Today is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada. Why today? Because 35 years ago, a gunman decided to go on a killing spree at Polytechnique (engineering school in Montreal) and killed 14 young women simply because they were women. An antifeminist atrocity, all because a man blamed his own lacking on women and feminists.

35 years is a long time and yet… With the hyper masculine influencers gaining more and more followers, with a rapist becoming the “leader of the free world” along so many other things, feels like society has barely evolved…

Napoléon V and his entourage went to the Grand Bal de l'X, organised by the École Polytechnique to celebrate the end of their year of study. The ball took place at the Opéra Garnier, and featured a number of performances including dances, fencing, a choir and many other distinguished ceremonies. It's a not-to-be-missed event for young students. During the evening, Oliver approached his friend Napoléon V to officially ask for his sister Hortense's hand in marriage. The Emperor agreed to make the engagement official.

POLYTECHNIQUE (2009)

This is about a mass shooting event that took place in Montreal, Canada, in 1989.  Hence, it’s more of a drama than a horror movie, but it relies on horror movie techniques.  Also, the general thrust of the movie is the horror of existence and the violence that we allow to continue unabated!

We start off with Killer, a nameless dude, a seemingly alienated young man with a rifle.  He prepares his manifesto, mostly about his hatred of women.  “I have decided to send the feminists, who have always ruined my wife, to their maker.”  He continues along this line, blaming women for his own failures in life.  He wraps his rifle in a plastic bag and leaves.

We next meet Valerie and Stephanie.  They are engineering students.  Valerie prepares for an interview for a mechanical engineering internship.  They head to campus.  We also meet Jean-Francois, just a dude, another student.  Valerie goes to her interview, and the male interviewer says, “Women usually go for civil engineering.  It’s easier.”  Valerie says that “it’s always been my dream to work in aeronautics.”  The man says, “I meant easier for raising a family.”  Afterwards Valeries goes to the bathroom and has to fight back sobs.  (Yet, in the killer’s mind, her life is so much easier than his.) 

We see life on campus, as students gather in common areas and study and talk and listen to “The Safety Dance” (1982).  Jean-Francois borrows Valerie’s notes and goes to copy them.  He looks at a copy of the panting “Guernica” (1937), a meditation upon the horrors of war.  The killer is there.  He sits in his car for a bit and finishes his manifesto.  He heads to the common area and watches as Valerie, Stephanie, and Jean-Francois head to class.  He stands outside the door and removes his rifle from the plastic bag and loads a cartridge.  He walks into the classroom and fires a bullet into the air.  He commands the men and woman to split up, and then he tells all the men to leave.  Jean-Francois tries to sneak up on the killer, but the man sees him and points his rifle at him.  Jean-Francois leaves.  He runs a long way to a security guard and tells the man to call the police. 

The killer leaves the classroom and returns to the common area.  He begins to fire at students, by which I mean, fire at women.  He shoots women standing by the copy machines.  Jean-Francois, just a normal dude, sneaks back to the classroom.  He enters to see that all of the woman have been shot.  The killer goes to another common area and shoots more people.  Two young women try to hide behind a cabinet.  They hold each other, and he shoots them.  Jean-Francois comes across a wounded women by the copy machines.  He leaves to find help.  The killer shoots a woman in an office as she tries to run away.  Jean-Francois gets some bandages to try to treat the wounded woman by the copiers, but he sees that she’s losing a lot of blood.  He runs to find help, and he runs straight into a corridor where the killer is shooting at a woman.  Jean-Francois stumbles into a room where some dudes are just hanging out and drinking beer, because they have no idea what’s happening.

We jump forward in time.  Jean-Francois leaves his little apartment and goes to visit his mother.  On the way back home he stops his car and vomits by the side of the road.  Later, he parks his car by the side of a lake and kills himself by venting the exhaust into the car.

We move back to the shooting, when the killer is splitting up the men and women in the classroom.  We move in close on Valerie’s face.  The killer tells the woman, “You’re a bunch of feminists.  I hate feminists.”  One woman says, “It’s not true.  We’re not feminists.  We’ve never fought-“ but then he shoots the women.  The women fall to the ground.  Later, we see that Valerie is alive.  She’s been shot in the leg and it looks like a bullet grazed her head.  She tells Stephanie that she’s going to get help.  She leaves the classroom and sneaks back to the common area, but she sees the killer there.  She flees back to the classroom and tells Stephanie that they have to play dead because he’s coming back.  They hear the door open, but we see that it’s only Jean-Francois.  Valerie is eventually evacuated by emergency workers.  Jean-Francois tells her, “I should have stayed.”  She says, “It’s not your fault.”  Jean-Francois gets to go back home on a bus. 

We move forward in time.  Valerie lives with her boyfriend and has morning sickness.  She goes to work, as a mechanical engineer, and fights for attention from the boss as he focuses on a male student.  She sits on the toilet with a pregnancy test.  Afterwards, Valerie sits in a park and writes a letter to the killer’s mother.  We see the killer’s final moments in the college.  He walks into a classroom and shoots a woman who is giving a lecture.  He shoots other women trying to hide beneath their desks.  He sits in the front of the class and shoots himself in the head.  His blood mingles with the blood of a dead woman.  We see Valerie waking up in the hospital with her parents sleeping next to her.  She goes through physical therapy.  In the present, Valerie says, “If I have a boy, I’ll teach him how to love.  If I have a girl, I’ll tell her that the world is hers.”

So, “Valerie” and “Jean-Francois” weren’t real, but they do represent those who did experience this event.  This really happened.  Some guy walked through a college and killed woman because they were women.  As a movie, this is good, a well-crafted portrayal of a horror.  The killer is flat and emotionless.  His physical acting delivers weight to the “gunshots,” along with the sound effects of the bullets.  The film doesn’t dwell on the physical aftereffects of the violence, usually hiding victims behind items of furniture.  Even when we do see a victim, such as the woman by the copier, the director (Dennis Villeneuve, lately of “Dune” (2021) and “Dune: Part Two” (2024) fame) choose in film in black and white, so as to dull the sight of blood.  The film is sensitive about the psychic wounds that linger.  Jean-Francois is haunted, and he commits suicide.  Valerie appears frustrated and isolated, but she resolves to get on her wife.  She finds joy.  There’s no respite for the rest of us, who have to live in a world where movies like this (starting as early as “Targets” (1968)) have become a genre unto themselves.

Born in October 26, 1964, he is a Canadian mass murderer from Montreal, Quebec.
