Thinking about different parts of Hazbin Hotel and the different parts of Christianity they critiqued.
For one, I saw some people say that they were surprised that Vaggie was maimed and kicked out of Heaven for sparing one singular demon child. That didn’t surprise me in the least. It’s very clearly a one strike you’re out situation, and for fundamentalists, they do believe some people deserve to die (yes, even children). If you don’t believe me, crack open the Bible. God kills plenty of children there. Furthermore, I like that Vaggie is a lesbian who was kicked out of Heaven. She’s literally a lesbian, but she was kicked out of Heaven for not obeying the rules, making one mistake—her story works on a literal and metaphorical level, and I love that. I don’t just like when it’s a metaphor for some type of discrimination, the literal should be there too. And I’m a lesbian, so I like relating to her.
For two, the moving of the goal posts in regard to Angel Dust. Adam came up with three completely random things, but clearly no one in that courtroom expected Angel Dust to do them. When he did, suddenly it’s “not everything is spelled in ink” and “why isn’t he here then.” Which is exactly what I expected them to do. If Angel Dust did somehow meet their arbitrary standard, they’d just dismiss it outright or come up with something else he didn’t do. Par for the course.
For three, the fact that Sera told Emily she needed to stop questioning things because if she did she’d end up Fallen like Lucifer. Because that is, once again, a Christian belief: that questioning things is a sin. You’re supposed to just accept it. It sounds bizarre, but it is true.
I think it was an excellent job in terms of critiquing Christianity and pointing out a lot of the flaws inherent. For people like me who were raised Catholic, the rhetoric and things the characters did were all-too-familiar. Even Sera describing the extermination as “a hard decision” was exactly what my grandfather said about his decision to not come to my wedding. (Which, yeah, thanks, asshole.)

Husk: *flirting* On a scale of one to ten, you're a nine, because I'm the one you need.
Angel: …I'm a ten
Husk: It's a pickup line-
Angel: *clapping between syllables* I.👏 Am.👏 A.👏 Ten.👏

Do you ship swap Angel with someone? (Love your swap Au it’s so creative)
(thank you so much!! <33)
I ship him with Husk!
I haven't figured out what their dynamic would be like I this au yet since Angel's isn't owned by Charlie which means they don't have that same sort of situation to relate to. But I do think when they first meet it's similar to how they were in episodes 1-3.
Since Angel didn't have the protection of the Vees, he got into the habit of being a little pushy in an effort to find a (somewhat) safe place to stay during exterminations and turf wars and stuff. And even after he eventually met and moved in with Cherri, he still hasn't managed to kick the habit. Especially when every other demon in hell flirts with him in the same way. Husk is the first person to try and set boundaries with him so he has a little trouble adjusting.
Husk spends a ton of time at the bar, but despite this he doesn't make any effort to talk to Angel. The first time he sat for a drink he let Angel make it for him, but it was so awful he just walked behind the bar and made it himself. And he continues to do this every time after, which pisses Angel off since he doesn't get to practice making drinks or see if he's improving.
Since Angel knows he can't make a decent drink, he tries to fulfill his other bartender duties by getting Husk to open up and talk to him, but Husk doesn't want to. He has no reason to be vulnerable with someone who constantly pushes his boundaries. Especially not when he thinks that Angel couldn't possibly relate to the situation he put himself in. And since Husk is working for Vox, he doesn't have the energy or opportunity to pick out the cracks in Angel's mask and figure out that they are a little similar like he did in canon.

Alastor to Husk: If you ever talk back to me again, I will prove you and all Sinners wrong that you can die twice!
Lucifer: Hey, Alastor, your mom's straight!
Alastor:
Husk:
Angel Dust, facepalming: No, dammit! You're s'pposed ta say his ma's gay!
Lucifer, patting Angel's back: Now, now, Angel Dust. You of all people should know homosexuality is no laughing matter.
Angel Dust: ?????????

I think I might be an angel, and the thought scares me.
I'm not religious and never have been– I don't believe in, serve, or feel any attachment to a god or deity, but something in me is still drawn to the concept of divinity, purity, holiness. I feel like my purpose is to watch over the world, to guide humanity through their struggles and teach them what is right.
I'm worried that to call myself angelkin would be appropriating something I know very little of, and I truly would hate to offend. But I can't deny the phantom wings on my back. Can divinity and atheism coexist?
I'm not sure what to do. Advice/reassurance/feedback of any kind would be appreciated. I feel so lost.

I almost put this in my tags for the last post, but I think it deserves it's own thing.
I am exhausted with this idea that love is inherently Pure and Good, therefore any love which is not Pure and Good is not actually love.
Love transcends morality. That is what makes it so powerful and beautiful. It can be (and often is) the source of goodness, what motivates selflessness and sacrifice. But those are the effects of love, not a quality that is inherent to it.
Love can also be a force of great evil. It fills us, consumes us, changes us, brings us to our knees and lifts us up from the darkness. We can be driven to destroy to protect it, or to destroy indiscriminately when faced with its abscence.
Love transcends reason, logic, and self-preservation. It means different things to different people, has different effects on different people.
Imo, pushing the idea that love is by definition "good" is actually quite dangerous. People know how they feel. Buying into this view leads many to stay in situations that are harmful because they think it can't be that bad if they're so in love.
Followed by the horrible need to reimagine what you had with someone after the fact, deciding to label the whole affair as "not real". You can't trust your own feelings or your own memories because they don't match up to the idealized vision you have of love.
Recognizing that the love itself was real, but the situation was bad allows for better judgment going forward. When you recognize that love still needs to be tempered by reason, that it can be unhealthy or harmful, you are less likely to be blinded your emotions.

