Here is a short one shot I wrote. I hope you guys like it ! It’s a Sirius and reader one shot when they are still in Hogwarts !
Sirius and Y/N : the stars listen
My name is Y/N, and I’m a Gryffindor 6th year. So before I start this story which is the story of me and my friend Sirius... yes Sirius as in Sirius Black, brother of Regulus Black, the famous Marauder and best friend of James Potter... that Sirius Black...
So I should begin by telling you a bit about myself. I am a Muggle born which means that when I first got my letter from Hogwarts I was ecstatic... this was the best news I had ever heard. I met Sirius on the train with James, Sirius, Remus and Peter and we became friends. I was always closer to Sirius, he was the first one to tell me about his family problems.... I remember it like it was yesterday... It was the summer holidays of our 3rd year.. I had gone home and was in the back garden reading a book Remus had recommended when I heard a noise coming from a bush... I got up and Sirius came out of it all bloody and panting for breath. I let go of everything and took him in my arms. He rested in my room and I felt a pinch. My heart was beating fast.... he was delirious from the pain. I helped him the best I could... I remember the tears and the pain he felt... I remember every word of our exchange... and what I remember the most was that ... that day ... that hot summer day .... I realised that .... I was in love with my best friend.... I felt the pain ... his pain .... I was irrevocably in love with the infamous Sirius Black.
That summer, he would come to my house and we would spend hours talking. That summer was the best summer of my life.
So now you have a bit of a back story I can start the story.
It started when Slughorn asked us to make Amortentia as he always like to do with his 6th years. I was partnered up with Lily Evans, my girl best friend and roommate. We made the potion with a little help from her old friend Severus. She wasn’t talking to him really ... and I understood why .... he had called her a Mudblood ... that word .... I had been called it a few times but Sirius would always come and defend me. I always loved that about him ... he was a pure blood but he always defended the ones who weren’t like him.
The class went on and our potion was done. Professor Slughorn came up to us to congratulate us.
⁃ well done !! Well done !! Could I ask you to tell me what you smell miss Y/L/N ?
⁃ I ... I ... mmm I smell ...lemon... pine... smoke ... something old .... a record shop .... and .... sorry ...
I stopped right there .. I was smelling Sirius’s cologne. Lily looked at me oddly....
⁃ Y/N ..
⁃ class dismissed !
I walked out as fast as I could. I loved Lily but she could sometimes be a nosy Parker.
It was the last lesson of the day so I walked to the library and took out a book.
I stayed there until dinner time. It was always quiet this time of year, because mid term exams were over. As I walked into the Great Hall I saw a my table, the Gryffindor table being the loudest as usual.
⁃ Y/N !!!!, shouted James, get over here now !!!
⁃ WHAT ????, I shouted back and laughed.
I sat down at my usual stop next to Remus and opposite Sirius who was laughing with James
⁃ what did I miss ?, I asked with a smile
⁃ Sirius’s got a new girl that’s what !!, shouted James
My smile faded away immediately but I put it back on. I couldn’t let it get to me.
⁃ oh wow ... congrats Pads !
⁃ Thanks N/N !
⁃ How come you never told me ?, I asked
⁃ Sorry N/N you were so busy with your revisions that i forgot !, he said with that grin that always made the butterflies in my stomach explode.
⁃ Well who is she come on ? Tell us !, I said trying to be the best best friend I could ever be.
So he started to tell us about her eyes, her hair... i blocked out most of what he was saying .... it was hard ... very hard ... i had never seen him talk about a girl like
this before ... i felt a pain in my chest, the same
pain ... i felt every time James would recount his best mates love adventures or how Sirius got a date with this girl or that Ravenclaw Prefect ... i got up.
⁃ Y/N ? are you ok ?, asked Remus
⁃ yeah ! sorry ! i forgot to do a homework for Binns ! i'll meet you in the common room !
I walked out really fast.. I had ran up to the astronomy tower.. the astronomy tower ... it was my sanctuary... I would go up every time I felt down or .... I sat down and let my legs dangle of the top. I looked up at the stars.. Sirius had taught me all of them... the names of the constellations... my favorite was ... of course ... Sirius ! The dog constellation !
I felt tears rolling down my cheeks... Merlin ! Don’t I look pathetic ... crying over a boy ... a boy I love ...
⁃ you know ... you should really look out and keep an ear out for strangers listening in on you !
I jumped and looked around to see non other than Remus Lupin
⁃ what do you want Remus ?, I said drying a tear away.
⁃ Well ... you know you can always talk to me ! I know the stars listen but ... maybe a friendly face might help ..
⁃ how much of it did you hear ?
⁃ Well let’s say I’m shocked no one else at school hasn’t heard your confession or your undying love for our favorite dog
⁃ You better not say anything Remus ‘
⁃ Ok ok ... chill ... but you know ... maybe you should tell him
⁃ Who ?
⁃ Y/N !
⁃ Good night Remus !
I walked down the stairs and got back to the common room. I couldn’t see Sirius... well it was probably for the best.
