Residents look on from windows and stand in the street across from 173 Brook Ave. in the Bronx, November 1, 1950, after word of an attempted assassination of President Truman in Washington the same day had reached the neighborhood. Oscar Collazo, 37, who lived in the 173 Brook Ave. tenement, was one of two gunmen shot outside Truman's Blair House residence.* Collazo's wife identified her husband, who was wounded, as a member of the revolutionary Puerto Rican Nationalist Party.
*The White House was being renovated at the time.

Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2023 National Costume: "Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian"
The national costume that I have the honor to present to the universe, pays homage to the architecture of Old San Juan and the exciting atmosphere of the Calle San Sebastian Festivities. The skirt, crafted from velvet and black sequins in an elegant trumpet cut, is adorned with hundreds of handmade pebbles, each painted to replicate the iconic blue pebbles of Old San Juan.
Above the corset, which emulates the architecture of the Fortress, unfolds a shell-like back adorned with more than a dozen iconic sites of Old Saint John, from the fountain of thePaseo de la Princesa to the Chapel of the Holy Christ, all in stunning 3D detail, some illuminated with LED lights.
At the back of the dressing room, a hand painting offers a panoramic view of the San Felipe del Morro Castle, the heads, blisters, planners and folk dancers dancing above the festive crowd, with the Monostrellada flag flying high. A special detail is that the five Miss Universe Puerto Rican queens and other iconic personalities of the country stand out in the painting.
The entire suit is meticulously embroidered in various colored crystals, adding a touch of glitter and charm to this masterpiece.
On the other hand, the accessories that accompany the craft were designed and created by Fabian De la Fuentes. The earrings worn by the piece simulate the lighthouses of the residences and streets of Viejo San Juan, while its bracelets represent the structures of residential balconies. A magical flower adorns the hair.
Las Calle San Sebastian are a tradition that has united Puerto Ricans for generations, and this typical costume, with its attention to detail and passionate tribute to this celebration, will undoubtedly capture the hearts of everyone on the Miss Universe stage.

Did you know that, when Latin American countries were becoming independent from Spain, 5 of their anthems were composed by Catalans?
In Argentina 🇦🇷, the government that resulted from the 1810 May Revolution chose an anthem composed by Blai Parera i Moret.
In Chile 🇨🇱, the anthem chosen in 1828 was composed by Ramon Carnicer i Batlle.
Mexico's 🇲🇽 1854 contest to choose a national anthem was won by Jaume Nunó i Roca.
When Panama 🇵🇦 became independent in 1904, they commissioned Albert Galimany i Pujol to compose their national anthem.
Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 adopted its current national anthem in 1952, choosing a song composed in 1867 by Fèlix Astol i Artés.

Slaves escaped frequently within the first generation of their arrival from Africa and often preserved their African languages and much of their culture and religion. African traditions included such things as the use of certain medicinal herbs together with special drums and dances when the herbs are administered to a sick person. Other African healing traditions and rites have survived through the centuries.
The jungles around the Caribbean Sea offered food, shelter, and isolation for the escaped slaves. Maroons sustained themselves by growing vegetables and hunting. Their survival depended upon their cultures, and their military abilities, using guerrilla tactics and heavily fortified dwellings involving traps and diversions. Some defined leaving the community as desertion and therefore punishable by death. They also originally raided plantations. During these attacks, the maroons would burn crops, steal livestock and tools, kill slavemasters, and invite other slaves to join their communities. Individual groups of maroons often allied themselves with the local indigenous tribes and occasionally assimilated into these populations. Maroons played an important role in the histories of Brazil, Suriname, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica.
There is much variety among maroon cultural groups because of differences in history, geography, African nationality, and the culture of indigenous people throughout the Western Hemisphere.

La Mina Falls, El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico: La Mina Trail in El Yunque is one of the most popular hikes in the rain forest along with Big Tree Trail. The reason; they both take you to the beautiful 35 foot waterfall at La Mina Falls where the water flows over huge rocks into a pool, where you can enjoy a cool (make that COLD) refreshing swim.

The Rare: Iguaca (Taíno Indian name) a.k.a Cotorra Puertorriqueña / Puerto Rican Parrot / Amazona vittata
"The Puerto Rican parrot is a critically endangered endemic species of Puerto Rico, and the only native parrot in the United States. During pre-Columbian times the parrot was abundant, but through the years, deforestation, predation, diseases and poaching caused the population to crash."
"(...)The parrots are usually heard before they are seen, as they emit loud repetitive bugle-like call when they fly."

The fight for Puerto Rico's sovereignty and independence, although increasingly uphill, is carried out every day from different scenarios. There is the fight at the international level, where representatives of our organizations raise the protest, especially in United Nations organizations. And it is in its Geneva office that the true face of the United States at the UN was shown to the world.

Miss Grand Puerto Rico 2023 National Costume
“The Chupacabra” In Puerto Rico and many parts of the world exists a legend of a creature described as a reptile alien-like form that feeds itself at night from farmers’ livestock. The first recorded sight of this creature was in Puerto Rico, where it inhabits and has become part of the local folklore. Its name has been attributed to Puerto Rican comedian Silverio Perez. Through the years the origin of the creature remains unknown and despite all efforts to see it, it remains a mystery.

🧐... All my life (70+ years), I was ‘taught’ about the goodness, the excellence, the righteousness, the exceptionalism, the example and guiding light of the USA.
I was taught (and I truly believed) that the US stood for justice, peace, equality. It alwasy was the moral standard to follow.
Well, I’ve slowly and painfully have come to realize that it’s been all lies, it’s been a front, a facade.
My personal process started by learning about my country, Puerto Rico’s history. (It wouldn't have taken this long recognized these facts, had I been taught the true history of my country). Then I learned here and there about so many other nations. So many other injustices … I remember Vietnam (vaguely), Hawaii, Alaska, Iraq, Afghanistan, Central America and more.
I have looked into histories and educated myself — I still am.
**The current Palestinian ‘situation’ is the drop that filled the cup!!**
"Washington has made it exceedingly clear that it sees the Palestinina peopleas expendable and irrelevant human scum and that's not going to change!"
~~MOUIN RABBANI, Middle East Analyst~~ ================================
There’s no moral standing which the USA can use to justify what it’s supporting, financing and continually vetoing!!!
USA: you have lost your moral compass, you have lost your 'high place' as a defender of democracy; you have lost more than you can ever imagine!! — history won’t be kind to your actions.
History will reveal what you REALLY are!!
ME? — I personally am ‘bowing out’! — I sadly recognize that I was brainwashed and willfully followed what I learned. — I can’t anymore: when you know, you know!!
I have to follow my mind and my soul or I’d be as lost as YOU are!!
