ROYAL WEDDING UPDATE: THE GROOM, WEDDING PARTY HAVE ARRIVED

Sir Gus, Anya's soon-to-be-husband, has arrived at the Abbey!

Looking dapper in his tux and wearing his new honour and badge, Gus entered the Abbey with his mother, breaking protocol. In previous royal weddings, the groom's family entered separately, and the groom typically walks down the aisle, with his best man walking beside him all the way down to the altar.

Gus, however, asked if he could walk with his mother down the aisle, instead. He escorted his mother to her seat, before taking his place at the altar.

A rather nervous -but smiling- Gus is seen standing at the altar, waiting for his bride. At one point, he was even spotted wiping sweat off his brows with a handkerchief.

Prince Alistair arrived with his younger brother, Prince Nicky. Shortly after, Princess Ingrid arrived in a state limousine along with the page boys and bridesmaids.

There was some degree of chaos with the little tots. Gus' little niece, Sibel, seemed a little surprised with the crowds and camera flashes and was intent on looking for her mum.

Meanwhile, little Adrian Chegeya appeared to demand upsies from his cousin, Lady Emma, who happens to be one of the bridesmaids. The adorable page boy had to settle for a quick hug - poor Lady Emma did her best to pick little Adrian up, though!

Thankfully, things were ironed out quite quickly and the kids took their position, ready for the bride's arrival.

Why Princess Anne will be the King’s bedrock of support

The royal world has changed once again – but the industrious Princess Royal will keep the show on the road

Over the years, she has tumbled down the line of succession to a lowly 17th place in the Windsor pecking order.

On paper, the Princess Royal may not be the most prominent royal, lagging well behind her nephew Prince Harry and her brother the Duke of York – even though they are no longer “working” royals.

But when it comes to putting in the hours on behalf of the family Firm, few could dispute Princess Anne’s status as one of the King’s most stalwart supporters.

As the 75-year-old monarch on Monday began what Buckingham Palace has described as a “schedule of regular treatments” following his cancer diagnosis, his 73-year-old sister was the first to ride to the royal rescue.

With typical gusto, the grandmother-of-five put her best foot forward to carry out an investiture at Windsor Castle at 11am on Tuesday, before turning her attention to three further royal engagements.

After handing out gongs to the likes of media doyenne Elisabeth Murdoch, conductor Ivor Bolton, tenor Nicky Spence and wheelchair rugby league player James Simpson, the Princess made her way up to the Midlands for yet more pressing of the flesh.

On Tuesday afternoon, she was due to visit Nottingham West Primary Care Network at Eastwood Primary Care Centre in her capacity as patron of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, as well as popping in on woolmaker GH Hurt and Son.

She then plans to travel the 128 miles back to London to present The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering at the Science Museum.

Although the jobs will have been in the royal diary for months, they reiterate the importance of the Princess’s role as the Royal family’s resident trooper.

Last year, she was once again crowned the hardest-working royal, clocking up an impressive 457 engagements, 32 more than the 425 carried out by the King.

Not that there is any sibling rivalry between the pair. Although they used to “fight like cats and dogs” when they were little, according to Ingrid Seward, the veteran royal author and commentator: “Charles and Anne’s relationship is very good now.

“They have a great mutual respect. Before the prospect of Charles marrying Camilla became a possibility, the late Queen always thought it would be Anne at Charles’s side, acting as a sort of incognito Queen. Elizabeth II always had that vision – that Anne would play a hugely significant supporting role.”

Her bond with the King was plain to see during their mother’s funeral, when the Princess was the only woman to join the solemn march behind the coffin for the procession to Westminster Abbey.

As her brother’s eyes threatened to overflow with tears, his characteristically calm and collected sister looked him straight in the eye with a silent show of support.

In her 2022 book The Palace Papers, the journalist Tina Brown even went so far as to suggest that “there are plenty in palace circles who believe she is the best king we will never have”.

Stalwart, straightforward and surprisingly down to earth (despite being an unapologetic stickler for royal protocol), the Princess’s popularity within the household and beyond has been built on her reputation for getting on with it with little fuss or fanfare.

As Valentine Low explained in his 2022 book, Courtiers: “That was Harry and Meghan’s downfall – there was too much ego. Anne has no ego. She recognises that this is the job, and you just get on with it.”