I walked up the stairs and got into my dorm... the girls were fast asleep as I got under the covers... I was welcomed with open by Morpheus.
As I woke up the next day, I went down to have breakfast with Marlene, who kept talking about Dorcas and her plan for their perfect date. I’m not going to lie and say I wasn’t jealous of them. They had both found each other and were perfect for one another.
So I listened to Marls and gave her advice :
⁃ you know .... Instead of buying her something why not make her a nice thing !
⁃ That’s a really good idea N/N ! Thanks !
⁃ You’re welcome !
We sat down and started to have breakfast. Dorcas joined us with Lily.
⁃ where were you last night ?, asked Lily
⁃ Oh mmmm I....
⁃ probably went looking for a dark, tall, handsome man..., said Marlene with her eyebrows going up and down.
⁃ I don’t know what you are talking about !, I said drinking my pumpkin juice trying to hide my blush.
⁃ Come on ! It’s obvious you like him !, answered Dorcas
⁃ Leave it !, I said
⁃ Guys guys guys ! If N/N doesn’t want to talk about it ! Then let’s not pressure them ...
⁃ thanks Lily !
⁃ Although.... yesterday during potions... you did describe the scent....
⁃ who described what ?, asked Sirius sitting down next to me
⁃ Nothing ! Aren’t you supposed to be at practice ?, I asked
⁃ James caught a cold and is in bed !, he said taking a sip of my juice
⁃ Oh ... is he alright ?, asked Lily
I smirked at my best friend and he nodded:
⁃ why don’t you go and see him ?, I said with a smirk
Lily went as red as her hair, Sirius and I snickered
⁃ well ... while Lily tries and understand her complex feelings ... want to come to Hogsmeade ?, asked Padfoot
⁃ Yeah sure.... I’ll get my purse, I exclaimed
⁃ Great ! Meet you at the front !
I ran up to my dorm. I got my prettiest coat and put my purse. I arrived at the front of Hogwarts out of breath to see Lily, Marlene, Dorcas, Peter, Remus.... and Sirius with his girlfriend... Eloise.... she was a Ravenclaw 5th year... she had blond hair and green eyes... she was pretty... not like me... I had to stop my staring.... really Y/N.... stop thinking about him... he’s got a girlfriend... Merlin !
⁃ ready to go ?, asked my best friend
⁃ Mmm yeah... sure ! Hey Eloise !
⁃ Hey Y/N !
The afternoon was spent watching my best friend snogging in one of the booths in the Three Broomsticks... I wanted to vomit... I had to hold the urge.... Remus was there with me the whole time... we were about to leave when Sirius came up to us.
⁃ hey ! Eloise wants to stay a bit longer ! I’ll catch up with you guys in the common room ok ?
⁃ Yeah sure ! Whatever !, I said
⁃ Y/N ! What’s wrong ?, he asked concern in his eyes
⁃ Nothing ! Don’t want to keep your girlfriend waiting !, I spit back
I walked away. When The castle was in full view, ran leaving my friends behind me. I wanted to be left alone... the boy I have loved for so long...
this was pathetic I knew it... I looked at the picture frame ... it was of me and Sirius... we were laughing at one of James’s bad jokes.
I had to put it down...I can’t watch it anymore... I can’t help it.... he’s the reason for the tear drops on my guitar... Godric now I’m quoting Taylor Swift songs...
I hadn’t realised it was time for dinner... I looked at the clock and I had missed dinner... I went downstairs hearing laughters. I watched my friends around the fire... Lily was next to James taking care of him... of course he was loving it... that crazy stag !
I saw Remus listening to Peter talking about Merlin knows what... Sirius was watching the flammes in the fireplace. I walked past them and out of the portrait. I walked to the place I loved.. you guessed it... the astronomy tower... the stars were out, the sky was clear and the moon was in a nice croissant.
⁃ why won’t you love me ? ... I’ve always been there for you ... Why !!!!! Why won’t you listen to me stars !!!!
⁃ Who are you talking to ??, asked Padfoot
I turned around quickly seeing my best friend with his hair down.. a gust of wind made his hair twirl around his gorgeous face... I couldn’t help but blush... I turned around to look at the castle grounds... I felt him come close to me.
⁃ what are you doing here all on your own... ?
⁃ I needed the air ! Why aren’t you with Eloise ?
⁃ It’s past curfew you know ?
⁃ Oh really ? I was lost in thought !!
⁃ Yeah ... talking to the stars ?
I was even more red than Lily’s hair ...
⁃ what are you talking about ?
⁃ Come on N/N ! I know you ! And I want you to know ...
⁃ what ??
I turned my head to look at him to feel his lips on mine... he had his hand on my jaw... I felt my eyes close to savour the moment. His lips tasted like fire whiskey and cigarettes... we broke appart and I looked into his grey eyes. He had a smirk on his face.
⁃ but.... I don’t understand ... what about Eloise...?
He smiled that toothy smile I loved so much...
⁃ you are really something you know ?, he whispered, I have always loved you ! N/N ! Eloise was helping me get your attention ! And I guessed it worked ... haha
I had my hands over my mouth, I felt tears starting to prickle down my eyes. I was happy...
