**URGENT** HELP SAVE THE USGS BEE LAB!
PLEASE circulate this as widely as possible, as soon as possible.
Hi all, you may not know me but I am a native bee researcher in the eastern US. People like me work to study and protect the 3600 species of native bees in North America, many of which are in severe decline.
We just received devastating news, that unfortunately was not surprising. The Trump administration's proposed 2026 budget is set to defund most of the ecological research happening at the USGS, and that includes zeroing out the budget for the USGS Native Bee Inventory & Monitoring Lab.
Don't know them? Maybe you've seen stunning photos like this:
Tumblr media
These gorgeous and evocative focus-stacked photos of native bees on black backgrounds - all of which are public domain - come from the USGS Bee Lab (here's their Flickr). Through these, they've helped bring the beauty and importance of native bees to the public's attention. Hundreds if not thousands of news articles, videos, and publications use these photos.
But that is just one tiny slice of what the USGS Bee Lab does for pollinator conservation. Its primary role is much bigger; they provide technical support, research collaborations, and financial & grant partnerships to federal and state agencies, academic institutions and researchers, and much more, so we can study, manage, and protect North America's wild pollinators. They conduct research of their own that has led to species rediscoveries, and produce invaluable resources that have greatly advanced our understanding of wild bees and our approaches to studying and conserving them. They also provide the essential and irreplaceable service of bee identification. For those who don't know, identifying bees is hard. Sometimes Really Hard. And this lab is one of just a handful of places in the entire country who can identify some of the toughest groups of bees, and who sit on the forefront of breakthroughs on taxonomy and identification that the rest of us in this field rely on. Without this service, agencies and researchers trying to survey and monitor bees in order to track population declines, manage land, and get policy changed are stuck with a lot of nameless bees, severely limiting the usefulness of that data.
Tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of bee specimens pass through this lab annually, plus the thousands in permanent storage, from long-term monitoring efforts by state and federal agencies, and researchers like myself. They operate at a greater capacity than basically any other institution doing this kind of work. Few if any bee researchers in the eastern US, or even the country, have not benefitted from this lab's work, and those benefits are passed on to you through being able to protect pollinators and the services they provide both in agriculture and ecosystems.
This lab is headed up by scientist Sam Droege, who has dedicated decades of his life to this cause, and whom I consider not just a research partner but, humbly, a friend. I am utterly indebted to him for helping me get my start in this field, and for the support and kindness he has shown me and every other young professional who is passionate about pollinators. The Lab operates with an insanely small budget already, and a very limited staff, yet the impact they have is exponentially outsized. Losing the USGS Bee Lab would be a devastating blow to pollinator conservation in this country, at a time when native bee species are sitting on the precipice, and sustainable agriculture is non-negotiable for our future.
You can read more about the Bee Lab here. The Lab is not well-publicized, but it's a lifeline for the many dedicated people who work to try and protect pollinators and the environment at large.
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Sam Droege has sent out a request for help, and has encouraged us to post on social media. This is what he wants you to do to help us save the Bee Lab.
This is verbatim:
What is Happening: ·       The USGS Bee Lab is at risk of being permanently closed due to cuts in the 2026 Federal Budget and looming federal RIF’s ·       Specifically, the Ecosystem Mission Area (EMA) budget, which funds the USGS Bee Lab and the Eastern Ecological Science center has been zeroed out ·       Thousands of layoffs to hit Interior, National Parks imminently - Government Executive What you can do ·       Write to your representatives, the White House, and the Department of the Interior that they should restore the funding for the USGS Bee Lab ·       Send digital or physical letters, write emails, post to social media What you should be highlighting: ·       Personal anecdotes about how the Bee Lab has impacted you or your organization ·       How important the research the Bee Lab is conducting is to your state Contact Information: 1.      Representatives: Find Your Representative | house.gov 2.      Senators: U.S. Senate: Contacting U.S. Senators 3.      White House: Contact Us – The White House 4.      Interior: [email protected] Send a copy of the letter to [email protected] Pass this email around.  Post your response to social media
IT'S OK if you are not a scientist and have not directly interacted with the Bee Lab. Have you seen the lab's photos? Are you concerned about native pollinator declines? Are you aware of any pollinator conservation initiatives or policies in your own state - those almost certainly have drawn, directly or indirectly, from work the Lab has done. Speak about American food production and agriculture, how the Lab's research and collaborations are essential to safeguarding pollination services (this might help reach across the aisle).