It is a testament to the Princess’s work ethic that Buckingham Palace has stressed that the King will not need to use counsellors of state – royals authorised to carry out the monarch’s official duties should they be incapacitated or overseas.

Historically, they are the sovereign’s spouse and the next four people in the line of succession who are over the age of 21. Until recently, the King’s were Queen Camilla, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew and Princess Beatrice.

Amid concern that Princes Harry and Andrew no longer undertake official royal duties and that the former does not even live in the country, a change was made to the Regency Act of 1937 to include the Princess along with her youngest brother, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Both will be expected to increase their workload in light of the King’s cancer diagnosis, which has forced him to cancel all forward-facing public engagements to minimise any health risks.

As heir to the throne, the Prince of Wales will also undertake royal engagements on behalf of his father along with the Queen.

Yet with the Princess of Wales also out of action until after Easter after undergoing abdominal surgery, the monarchy has never looked more “slimmed down”.

Naturally Anne was one of the first to identify the potential pitfalls of stripping back the number of “working” royals.

“Well, I think the ‘slimmed-down’ [monarchy] was said in a day when there were a few more people around to make that seem like a justifiable comment,” she said in an interview last year.

When it was put to her that the world changes, she added: “It changes a bit. I mean, it doesn’t sound like a good idea from where I’m standing, I have to say. I’m not quite sure what else, you know, we can do.”

The royal world has changed once again – and as ever, industrious Princess Anne is front and centre of efforts to keep the show on the road.

"Because it's a tradition, Neil," Nicky said, watching Andrew and wincing.

"A tradition for what, Nicky? I wasn't aware that there was a protocol for divorce ceremonies."

So I started writing a DC x The Old Guard crossover where Tim becomes a new immortal, but since it's unlikely that I'll continue writing it in the near future and I, personally, have learned my lesson with with posting WIPs on ao3 I'll share it here, so enjoy!

Tim wakes in the iraqi desert with blood in his mouth and bullets on his mind.

How-?

He was sure he'd die, close his eyes and never open them again. But here he is, awake, bloody and nowhere near a Lazarus pit.

What the fuck?

Okay, fine, he can work with this. He's not dead, cool. He's not injured, also cool but very confusing.

Had he died and pulled a Jason or had he unlocked some insane healing ability? Is he meta? He should look into his family history after he brings Bruce back.

And then there's the dream. Standing with three others, being gunned down by multiple assailants, getting up and proceeding to decimate the attackers. Dying and waking up fine. It must be connected, right?

Tim hears a gurgle somewhere. Right, not the time to ponder his maybe-mortality. He looks over and sees Pru holding her neck and laying on her side. He rips his cape as he walks over and bandages the wound best he can before hauling her to the Jeep and taking off. He'd have liked to take Z and Owens' bodies but that would have taken more time and Pru needs actual medical attention asap.

As he drives Tim thinks over the dream more. He doesn't think that was supposed to be him, even if it was in his perspective.

Do those people actually exist?

He didn't see much of their appearances due to the fighting. There's not much to start an investigation with, but when has the impossibility of a task ever deterred him.

For now Tim will attend Pru's wounds and finish the information pack on Bruce to be sent to the League.

He has just enough time to enact the automatic data transfer protocol when he notices someone else in the room. All data he's compiled during his search is sent disorganised. Good thing he finished the upload of the evidence in the cave before exiting it. It's not as neat as he'd like but the other heroes will just have to deal.

Tim doesn't acknowledge the presences, hoping that they hadn't noticed his typing, and starts properly dressing Pru's wounds. She'll probably be fine, though there is a risk of her losing her voice. He doesn't have the equipment to check.

As he finishes attending Pru, somebody else, much less stealthy, enters. She breaks off in the middle of a sentence as she registers the blood and Tim doesn't even have a second to think before the ninjas that were hiding detain both her and him.

He remembers her name as she shrieks at the people holding them, confused and terrified. Tam Fox, Lucius' younger daughter.

They say first impressions are the most important. This one should certainly be memorable.

They were brought to the Cradle, where Pru was taken to surgery, Tam to a glorified holding cell and Tim to Ra's al Ghul himself. The old man wants Tim's help for his spider infestation in exchange for his assistance in his search for Bruce.

