrote Stede in his journal. Since Lucius was no longer around to take dictation, the journal existed only in his head. Morale is low, I will not lie.
Patterns - I'm a big fan of in media res (it worked for Homer and it works for me) and so I like to start in the middle of things. I'm also trained to write hooks for people with short attention spans, so my first lines tend to be crunchy. The one exception is the first on the list, which is from speak easy, swing hard, the 1920s Prohibition-era Avengers AU I wrote for @nostalgicatsea as part of @marveltrumpshate. I wanted it to evoke the wild, chaotic tempo of a hot jazz number (something like the intro to this) so most of it is a pile-up of a long run-on sentence, and the writing continues in this fashion until Tony shows up to calm things down, whereupon the paragraphs go back to being a brief couple of lines each. I learnt this trick from seeing how translators handle action sequences in wuxia novels.
Tagging: @leupagus, @themardia, @auntieclimactic, @nagia-pronounced-neijia, @eisoj5, @swallowtailed, @justplainsalty, @bropunzeling, @st-clements-steps, @sagiow and anyone else who'd like to do this!

20 Questions for Fic Writers Game
tagged by the wonderful @autisticempathydaemon (chrissy my beloved <33 also you HAVE to let me know if you start writing for castleaudios >:3)
tagging - you, reading this!! also (no pressure!): @dominimoonbeam @glassbearclock @taelonsamada @romirola @lovelylonerliterature @genginger @ninzied @evilbunnyking @nerdierholler @commander-krios @chroniclesinlacuna @kesla @mordinette @garglyswoof @nagia-pronounced-neijia
1 - How many works do you have on AO3?
oh god, 128! but this is an underestimate, because i've anon'd some older fics/fandoms hehehe. i've been 'round ao3 since 2012!
2 - What's your total AO3 word count?
498,649... now this is actually accurate. 300k of that is from 2020 until now. basically the pandemic got me on a writing kick.
3 - What fandoms do you write for?
SO MANY. 19 according to ao3, but right now? baldurs gate & redacted audios >:3 there is another halsin fic in the works...
4 - What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
oh god. okay. you'll get some older fics here: 1. got me on my best (bad) behaviour 2. Call me scent o' mental, but I'm crazy about you (teen wolf....) 3. all bark, no bite 4. devils and ghosts (frank castle / karen page!! love this one heh) 5. sweeter than honey (ofc halsin makes it ahaha)
5 - Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
YES. there are only a few exceptions, when I've written something that touches close to home / a sensitive topic.
6 - What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
hmm...bittersweet endings were my wheelhouse for a long time. OKAY. let's do this one: too little, too late. caroline forbes and klaus mikaelson, set at the end of the originals. yeah.
7 -What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
....nowadays, I mostly write happier endings sadhfjk lets go with: bioluminescence, which follows on from the events of blood moon (@/barbwrites) and takes marco on a roadtrip to see luminescent algae up close and personal. (it's a loveletter to a summer I spent in california during a really difficult period of my life, and this fic means a lot to me <3)
8 - Do you get hate on fics?
I've not gotten hate, but I've definitely had some interesting comments over the years, for a variety of reasons, usually to do with the person's personal views. (one story had the main character smoking pot to calm their anxiety, and someone was not happy with that)
9 - Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
YEP. Smut with feelings is my FAVOURITE thing. I prefer sensual descriptions, because it is all about feelings and sensations with me. as an ace writer, I also like kink and monster fuckery heheheh.
10 - Do you write crossovers?
Not at all ahahahaha. Have I ever written a crossover? I don't think so. I love AUs though, and pacific rim AUs are one of my favourite concepts in fandom.
11 - Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yes, and it was teen wolf, and honestly not one of my best. it was a hatchet job, they took random paragraphs and spliced it / wrote around it? someone flagged it to me in a comment, and it was taken down. all in all, a very weird experience.
12 - Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, but gosh, that'd be cool! <- stealing from lexi, agreed, would be awesome <3
13 - Have you ever co-written a fic before?
YES. It was FUN. It was a series of conversations between an estranged father and son, Colm and Milo Greer, with the incredibly talented @frenchiefitzhere (also tagging you for this meme!!). it's still one of my favourite things: An Honest Man Like Yourself
14 - What's your all time favorite ship?
ALL TIME FAVOURITE? How dare you. I love all my ships afjkdsfg Shakarian is pretty high up there. Kastle (karen page/ frank castle). All the werewolves from redacted. <3
15 - What's a WIP that you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
ahhhh. okay. 'wander. wonder.' my poly longfic. don't hate me, but honestly, I've just not got the space for a longfic at the moment. never say never, but I've caught up with the chapters I had worked up, everything else is a vague outline. <3
16 - What are your writing strengths?
oof. I want to say character. most of the fun for me when writing is getting inside a characters head and figuring out their voice >:3
17 - What are your writing weaknesses?
Structuring longer, multi-chaptered stories - basically figuring out the pacing of it. I'm working on an original project, and I love it, but the first series of major edits will be breaking up my alternating POV sections into proper chapter breaks and letting myself linger more in moments instead of pushing forward (habits of a oneshot writer fdsds)
18 - Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I've been meaning to have my estonian friend critique my estonian, but I'm pretty positive the 'bond' I referred to is actually the money kind, and not the emotional attachment I'd been hoping to refer to hfjdkssfdg. I do as much research as I can, but it's best to run it past someone who speaks the language!
19 - First fandom you wrote for?
hehehehe naruto. yep. I was a naruto kid. first posted online in 2007......
20 - Favorite fic you've written?
WHAT A QUESTION. honestly, I love what I have been writing the last three years. I've really let myself just write what I want to read, and it's been great. i'm going to cheat, and say the original project I'm working on that I won't let anyone see heheheh. <3 it's got werewolves, kink and explicit consent, and spun out a whole verse for me to play with (and a fun MMF sidestory that I also need to finish...)
gods this got LONG. Thank you for making it this far!! <3
