Devotional Playlist for Lord Hermes
Tumblr media
🪽⚕️
1. Tenet by Heilung, tenet comes from the magic square named SATOR which is a charm used against diseases and bad luck in ancient Rome. I always associated magic with Hermes.
2. Orphic Hymn by Queenie
3. Homeric hymn to Hermes by Petros Tabouris and Eleni Filipa (it’s in Greek)
4. Five magicks by Megadeth and a really great song associated with magic and very ceremonial wizard. (Thrash metal).
5. House of the rising sun by The Animals, it’s hard to say what’s the true meaning and context of the song. It’s about a broken man who has a gambling addiction who is miserable but he resides in the House of The Rising Sun which is vague of what it is exactly a brethol, tavern, gambling ring, etc. who knows but it talks about the provish and those who live in bad situations. Aspect of gambling, traveling, up to no good, is what I think of Hermes but the house of the rising sun works in a way that trying to achieve your dreams either to attain pleasure or wealth it just hopeless and wasteful. The dreams is what Hermes brings to us when sleeping and could be the dreams we want to achieve.
6. Ghost Riders in The Sky by Johnny Cash, about a man who just died but he’s riding on the plains and watching a horde of spirit riders rounding up cattle in the sky. Cattle and herding and being a psychopomp who guides the souls to and from the underworld.

Annotated Alexidas playlist, as inspired by @aeide and @ainulindaelynn. I don't organize or layout when writing or making art most of the time, but I do make playlists to keep myself on track. Beneath cut is explanations, headcanons, justifications. I finally got it to work.
Run Boy Run - Woodkid. Alexios leaving Sparta as a child, running for his life.
Show Him The Ground - Iron and Wine. Boys learning to fight. Rethinking whether learning to fight makes you a strong individual: “Would it make you feel much better to show him the ground?”
Wage Wars Get Rich Die Handsome - The Mountain Goats. My inner mantra while writing Alexios.
Korinth - The Flight. Because Korinth is lifechanging for them.
Ancient Kithera - Kalia Lyraki, Assasins Creed. I like to imagine things playing in the background while they go about their daily lives.
A Spartan Fight - The Flight, Assasin's Creed, Mike Georgiades. Just seems right. I am sure it is not what plays when they meet, but I cannot remember and title wise it makes sense in this order.
Blood Royal - The Mountain Goats. "I remembered you/ I remembered where you come from". Brasidas recognizing who Alexios is, as a Myrinne's son.
How I Get myself Killed - Indigo De Souza. "I need to be kicked/maybe fucked/maybe told I'm in the way./ This is probably how I get myself killed". Brasidas on meeting Alexios. He isnt wrong.
Braid - Perfume Genius. "Secret is braided/ In between". What made me write Braid. I wanted to explore the intimacy I heard in this song.
Brasidas - The Flight, Assasin's Creed, Mike Georgiades. Ya know. I just picture him smiling at Alexios.
Ancient Celebration - Kalia Lyraki, Assasins Creed. More background music. I think they should drink together while this plays, share soft smiles at each other.
Epitrotos & Iambos - Petros Tabouris, Panos Stefos. More background music.
cherubim - serpentwithfeet. I like to think of love and devotion, how they can twine together to make something so strong that it is a bit off-putting (the song being in a minor key). "I get to devote my life to him/I get to sing like the cherubim./ Boy every time I worship you/ My mouth is full of honey". Sure, there is innuendo, I wanted that. But the song is tense, while the lyrics are full of longing and praise. I think that is how Alexios feels about Brasidas. Not me listening on repeat and learning to draw dick for Alexidas.
Procession of the Olympians - Michael Levy. Background music.
An Angry Blade - Iron & Wine. "Who left you so?" and "You're an angry blade and you're brave but you are alone". Brasidas understands what it is to be a soldier, but he sees something in Alexios that he does not often see in other fighting men. He wants Alexios to let it go. It reminds him of Deimos.
A Happy Family - The Flight, Assasins Creed, Mike Georgiades. This is my favorite song on the ost! I wrote about it before, but I love the shift at 2:51. It's like Myrinne's theme, but...wrong? I like to read it as Alexios being unsure if a happy family is possible (I do not play him as forgiving his father, and if I can stand to continue after Amphipolis, he will not spare his sister. I need to play that at least once. Catharsis?). Can also be read as hopeful, determined to make a happy family possible. But I like drama and being sad.
Die 4 You -Perfume Genius. Alexios' devotion, love as something that pushes you offbalance. This a song apparently about erotic asphyxiation , so sure, maybe it's that too. I don't know.
Safe with Me - Soap&Skin. "No love can be safe with me". Alexios worries about whether it is possible to be good for a partner in a relationship. Whether he, with his job as a mistios and the cult at his back, can be safe for Brasidas. If he had a therapist, he’d probably worry about being too traumatized or something of the sort. But unfortunately, he only has Barnabas (who tries his best).
My Boy (Twin Fantasy) - Car Seat Headrest. "My boy/we don't see each other that much/ It'll take some time/ But sometime down the line/ We won't be alone". Alexidas pining. You know. When you are gay and long distance. As one does.
