My Chemical Romance bassist Mikey Way has a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Comic with "anime inspired" art and a villain that goes back to the original '90s toys
By George Marston published June 24, 2024
Mikey Way is turning the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' greatest love into their worst enemy

My Chemical Romance is one of the most popular bands of the last 20 years, and in the time since their last official release, several of the group's multi-talented members have branched into comic storytelling - including bassist Mikey Way, whose latest comic is a short in the upcoming anthology comic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black, White, and Green #2.
A veritable teen idol of his own thanks to My Chem's beloved presence in the punk and emo scene, Way is tapping into a deep-seated love of both the TMNT and their personal favorite food of pizza for a story that captures the youthful energy of the Turtles in a way that only someone who was there for their meteoric rise and pop culture presence could.

"I was a massive Turtles fan as a kid! Being born in the '80s, wave one of Turtlemania hit when I was about eight years old, so safe to say I was all in," Way tells Newsarama. "My older brother was into the black & white comics early, so I was at least aware of the Turtles prior to that big boom, but my fandom really came alive with the original cartoon series."
"Followed up by the Playmates toy line and then into the live action movie, it really checked every box imaginable for me," Way explains. "The characters and the world building had something for almost everyone. While I was initially into Michelangelo, (because of his name and the nunchucks) I grew into way more of a Raphael fan. He's got more layers as a character in my opinion."

Way's brother is, of course, Gerard Way, singer of My Chemical Romance and founder of the DC imprint Young Animal, which published Mikey Way's first comic, Collapser, which was co-written by Shaun Simon with art by Ilias Kyriazis. For TMNT: Black, White, and Green, Way collaborated with artist Nikola Čižmešija and colorist Lee Loughridge, whose art you can see in the newly revealed pages from the story seen here.
"I love Nikola’s style so much!," Way says. "He has this fantastic anime inspired quality to his work, and it lends itself perfectly to a Ninja Turtles story. I was floored by his pencils and he was a pleasure to work with."
As for the content of the story itself, it all comes down to something that many fans of the TMNT probably love as much as the Turtles do themselves: pizza. Way brings in a classic villain, Pizza Face, who first appeared in the original TMNT toy line in 1990 as a villainous pizza chef, before being revived in the 2012 animated series as a mutated pizza blob.
Tumblr media
"I wanted to do a story that was an ode to '80s horror, with a nod to Candy Man or the urban legend of Bloody Mary," Way says of why he chose Pizza Face.
"The character of Pizza Face fascinated me as a kid, because he looked like the mascot on most Pizza boxes mixed with a 'Freddy' or 'Jason'," Way continues. "That mythology I created in my head as a kid really stuck with me. When the opportunity arose to write a Ninja Turtle story, it was literally the first thing that popped out of my head."
And yes, Mikey Way does have a favorite pizza place:
"Star Tavern in Orange New Jersey. Hands down the greatest there is, in my opinion."
Tumblr media
Though Way's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Green story is only eight pages, Way does plan more comics to come very soon - though he's not quite ready to say exactly what just yet.
"I feel like I have more stories that I want to tell," he hints. "At the risk of sounding vague, I would say one can expect an announcement of some sort very soon."
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black, White, and Green #2 is on sale now.

