News from Africa, 19 June
Hage Geingob will host Danish PM Mette Frederiksen and Dutch PM Mark Rutte today in Namibia. Green hydrogen will reportedly be among the subjects discussed.
Tumblr media
2. Namibia's proposed visa exemption for Chinese nationals is a bilateral agreement that would benefit both countries, according to China's ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping.
Some Namibian politicians have objected to the proposal, with opposition leader McHenry Venaani claiming it is a "hoodwinking process" for Chinese prisoners to come to the country, and aspiring presidential candidate Job Amupanda alleging that it involves a deal between the ruling party and China to garner support for next year's elections.
The proposed agreement's main goal is to attract Chinese tourists and help Namibia become competitive again after the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Namibia's minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security, Albert Kawana.
3. Angola and Zambia signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in information technology, including digital transformation, AI, and space technology.
The agreement includes the establishment of direct cross-border optical fibre backbone connectivity between the two countries, scheduled to happen this month.
The collaboration is expected to help improve the regulation of the Angolan and Zambian telecom markets and lead to improved coverage and quality of ICT services provided in both countries.
4. Namibia is embarking on a journey of digital transformation to modernize various aspects of the country's life.
The Department of Home Affairs, Immigration and Security recently announced the successful implementation of an online passport application system, a major step towards delivering home affairs government services through digital channels. Namibia is partnering with Estonia to bring government services online and gradually prepare citizens for the transformation ahead. The Vice Minister of ICT recognizes the importance of foreign direct investment (FDI) for African technology spaces, but stresses the need for a clear roadmap or strategy to ensure that solutions developed in Africa fit the lifestyle on the continent.
5. Nigeria has 71 million people living in extreme poverty and 133 million people are classified as multidimensionally poor, according to 2023 data from the World Poverty Clock and the National Bureau of Statistics.
6. The Bank of Namibia increased the repo rate to safeguard the dollar-rand peg and contain inflationary pressures, but this will severely impact consumers who rely on debt to survive.
The governor expressed empathy for people losing their homes due to rising debt costs, and urged the nation to find better solutions to keep more Namibians in their homes while maintaining financial stability.
7. The fighting in Sudan has caused a surge in refugees fleeing to South Sudan, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.
The UN has called for $253 million in funding to respond to the crisis, but donations have been slow to come in.
The lack of resources and funding has led to inadequate food, water, and sanitation facilities in transit camps, resulting in malnutrition, disease, and preventable deaths.

Here are 5 things you must do to get a taste of Dubai’s nightlife:
Tumblr media
Driving down Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, a long eight-lane road that was lit up and busy with traffic even at two in the morning. The designer facades of the tall buildings on either side of the street reflected light. In no other place did I feel as safe returning home at 4 a.m. as I did when a student in Dubai, where I frequently spent the evenings discovering the city's clubs and hangout spots. The nature of Dubai's nights is so distinct from that of Dubai's days that it seems like a completely separate city. One has to get an emirates visa for Nigerian citizens before they can enjoy Dubai’s nightlife.
1.  Go Club-Hopping
Tumblr media
Dubai's club scene is extremely amazing and draws tourists from all over the world. Every type of nightclub can be found across the city, from opulent to edgy, so on Friday nights, you have a tonne of options! Large screens for game nights are available at Barasti (Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort), Chi@The Lodge (Al Nasr Leisureland) has a chic atmosphere and fantastic music, Kasbar (Al Sufouh Road) is a hip spot with authentic Arabic décor, and Nasimi Beach (Atlantis) offers a breathtaking view of Atlantis as a backdrop.
2. Order Late-night Shawarma
Tumblr media
Without a Shawarma run at midnight, no trip to Dubai is truly complete. Lebanese eateries that serve this delectable pork wrap in the early hours of the morning are the spots that are bustling with the most bustle after midnight. Near the sidewalk, where the waiters collect orders from cars, many people will halt their vehicles. Aroos Damascus and Al Shami Restaurant (Al Muraqqabat Road, Deira), Al Mallah (Satwa), and Reem al Bawadi (Jumeirah Road), among others, are the greatest locations for late-night Shawarma.
3.   Drive Through the City by Night
Given the excellent roads, street lighting, and well-organized traffic, driving in Dubai is a delight. Driving at night is a fantastic treat since there is less traffic, better music playing on the radio, lovely roads to go on, and a glittering city to admire. Al Mamzar, where a creek separates Dubai from Sharjah and a lovely Corniche (promenade) draws people for leisurely after-dinner strolls, is my favorite location for a long drive. You can find Filli Café directly across from this bustling location, where you can finish off your late-night trip with a cup of traditional masala chai. highly advisable
4.   Walk along the Marina
Tumblr media
Dubai Marina is a waterfront surrounded by speedboats, luxury yachts, and boats in the more modern area of the city. Families, couples, and friends enjoy the lights from the high towers as they are exquisitely mirrored on the crystal-clear seas as they stroll along the walkway, where European-style cafes are bustling with activity all night. This is a really beautiful way to experience Dubai's nightlife.
5.   Take a Puff of Sheesha at a Lounge
Tumblr media
What would a trip to Dubai be without a sheesha cigarette? Many people still like evenings at quieter sheesha lounges, which typically have multiple screens showing live football or cricket matches, despite Dubai's reputation for having exciting nightclubs and a fantastic food and beverage scene. In addition, they frequently include lounge chairs, pool tables, board games, and video games for a laid-back evening with friends. And of course, sheesha—or hookah, as it is more widely known—in a huge variety of tastes and sizes! This is a typical Dubai night out and is a lot of fun, especially with friends!
Good to Know
In Dubai, the weekend is Friday and Saturday—not Sunday!
Tuesdays or Wednesdays are often designated as Lady's Nights in clubs and pubs. To get the best deal, schedule your girls' nights out on these days.
The Dubai government is very tough about drinking and driving, and on the weekends there are many checkpoints to catch drunk drivers and severely punish them. Since taxis are often available close to popular nightlife areas, returning home is both safe and simple.
In Dubai, the drinking age is 21, in Abu Dhabi, it is 18, and it is forbidden in Sharjah.
Drinking is not permitted in undesignated or unlicensed areas and those who do so face harsh penalties.
Apply emirates visa for Nigeria nationals to enjoy all the tourist places and attractions in Dubai.
In Dubai, there is something to do every single hour of the day or night. What are you still holding out for? Let your hair down and take full advantage of Dubai's vibrant nightlife and for this, you have to take an emirates visa for Nigeria passport holders.