Ra's doesn't know that Tim's mission is complete. Good, that gives him the advantage. He agrees to Ra's suggestion with some minor negotiations, partly because with that kind of access to the League's systems he has a chance of crippling their operations for at least a time but mostly because Ra's has Tam. Getting her out of this safe and sound takes priority. He'll also try to get Pru out of the League's grip and try to use the vast network and databases at his disposal to subtly research things that may be connected to his dream and his healing.

But for now it's time for pest control.

Nile shoots up from where she'd been dozing alongside the others.

"Was that-"

"Another one." Andy nods.

Nicky hands Joe his sketchbook. "What do you remember?"

"Desert. A cave."

"Armour." Joe mumbles. "Capes?"

"They were alone. A vigilante?"

Andy shakes her head. "Not alone, there were other bodies."

"But not dressed like that. Fighters, unlikely allies?"

"There was a vehicle." Nile remembers. "Iraqi license plate."

"What did the bodies look like? They might have been travelling together."

"A bald woman. She was still breathing."

Andy gets up. "We'll go to Baghdad. Ask around, find out where that cave is." She points to the sketchbook as Joe puts it away.

"It can't be too far from a settlement." Nicky zips up his bag. "Too much technical gear, too few supplies."

"And the Jeep was probably rented. Not scuffed enough for regular missions." Nile adds, swinging her bag over her shoulder.

Andy nods. They leave in the middle of the night and arrive on the arabian peninsula two mornings later and several dreams more knowledgeable. They'd changed course after the first night when the dreams showed the new immortal being taken to the Cradle.

Andy, Nicky and Joe had heard of the League of Assassins but always stayed far away. The knowledge of their existance is dangerous in regular humans hands but in he Demons Head's? That man had resources to keep them locked up for eternity at best. Humanity forgets but Ra's would rememeber. Another immortal learning of them would be a death sentence.

They need to get Tim as fast and as discreetly as possible. One of Ra's people noticing and they might as well open the doors with rocket launchers.

They'd finally learned his name during the second night. Tim Drake-Wayne, the third Robin, and now apparently Red Robin. People will notice him missing but considering his occupation his fellow heroes will not be surprised. Still, they have to make a plan that can fool the most cunning detectives and perceptive do-gooders in human history. They would not let go of one of their own easily.

As they travel the final stretch to the base where Tim is held they plan. It would be best to blend in, the League has operatives all over the world, they could lay a 'recently transferred here' angle if anyone starts questioning them.

Turns out they don't need to get past more than a few corridors. Tim is waiting for them along with the bald woman, Pru. He nods to her and she walks past them and closes the door, presumably guarding it.

"We don't have much time. I can only escape observation for so long."

Joe angles his head. "How did you know we were coming?" He's tense, they all are. The last time someone anticipated their movements didn't go well.

"The dreams. I'm assuming you have them too?" They nod. "Do you know more about this?"

Andy nods. "It happened to all of us, the dreams stop when we meet."

Tim observes them silently before he relaxes minutely, deceptively. "So, immortality huh?"

Nile blinks. "You're not surprised? Freaking out?"

He smiles. "I've seen weirder." He seems to think for a moment. "You came here to rescue me, so the secret doesn't get out?"

"Yes, but also because we stick together and you're one of us now." Joe grabs Nicky's hand discreetly. They've all slowly untensed, not completely but enough for now.

Tim humms. "I can't come with you yet. If I suddenly left Ra's would look for me."

"What if he finds out?" Nile challenges.

"Then he won't know anyone else is affected. But I won't let it get that far. I have plans to leave, I just need enough time to enact them in a way that makes him leave me alone."

"How can we help?"

A week later they, along with Tam and Pru, make their way to Gotham, ruins of the League of Assassins and the Council of Spiders in their wake.

They'd known Ra's would survive their assault on his empire. In fact, they'd counted on it. Tim had banked on Ra's trying to get him back for incapacitating his operations for the time being.

There was no way to take out all of the League's assets in one fell swoop. No, they had to cut off the beast's head.

So when Ra's came after Tim and his family he didn't account for Tim's new friends. He let Ra's corner him in WE, he angered him so he would engage in combat himself and he let himself be thrown out the window so that in the single moment of victory when Ra's guard is down, the others can ambush him and end his reign far from any opportunity to be healed.