What are your thoughts on the je'daii? Do they even work, like I find myself irritated by the concept because people often use them to validate/prove the notion that "balance = both sides of the Force"
If you stick to what George Lucas said, in Star Wars a person being "balanced" is someone who accepts their inner darkness and resists its pull nonetheless.
When fans mention the Je'daii, it's usually in the context of:
"The Jedi downgraded from the Je'daii, limited their studies of the Force, refusing to study the Dark Side was a mistake. It was an original sin that caused them to create an imbalance within them."
Which is weird, to me, because the whole point of the comic's narrative is that:
the Je’daii Order’s way was doomed to fail.
Tumblr media
Introduced in the Legends comic series Dawn of the Jedi (2012), the Je'daii are the predecessors of the Jedi. They are an order of Force users who studied and practiced both the Light Side and the Dark Side in hopes of finding Balance.
The reasoning is simple: everyone has a bit of good and bad in them, you learn to master the good and the bad sides inside of you, indulging them equally. But while this method seems sound on paper… it didn't work.
Consider that they’re already dabbling with the Dark Side...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... but hey, at least they’re aware of its dangers, they’re trying to be responsible about it.
Tumblr media
There's a support system where they all warn each other when they're about to cross a line. But even then, there's many who've fallen and been exiled to a moon, to be rehabilitated.
Suddenly, circumstances compel all of them to use the Forcesaber, a weapon that only activates when you draw on the Dark Side.
Tumblr media
And that does something to them. Over the course of a year, they all become increasingly aggressive.
Tumblr media
Soon, a faction breaks off because they no longer want to stop using the Forcesaber. They’re addicted to the Dark Side.
Tumblr media
A war ensues, at the end of which the Jedi Order is born, a group of Force users who:
acknowledge and accept their inner darkness,
while also striving to overcome it rather than give it power.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So that’s the moral of the whole Je’daii story.
Their idea of "Balance by wielding both" was actually so fragile and difficult to maintain that all it took was a little push for them to become vulnerable to the Dark Side's temptation.
Hell, even after the Jedi Order was established, one of its founders, Master Rajivari - who in Dawn of the Jedi (2012) is framed as a wise ex-general who, albeit strict, spends his days meditating and philosophizing - he goes to the Dark Side too!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because that's how the Dark Side works.
The Dark Side isn’t just "negative feelings" or a "bad guy superpower" that you can mix with a "good guy superpower" to unleash the ultimate 'Force blast'. This isn’t an anime.
The Dark Side is a drugs/smoking/drinking addiction.
It's selfish, temporary pleasure. The more you consume it...
Tumblr media
... the more you get addicted...
Tumblr media
... and the more it consumes you right back...
Tumblr media
... until nothing remains.
Tumblr media
Jon Ostrander, who wrote Dawn of the Jedi (2012), echoed this sentiment multiple times:
“As I see it, those working on the light side work with the Force, channeling it, open and sensitive to what it tells them. They serve it. Those on the dark side try to impose their will on the Force, to make it do their will, to make it serve them. The Je’daii believe in a balance between the light and the dark side and so attempt to use both. Problem is, a balance is hard to maintain and the dark side is so very seductive.” - John Ostrander, LA Times, 2012
“The Je'daii aren't light side or dark side, although they know and are aware of both. Instead they seek a balance in the Force between light and dark. Balance, however, is a difficult thing to maintain and there is always the danger of falling wholly to the dark side — and some Je'daii have done so.” - John Ostrander, Newsarama, 2012
And this is a recurring theme throughout all of Ostrander’s comics, by the way. Be it with the Je’daii, but also with Quinlan Vos or Cade Skywalker, the point remains the same:
"Yes, wielding the Dark Side gives you great power, and you get to show off some badass new tricks...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
… but it ultimately destroys you and everyone around you."
Remember: if it weren’t for Cade or Quin’s loved ones, neither of them would have come back from the Dark Side. They aren't badasses because they can use Force Lightning, they're badasses because they found the strength to give that up.
So if you genuinely think the Jedi "downgraded" by refusing to give the Dark Side more power than it already has on them... you're missing the point.
“It’s not about ripping things out of the sky using the Force or Force Lightning. A lot of people, they think “oh look how powerful Vader is, look how powerful the Emperor is, I want to play be the bad guy because I get these powers”. It’s an empty feeling, at the end of the day, after the moment. [...] The Dark Side is a spiral downward that you’re trapped in.” - Dave Filoni, “Force of Rebellion”, 2018
It was an upgrade.
Framing "balance" as "equal Dark and Light Side" is like consuming one (1) salad a day and one (1) whole bottle of vodka and calling that "balanced". No, buddy, that'll kill you. Because:
The vodka is better at being destructive than the salad is at making you healthy.
It's won't stay just one bottle per day. It'll eventually become two, three, etc.
Because as George Lucas stated time and again, resisting the Dark Side is a constant struggle.
Tumblr media
So that's my two cents.
You've probably already heard about the recent announcement of a Dawn of the Jedi feature film, a biblical epic that will be directed by James Mangold.
Tumblr media
And truth be told... it scares me SO much that we came THIS close to an Episode IX: Duel of the Fates that framed "balance" as - you guessed it - giving equal power to your light and darkness.
Tumblr media
Like, how did this ⬆️ get as far as it did? Did nobody think to sit Colin Trevorrow down and explain to him that he fundamentally misunderstands how the Force works?
So all I can do is cross my fingers and hope James Mangold has a better grasp of - if not the lore (I wouldn't be surprised if the words "Je'daii" or "Tython" aren't uttered once in the film) - at least the message.

They are the openers for most of tour, except the dates around WWWY - OCT - 18, 19 and 20 and will be joining the tour again on their Brooklyn date OCT 22. (WWWY with MCR will happen on 18 and 19)
There’s been plenty of hints that this has been going on, some venues released promo posters that featured their name and people who got tickets were informed during purchase for a lot of the venues. They heavily hinted at a tour during the Slam Dunk interviews and it’s nice to finally have it all confirmed.