⁃ hey hey hey ! Don’t cry beautiful !! What is it ?
⁃ I am happy ... these are happy tears ! I love you !!
I froze... I had said the “L” word before anything could happen... I messed up... I was about to leave when I felt his hand on my forearm... I looked up to see Sirius smiling and looking at me in a way I had never seen before.
⁃ I love you too dove ! I love you too !
I felt his lips back on mine and I smiled. Maybe the stars are listening. If you are thank you, thank you for making this possible.
The stars listen.

This February, celebrate Black History Month with Black authors!
Culture is important, whether it’s your own to celebrate or someone else’s that you can learn about and appreciate. In the last few years, we’ve seen a steady increase in people of colour, LGBT communities, non-Christian religions, and non-European cultures represented in young adult and middle-grade fiction. While this is a great improvement and definitely a step in the right direction, people of colour are still underrepresented. We can do more to make sure that authors of colour are seen and heard. The following list, while by no means exhaustive, is a selection of excellent YA and MG novels written by Black authors*. This month, take some time to explore their stories.
*This list appears in no particular order and is not intended to be read as though any one book is superior to another.
1. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (Young Adult)
When sixteen-year-old Starr Carter witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend, she must decide whether to lie low or to join the protesters who seek justice for Khalil. A touching, timely, and often raw story about a girl who finds herself when she feels most lost, it’s no wonder this book has spent more than 100 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers list.
2. Riding Chance by Christine Kendall (Young Adult)
Based on Philadelphia’s Work to Ride program, this novel follows a young man who gets into some trouble at school and winds up doing community service at the Chamounix Stables in Fairmount Park. There, he learns to play polo, an intense sport that teaches perseverance and focus. This book really hit home for me, having spent most of my childhood at polo matches with WTR. In real life, Work to Ride provides underprivileged children and teenagers in Philadelphia with constructive extracurricular activities, peer mentorship, and even college enrollment assistance. To learn more about Work to Ride, check our their website or Facebook page!
3. Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann (Young Adult/New Adult)
Let’s talk about the amazing QPoC rep in this book! Alice, who is asexual and biromantic, is determined to spend her post-breakup summer on a tv binge. She definitely does not intend to fall for her co-worker, Takumi. Whoops. This book is a mostly-fluffy slow-burn romance, full of nerdy pop-culture references. If you remember tumblr circa 2011, this book is for you.
4. Garvey’s Choice by Nikki Grimes (Middle Grade)
Garvey’s father has always wanted him to be an athlete, but Garvey is just not interested. When his only friend convinces him to join their school chorus, Garvey finds confidence and a new way to communicate to his distant dad. Told in verse, this is a heartfelt novel about one boy’s transformation through music.
5. American Street by Ibi Zoboi (Young Adult)
In her debut novel, Ibi Zoboi draws on her experience as a Haitian immigrant to tell the story of Fabiola, a young woman whose mother is detained by U.S. Immigration when they emigrate from Port-au-Prince to Detroit. This book explores the cost of the “American dream” with a mix of family drama, romance, and a hint of magical realism.
6. The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo (Young Adult)
Xiomara feels both invisible and too visible in a world that doesn’t want to hear her but is happy to objectify her. To express herself and to find some relief from her religious mother’s strict expectations, she turns to slam poetry. This novel-in-verse includes romance, wavering faith, and feminism.
7. Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson (Young Adult)
This powerful novel features a young woman who is determined to make it out of her impoverished neighbourhood. Jade’s mother taught her to take every opportunity she’s offered, so every day she takes the bus across town to a private school where there are plenty of opportunities, even if she doesn’t quite fit in. But some opportunities are less welcome than others, like the chance to join a mentorship program for “at-risk” girls. Sick of being singled out as someone who needs help, Jade hopes to find some autonomy and to stay true to herself.
8. Little & Lion by Brandy Colbert (Young Adult)
Suzette is home in Los Angeles for the summer and she isn’t sure she ever wants to go back to boarding school. Between supporting her bipolar brother, Lionel, and trying not to think about her clandestine relationship with her roommate, she’s got a pretty full plate. Unfortunately, she’s also falling for the same girl that Lionel likes. When Lionel’s mental illness sends him spiraling, Suzette must face her past to help him. This family features a blended family, Black Jewish characters, and a queer woman of colour.
9. Courage by Barbara Binns (Middle Grade)
T’Shawn has done his best to help out since his father’s death, but life gets complicated when his brother Lamont comes home from a stint in prison. T’Shawn finds peace on the diving board, and earns a scholarship to join a prestigious team at a local swim club. But when the neighbourhood crime rate starts to rise, T starts to think that he and Lamont may never put their pieces back together.
10. Monster by Walter Dean Myers (Young Adult)
A murdered drugstore clerk, a trial, and a young man in crisis. Monster is the story of Steve Harmon, amateur filmmaker and alleged murderer. To cope with the trial, Steve writes down the proceedings as if it were a film script, but as he tries to tell his own story, the truth starts to feel a little hazy. This one has also been adapted as a graphic novel.