"Black wives are for grown folk." todoroki s.
Tumblr media
to me, shoto screams the “black wives are for grown folk” thing going on right now.
shoto first understood it while attending a jazz themed party that was thrown by the agency for someone’s quirk. when he saw you in the corner of the room he knew he needed to come up to you with his best game, come up respectful.
"excuse me ma'am? you look timeless in that dress."
he's older now, in his early 30’s and he’s killing it as #3 hero. his rebellious face is long gone and he’s accomplished so much in the past twenty years, as well as being married!
i can see him being married to a dark skinned woman who knows how to handle herself well, independence being so sexy to him. she’s got this beautiful fro that covers half her face and she’s always wearing a pretty maroon colored lipstick.
and he takes you outttttt, since you've been with him you've visited france, nigeria, rome, the bahamas, trinidad and tobago, bora bora, the whole europe in general, one time he even took you to puerto rico!
whenever the two of you go out onto the red carpet for pictures, he's got a hand around your waist that's unmoving and even from time to time fixing your fro since over the years of being together you taught him how to do your hair.
if someone talks to his wife a certain way, he's very quick to correct them or even scold them because "a women with such beauty shouldn't be spoken to so casually and should be treated with respect." as he says. even if it's the reporters, interviewers, shoto wouldn't even have cared if it was his father.
"so todoroki, with your career at its peak whats something you and your woman-"
"my wife."
"um, yeah sorry. your wife, are looking forward to?"
"children"

A hierarchy based on skin tone plays an important role in the UAE’s sex industry, according to interviews with trafficked women and visits to spots where prostitutes congregate. Lighter-skinned women from Europe are generally trafficked into higher-end venues serving wealthier customers. Darker-skinned women are often steered to alleys and street corners, providing sex to low-income migrant workers from South Asia and Africa.
One Nigerian woman described being taken by a trafficker to an open-air brothel in the desert between Dubai and another emirate, Abu Dhabi. She and other women would take off their clothes and spread them on the ground, and men would come to have sex with them from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
A Nigerian mother in her 20s said a trafficker led her and two other women to a parking lot in Ajman, one of the emirates that make up the UAE, and forced them to have sex with male clients amid vehicles that were being painted and repaired. At the end of the night, she said, the traffickers took all the money, leaving them with nothing to buy food.
After she broke free of the trafficker, the woman said, she slept in the streets and begged for food. She nearly lost her mind, she said, before a nurse from Nigeria rescued her and helped her get home.
The UAE’s sex industry is shaped by the country’s distinctive demographics and economy.
Nearly 90% of its population comes from somewhere else — mostly foreign workers employed in construction, hospitality and other industries. Most of them are men and they arrive alone. As a result, 69% of the UAE’s population is male. The government deals with these demographic realities by deploying extensive surveillance within the country — and by allowing a bustling sex trade as a way of pacifying male workers, according to two former diplomats who were based in the UAE and monitored sex trafficking.

pictures from the old city of jerusalem's "african quarter", which comprises of ribat al-mansuri and ribat al-basiri. mamluks built the compounds in the late 13th century to house muslim pilgrims and the poor. ottomans used them as prisons, and the british closed the prisons when they occupied jerusalem in 1917. the ribats then came under the ownership of the islamic waqf, and were leased to the local afro-palestinian community.
afro-palestinians have an array of origins. like some other diaspora communities in palestine, some came through pilgrimage - al-aqsa was on their hajj path, and while many would visit to pray there, some decided to settle in jerusalem. there are also some who came to palestine enslaved or conscripted, most recently to ottomans. some came during the time of the british mandate, many as conscripted laborers to the british. afro-palestinians who can trace their ancestry do so to nigeria, chad, senegal, or sudan.
jerusalemite afro-palestinians were employed to guard al-aqsa throughout the ottoman period. during the 1948 palestine war, some joined the arab liberation army and fought with fellow palestinians to defend al-aqsa and their presence in jerusalem. the position of guards has been taken by occupation soldiers since the 1967 war, after which a quarter of the afro-palestinian population became refugees in surrounding countries.
jerusalem's afro-palestinian community still live in the compounds today, which also house the local african community society. (the door in the last picture is theirs.) afro-palestinians as a whole face the same legal, social, and economic restrictions and maltreatment as other palestinians, compounded with the same anti-black racism from israeli government and police which ethiopian jews and eritrean asylum seekers face, which result in a form of "passport racism" unique to them.