Your. Thoughts. On. Destiel. Are. Fire. 🔥 Cas is a giant being of light the size of a Chrysler Building!! He burned out Pamela's eyes when he first appeared!! He made Jimmy Novak boil his hand in water to prove his faith and devotion. And while Cas does grow into a sad little meow meow over time (thanks to his contact with humanity) he is initially a terrifying creature from another plane of existence, which Dean in his infinite horny wisdom, manages to look at and go "I wanna fuck that because it terrifies me and I wanna obey because I barely understand my own kinks, which happen to be are being used like a hot wet rag and being subservient to a warrior of God stronger than me."
(I like destiel too, I just want it to be kinky and weird and monsterfucking adjacent)
Yeah, I'm honestly not very into destiel for the most part because a lot of the stuff that gets popular is either very bland to me or straight up frustrating to see (<- perpetually annoyed that people attribute all of Castiel's rebellion to "loving Dean") which means if I want to get invested in this ship, it's gotta get real weird, real fast. Destiel at its best is kinky and weird and slightly dubcon either because Castiel is a being beyond human comprehension who wants Dean and doesn't know how to deal with this except to take what he wants, offered or not, or because it's late seasons destiel and Castiel is very in love with a man who, even at the best of times, has a running counter in his head of how far over the line of monstrousness/betrayal Castiel is allowed to stray before Dean puts a bullet in his head like a hunter should (picture Dean and Castiel domestic bunker life with cute morning kisses and such, but Dean is the one with custody of Castiel's angel blade, just in case, and Castiel lets him have it because he's so screwed up about all the harm he's caused that he's accepted that if Dean kills him, it's for the best.)
it's gotta get freaky.

So, bit of a hot take from me because I'm genuinely interested in the reaction people may give this post.
Be mindful that this is my opinion and you are allowed to have yours.
I, genuinely, cannot care about Angel Dust.
Now, when I say that, I am not saying I dislike his existence, I just can't bring myself to care about him.
He is many people's favorites, hell, he is Viv's favorite, but I cannot help but ask.. Why?
He has so many fans, so much attention placed on him, literally two songs dedicated to him(only one being in the actual show), but I literally don't know how people can care for him.
When I say this, I'm not directing it to the concepts and hard topics used in his story. I honestly would've thought that it would help me care about him. People who like him, liking the dark topics covered in his story, has a right to. It is, at least some, representation for people who've been in similar situations or straight up in those situations.
And it's not like I can watch what happens to him with a straight face either, I do feel bad for what he has to go through, watching Val hurt and exploit Angel makes me squirm, it makes me feel icky. How the topics handled in the show, the question of if it's good representation/writing or not, isn't what I'm getting into, that's for other people to debate. But it shows these things and those who relate or are sympathetic have a right to be.
However, I can't bring myself to care for Angel, not the topics, but him as a character. Why should I care about Angel? Why should I care about who he is or his role in the story? Why should I give a damn about what happens to him? The only answer, I can ever see, to those questions is his story with Val. That is the only reason I should even slightly care because that is one of the worst things someone could go through.
For anything else though? I can't find anything. I can't find a reason to know who he is, I can't find a reason to cheer when he is happy, cry when he gets sad, ect.
I can't pinpoint why that is exactly. Maybe it's his personality, I'm not very connected to it, I don't find him that exciting or funny. Okay but that doesn't feel like the full answer. Maybe it's the show's pacing? The fact that you go through his arc lightning fucking fast and any built up care you would have is the content Viv and the team spill before shit was made seems kinda rushy and spoon feeding.
Whatever the reason is, the pilot, the show, and Viv herself failed to hook me with Angel Dust. I cannot see how people are fans of him other than the serious topics he brings. It makes me heavily question how people give a fuck about this guy because the only reason I can see, to explain why people care and like him, isn't even him. It's a topic that could be anyone's story.
Let me ask you, if Angel didn't have the serious topics in his story, how many people would care about him? Take a moment to detach those topics from him, act like they aren't in his story at all, and think about how you feel about him without that in his character. Got how you feel about that version of him? Ok. Good. Now take those topics and put them into a character like Niffty, imagine that Niffty was the one going through that instead, does your opinion on Niffty change at all?
Now I'm not going to say that everyone who did this instantly stopped caring about Angel or instantly liked Niffty more, there are probably a lot of people who still love Angel or who still are neutral on Niffty. I'm not trying to say, for sure, that the only reason Angel is liked is because of the topics and representation he brings but I feel like that's a good chunk of it, because without that, I can't see a single reason as to why Angel is a fan favorite.
It could just be me, it might not be. I can't explain why I don't care for him and if you like him, that's fine, you are free to like whatever characters you watch, but it leaves me with a question to ask you.
Why do you like Angel Dust?