Sam urges that these letters, emails, phone calls, etc, must happen quickly - within the next couple days. This information went out on May 8th and that is the day I am posting this. So please, don't wait.
If 'save the bees' has ever meant anything to you, this is the agency that is playing one of the biggest roles in this country in making that happen. Please, contact your representatives, and pass this call to action along however you can. Thank you.

Unity's behavior is embarrassingly greedy. Clearly trying to brute force their way into skimming revenue from every mobile game on the market -> pushing their adware onto every piece of software. It's been really disheartening to see every game development software company demand exponentially more profit the past few years. Especially since it comes at the expense of scaring away blossoming developers...
If you haven't learned to make games, but plan to - use something open source like GODOT, or at least an old version of RPG maker with a one-time purchase of a license.
If the owner of the IDE you're using would be legally within their rights to do what Unity is doing now you should assume that they will do it eventually too.

its really weird that i keep bringing steven universe up like at this rate i'm gonna make people believe i used to be a steven universe superfan but i swear i'm not i actually mostly only knew of it through osmosis its just. steven universe and dragon age exist on eerily similar planes both on a writer's and consumer's scale so it just tends to come up a lot when i think about the state of fandom and death of the author and whatever you get it .
anyways remember when the fanbase for steven universe (primarily on tumblr) became inundated with discourse and was littered with teenagers overreacting to character flaws and using them to apply malicious intent to the creators and branding it as a form of sociopolitical propaganda against themselves. and then the showrunners seeing this very small pocket of fans demanding complete ideological purity from a cartoon actually for some very odd reason took their demands seriously and tried to rewrite the show's core narrative and characters to fit this impossible standard until the later seasons became so messy and narratively incoherent that it became obvious even to that same small pocket of fans that they were being pandered to
so anyways dragon age veilguard right

So, the Marvelous CEO stepped down.
Let's talk about that!
Tumblr media
❕This post contains speculative discussion covering: Marvelous Entertainment, Rune Factory, Story of Seasons, and touches on other IPs in the Marvelous folio. Also some fiscal discussion! It might be boring 😅...❕
Following the money
For those unaware, Marvelous isn't doing so well fiscally. In response to a (consistently) poor earnings report from 2024, the current Marvelous CEO Sato Suminobu announced his retirement from the position to elevate Shinichi Terui (an executive director) in his place.
The reasoning for the poor fiscal reporting was cited as "too few core IP releases and low sales".
What does that mean for the future? Well, while this decision focuses on 2024's performance, let's first take a bit to recap the first-time releases from 2019 to now:
January 18, 2019: Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes
June 3, 2019: Dead or School
June 9, 2019: Senran Kagura: Peach Ball
July 18, 2019: WACCA
September 13, 2019: Daemon x Machina
October 17, 2019: Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town
February 6, 2020: Granblue Fantasy: Versus
February 25, 2020: Rune Factory 4 Special
August 25, 2020: Kandagawa Jet Girls
November 5, 2020: Shadowverse: Champion's Battle
November 10, 2020: Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin
February 25, 2021: Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town
May 20, 2021: Rune Factory 5
(Almost a year later!) May 19, 2022: Deadcraft
October 17, 2022: Potionomics
November 2, 2022: Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom
January 26, 2023: Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life
March 2, 2023: Rune Factory 3 Special
June 1, 2023: Loop8: Summer of Gods
October 3, 2023: Silent Hope
November 3, 2023: Fashion Dreamer
November 9, 2023: Cuisineer
(Almost a year later, again!) November 1, 2024: Farmagia
Dry Spells
From 2019 to 2024, 23 titles (please correct me if I missed any!) were delivered. 2022 and 2024 were undoubtedly fiscally dry periods, with one-year periods between releases.