As Tim dies once more so does the Demons Head. But unlike Tim he would not come back again.

(Unbeknownst to Tim, Kon has just freshly returned to his own time with Bart and is lounging in the room next to Dick and Damian, who are waitingfor the League to retrieve Batman. He isn't cleared to go out yet, medical checks needed to be done, but upon being informed that nobody has any idea where Tim is he sought out his friends heartbeat.

As Tim hits the pavement, for several horrifying minutes Kon listens to his heart stutter and give out before miraculously starting again, beating like nothing ever happened.

And as the Kryptonian struggles against the security measures keeping him and Bart in isolation, Dick and Damian remain oblivious, too focused on their father's emaciated form being hurried to the med bay.)

Coach took Neil at his word and ushered the Foxes down the hallway and out of the building. Neil ignored everyone’s continued questions in favor of continuing to bleed out of his face and freak the fuck out. 

What the hell could he even do? What could Renee do? Burn the place down? A bomb threat maybe, something to get everyone evacuated, but it wasn’t like Neil knew which doctor Riko had paid off. And there was no telling what protocols the place had for that sort of situation. Or what would happen to Andrew if the law decided he was breaking the terms of his parole. Everything could just get worse if Neil ran off half-cocked. 

Neil was in possession of a varied criminal career that covered a lot of areas, rehab centers and consequently breaking a guy out of a rehab center to protect him from evil rapist doctors were not covered in any of those aforementioned areas. 

If only he could still ask Mary for advice. As if she’d say any anything other than Abram what the fuck do you think you’re doing, you’re name is now Mitch Blanc and you’re moving to Siberia. Forget about the goalie. You suicidal wretch. 

Coach unlocked the bus and Neil pulled Renee away to the side to explain everything to just her. Except no one got on the bus and everyone just kept talking. 

“Neil, please let me look at your nose.”

“What did Riko say about my brother?”

“Those fucking Ravens.”

“What did Kevin mean by if?”

“Jesus Christ Neil could you explain just one thing for once.”

“I swear to god Kevin I don’t care if Andrew stabs me.”

“Let’s just beat the shit out of Riko, who even cares why.”

“Nathaniel--” Kevin was so quiet, no one but Neil even heard him. But Neil heard it like a gunshot.

“DON’T CALL ME THAT,” Neil slapped a hand against the side of the bus. Everyone shut up. Neil wrestled with his lungs. “I’m Neil,” he managed to get out. Neil turned to Kevin. Kevin was pale and terrified and Neil could not find an ounce of care for his feelings. Not on this. “I’m Neil,” he repeated. 

Kevin nodded. His right hand was wrapped around his left, both pulled close to his chest as if waiting for a rebreak. Already flinching from what he thought the son of the Butcher would do to him. And Neil found an ounce. 

Neil dragged in a full breath. “Kevin, I’m not going to hurt you.” 

“I know,” Kevin said, his voice still too quiet. “I’m sorry.” 

“What the hell did he even call you?” Seth asked. 

“Who cares about that,” Nicky yelled. “I couldn’t give less of a fuck whatever weird slur Kevin called Neil to make him snap! One of you two is telling me right now what Kevin meant by ‘if Andrew comes back,’ or I am hitting the both of you with Coach’s bus.” 

“No, you will not be doing that,” Coach said. “All of you get on the bus right now and Neil will explain on the way back to Palmetto. And I swear to God if you all keep squawking at each other you will all be running back.” 

Everyone got on the bus. 

Abby made Neil sit next to her so she could look at his nose. Everyone else dead silent as she set it and tapped it and then offered Neil pain meds that he immediately refused. Once she was done Wymack started the bus and pulled onto the road. 

“Okay, what happened?” Dan asked in her authoritative, do not disobey me captain’s voice. 

Even if he had to say this in front of everyone, Neil still stood up and looked directly at Renee. “Riko bought one of the doctors at Easthaven, we need to get Andrew out before he ends up dead.” 

Everyone lost their collective minds. A discordant chorus of “elaborate,” and “Coach turn this bus around right now.” And Neil struggled to ignore it. Especially as Aaron actively grabbed him by the suit collar, hissing and shaking like a feral cat. 