Valley of the Two Kings - The Flight. Sparta stuff.
Alan - Perfume Genius. GUYS. GUYS. GUYS. This is it. THIS is what I think a good relationship looks like. This is everything I love about being in love. "Did you notice/ We sleep though the night./ Did you notice babe?/ Everything's all right". The joy and surprise of being queer and safe with someone you love. The utter shock at everything being ok. Feeling comfortable in your own skin. (Also I SAW Perfume Genius live and SAW Alan and hooo boy he has nice piano hands, good finger posture. I was entranced. I stared throught he strobe light at his fingers. It freaked out my ex. I do not have good finger posture. I get it, Mike Hadras. Your boyfriend is amazing. )
bless ur heart -serpentwithfeet. Arguably my favorite love song. Having a love that inspires others, that gives each other strength. Knowing you can be safe in that love? Alexios and Brasidas for each other. "Boy, whoever reads about how much I adore you/ I hope my words bring them something new". Being open about your love, having it become something that is passed on. Yeah. That’s some good shit.
Something to Cry About - Daniel Rogers, Ensemble de Organographia. Background music, somewhat unsettling. As Herodotos tells you constantly: There is much to do, and many unknowns on the horizon.
Two Men In Love - The Irrepressibles. "Will you lay down your armor/ and be with me forever?". Well? Is that something they can ask of each other? Is love stronger than duty? Can you put both together?
Forget About - Sibyelle Baiar. "You make me forget about/Past and pain". I think they are an island to each other. I think they are healing for each other. “You do me good”.
Sparta- The Flight. Background music again. Good stuff.
Wood Boy- serpentwithfeet. Alexios' thinking about bottoming. That’s it.
Coast - Shannon Lay. OH wow, I have many thoughts about this song. I listen to this and picture Alexios thinking about how Deimos fought Brasidas at Pylos. "She came for you/ But now you're gone and I'm afraid for you, my friend". Alexios (and I) get weird about the sea: "Darling I am telling you I belong by the sea" for some reason (this is a reoccurring theme in my headcanons). He did not belong by the sea, he belonged by Brasidas side, but here we are. We are stuck at the coast.
Bounty - Tiny Ruins. "Hey, I'm on the run/ Didn't I say I go where I want?" First verse is Alexios as a mistios. "Yeah, You're a wanted man/There's a bounty that keeps us/hand in hand". AU where Brasidas lives and also becomes a mistios.
Heal - Soap&Skin. I don't know, they talk out their traumas and get better together? "Do we heal?" And then they do get better! “Fear used to be near here/ But won’t be anymore/ I have no fear”.
Lost in the Dark Forest of Questioning- Michael Levy. Background music that makes me think they get lost in thought together. Laying with his head in his lap, playing with each other’s hair, eating together.
Age of Kings - The Mountain Goats. "Held you in my arms for the first time that day/ felt like god's anointed when you didn't push me away./Gold light shining on so many things/in the age of kings". Brasidas thinking of the first time he sleeps with Alexios. I think it means a lot to be mutually liked, to not have to portray Spartan ideals with a lover. Also Sparta has two kings, so...age of kings.
Historiography - The Mountain Goats. Loving despite everything going on. Cherishing time together. Not remembering all the details because you are together and you are in love and the world melts down into just the two of you.
The Woods - Daughter. Brasidas thinking about Alexios and his sister.
The Shores of Megaris- The Flight. Yup. Game music.

Orphic hymn to Zeus
youtube
Music is a fundamental aspect aspect in my religious practice, I love it & nothing can replace the feeling that may be the gods are happy when I play their hymns for them (I create playlists). I always start with music.
And I love above all the feeling it gives, a boost and a link to this ancient culture and deities...
I will never forget the Homeric Hymn to Hermès I learn to prononce in greek, nor this song I associate with Hermès :
youtube
And I did'nt mention Petros Tabouris, my beloved Daemonia Nymphe..the Hymn to Apollo, to Hestia...

This Anne Carson adaptation is so vibrant; dare I say verdant? I read it again and again and it’s so evocative I come back to it because it puts me on Mt. Kithairon, beneath a grove of trees, hearing drumbeats, seeing all of these greens, languid like a big cat but ready to erupt into frenzy if I feel like it. I can smell the piney resinous wet sap and crushed mint, see the droplets of water on grass and I know exactly that shade ‘yearning green’. And the next few lines: “green of the rough caress of ritual, green undaunted by reason or delirium…” I know those greens. Maybe you know those greens too. Easily my favorite book I read this year. Just btw if you get into this stuff too, Petros Tabouris composed an album of songs to accompany the play, called Euripides’ Bacchae and it’s perfect. #You can find it on Spotify. #annecarson #euripides #bakkhai #dionysus #petrostabouris #greekmythology

Anthesteria playlist!
