my Stephanie Brown hot take is that she should get mad bitches now that she's single in comics. Yes yes shipping BUT the one time she had sex she was punished by the narrative via teen pregnancy. I think she should be allowed to have as much sex as she wants with zero consequences. Could be a lot of sex, could be a little. Point is she should get to do it without getting narratively baby trapped this time. she should get them pregnant, actually.

rewatching s1 and in ep2 w*ndigo, dean makes a joke about not bringing provisions into the woods just to pull out a bag of peanut butter m&m’s and stick with me here, it’s why the later seasons’ “goofy dean” loses me

this moment is clearly a joke but if you think about it too much, it also makes some sense; a family size bag of peanut m&m’s is calorie dense and even the high sugar is good to keep you moving which they need on an overnight hunt. it also shows how due to their upbringing, they’ve had to eat lower quality food, things they always had access to that was cheap and also in bulk

what does dean eating ghost pepper jerky then tipping water on himself exist for other than to be a cringy joke? what does smelling old chinese food, testing to see if it's still good then shaking his head with cabbage hanging out his mouth when it isn't serve? it's just to make him look stupid and contrast sam's healthy/clean diet (and superiority but that’s another conversation) which has always existed but it used to be nuanced and natural

we see dean as a child give up the food he wanted to eat so sam could eat it. (“i’m sick of spaghetti-os,” “you’re the one who wanted them,” … “i want lucky charms!” “… there’s only enough for one bowl and i haven’t had any yet!” proceeds to give them to sam, 1x18) we know he hustled and stole food to ensure sam ate. (“so, what’d he take?” “get this- peanut butter and bread.” 9x07)

we also see throughout the early seasons dean teasing sam about his salad or healthy choice while he eats some form of burger or other fast food (or notably, cheerfully eating prison food that sam won’t touch, 2x19). it's typical sibling teasing but it also shows that it isn't new for sam to eat like that and for dean to know he eats like that

sam being picky isn't just a character trait they chose for him, it's a result of how dean raised him; he raised him to like and want healthy food and be food secure enough to reject food he didn't want

but dean eats anything he is given and seeks out unhealthy - cheap, plentiful, filling - food

he is the opposite of picky to the point of it being a consistent bit; they show him multiple times eating when it's socially frowned upon to do so eg. questioning a grieving victim when they're trying to be discreet (1x14, 2x15, 2x18)

a similar moment to the chinese food is in 4x19; dean wakes up in the car while sam brushes his teeth outside and is hungry. sam says there's a sandwich in the backseat, dean smells it and recoils bc it's an old tuna sandwich. the moment is funny on its own but it also exists as a comparison of their lives to adam's; he has a loving mother, goes to school and importantly, a steady stable childhood

it’s a joke with a purpose

it also supports dean's food insecurity; he wakes up and is immediately hungry, enough to complain about it and seek out food before anything else

dean is always hungry bc he never has access to nutritionally rich foods bc he got used to using the money he earned to buy sam's more expensive food. he got used to his cheaper, denser foods and grew up with (and continues to live with) intermittent access to said foods. think of how long it takes to drive from one state to another; how many hours it can take to see another town that offers food, if you arrive at a reasonable enough time for anything to be open. also think how they can’t keep any food beyond what fits in an esky; nothing that needs defrosting, nothing can be heated up. it’s bags and jars and take out for as long as they can trust it

then they get the bunker which has its own kitchen

dean even describes himself as "nesting" when he decorates his room, something he hasn't had since he was four years old, and he uses said kitchen to cook a burger from scratch that he is proud of. he is food secure for the first time in his life and it shows in how often he cooks for both himself and sam

so these moments where they have him acting goofy regarding food are no longer character driven and only exist as a joke which is why they come across as cringy and out of character compared to similar earlier moments

a lot of my issues with dean's characterisation started when they introduced the bunker. the argument can and is made that the reason these jokes happen is bc he feels safe in the bunker, that bc he now has a home he can relax and unmask but that still doesn't feel sufficient. they crank up these sillier moments for both of them, giving them a sort of playing house comedy vibe of two roommates with completely different personalities but it doesn't feel like an authentic progression. it feels forced; an attempt at humour for humour's sake

food stopped being an informed part of their characters and their trauma and instead became flanderised; sam is the judgy vegetarian health nut and dean is his borderline slovenly carnivore counterpart

i want jason todd to read to me. i want him to lay next to me in bed and read me his favorite novels. his calming voice lulling me to sleep as he reads me lines from his favorite jane austen novel. and when he senses i’m asleep he places a soft kiss to my temple.

he’s the type to only be able to sleep after you fall asleep. after he senses you’re sleep he shuts the book (bookmarking where he left off ofc), sets it aside, and pulls the string of the lamp on your bedside table before cuddling up to you.

bonus points after he finishes reading you his favorite book he gives you a personalized copy of the book as a gift. By personalized I mean he annotates the book and highlighted the parts you really seemed to enjoy.