“I’ll call Betsy,” Renee said, already pulling out her phone. 

“Didn’t she sign over care or something,” Neil asked, leaning around Aaron to talk to her. Nicky had very loudly complained about that, that not even Dobson could get a message to Andrew. 

“She’s still the best place to start,” Renee got up and went to the back of the bus. 

“Aaron, you need to calm down,” Neil pulled Aaron’s hands off of him. 

“Are you seriously telling me to calm down right now?” 

“What part of shaking me do think will help Andrew?” 

“Well, clearly Kevin thought hitting you would fix something,” Allison so very helpfully said. 

“Riko said if Neil went to Evermore Andrew would be safe,” Kevin said, his voice flat with a bottle of vodka in his lap. 

“That’s bullshit and we all fucking know it. All Riko wants is to fucking kill one of us, drugging Seth, sending that moron after Renee, Drake ending up across the country to surprise Andrew. This is just another goddamned hairbrained scheme to put one of us in the ground. If Andrew hadn’t gone to rehab he would have just tried to blackmail me into spending my break getting poorly tortured to death in his goth fucking torture room. If we leave Andrew in Easthaven he will die. If I go to Evermore I will die and Riko can still do whatever the fuck he wants to Andrew. And you know as jazzed as I am at the prospect of not having to deal with any of this shit anymore. I refuse to have Riko fucking Moriyama be the one to actually kill me. So no, I am not going to Evermore Kevin, Riko is a lying manipulative piece of shit and nothing short of actually getting Andrew out of that place is going to make him safe.” 

“Neil, you need to breathe,” Abby said right behind him. 

And yeah, actually the world was kinda fading out at the edges. Neil sat down. Katelyn was suddenly right next to him, knelt on the floor of the bus, asking him those inane questions about what he could see and hear. Inane because they worked and he hated that. 

When Neil tuned back into the conversation Aaron was talking. “How the fuck do we get him out of there? You idiots barely got him in.” 

“Wouldn’t it be easier to figure out who Riko paid and report them,” Katelyn suggested, one hand still on Neil’s shoulder. “Or break their legs maybe? I don’t know, whatever it takes to stop them from hurting him. Getting the one without the court order out of the court ordered building sounds easier than getting Andrew out.” 

“Holy shit,” Allison awed. “And I was confused about what you were doing with a Minyard. Break some doctor’s legs, what are you a fucking New York City gangster? You gonna tell Riko to sleep with the fishes?” 

“Stop flirting,” Seth complained. 

“How do we even figure that out? Poll the employees, hi have you ever taken money from famed exy star Riko Moriyama,” Matt asked. 

“There has to be something about the doctor that made Riko offer, it’s not like he could have polled the employees to figure out which one would take the money.” Dan said. 

“Easthaven’s supposed to be a good facility, Betsy said it was good. A good place wouldn’t just hire someone with that kind of history.” Nicky said. “Right? She wouldn’t, she wouldn’t have put. She wouldn’t put Andrew in a place--” 

“Nicky, if I have to keep breathing so do you,” Neil said. He just wanted to hit something and have everything be fixed. He wanted a nap or to jump out of the moving bus. He wanted a gun. He was about to suggest the arson, evacuate, grab Andrew plan. Deal with the legal consequences whenever they happened. They didn’t have time to stalk all the employees, not thoroughly enough for whatever thread of depravity had managed to escape the center's background check but not Riko’s.   

“I got an anonymous threat,” Wymack started, loud and final. “From some rival team while we were at the banquet that said a doctor was going to hurt Andrew. With everything that’s happened in the last two years it’s enough to at least get him on the phone. If not get Andrew moved someplace else. Walker,” he called out louder, “give me the phone when you’re done. Betsy and I will get Andrew out of Easthaven and you will all curb your violent criminal thoughts.” 

“Can it be that simple?” Neil asked. “Will anyone take you seriously?” 

“I’ll make them,” Wymack promised. 

And that was good enough. 

If nothing else, Neil was willing to let Coach try first. There was always arson if he failed. 

Renee handed Wymack the phone and Wymack talked to Dobson. Dobson would drive out to Easthaven and Wymack would call ahead to whoever was in charge on his own phone. 