Of the released titles in this period, 10 were from more notorious series; and 6 of those were from the company's self-described Flagship IPs (3 from Story of Seasons and Rune Factory respectively)!
Despite Rune Factory and Story of Seasons being flagship IPs, over half of the games (4/6) released 2019-2024 were remakes or remasters of previous titles (Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town, Rune Factory 4 Special, Rune Factory 3 Special, and Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life), leaving only 2 titles as standalone, new mainline entries in their respective series. Oh, and there was Doraemon too, I guess.
Even with the massive sales seen - with Pioneers of Olive Town being the fastest selling XSEED published title ever and Rune Factory 5 topping 500,000 units sold worldwide after an unprecedented comeback - the games still massively under-performed at launch. The backlash was so strong for Olive Town that the producer (Dai Takemura) was run off his social media platforms and formally apologized for the poor launch. Rune Factory 5 also suffered during the Japanese launch, garnering criticisms from Japanese and North American fans alike amid celebrations of the series' return. This left fans in each space wondering what their favorite series would look like after such rocky starts on the new Nintendo Switch hardware.
The Future, Sprouting
Despite the struggles and setbacks, and nothing to really "make it rain", the flagship series are continuing to grow with 2 new additions to Story of Seasons - a cross-play online multiplayer title, and the next mainline game (purportedly the 30th anniversary entry) - and 2 new Rune Factory games - with entry 6 in development, and Guardians of Azuma releasing in May 2025.
These games are really going to have to do something outstanding to make up for the broken trust of their fans. But with a company struggling with its financials, there's always going to be a tug of war between satisfying fans and generating revenue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is where speculative analysis on my part comes in.
Flexible and Mobile
Current market trends point towards more open-world, cel-shaded style games for mobile (ala Hoyoverse games, Wuthering Waves notably). And the Nintendo Switch is, after all, a glorified touchscreen tablet. It's not lost on fans that there's something going on in the background regarding the games' development, and how eerily alike they are in visuals into some of the bigger, heavy hitting and grossing mobile titles out there.
The style on its own is simplistic, colorful, and warm. It's also very fast to develop and refine - no overly complicated textures or super granular details. The art direction also makes it lighter than other games which have many materials or polygons. It just works.
However, that can point to speculation around development; whether the studio is trying to streamline into shorter times...or is headed in a mobile direction. Let's take a look at some recently released screenshots from Guardians of Azuma.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are elements of UI design displayed here that would feel right at home on a device held in one's hands, and not just with controllers in palms! Make no mistake, mobile is not an insult here. In fact, mobile may be just the direction these series need in order to sustain themselves in the current market era. Mobile gaming currently accounts for (roughly) 110 billion USD annually, across the globe! Even indies like Stardew Valley can see sizeable mobile market gains from concurrent releases on app stores.
It also wouldn't be the first time either series appeared on mobile. A company with as long a history and staying power as Marvelous would surely see no small number of players and a steady revenue for Story of Seasons and Rune Factory by tapping back into that market. Perhaps we're due to see things sprout on that platform soon?
(What happened to that in-development Story of Seasons Mobile title, anyway...?)

From past responses you clearly have some experience with the console cert process. I was wondering: why do so few games offer cross platform play? Does the cert process become disproportionately more difficult when communicating to other systems becomes involved? Or is it just a difficult feature from a purely engineering pov? Thank you!
There are two major groups of hurdles to crossplay - technical and political. Both of these issues were primarily ironed out by Epic in late 2018, and then they opened up the doors for everybody else by releasing their set of crossplay tools and tech to the public for free.
Tumblr media
On the technical side, the various walled garden networks - PSN, XBL, Nintendo Online - each have their own set of protocols, ports, technology, etc. They do not talk to each other or transfer information in the same way. There's a good reason for this - they weren't built by the same people or using the same technology, so their internal workings are all different. In order to solve this, the any third party developer needs to build a system that can take data from any supported service and translate it in real time so all players on other platforms understand what's happening in the game. This requires a fairly hefty engineering effort.