11. All-American Boys by Jason Reynolds (Young Adult)
Rashad wasn’t stealing, but people sure seem to think he was. After he drops a bag of chips and a police officer beats him for it, Rashad is stuck in a hospital bed while the nation debates his character. Meanwhile, Quinn, a white boy who witnessed the beating, comes to learn that racism didn’t end with the Civil Rights Movement.
12. Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor (Young Adult)
Sunny is an albino girl living in Nigeria. Her skin tone often makes her an outsider, but she soon finds herself drawn into a community of magic users called Leopard People. Together with her new friends, Sunny is tasked with tracking down a killer known for maiming children.
13. The Red Pencil by Andrea Davis Pinkney (Middle Grade)
Amira is finally twelve and hopes to start school, but her life is turned upside down when the Janjaweed militia attacks her Sudanese village and her family must make the long and difficult journey to a refugee camp. Life at the camp is hard, but when an aid worker gives her a pencil and paper, Amira’s world begins to expand.
14. One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia (Middle Grade)
Delphine Gaither and her two younger sisters travel from Brooklyn to Oakland to spend the summer with a mother they barely know. Imagine their surprise when she sends them to a Black Panther summer camp. Set in 1968, this historical fiction novel explores family dynamics and the importance of sisterhood.
15. Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson (Middle Grade)
In powerfully emotional poetry, Woodson tells the story of her childhood and what it was like to grow up Black in the 1960s and 70s. This novel-in-verse won the National Book Award and the Coretta Scott King Award.
16. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor (Middle Grade)
Between the depression and threats from the night riders, the Logan family has had a tough year. Cassie doesn’t see why her family’s land is so important, but as she becomes more aware of the way their white neighbours treat them, she soon comes to understand that the family’s strength comes from having their own place in the world. This book tackles the ugly reality of racism in the deep south from the perspective of a precocious nine-year-old. It can be hard to stomach at times, but I think that just makes it more important.
17. Zora and Me by Victoria Bond & T.R. Simon (Middle Grade)
Part historical fiction and part small-town mystery, this fictional imagining of Zora Neale Hurston’s early days sees the author as a young girl, exercising her skills as a storyteller. When one of Zora’s tales seems to come true and a man winds up dead, she and her friend Carrie find that things in their little town are not as peaceful as they appear.
18. Blended by Sharon M. Draper (Middle Grade)
Every since her parents’ divorce, Isabella has felt torn in two. Two houses, two families, two races. Switching between her parents, also means switching between two different identities. How can she ever feel whole when she’s constantly split in half? This book examines the life of a biracial girl, and doesn’t shy away from addressing exoticism and the (PG) fetishisation of mixed-race people.
19. Black Enough: Stories of Being Young and Black in America edited by Ibi Zoboi (Young Adult)
This contemporary anthology delves into the many-faceted lives of Black teens in the United States. Popular authors from a wide variety of backgrounds have contributed their voices to show that being young and Black in America is not just one singular experience, but a constellation.
20. The Parker Inheritance by Varian Johnson (Middle Grade)
A hidden letter and a summer mystery are what await Candace when she pokes through an old box in the attic. With the help of her neighbour, Brandon, she deciphers the letter’s clues in the hopes of discovering a forgotten fortune. This book is perfect for readers who like a good puzzle.

The Red Spider ?
Love this one :)
The Red Spider, as named by a lovely commenter on Ao3, is the first part of a series (also - quite aptly - named by the same commenter), 101 Ways To Fuck Up: A Guide By Ron Weasley . It's a total AU of Harry Potter in the vein of the Spiderman/Marvel mythos, wherin Ron is a loosely-converted Peter Parker's Spiderman, Hermione will be eventually... a very specific love interest, Harry is the childhood best friend he'll be distant from for a bit but reconnect with later, and Millicent Bulstrode, of all people, is the loosely-connected Harry Osborn-but-not-really expy, because her dad, The Strongman, is Ron's Green Goblin. Ron's got an Uncle Bill(ius, which is pretty close to Ben >:) ) and Ron's dad works for Tom Riddle Jr, the owner of a large experimental tech/chemistry/biochemistry/whatever it is that week company... sorta like Oscorp.
The premise; Ron goes to an ex-all-mutants school in London called St. Werstan's (Aka St. Martyr's). He's friends with some of his classmates, like Dean and Seamus, and very unfriendly with others, like Malfoy and Zabini. One day Fred (not and George, he didn't know) put a mutant spider in his room that he found in their Dad's car (likely having escaped Oscorp's labs) and the rest, is, well, origin story.
The Red Spider is basically Spidey!Ron's origin story.
And it's not gonna end well :).
