“A blow with a word strikes deeper than a blow with a sword.”
Introduction
Katsumi Kenzaki is the third member of the Nerima Division rap battle group, Vivid Angels. She is known by her MC name, Espada. A fencing prodigy, she has won 6 gold medals at the Olympics so far. Katsumi is well known for her ferocity both in fencing and in the D.R.B acting like a lioness against her opponents.
Katsumi is a young woman in her early 20s and is of above-average height with a slender figure. She has ruby red eyes and straight golden blonde hair that reaches her mid-back with bangs framing her face.
She wears a simple black shirt with a red bomber jacket over it. Her lower half is covered with light yellow shorts and red converse. Her accessories include a black choker, several piercings on both ears, and a gold chain around her waist with a dove holding it in place.

Hypnosis Microphone
Katsumi’s Microphone takes the form of a handheld mic with the base in the shape of a golden rapier hilt.
Her Speaker takes the shape of two golden lions in roman styled armor with fierce solid red eyes. In both of their mouths lies a circular speaker.
Her rap ability, Parry, allows Katsumi to throw an opponent's attack back at them.
Personality
Despite what her status as a famous Olympian might say, Katsumi is cheery and energetic, often being seen acting lazy, childish, and immature. A fact that causes her to argue with Mitsuru to no end. Katsumi moves primarily at her own pace and is known for being friendly and playful especially with those she considers close. However, when Katsumi steps on the field either to fence or to rap her personality changes. She turns serious, often attacking her opponent with such ferocity acting like a lioness hunting her prey.
Background
In a separate post coming soon.
Trivia
Katsumi is fluent in Japanese, English, French, and Sign Language.
Her sign name from Aira is the letter K and the sign for sword.
While most fencers specialize in one style of fencing, Katsumi specializes in both Sabre and Épée.
Katsumi often carries snacks around in her jacket.
She has a huge fear of ghosts.

2021's A Year of Anime
Part 4
Barefoot Gen
This movie was brutal in depicting the bombing of Hiroshima and the aftermath of the disaster. It was based on the manga and the experiences were based on the author’s, Keiji Nakzawa, life as he lived in Hiroshima. I know the animation isn’t as unique, but for the 80s they managed to show some graphic and haunting imagery. It does have a little hope towards the end, but it doesn’t change the fact that the effects of Hiroshima was serious.
Redline
Yo! This movie was freaking dope as hell! The animation was incredible and went full-drive to go extreme. I think the story is average, and the dub cast did a good job. All you need to know is that watching Redline is an absolute ride that everyone needs to get on.
Kyousougiga
I watched this show because of the director, Rie Matsumoto, who directed the first season of Blood Blockade Battlefront. The animation is super creative and wild with its style & colors. I like the story, sub cast, and music. It’s a short anime, so you can finish it in a day. It’s really good!
Colorful
Life is hard and surviving an attempt changes your perspective of one’s life. This movie has decent animation and a good sub cast. However, the movie depicts suicide in a way I didn’t think any anime would ever do. It’s not perfect, but I admire how real and isolating it can be. It’s a solid movie that you should see.
Napping Princess
This movie has a larger than life concept of a girl who dreams of an alternate universe that parallels to her own life. It is animated nicely with a good music score. I think the story could have been done better, but the visuals sold me.
Kimi ni Todoke
I adore the show for its animation and showing a pure, loving couple who admire each other for their personalities. I admit some storylines could have been shorten, so we could have seen more of Sawako and Shota’s relationship bloom. The sub cast were good, the music is wonderful, and the heart of the show really makes the show special. I wish we could have another season, but I’m still glad the show made it official that Sawako and Shota are a couple.
Nermia Daikon Brothers
I see why this show is one of a kind because there’s not a lot of musical comedy anime out there. It is wacky and entertaining to watch. It does some problems and crude humor, and the sub & dub cast were good. It’s wild, but at least the songs are memorable.

My takeaway from the first three episodes of “Given”:
- Who hates themselves so much that they’d play an instrument that requires tuning of six strings every time they play it
- j/k, we all know that Guitars Are Cool, but what is a bigger social suicide than to carry a guitar case around at school when you don’t know how to play it
- Particularly given that you wear a bloody cardigan (do they... actually get away with that in Japanese schools? I mean, it’s anime so probably but it keeps bothering me)
- The last music anime I watched was Sound! Euphonium, which is obviously about a vastly superior genre of music, and also about girls, and also gorgeous, but also kind of eventually so boring that I never got into the second season. Given is surprisingly preoccupied with music, but it’s already looking to be amping up the drama, so I hope the non-kyoani visuals will be substituted with an interesting story.
- But the best music anime will always be the one that wasn’t about the music at all

Every time someone says “Rey and Kylo Ren can’t get together because they might be cousins!” I immediately think of Ichirou from Nerima Daikon Brothers, and how many times he said in a deadpan voice some variation of: “Cousins can get married. It’s not illegal here.” to his brother Hideki whenever he lamented his “Forbidden Love” for his cousin Mako (who also happened to be in “Forbidden Love” with her cousin, Ichirou).
The point is every time someone says “Rey and Ren could be cousins!” comes up, I end up snickering and think of Nerima Daikon Brothers. Take from that what you will.