Spoilers for comics in March 2023!
These are from the official solicits for that month, which you can see in full at Newsarama.
The only Rogue stuff that month is a Punchline variant cover with a hilariously desperate Len on it. He probably isn't in the issue, as the other covers are more Gotham-based and don't involve the LoD.
PUNCHLINE: THE GOTHAM GAME #6 Written by TINI HOWARD and BLAKE HOWARD Art and cover by GLEB MELNIKOV Variant cover by DERRICK CHEW Variant cover by SIMONE DI MEO 1:25 variant cover by RILEY ROSSMO $3.99 US | 32 pages | 6 of 6 | Variant $4.99 US (card stock) ON SALE 3/28/23 RETURN OF THE CLOWN PRINCE! At the moment Punchline needed him the least, The Joker has returned to interfere with her war to take over as Gotham City's queen of crime. In The Joker's damaged and defeated state, will he help his former partner, or will he burn her the way he's burned everyone else? The epic conclusion to the bestselling Punchline miniseries is here, and it will change the shape of Gotham's villain world forever!
The "One-Minute War" is still going that month, and it doesn't seem to have any evil speedsters (aside from a variant cover in February) but here are the solicits anyway.
THE FLASH #794 Written by JEREMY ADAMS Art by ROGER CRUZ and WELLINGTON DIAS Cover by TAURIN CLARKE Variant cover by MARCO D'ALFONSO Variant cover by GEORGE KAMBADAIS 1:25 variant cover by ELEONORA CARLINI 1:50 foil variant cover by TAURIN CLARKE Shazam! Fury of the Gods movie variant cover by JERRY ORDWAY and ALEX SINCLAIR $3.99 US | 32 pages | $4.99 US (card stock) ON SALE 3/7/23 The Fraction is moments away from victory, but they forgot about one thing…an almost-10-year-old with red hair and the power to turn things around. Finally, Irey West has found her new superhero name, and she intends to use it while saving the Flash Family from certain doom!
THE FLASH #795 Written by JEREMY ADAMS Art by ROGER CRUZ and WELLINGTON DIAS Cover by TAURIN CLARKE Variant cover by DAVID NAKAYAMA Variant cover by MARCO D'ALFONSO 1:25 variant cover by ELEONORA CARLINI 1:50 foil variant cover by TAURIN CLARKE $3.99 US | 32 pages | $4.99 US (card stock) ON SALE 3/21/23 The Flash Family retreats, mourning the loss of their family members, while Barry tries to find a way to stop the Fraction once and for all. Surprises abound as the past is revisited and we hurtle toward the end of the One-Minute War!
Barry's holding an engagement ring on the second cover, so it seems like something might happen to Iris :\

Oh hell no. I just read a newsarama article saying what the likely identity of Heartless is (set to be revealed in the Nightwing Annual) and if its true, I’m gonna flip my shit.
Or mostly just be really fucking annoyed.
Spoilers beneath the cut, still vague but just playing it safe.
Let’s just say if it is this person, their origin claims to trace back to the Graysons’ murder and says ‘they were a kid traumatized by witnessing it’ and its like holy fucking shit Taylor and DC, could you stop trying to make Dick’s parents’ murder everyone else’s origin story and also ‘a bigger deal’ to them than you EVER actually allow it to be to Dick himself??!?!

To New Beginnings...
Alright. I created a new tumblr to specifically continue talking about Cassandra Cain Daily on both Twitter and here. Originally, and ironically I never began that Twitter account, someone else did back in early 2019.
But.. halfway into that year they wanted to have someone co-run it. My name popped up, and after some persuasion from friends, I accepted this mantle. Cue a few months later the originator gave me full control over the handle.
I’m quite passionate in talking about the character. I don’t think of myself as “the #1 Cass fan”. I just think of myself as a fan of a comic book character that I quite like and could talk regularly about them.
My own history?
I’ve been on the internet since 2000. I’ve see linear threads across BtVS and the Bronze Alternative to posting forums on Isis Sphere to Newsarama to Superdickery to social media births i.e. Twitter and here.
I’ve always adapted my online craft.
I am a former writer for the Outhousers (2008-2018) and Comics Pit (2018-2021).
As for why I enjoy Cass so much? She’s a character that resonates much to me. I could go into full length again, but if you’ve seen my tweets. You know how much passionate I am for this character.
Anyway to new beginnings!

Newsarama (or gamesradar now) is my go to for solicits. They are prompt and readable there. But DC does put their order catalog up on their site as a pdf. You can also wait for the official previews book to come out and view it at a comic shop.
thanks!