A snippet, from the third chapter (the one i've not yet posted);
Professor Binns, like the rest of the teachers, is a mutant. His mutation is... well it was astral projection. He could leave his body, and wander around. Did it really often, too, for most of his career. Said it fit him better than dragging his aging form around when it was tired or hungry or had a broken limb or an illness or any number of other mild inconveniences.  So it's quite fitting, then, that he didn't notice his body had died for about a week. Kept possessing his corpse and wandering around in it. Ron's heard stories from the students that were around when it happened - the stench was unreal. Turns out, a mutation like that, something far more supernatural and surreal than any other mutation Ron knows about, makes you kind of immortal. In a sense. But no matter how interesting Professor Binns seems on the surface, the reality of the situation is much more... droning.
Chapter III is a little light on the action. In fact, this story will be light on the action for the first arc, before Ron starts vigilante-ing it up. Mostly just school brawls behind the cafeteria dumpster. Sorry about that. It's a slow-build kinda situation, here. Also, a slow-burn. Like, very slow. And I am slow to post. So, rather snail-like, all around. Whoops.
I'll have more time to work on it during the summer. This one's one of my favourites <3

This story was incredibly powerful and emotional. Scott’s journey through life from the inception of his mother’s illness to his chaotic life as a club promoter to his ultimate call for change through Charity Water is inspiring. His story truly shows how anybody can change the world for the better. This story was particularly personal to me as for my 18th birthday, I was asking for donations from friends and family in order for me to participate in a school led choir trip to England in which my family could not afford on our own. I decided with the encouragement of my generous mother to donate 30% of the donations I received for my trip to Charity Water. I had never seen this video previously, so being able to see the larger change that I took part in truly tugged at my heart strings. Overall, I ended up raising $925 in which I donated 30% to Charity Water. I had no idea the larger picture of this organization and the community of people giving up birthdays and holidays to give new lives to people around the world.
Aside from the heartfelt story itself, from a journalistic standpoint, the work Scott initially was involved with as being a photojournalist on Dr. Gary Parker’s medical boat is extremely important and the information that Scott provides from Charity Water, such as the geolocations, photos and videos available for donors to see brings immense credibility to the project, especially with the increased skepticism that Americans have in regards to charities and where their money is actually going. That in itself I believe brought immense success to this project. Nowadays, it is difficult for the average person to find solid truth in many news organizations and news sites, as there is just so much information out there that is not always fact checked, so by providing solid and visual proof of the work being done in this charity is so important.
The story is well put together and does the job I believe it was intended to do and makes the viewers feel for these people that they don’t even know, thus inspiring the masses to commit themselves to change. Scott’s story and more importantly his ability of storytelling attributes greatly to that success in my opinion.

Burning (Peter Parker x Reader) Hogwarts AU
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Peter Parker x Fem!Reader
Part five of the Improper series
*Please don’t plagiarize my work, thank you :3*
Summary: Another thing you learn at Hogwarts is that smoke is never good, Peter was standing a little too close to you, and you never know who to trust, and no one is safe.
Warnings: Umm… swearing. Wizard racism? Oh, and Peter being a hot little bitch. Yup.
Words: 3,477
Previous Chapter                                                            Next Chapter
You sat alone on the fur rug in the empty Gryffindor common room, watching the flames in the fireplace flicker and steadily die down, almost melting into the scorched wood. All the others had gone to bed but you stayed, not bothering to check the time as it passed. Today was the end of the first week at Hogwarts, now your fifth year and today you had yet another fight with Peter. It was, as always over something stupid, but that didn’t stop you and him from arguing. The fight was over an article that the Daily Prophet published about spies in Hogwarts and the argument would have gone on for hours if Professor Binns hadn’t forced you two out of the classroom, raising his voice to tell you class was over twenty minutes ago. You had yelled that Peter was wrong. There were no spies in Hogwarts and the Prophet was only doing it to stir up tension. Like we don’t have enough of that already. You think bitterly.
The last flame was blown out by a gust of wind from the open window, grey smoke rising from the fireplace. Peter’s angry face was stuck in your brain no matter how hard you tried to get rid of it. It wasn’t my fault. You think stubbornly. He was the one who kept talking. He provoked me! Your eyes stung, growing watery and you blinked twice to clear them. Wait, I almost never cry. What…
In your deep thoughts, you didn’t notice how the air around you grew dense and hot, almost blistering your skin. Smoke make your eyes water, but it wasn’t coming from the fireplace. Ugly gray clouds were floating into the common room through the open window, curling around the chandelier on the ceiling and drifting closer to the ground as more entered. You frowned and stood up, taking careful steps to avoid stumbling, as the smoke now clouded the room like fog, making it hard to see. Your eyes not only watered but now they burned, the smog growing thicker with every passing second. You stumbled over the corner of a chair, putting a hand over your mouth to stop from coughing and inhaling the smoke. The open window let moonlight stream into the common room but it was stopped short by the ugly smog.
When you reached it, you had half a mind to close the window and ignore what was happening outside. The view of the quidditch field looked normal, if a bit hazy, until you heard shouting and taunts of glee as someone roared “Incendio”. One of the viewing stands burst into flames and toppled over as the midsection gave away. You gasped but only inhaled more smoke, coughing and slapping a hand over your mouth and nose.