No one pretended to not eavesdrop as Wymack called up the rehab center and started talking about dangerous fans. About how the team had gotten Swatted last year. All of the dead animals and vandalism that came along with the attention of “Raven’s fans,” he spun a good yarn. Wymack did. It helped that all of that was mostly true, with the exception of a lot of it being perpetrated by the Raven’s themselves. 

The whole time he kept the bus at a steady calm pace. Ending with the explanation that Dr. Betsy Dobson needed to speak with the head of Easthaven and Andrew himself to ensure his safety in the face of these threats. 

Quietly, while Coach was still talking, Kevin moved to sit near Neil. He still had that bottle of vodka, unopened, white knuckled in his grip. 

“He wasn’t lying,” Kevin said in low French. 

“No,” Neil admitted in the same language. “He wasn’t.” 

“You’re gonna die,” Kevin said, knowing, solemn, without question. 

“Yeah, I am.” 

“You-- Fuck, Neil you’ve been saying that all year.” Kevin turned to Neil, “have you really been trying to get Andrew to kill you?” He asked. 

“Eh, I could’ve been trying harder.” 

“You’re gonna die,” he repeated, twisting his hands around the bottle. 

“Kevin, enough. I know, there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Trust me, if I could…” Neil trailed off, would he? Really? If he could stop this, magically end everyone who wanted him dead. Erase Nathanial Wesninski from existence, make Neil Josten real and separate and alive. If Neil could do any of that, would he? Or would he just make the end not hurt. It was going to hurt. It was going to hurt so bad, he knew that, he had the proof of concept carved into his skin before he could properly remember it. 

Neil looked at Kevin, “will you still teach me?” He asked. 

“Every night.” 

Neil debated the next question for half a moment before deciding maybe he needed an answer for this one thing. “What did he mean by owning me?” 

“You don’t know?” 

“Assume I’m an idiot.” 

“Shit,” Kevin was wide-eyed. “Uh, when your mother took you, that was your audition. You were supposed to be a Raven. The money you took was the family's money. Your father sold you and then you ran.” 

Well, all things considered his father literally selling him to a homicidal sports cult wasn’t exactly out of character for him. “I didn’t know, she never explained why we left. I never asked.” 

“Why did you think you were there? Why did you think they made us watch your father kill someone?”

“Little league practice,” Neil shrugged. “He made me watch him kill people all the time, it was only strange that you and the other were there.” They were both avoiding names, speaking in French only disguised the conversation so much. 

“If you failed the next day we would have watched him kill you.” Kevin said. 

“He would have killed me for Exy?” Sure, Neil’s father would have stabbed him because it was a little too sunny outside. But disposing of his only son wholesale just for being bad at sports seemed wasteful even for him. 

“You weren’t supposed to exist,” Kevin said. “None of the branches are supposed to have heirs, it would dilute the family’s power.” 

No. No, absolutely not. 

“He works for them?” 

“How stupid are you?” Kevin asked. 

“I was ten when I left, it’s not like anyone sat me down and explained the intricacies of it!” God fucking damn it, everything came back to the Moriyamas. 

“What the hell are you two even arguing about?” Aaron asked. “Kevin, we’ve all wanted to hit Neil but this is just not his fault.”

Neil lost it. He laughed so hard his eyes teared up. Maybe Riko Moriyama would kill him, all he had to do was put in a phone call to his estranged family about where Neil was and that would do it. “C’mon Aaron, give it your best shot. I know you’re still miffed about Halloween.” He said in English, already anticipating the easy no Aaron would give but wanting someone to put him out of his misery nonetheless. 

“You should run,” Kevin said in French. 

“I’m sick of it, Kevin, I’m sick of all of it. I’m here, it’s fine.” Neil told him in French. 

By the time they made it back to the dorms, the sun just peaking out over the skyline. Andrew had been moved to a new facility, strong armed by the combined powers of Wymack, Dobson, and a well documented history of Exy related harassment. The new place let Dobson see him and she reported that Andrew was tired, recovering from his meds, but otherwise unharmed. 

Neil watched Nicky and Aaron be shocked at the degree of relief on the other Foxes. Andrew was safe, they’d gotten him out in time. He’d be back in the new year threatening to stab people and being dramatic. 

But before then, the Monsters were going to New York and Neil needed to pack.

