Among the many, many things I hate about the Loki series there is the fact Loki is so unbearably sad all the time. He feels out of sorts, out of place, out of chances and ultimately out of hopes from beginning to end. He’s suffering the whole damn time, trying to keep it together by frayed ends and no one seems to see how utterly tragic this is. I mean, people who say we OG!Loki fans don’t like to see him happy, wtf??? When in the series did he seem happy to you? (don’t answer, though, I read your reasonings and all are utter madness).

I mean, OOC aside (that’s another can of worms that was discussed elsewhere), he seems so lost. From beginning to end. The only moment he seems to have regained a tiny bit of autonomy... no, there isn’t a moment like that at all. He’s always forced by circumstances, he’s at the complete mercy of the plot around him and the people who force their will or views on him and he knows.

“Everything is meaningless" he shouts in Pompeii, because it is and he knows he has no choices or chances to be his own self. Like he never did.

And the real tragedy is that the series doesn’t try to give his autonomy back, no sir, but it tries to build a huge box around him and label it with “narcissist, evil, villain“ and Loki is simply forced to keep up with that, to accept that to survive. Even in his interactions with the presumptive “love interest“ and “friend“ (I hate them both and loathe both ships) he always feels like he knows he isn’t allowed to be himself, that they decided who he must be and what his intentions may be, so he just says what they want to hear but you can tell from how he moves and looks and behaves that actually, truly, he’s just trying to survive the last terrible hand life had dealt him with.

There is only one moment in which I could see a glimpse of the real original Loki and it’s when he’s all alone, watching the rest of the footage of his never-been (for him) life, a handful of minutes in comparison to a whole series in which he should have been the main force and end up winner at the end... instead he’s just dragged by the events.

So damn sad and that’s not the Loki I wanted to see.

ahb! has inspired me to research this in depth despite the fact that ik absolutely nothing about art atp in time, especially it’s history 😭

any help would be welcomed as i haven’t yet started!! big fan of your works btw (just read winterlude), i love them <3

i. would start with maybe narrowing it down slightly?? is there a specific mythology you want to hone in on??

i took an introduction to classical mythology class in undergrad coupled with an art in the lives of ordinary greeks and romans class which was super cool so some resources for that would be:

Early Greek myth: a guide to literary and artistic sources by Timothy Gantz

the MET has a great free resource on Roman art you can find here!

The Inquiring Eye: Classical Mythology in European Art by the National Gallery of Art in Washington you can find here!

Anything by Andrew Wallace-Hadrill but shout out to Houses and society in Pompeii and Herculaneum by him.

This site will help you identify common iconography associated with greek and roman mythological figures.

Also cannot speak highly enough of this site here!

But!! If you're looking for egyptian mythology in art or celtic mythology, or norse mythology that's a whole other can of worms!! (i could help you with celtic resources though because i took a celtic art class of early britain and ireland during post-grad. but otherwise i'd have to do some digging to find some reputable resources.)

I finiisshhheeddddd Mer Hel and @peste-bubonica 's Corpse Spouse AU Eclipse! Both live near a volcano though he lives basically next to it, thus making him quite hot to the touch. The two I imagine wouldn't have met, merely talk. (Also bc he's egotistical af he probably thinks he's a king of some kind because big and mean pffft)

The so-called "Alexander Mosaic" illustrates a battle between Alexander the Great and the Persian king Darius, most likely the Battle of Issus in 333 BCE. The mosaic is made of about one and a half million tiny colored tiles called tesserae, arranged in gradual curves called opus vermiculatum, (literally, "worm work," because they seem to replicate the slow motion of a crawling worm). The mosaic is an unusually detailed work for a private residence and was probably commissioned by a wealthy person or family. In this section, Darius is shown in a chariot. He seems to be desperately commanding his frightened charioteer to flee the battle, while stretching out his hand either as a mute gesture to Alexander, or possibly after throwing a javelin. He has a worried expression on his face. The charioteer is whipping the horses as he tries to escape.