The teachers viewing stand was being covered in fire, the tendrils snaking up and swallowing it whole. You yelped and stumbled back when another spell was shot and it exploded on a goal post, flames dancing around the metal ring. Cheering erupted from below, just barely heard over the cracking of wood as another viewing stand came down, smashing on the burned grass.
You ran up the stairs of the boys dorm, throwing the door open so hard it almost broke the hinges. A few boys were jarred awake and stared at you, some muttering curses but most of them stayed asleep, rolling over to face away from you.
A mousy looking blond pulled the covers up to his chest, a pinched expression of annoyance on his face. “Hey, you can’t be in here.”
You payed him no attention and sprinted over to their window, opening it for a better view of the field and your breath caught in your throat. All round you the boys began to make disgusted faces because the smoke drifted in from the common room and the window. From this angle the quidditch field looked even worse, even the grass was ablaze and spreading.
“(Name), what are you doing?”
You whipped around to Peter’s voice, seeing him leaning against a bedpost, waving his hands around in an attempt to clear the smoke.
“The fire-It’s bloody everywhere!” You stutter, rushing to shake the rest of the boys awake. Tear were forcing themselves out of you, a reflex to the ashy air. “O-on the field, and t-the stands-there’s someone down there!”
Your ran your fingers through your disheveled hair, a wild look in your eyes as you shut the window and ran for the stairs to the common room, ready to warn the girls. Peter grabbed your hand and jerked you back, sending you tumbling into him.
“What. Fire?” He asks steadily. At least he tried to sound calm, but the tremble in his voice was there.
“The f-field, it’s- I heard someone yell, a-and-” You doubled over in a coughing fit, your lungs searing hot and blistery. Peter pulled you back up, holding both your wrists with his hand. Your were too close. His fearful and panicked face was just inches from yours and for some stupid reason, you found it hard to think.
“There’s someone on the field?”
You nod once, flushing red when you felt his ragged breaths so close to you. Stop it. I just fought with him earlier today. Now is not the time for this. That snapped you out of your thoughts and you pulled out of his grasp, backing away to the stairs.
“I have to warn the others.” You say, already one foot out. “Peter you have to get them out.”
He just stood there, also red in the face, staring at you with a mystified expression. Your eyebrows furrowed. “NOW!”
Peter jolted out of his trance as you turned and ran to the girls dorm, more confident than before.
“There’s a fire on the quidditch field! Everyone out unless you want to suffocate!”
The girls got up more hurriedly, sensing the true panic in you and sniffing the air, detecting the smoke. The Fat Lady looked overwhelmed when students streamed out of her portrait, meeting a disgruntled Professor Rogers in the hall.
“Everyone follow me!” He yells, turning around and briskly walking in the direction of the courtyard. Professor Romanoff and her Slytherins turned the corner and almost run into Professor Rogers.
“Minerva ordered all teachers to take the students to the courtyard.” She locked eyes with Professor Rogers, her eyes showed utmost shame. “Steve, the Prophet was right.”
Professor Rogers motioned for his students to follow and walked alongside Professor Romanoff as they whispered to each other. You tore to the front, nearest to the two professors, the mention of the Daily Prophet catching your undivided attention.
“-I saw them Steve!”
“Natasha it’s going to be alright. If we can get the kids to safety-”
Professor Romanoff came to a sudden halt and you almost head butted her back. “You have no idea how bad this is!” She hissed, bristling visibly. “At the same time as the fucking Prophet published another one of their rubbish stories? It’s like they knew. They knew it was the right time! When the Ministry finds out they’ll fall the blame on me-”
“Not right now, Natasha.” Professor Rogers whispers urgently, nudging her to keep walking. Professor Romanoff stomps forward even faster than before, muttering things. Both the Slytherins and Gryffindors looked panic stricken, struggling to catch up with the long steps of their heads of houses.
Professor Romanoff barely stepped a foot on the cobblestone of the courtyard when a jet of blue light streaked past her right ear, hitting the stone pillar behind her. It exploded into thousands of pieces, scattering on the floor. Kids shrieked and screamed at the unforeseen explosion. Professor Romanoff and Rogers ducked and drew their wands out of nowhere. Professor Rogers held his arm back to stop his students.
“Stop! Don’t fire!”
Professor Banner sprinted from the courtyard followed by the Ravenclaws.
“They’ve surrounded the land! There’s nowhere to go,” He panted out. “Minerva said to get them to the dungeons.”
Then he ran, his Ravenclaws sprinting after him. Professors Rogers and Romanoff shadowed his actions, hoarding their students with them.
“We’re going to die.” Inigo says hysterically. “The Death Eaters and their kids are gonna kill us.”
“Shut your mouth!” You snap. “The Prophet could be wrong yet.”
“The Prophet is right!” Inigo cries out. “What does it take to get it into your thick head that You-Know-Who’s old followers are recruiting? Traitorous, manky little b-!”
“Shut up Inigo.” Peter barks, appearing at his friend’s side. “She helped get us out of the tower, that’s worth something.”
“I don’t care!” Inigo shrieks, pointing to you. “She’s been helping the Slytherins, I know it! Pull her sleeve up, I’d bet there’s a Dark Mark!”