Too many of y'all are forgetting that the ever pragmatic Alicent already knew Aegon's life was forfeit years ago if Rhaenyra was to win the war. This isn't a woman who just eagerly and willingly agreed Rhaenyra can kill her son (which a lot of people are acting like she just accepted this with ease). This is a woman who knows that there is no winning under the patriarchy. That's literally her entire arc for this season; it's realizing how much the patriarchy has stolen from her and that it only has violent ends. And that's why she's getting out with her daughter and granddaughter in tow, so they can escape the system that crushed her into a pawn of men. It's one of the reasons she invites Rhaenyra to come with her, because they are both victims of this, their relationship torn asunder at the hands of powerful men.

The fact that she asked Rhaenyra to spare Aegon's life screams how much she cares about him, how much she hopes she can also save him from the patriarchal grasp. Unfortunately for her, Rhaenyra feels trapped in the system and is choosing to continue living in it, which means she has to do the very thing that Alicent predicted years ago. She doesn't want any of this anymore, but this is the world they live in. What's she supposed to do to stop it if both of her sons insist on continuing to take part? On top of that, she's been watching her son in utter agony, barely living for weeks now. Even if she thinks this is a mercy killing, it doesn't make it any easier on her. To say Alicent is choosing this easily for Rhaenyra when really she's just pragmatic and knows how the game works is seriously downplaying her as a character.

I have to really think about this because it's been a while since I've read the books. I needed to refresh my brain a bit!

Since they got together, everyone thinks that they'd push each other to unhealthy heights of Exy obsession. But, that's not the case. Slowly, they are able to coax more interests than Exy out of each other.

With Kevin, it's a lot easier. Neil already knows of Kevin's attempts at having other interests, despite having Exy shoved down his throat since he could talk. So, when the time comes, Neil encourages Kevin to spend time with the things that bring him joy. Such as watching the newest documentary about Ancient Egypt on the History Channel instead of a rerun of a UPenn Exy game, or attending his first Ren Faire dressed to the nines so nobody would recognize him.

Neil tries, too, of course. He picks up 'hobbies' at Kevin's subtle proding, but they always end up as competitions to see who can learn them quicker or better. Instead of being hobbies, they just end up as skills in his set. They learn how to knit together, and Neil is a thousand times better since his hand was never broken; his fingers are more nimble and move at a faster sustainable pace. Kevin sulks at this, obviously. So, when they learn chess, Kevin ensures he always has two wins over Neil.

Exy is still Neil's primary focus, his lifeblood. It's Kevin's, too, but Kevin allows himself a little more freedom. Neil doesn't find as much fun in Renaissance Faires or tours of Native American landscapes as Kevin does, but whatever makes Kevin happy makes Neil happy.

They argue very little at home. Whatever steam they have, they settle it on the Court, either in private sessions or in actual games. They do not hold back. When Neil makes a too-wide pass, Kevin shouts, "Josten! Fix your fucking aim or get off the court!" because he remembers that Neil sucks at putting the dishes in the dishwasher. Likewise, Neil bites back with, "Maybe I wouldn't have done that if you'd get off my ass every once in a while!" because Kevin is always insisting that Neil never does his chores correctly, and perhaps it pisses him off a little.

But, if anything happens to them on the Court, nothing else matters. It could be a good thing; perhaps Kevin made the game-saving goal, or Neil intercepted an important pass. They'll bump shoulders or, if it's appropriate timing, lift each other into the sweetest victory hug. It could be bad. It could be that Kevin's ankle rolls with a sickening crack. Neil drops his racket from whatever corner of the court he's in and rushes to Kevin like his heels are on fire. He pushes everyone away to pull Kevin into his arms, cradling his face as Kevin breaks down, memories of his broken hand crashing in on him. He whispers to Neil, the only person who could truly understand his situation and the only one willing to comfort him, that he's never going to play again. It's all over, he says, over and over again.

