yes there's a lot of things to criticize about Star Wars but one thing i will always love it for is being so unabashedly tragic
i'm sure it's been said before, but one of the main things i think powers the SW fandom (fics in particular) is the (in)evitability of it all
time travel fix-its are one of the most popular sub-categories of fics that i've seen (for the prequels at least) but i see it much more rarely in other fandoms. i know each fandom has their own niches that they dig into but star wars fic writers took one look at this decades long story of people who were doomed from the start and said 'not in my house bitch'
and i'm never tired of it, because there's so many places where just one different action could have changed the story entirely, but didn't
was it over the moment Palpatine succeeded in feeding Anakin's fears and his distrust toward the Jedi? the moment the Sith gained control of the senate? what about when the war started, when the Jedi were made generals of men designed to be their executioners? what about when Dooku left the order? when Qui-Gon Jinn died, leaving barely-knighted Obi Wan Kenobi to raise a child he had no idea how to care for? when the Jedi massacred the Mandalorians at Galidraan, leaving Jango Fett primed (hah) for revenge? when Palpatine, and thus the Sith, first gained influence? when the Jedi were tied to the Republic, all the way back at the Ruusan Reformation?
there are so many little moments that turn into this huge web of cause and effect when you take a step back. and in canon, these characters are dooming themselves while we watch, but what reason do they have to do anything different? they don't know they're in a tragedy - its dramatic irony at its goddamn finest
but there's this thing about decisions: for it to be a choice, there has to be another option. and our heroes make their mistakes because that's what they do, while we aren't privy to that other option, leaving that little what-if. it's a favorite human pastime, to think about what might have been.
we start at episode 4, though, fourty or so years after what you could arguably call the start, and find ourselves watching the dominoes fall in place throughout 1, 2, and 3.
and we can hate the choices, hate the tragedy, hate what happened to our beloved characters, but we knew. we had the luxury of knowing.
it's a love story, it's political intrique, it's sci-fi at its finest, and they were dead from the start.

First recap was ok, but I'm in the mood to draw characters and I wanted to do a proper lineup/height charts (and then promptly drew maul in heels and Padmé on tiptoe..... I am a genius)

[COMMISSIONS]
[PART 1] - [PART 2]
Rambling below vvv
It's always so temping to dress maul in white, and I once again caved kflodkd
Also ! I always draw her pre tpm, because it's a) the time in her life when I see her wear silly/'extravagant' outfits the most (can't really do that when you're a half dead giant spider eating rats in a garbage world fkldodi and after *that* I don't think her spirit is really into accessorizing and wearing cute fits- still a slut tho) and b) mechanical limbs are hard to draw and a pain to render (one day I will draw her old I swear !)- but ! All this to say : she stay "small" even after getting bisected ! The bones are staying in the pussy !! Let her be short, then a spider, then short once again but this time with cool metal legs :)
I usually draw Padme all serious, but she can't be all business like when frolicking in a field with her dumbass girlfriend and I think drawing her silly healed a bit of my soul <3 (also took liberties with the yellow dress design- wanted to make it a bit my own and I kind of hate the original faded yellow ngl)
For Obiwan and Anakin, I wanted them in civilian clothing because Jedi outfits are a bit boring (for what I'm doing here)- but I also wanted to stay in the same color scheme as their Jedi's outfit (and I ended up swaping them because I wanted to see obiwan dressed in black kxkdldk). I am very proud of Obiwan's outfit !! I think it fits her, while staying relatively in character :D and next to her you get no rizz butch anakin :)))
I'm having a lot of fun making these :D even if this rendering style takes so fucking long- next up is either Palpatine, Vader, Dooku, boba fett or leia, han, lando, chewie (and maybe luke, we'll see)
PS : I have never watched the 3D clone war show, this is mostly based on the movies :)

What would they have done with all the bodies of the Jedi who died on Geonosis?
There were 187 of them. Seems like too many to take back with them for funerals on Coruscant.
Did they build the funeral pyres right there in the arena? Above the bloody sand? As the red sun of Geonosis set, was there a great pillar of smoke, that all saw, and all fell silent at? Did the clones stand guard above them, and around them—protective rings of an honour guard, tall and straight in the shadows of the coliseum, silent, watching, learning?
And the clones who died? There were thousands. Did the Jedi ask, what their custom was, only for the clones to respond that it didn't matter? Did they quote the Kaminoans: "In water you are born, in fire you die, your bodies seed the stars"? Did the Jedi glance at each other, and nod, and quietly begin leading the clones in building their own funeral pyres? I wonder if they questioned the clones stripping the bodies of all weapons or armor that could be reused.
But in the end it was all the same light, all the same smoke. Mingled together into the night sky.
Did Obi-Wan and Anakin and Padmé all stand together, with their bacta patches and pain-blockers, silent as stone while the orange light flickered over their faces? Obi-Wan with the silver tongue, and not a word to say. Anakin half-blind between the ache in his body and the ache in his heart and the ache in the Force, which were all one and the same, only feeling Padmé's hand in his, and Obi-Wan's arm braced around his waist. And Padmé, torn between fear and defiance, despair at war with her hope, because her nightmares are alive, and she wants both protection and to protect, so she holds Anakin’s hand, and sets her jaw, and holds her eyes open until they burn.
Maybe that was what it was like.