Follow Up pt 5

“He might have been more useful alive, Ms. Rosselini,” Angelina said, sounding disapproving of Diana's protests and indifferent of her discomfort. 

The woman clenched her fists, standing just out of reach of the grasping and vengeful spirit.  “The mission was compromised, Donna Angelina. Even using family resources to transport a near dead man from our basement would have drawn more attention that was necessary thanks to the problems his little princess had already created for us.  Nicky would have done the same in disposing of our unexpected guest.”

Nicky, Angelina thought, would have put a bullet into the man as a safeguard from sudden recovery or rescue.  Nicky would have then proceeded to put a bullet in everyone in the building and she was certain Diana Rossellini knew that, giving Diana’s final call on the matter a tinge of self preservation rather than protocol.  However, having chastised the Proxy sufficiently, she reeled in the wrathful wraith, giving her sullen cousin space to breath and be thankful for her life.

“Simon Boucher,” Angelina said, focusing on the spirit.  Its attention now turned to her, it shrank back into human proportions, once again clear and calm and sad.  “We regret that you have come to this state.”

“You are like her,” he whispered again. 

“I am,” Angelina agreed.  “Did you see the ones that attacked you.”

“No.  I didn’t.”  A ghostly hand went to the pockets of his clothing. Searching.  “They took the rosary from me.  They knew we were coming, even though Elizabeth said it was safe.  Is she safe?  Did they kill her too?  I can’t find her.”

“She’s safe with her brother, Mr. Boucher.  She left France unharmed.  What can be done for you?”

The resigned spirit of Simon looked at his bones under Anglina’s gentle hands.  “Tell my family.  Don’t let them wonder what happened.”

“I can do that for you, Mr. Boucher.”  Angelina glanced meaningfully at Diana and tipped her head to the door, indicating that the Proxy needed to find the absent medical examiner in order to prepare the bones for travel.  Diana, sullen to be dismissed, wisely left without a word.  The wraith of Simon didn’t notice the accessory to his murder leaving, starting transfixed at his own body.

“Is this what happens when you betray someone?  Am I in hell?”

The notion amused Angelina.  “You aren’t in hell, Mr. Boucher.  Whom did you betray?”  The spirit flickered for a moment, the way a warning ripple might go through a swarm of bees.

“He paid me to bring him the rosary.  Elizabeth said he was going to kill me if I did.  But then I died anyway.”  Angelina could feel the sadness in the bones. “Did Elizabeth have me killed?  For the rosary?”

A child, even one in the shadow of  Nicky’s influence, could not possibly have orchestrated such a thing and she said so.  “This might have been simple accident of chance, Mr. Boucher.  Whom did you betray?”  She leaned into the question, urging the wraith to answer truthfully.

Again that ripple as the words were bent unwillingly from the wraith.  “Vincenzo Giovanni.  He paid...my…our Order…to find things for him.”

Angelina shared a quick look with Pietro, her cousin and enforcer becoming grim to hear the news.  “Does Vincenzo live here in Grenoble?”  While a common enough family name, there were only so many that had gotten the Kiss and she could account for each one of those and the territory they were allowed to operate.

“America.  The rosary is gone.  How do I make amends so I can go to Heaven?”  Simon’s voice was beginning to go hollow, an abyssal wail.

“I will help you, Mr. Boucher, but you will have to wait.  We’ll move you out of this place to one of sanctuary.  You will be safe and soon on your path to redemption.”  Angelina poured all of her sincerity into the words, lifting her hands off the bones and letting the mournful spirit of Simon Boucher fade back across the Shroud.

She stood there quietly for a moment, Pietro coming alongside.  “If it is the same Vincenzo that tried to gull the Butcher’s little China Doll…”

“Then you might have to keep me from killing him, Pietro,” Angelia interrupted, more abruptly than she intended.  Her enforcer smiled, a smile full of warmth and charm.

“I am conflicted, Donna, although I might just hold your coat for you.  For the insult done your office if nothing else.  But,” the smile faded as he crossed his arms.  “The way he dallies with business not his own, you might have to wait your turn behind prior complaints.  How does he hold his position the way he burns these bridges?”

“Your guess is as good as mine, Pietro.  And,” she added more quietly, seeing Diana escorting the uneasy medical examiner back into the room.  “When we get back to the villa, I want to talk to you about your Proxy.”