Neil tells him it's not true. It's a sprained ankle; it heals in six weeks. Kevin had a right to panic since their lives were reliant on their ability to play Exy, but Neil stayed right by his side the entire time. He shields Kevin from the press, having little patience for their prying questions. He spits out words that he knows Kevin would be horrified by (and so would the US Exy National PR Team). He sits down with Moriyama and explains the injuries and healing time. Moriyama leaves Kevin alone. Neil never lets Kevin get too far into his own head, and at the end of it all, Kevin thanks him in his own way.

Neil is on the receiving end of a lot of things; he finds brand-new running shoes waiting for him on the kitchen counter. There are his favorite protein bars ever from Germany stacked to the brim in the pantry. Kevin tells him, nonchalantly, that they have first-class tickets to watch the best professional Japanese team play in person in a month. It's hard for Kevin to say specific words, but Neil doesn't need them to understand.

But, sometimes, they do come out. At the end of their morning run on a rainy Tuesday, Kevin turns to Neil and says "I love you." Because perhaps that's when he needs to say it - when it's all clogged in his chest and nobody expects him to say it, least of all himself. And Neil will return the affection that night when the sun has set and the fear of nightmares has nestled into his skull. He fears that he has made a mistake letting Kevin so close to his heart, close enough that someone can hurt Neil by taking Kevin away. He turns to Kevin, grabs the nape of his neck, and says "I love you, too."

Because he knows that his fears are inane. That having someone to take care of his heart rather than letting it rot in its bone cage is the best decision he's ever made.

They sleep wrapped in the other's limbs and body. And when one starts shaking from a nightmare, they don't hesitate to pull each other closer. And that's all they need at the end of their long days. Having someone who will worldlessly, unquestioningly support them is enough.

I have a couple of my usual little minor nitpicks (as I am want to have), but I don’t even want to get into them because there were so few and they didn’t impact my enjoyment of the comic all that much. I thought it was super cute!

I won’t spoil anything in case anyone’s interested in buying it for themselves (which, I would say… yeah, buy it, totally!), but what I appreciated the most– especially since this is the first issue and it’s establishing who the girls are for anyone not super familiar with them– is that the girls end up saving the day together. It shows the importance of them not just being heroes, but also being a team (and also being supportive sisters, which… 🥹🫶) and that makes me feel like, even on a basic level, they get the characters. And that’s reassuring! Yay!

Garmr’s head ached like mad.

Pressure, tingling in the roots of his teeth. A dull ache from the bruises along his jaw, eclipsed by the bone-deep, hideous throbbing in his eye.

He hadn’t realized he’d been clenching. Slowly, intentionally, he let his teeth come apart, and felt the ache lessen.

Lifting one hand, he gently tested his wounds.

He wasn’t used to having fingers; they were spidery and highly sensitive to input. So, instead of using them, he used his padded, open palm to massage his chin, like a paw. The skin was swollen, warm to the touch, and emitted a trickle of nociception into his sensorium.

He couldn’t bear to touch the eye or the surrounding skin—the pain it generated was impossible to shut out. It was real in a way that the bruises from his fight with Hachi weren’t. An abstract representation of something foreign grafted onto the core of his being.

If he’d wished, he could have simply removed the bruises hours ago. Certainly, he could have done so when he’d changed avatars; but instead, he’d kept the wounds, transferred them.

The eye, on the other hand, had followed him, no matter how he tried to excise it.

Gingerly, trying not to provoke the ache to new heights, he slid his right eyelid closed. Millimeter by millimeter, he adjusted the shape of the lid to accommodate the new, parasitic eye. Only when he was sure that it was concealed did he call up a mirror to take stock of himself.

…and as he looked, he felt a little better.

Garmr’s new avatar was Doberman-patterned, anthropomorphic. His coat was neatly divided between a base of black and solid patches of a reddish-orange which was close to the color of Martian clay. Short fur laid flat against his skin, allowing the shape of his lean, athletic build to show.

A few adornments: the horns, he’d kept, but his teeth (oh God, her scream) were natural now, and the heat and embers flowing from his throat were gone. His ears were folded down in neat triangles near his cheeks, and the left was pierced with a set of two brass earrings. For his claws, he’d chosen a dull polish, tarnished gold.

He wore simple clothing, a sleeveless black shirt matched with a set of jeans specially cut to accommodate his digitigrade legs and thin tail. The nails of his paws were decorated with the same golden polish.

Initially, he’d intended to switch back to his old quadruped avatar after experimenting with others, trying to see if there was any method of concealing or removing the eye, if only on a cosmetic level.

But now, as he looked at the sleek, inhuman figure in the glass, his heart took root. To him, that figure became Garmr, unwanted eye or not. He felt strangely light on his feet, buoyed a little in spite of the pain.

I look good, he thought.