Tumblr media
On the political side, console platform networks are walled gardens that generate a lot of revenue for the platforms. Every sale within that walled garden typically earns the platform owner a 30% cut. This is why they can afford to sell game consoles at a loss, they hope to make it back from their users. Allowing other players on other platforms to play with their users takes away from their exclusivity. This attitude permeates their certification rules, which are then enforced on all third party developers. Even now that crossplay is allowed, there are a lot of rules in place about things like communication between platforms (e.g. Rocket League was not allowed to let Playstation players communicate with PC players because of potential content ratings).
Tumblr media
In 2018, Epic pushed to allow crossplay for their lifestyle game juggernaut Fortnite. Microsoft had already been dabbling in that arena by allowing Xbox to play with PC players (since most players ran on Windows anyway, so they were both Microsoft platforms), but Sony refused. Epic smoothed this over by paying Sony a significant sum of money to 'make up for lost revenue' and developing their own tools and technology to handle the technical issues of allowing crossplay. Sony begrudgingly agreed, so Fortnite went crossplay. Then, in typical fashion, Epic released their entire suite of crossplay tools to the public for free. Games like Dauntless and Rocket League soon followed to crossplay, and by 2019 Sony had changed their stance to accept crossplay.

OUR KICKSTARTER IS LIVE!!!
youtube
Aurascope is a 2D indie platformer inspired by the Super Mario series, but if you take the movement to a whole new level the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog!
We've been developing this game for 5 years, and now it's time for you to help us get it fully funded! You can support it on Kickstarter, wishlist and play our demo on Steam or itch.io, and follow us here, our official website, Bluesky! You can also join our Discord!
(we also have a twitter but im the tumblr guy on the team im not linking that, you can find it if you're interested)
If you want to know more about the game, I'll go into depth (and notably be less social media manager-y about it) under the cut! Otherwise, have a good day, and at least keep us in mind!
HAHA YOU CLICKED UNDER THE CUT I CAN DROP THE SOCIAL MEDIA SPEAK AND BE AUTISTIC
Hi! I'm Chao, and on top of being the only guy on the team with an active tumblr, I'm alsooo one of two main writers! Go thunk.
Aurascope means a lot to me, and I'm definitely going to use this chance to just... GUSH ABOUT IT. I can't exactly provide high quality marketing images because this is just me being unabashedly autistic about something I love, but if you're this deep in, I don't think you care.
SO! Aurascope. Like I alluded to earlier, one of the best defining parts of the game is it's movement. IT'S MOVEMENT IS SEXY AS SHIT TO PUT IT LIGHTLY. We have working time trial systems, and if you look at them, you can see just how FUCKING IN DEPTH THIS SHIT GETS!!!! It's just. FUCK!!! The lead dev put so much care into making sure the act of getting to places feels fun even if there's no platforming!
BUT THE LEVEL DESIGN IS ALSO INCREDIBLY FUCKING TIGHT??? Like. Okay. It took us so long to come up with the first stage's second mission, long enough for it to be a meme in the community discord. BUT IT FEELS SO GOOD. And the rest of the levels in the demo echo the sentiment; everything is so tightly designed that it's just AMAZINGGG AAA
Okay and to toot my own horn here: the writing. Not all of what me and my co-writer is implemented yet, but what is is INCREDIBLY FUNNY. It's not tailored to tumblr comedy or nothing it's just. Funny cuz it's funny. OH AND WE'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO PUT QUEER RELATIONSHIPS AND CONTENT INTO THE FULL GAME!!! It's gonna be fucking peak
Okay im gonna cut myself off here cuz i need to post this sometime in the next century BUT I LOVE THE GAME AND IF YOU READ THIS FAR CLEARLY YOU'RE INTERESTED. SO GO CHECK OUT ALL THE STUFF AND PLAY THE DEMO AND IF YOU LIKE IT PLEDGE TO THE KICKSTARTER!!! WE'RE GONNA GET THIS SHIT DONE