One day, Bail Organa receives an ominous message on a communicator that had been agreed upon never to be used for anything other than emergencies.
Urgent: Shadows converge on our binary suns. Eclipse imminent for one. Halt essential. Aid required swiftly.
For seven years doom had crept around the corners of Bail's conscious awarenes; always whispering, always taunting, always fearing. Somehow he is still illprepared for it to suddenly coil around his throat.
His shirt collar feels infinitesimally tighter. Bail takes a breath, he holds it, he releases it.
"Bail? Is something wrong?"
Time to lay all his cards on the table. He nods, shakes his head, then pauses. Yes something is indeed wrong, but it's nothing he can divulge any details on, despite being on his own fleet.
"Take your ship to these coordinates and do everything you can to retrieve and protect what will be placed in your care. It's of utmost importance. Do you understand?" he says, placing the communicator with its entered coordinates into Ahsoka Tanos' outstretched hand.
Fulcrum doesn't even hesitate. She nods. This is a mission like any other as far as she is aware. Nothing she's learned indicates any connection to Ahsoka Tano.
Yet.

crossover AU idea: star wars× hunger games
The Republic has fallen, and the Jedi have been eradicated. In order to maintain control, the Empire needs to find a way to keep force sensitive children from becoming too powerful, and keep the planets of the Empire under control.
To do this, the empire maintains a list of all force sensitive children in the Empire. Every year, a lottery is drawn for two champions from each planet, to be taken to an artifically constructed arena to fight to the death. Most of these children have no training in the force, as doing so would be punishible by death for not only the child, but everyone involved. The winners are taken away from their families forever, to be trained in the dark side of the force by the Sith emperor and his apprentice, Lord Vader. The champions become soldiers, and the Empire finds a certain joy in breaking them down until nothing but anger and fear remains.
For years, the Empire has subjugated countless planets, revelling in the continued murders of these children and extermination of the Jedi. But secretly, on the remote outer rim planet Tattooine, a young boy named Luke Skywalker has been learning about the Force from his old friend, a recluse named Ben Kenobi. When the unthinkable happens, and Luke's name is drawn, he prepares to head to the Capitol of the Empire to fight for his life, and the lives of everyone he loves. But what will happen to luke when he learns his father, the great champion Anakin Skywalker, may not only still be alive, but may be someone he will have to defeat in order to survive?

obikin au where obi-wan is a writer and anakin is the main character in every novel he writes. everyone is a fan of anakin skywalker, the ruthless pirate who hides a heart of gold and shows it only to his beloved who he only sees once a year; everyone is in love with ani sky, the secret service agent who is desperately in love with his boss and is the only reason he hasn't left a job he despises. everyone cried when the chosen one was forced to let his one true love die because the fate of the universe demanded it so.
obi-wan has become a household name writing about anakin, making millions with every book he sells. no matter what, people seem to love anakin in any form and shape he takes and obi-wan has made a fortune of that love.
but what people doesn't know is that, hidden in obi-wan's house, deep where no one can find him, anakin is an actual muse, one qui-gon (obi-wan's mentor and father figure) kidnaped years ago and entrapped in his house after a writer's block nearly drove him to ruin.
(or an obikin au based on calliope's episode of sandman)

Stay with me
So, well, my murderous muse has been at it again.
Ambiguous and heartbreaking ficlet below the cut, proceed with caution.
The words were an almost inaudible whisper, and he doubted anyone else would have heard them.
***
"Stay with me?"
"I promise you, dear one."
He placed his hand on his former apprentice's shoulder, feeling his tension ease a little.
"Good."
They walked in silence, their footsteps loud against the hard floor that led to a hall deep beneath the temple that had not been used for hundreds of years. It was a cruel fate that it was now that it was needed again.
But peace had a price, as it turned out.
As they approached the chamber Anakin stopped abruptly.
The others accompanying them halted as well, but Obi-Wan waved them on, and after a brief glance and nod, they allowed master and apprentice a moment.
"I wish..." Anakin's voice trailed off.
"I know, I wish too, but wishes are empty and some actions cannot be undone."
A small crooked smile tugged at the corners of Anakin's mouth for a moment.
"Even now you lecture me."
"Even now."
Obi-Wan sighed and wrapped his hand around Anakin's neck drawing his face down towards his, pressing their foreheads together.
"Thank you."
Anakin's voice cracked at that one word, but he swallowed and continued.
"I am grateful. You saved me."
Obi-Wan sighed, pushing his own emotions out into the Force that felt restless and unsettled, still in turmoil over what had happened and what was coming.
"I promise you it will be quick."
They continued onward, and Obi-Wan was surprised by the calmness that Anakin exuded, an acceptance of what was to come that he had not expected. His apprentice had always been fighting, had never surrendered before, only to him, and maybe that was why it had ended as it had.
"I'm glad you're here with me." Anakin said quietly.
Feeling regret and despair well up inside him, Obi-Wan reached out to stop Anakin again, needing to get the words out.
"Forgive me for failing you."
"You never failed me. I failed myself."
The chamber was far from full, as many of those who should have been here would never be returning, and those now standing on the many steps were burdened by what had transpired and what was about to happen.
Anakin's words were calm and confident, he had come to terms with what had happened, and now Obi-Wan had to do the same.
***
On the podium in the center of the hall were two figures, one kneeling and the other standing.
The kneeling figure raised his gaze, golden eyes searching blue, begging for closure, for forgiveness, but still his executioner hesitated.
How should one half of a whole be able to cut the other away?
And yet it was what was expected, what had to happen.
They held each other's gaze, and suddenly a bright blue blade flashed through the air.
A gasp ran through the room and on the platform two figures now knelt, holding each other in a tight embrace, their foreheads resting against each other.
And then, before anyone could intervene, the sound of a deadly blade igniting sounded again.

Oh boy... chapter 4 of Don't Dream It's Over is looking like it's going to be my longest chapter yet.
Tumblr media
It's just under 15.5k words at the moment, and I still have one fairly large section to write for Korkie's birthday, and then I also need to finish writing the Utapau section... *sigh*
Why do I do this to myself?