“Steve, can’t you keep your students under control?” Professor Romanoff seethes through clenched teeth. As soon as she finished her sentence, someone’s cold scream came from down the hall.
“Avada Kedavra!”
Professor Romanoff raised her wand before you could even think to react. “Protego!”
The students scattered like ants being stomped on. You ran to the hoard of Slytherins sprinting to the quidditch field and grabbed Abigail’s hand, pulling her back.
“Don’t go to the field you idiot!” You yell at her, pulling her down another hallway.
“We have to! The Hufflepuffs are cornered there! Stella’s-”
“What?” You shriek. “The field was burning! Why would Stella follow them?”
Another streak of green flew past Abigail’s head. You skidded across the smooth floor, swiveling on your heel. A group of people in black hoods and masks appeared in a burst of dark light, their wands pointed at you.
It was Abigail’s turn to pull at your arm, both of you breaking into a sprint to get outside. “Shit, go back!”
More green light illuminated the corridor as you and Abigail ducked in an attempt to avoid the blast.
“P-Protego!” Abigail burst out, carelessly aiming behind her. The killing spells stopped, shattered by the invisible shield she cast. You raced to the courtyard, people in black cloaks closing in from all sides. What unnerved you the most is they didn’t chase after you. The Death Eaters walked forward slowly, whipping their wand as they wordlessly fired jinxed and curses at running students. A group of staff members and students were standing in a circle in the middle of the courtyard, hurling spells at the advancing Death Eaters. You fired a body bind hex at one of the taller figures. They collapsed to the ground, arms and legs pinned to their sides.
The most powerful Death Eater was dueling Professor Banner and Nurse Maximoff at the same time, flicking their wand in long, lazy movements. With one more spell, he blasted both staff members back, sending their bodies skidding across the floor.
“ENOUGH!” He roared, his voice impossibly deep and fractured by the mask. Death Eaters and students alike stopped fighting in sheer shock. He cackled like an insane asylum patient, unafraid despite having at least twenty wands pointed at him. “I’ve only come to collect the willing. They know who they are.”
You wanted to cruciate him then and there, to end it all now, but you couldn’t.  Do it! Your brain yelled. Do it now! Stop him! Nothing happened for a moment. Everyone was standing there, all had their wands raised, all on high alert. And then- a seventh year boy stepped out of the circle, calmly moving around Professor Rogers like it was nothing. Without hesitation, he stopped at the side of the man who yelled. A dark haired girl standing right next to Professor Romanoff walked forward, ignoring the gasp from the red headed professor. She had her head low, presumably from fear, or maybe humiliation for being called out in front of her head of house.
The powerful Death Eater jabbed his wand under the girl’s chin, forcing her to look up at the betrayal on the faces of her peers.
“There isn’t anything to be ashamed of, child.” The man spoke softly to her but you assumed he was addressing everyone there. He was honeyed and appealing, a dark and dangerously persuasive undertone to him. “Your parents would be proud to know their girl joined the cause.”
“I know of the suffering the Slytherin house had endured,” He boomed, grave and stoic. “My message to you is this. Do not try to earn the trust of the other houses. They aren’t worthy! They aren’t purebloods! They don’t understand the power that you have at your fingertips!”
“Join me,” He says, quieter but even more alluring. “We can rid the world of weakness and dirty blood…together.”
The Death Eater flicks his wand one last time and disappears in a burst of dark magic along with his followers, the boy and the girl who stepped out. Abigail is unable to move but at the same time is shaking next to you. You don’t know if it’s from fear, hurt or shame that her own housemates betrayed the school. Your body is still frozen but the gears of your mind are whirling at impossible speed. You lean closer to her ear.
“Hide,” You whisper, clutching her hand. “Find Erin, Keira and hide.”
She stares at you with wide, horror stricken eyes. “W-Why?”
“The Gryffindors’ll kill you, Abby.” You whisper back, quivering ever so much. The other students were beginning to wake from the terror induced stupor and you were getting jumpy. “He-he took Slytherins. He made you the b-bad guy. Please, please hide.”
She gives you a solemn look and nods before racing off in a random direction.
“Hey-where is she going?” Inigo screeches, preparing to run after Abigail. You grab the edge of his robe and throw him to the ground. The teachers look too occupied with treating hexed students to care.
“Don’t you dare follow her you git!” You spit, your nostrils flaring. Inigo hops up looking murderous. You shrink back on instinct. Oh Merlin, what’ve I done.
“Inigo, stop.”
Peter steps between the two of you like a shield. “The teachers are here. They’ll see you.”
Any forgiveness or good nature you felt for him melted from your heart. You wanted to yell and scream, to punch Peter in his stupidly perfect face but the energy was gone. His words were so heartless, like he forgot all the times you were his friend. The corners of your mouth twitched, preparing to fight back but nothing was said. The same freezing numbness that came when you saw him was heightened, making you shiver despite the abnormally hot night air. You gave him one last miserable look and spun around on your heel, running the same way Abigail went.