Kala Anthesteria! For those who don’t know, Anthesteria was a three-day festival of Dionysus in Athens that celebrates the opening of new wine. Its name means “Flower Festival,” and it was also a festival of the dead. Dionysus would lead the dead up from Hades to mingle with the living for three days. Anthesteria also involved heiros gamos, a sacred marriage, between Dionysus and the priestess-queen of Athens. It’s this weekend! So I’ve got a playlist:
1. "Dionysos Entrance - Prologue" by the Petros Tabouris Ensemble: This group produces Ancient Greek music with authentic instruments, and this is the opening track to the Bacchae album. It sounds so chaotic and anticipatory, perfect for the arrival of the Mad God.
2. "The House of Hades" by Darren Korb, from Hades: The Hades stuff is on here to honor the spirits of the dead at Anthesteria, but also because I'm currently obsessed with this game. This is one of my favorite tracks.
3. "Starfall" by Two Steps From Hell: This particular piece has a lot of mythic majesty to it. I associate it with Ancient Greek creation stories, the emanation of the universe and the rise of the Olympian gods.
4. "To Athena" by the Petros Tabouris Ensemble: There isn't really any Anthesteria-related reason for this to be on here, except that it's an Athenian festival, but I really love this piece. It is so pretty.
5. "Ritual" by Adam Hurst: This is one of my favorite pieces of music that Spotify has randomly delivered to me. It is quiet and mystical, and evokes nocturnal rituals and a repetitive, cyclical dance.
6. "Out of Tartarus" by Darren Korb, from Hades: Another one of my absolute favorite tracks from this game.
7. "Luna Prolog" by Faun: This is just a pretty interlude that makes me think of moonlit fields and forests. It's kind of Arcadia-ish.
8. "Moonfolk" by Adrian von Zielger: I can see nymphs dancing to this, and probably ghosts as well.
9. "Moon" by OMNIA: This is probably one of my new favorite pieces of pagan music, and I associate it with the Muses singing and dancing on Parnassus.
10. "Running with the Wolves" by AURORA, from WolfWalkers: This isn't really Anthesteria-related, but it's about a positive embrace of wildness and freedom. It's also a damn good song!
11. "Creature of the Wood" by Heather Alexander: A satyr singing to a young woman to join him in the woods. It's a tempting proposition. Even though this is a woman's voice singing, the satyr's raw virility is palpable.
12. "Magban Alvó" by The Moon and the Nightspirit: The title means "The Sleeping Seed," and it's about a godlike power that lies dormant within the natural world rising to the surface. Isn't that what Anthesteria is about? It's mid-Feburary, the world will wake up soon, and the ecstatic god and his shades come to the surface.
13. "Underground" by Lindsey Stirling: From its title, I associate this song with katabasis. I also associate it with starry skies on foggy moonlit nights, because I danced to it on such a night once and that was a cool experience.
14. "Blood Moon" by Adam Hurst: I don't know why I put so much lunar stuff on this playlist for a festival that doesn't fall across the full moon, but this piece also gives me Mysteries-vibes.
15. "Pegasus" by Two Steps From Hell: Pegasus was my entry point into Greek mythology and everything that followed, so I have Pegasus to thank for my relationship to the gods. Listening to this brings me right back to my childhood, and my yearning to ride Pegasus over a mythical Greece.
16. "From Olympus" by Darren Korb, from Hades: Patroclus' theme. It's beautiful and melancholy; it sounds like a lament. And yet it's also a welcome moment of peace in the endless battle of Elysium.
17. "Achilles Come Down" by Gang of Youths: This is here because I'm also currently obsessed with The Song of Achilles. It speaks for itself. I cannot listen to it without crying.
18. "Darkside" by Lindsey Stirling: I don't have a reason for this to be here beyond that it's one of my favorite Lindsey Stirling pieces.
19. "Wretched Shades" by Darren Korb, from Hades: I like how it starts slow and then picks up, first being Sisyphus' theme, and then the short battle theme that plays when you open an infernal trove.
20. "Cicatrices" by Guilhem Desq: Another blessing from Spotify's random algorithms. I love this piece. It's actually less frenzied-Dionysian than "Visions" from the same album, but it reminds me of labyrinths and the path towards enlightenment.
21. "Stramonium" by Trobar de Morte: The title refers to jimson weed, which is a hallucinogen used for visionary purposes. I think the relevance of drug-induced mystical experiences is apparent!
22. “Dionysus” by Jocelyn Pook: An absolutely gorgeous piece, originally composed for the orgy scene in Eyes Wide Shut, but not actually used. Pook heard “masked orgy” and got precisely the right idea! But I’m actually glad it wasn’t used for that scene, because this piece has such a profound spiritual character. I can feel Dionysus seep into my bones when I hear this!
23-25. Dionysus, Act I by Dead Can Dance: I love this album. It manages to perfectly capture the essence of Dionysus in all his aspects. It doesn’t sound human. It sounds like it came straight out of an ancient Arcadian forest, like its instruments are played by satyrs and its chanting comes from the mouths of Maenads. It is primal, ecstatic, ritualistic, arcane. Why bother to explain Dionysus to people when I could just have them listen to this album? I put only half of it on here to keep the list a manageable length.
26. "The Cult of Dionysus" by The Orion Experience: Duh!