For a month now you kept passing the house elves scrubbing away a spray painted message on the castle walls. They varied from the side of those who wanted to join the Death Eaters, to those who said they were going to hunt down all the people who will betray Hogwarts. Some talked of riots and wanting to kick out Half Bloods, and others declared that Slytherin should be cast out of the school. Every time, you hugged the books tighter to your chest and avoided looking at the spray painted notes. Muttering broke out in the crowd surrounding the courtyard as you passed it to get to Professor Xu’s class. You would have kept walking but a loud, collective gasp rippled through the students, seizing your notice.
The crowd became silent as loud coughing echoed across the courtyard. You stepped into the mess, slinking your way around the countless bodies. In the center, wheezing into a white handkerchief, was Professor McGonagall, her face the color of the feathers on a snowy owl. Nurse Maximoff had a reassuring hand on her shoulder while Professor Odinson helped carry heavy suitcases down the steps from the Clock Tower. A tall man with brown, slicked back hair and an overly pointy nose stood stiffly next to them, hands clasped around a piece of parchment.
“Do not fear, children,” The tall man was saying. “Your dear Professor is not in mortal danger. She is, however, sick to the point where her duty as headmistress is an uncalled for obstacle preventing her from attaining health.”
Professor Stark shot the man a glare from where he was standing next to Nurse Maximoff. More muttering ensued, followed by some disgruntled yelled objections. Professor McGonagall raised the hand that held her handkerchief to shut everyone up.
“It’s going to be alright,” She says hoarsely. “My not being headmistress should not stop the school from functioning properly. When the Ministry recommended my… ah, demise, they unanimously chose the same wizard. Headmaster Cordell was more than happy to accept their recommendation and-”
“How come Professor Fury can’t take your place?” Someone in the crowd shouts. Her question sparked a new wave of protest.
“He was Deputy Headmaster! He’s supposed to take over!” A boy’s high pitched voice yells. More shouting from the crowd.
“That’s enough,” The new headmaster projects, his voice so loud the professors all jump, and McGonagall actually winces. “The Ministry has decreed that I am the new headmaster and I assure you the school is in good hands! It is my impression that Hogwarts has gone mad with these petty rivalries between houses, and I plan to end that!”
He drops the sternness for a half smile and a silky, sympathetic tone. “The school’s function will go on as usual, even if your beloved headmistress must go.”
The new headmaster gives Professor Odinson a pointed look. The professor narrows his eyes but picks up the rest of McGonagall’s luggage and begins to trudge through the students who part to make way. Nurse Maximoff’s brows are furrowed but her eyes are glassed over as she leads McGonagall through the path Professor Odinson created. Younger students tug pitifully at McGonagall’s robe, pleading that she stay. Older kids refuse to see her leave, choosing instead to look the other way. You don’t feel tears form in your eyes but another heavy weight is placed on your shoulder, them already being permanently hunched over.
Long after everyone shuffles away, you are still standing there, rooted in place. You stare at the same place where the man stood. She’s not coming back. You tell yourself. McGonagall isn’t going to come back.
“They’ve been sacked.” Keira announces during a trip to the Three Broomsticks, sitting down at the table across from you. “Professor Odinson and Professor Stark are gone.”
Erin chokes on her butterbeer. You slap her on the back to clear her airways. “H-how?” She exclaims, struggling to get the words out.
“The hell you mean, ‘how’?” Keira says furiously, but it wasn’t directed at Erin. “They were kicked out of the school! Dismissed, fired, laid off! The question is why?”
“They were too close to McGonagall,” You offer, drumming your fingers on the table. “That’s the rumor that’s going ‘round, anyway. Headmaster Cordell’s hired a bunch of new guys, and they all look like convicts.”
Abigail sits down on the bar stool next to you, her eyes wide and her stance skittish. “Professor Banner’s been sacked too.” She mumbles, her face a shocked, unmoving mask. “Headmaster Cordell came in to see how he was teaching and started asking so many questions. And Banner-well you know how he has his little episodes. He kinda freaked out, started muttering things. Had to rush out before he exploded.”
She stared at her drink, her eyes growing unfocused. “Banner kept saying the same thing, over and over again. ‘It’s happening again, it’s happening again.’”
“I know what he means,” Michelle says, swirling her butterbeer around the glass. “You remember when Binns was talking about the lawful year in 1995? When Dolores Umbridge took over and made all those changes?”
“But he-he can’t!” Stella blurted. “Come on, let’s stay positive. What is the chance that Headmaster Cordell will actually change everything? Almost none! Sure, he’s creepy, but that means nothing!”
“Fine, we can be positive.” You say, taking a swig of butterbeer. “Let’s talk about something else?”
“Sure,” Michelle deadpans. “How’ve things with Peter been?”
All the girls groan and roll their eyes at the same time while you resist the urge to repeatedly hit your head on the table. Instead, you rested your head in your hand and looked out the window of the Three Broomsticks. You were still hopeful. Yes, it was true at the time. Looking back, you had no idea how badly things would escalate from that point on. And if you did know, maybe you wouldn’t have chosen to stay at Hogwarts another year.
