Here We Go Again: GEO Group’s Wack-a-Mole Prison Scheduled to Open for the 5th Time

For-profit “punk prison” North Lake Correctional Facility, owned by GEO Group, announced today that they have a shiny new federal prison contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, aka ICE. Cripplepunk, madpunk, and neuropunk aren't just "I'm disabled and also left-leaning". It's a specific realm of activism rooted in dismantling the systems that put disabled, mad, sick, etc folks at a disadvantage in society. This mean not only being against the very systems that harm us but also understanding their colonial origins and continued racist legacies. (Anti-ableism, anti-sanism, anti-psych, etc). This means not only just identifying and finding pride in your disability but also building and constantly evolving your understanding of disability and diversity and learning how you can change your worldview to accurately highlight the struggles of disabled people. (EVEN if it sometimes means you will be uncomfortable or unsure of unlearning some kinds of hate.)

Remember our loved ones who are in carceral group homes that wouldn't pass the burrito test. Remember our loved ones who are cut off from disability community and forcibly isolated through the violent ableism of these institutions. Disability solidarity means that we must create these community connections that transgress these barriers and lets our loved ones know that they are valued, important, and that we are fighting for their freedom.

In the end, it is extremely vindicating to see the various accusations levied re: why people don't like Campaign 3 because like, in the end, most of the people who do like campaign 3 are desperately insecure people who cannot live with the idea that someone else doesn't love the thing they love. Like yeah, if it makes you feel better, sure, call me a stupid jesus freak centrist edgelord who isn't a Real Punk (who also apparently only wants feel-good liberal endings), and who only cares about stories where you can ship two men; you can conjure up an image of me sitting slack-jawed on a couch, face covered with cheeto dust, pointing at the TV and going HAHA LIGHTNING GOD GIVE BIG LIZARD A BELT. It won't make you feel better, is the thing, because you've decided total fandom consensus is the only thing that will ever make you happy, and so long as a handful of people are like "Campaign 3 isn't very good and I don't think Bells Hells are very good people within the context of that world, and outside of that context I don't really care about them" you will be miserable.

Transcript: The holiday season is often seen as a time of connection and care. But for deaf/disabled people incarcerated across the United States, it’s a period of heightened isolation and struggle. HEARD's Commissary Fund is a direct way to help people survive inside by providing funds for essential items like food, hygiene products, and stamps for communicating with loved ones.

Did you know that a tube of travel sized toothpaste often costs five times more inside prison? These extensive markups on costs and fees put the burden on deaf/disabled incarcerated community members and their loved ones, many of whom are multiply-marginalized themselves.

For over 4 years, HEARD has sent commissary funds to deaf/disabled incarcerated community members during the holiday season. Through over a decade of advocacy, we have seen that commissary support is a lifeline for people inside. This winter, we are calling on you to help us continue this work.]

Pride 2025 Day 4: Donny the Punk (1946-1996)

Born Robert Martin Jr, he assumed the name Stephen Donaldson when he founded the Student Homophile League at Columbia University in 1967 (the first LGBTQ+ student group). While he initially believed himself to be gay, he later realized he was actually bisexual.

After college he joined the Navy, where he didn't hide his relationships with men and was given a dishonorable discharge in 1972. Donny was one of the early popularizers of the term Pride for the annual celebration held in June.

After he left the military, he became a pacifist Quaker and founded Committee of Friends on Bisexuality.

He was imprisoned for protesting the military several times and subsequently founded Stop Prisoner Rape because of his experiences. In this role, he testified before Congress and even before the Supreme Court of the United States.

While the moniker Donny the Punk predated punk music, his writings in punk and antiracist skinhead zines in the '70s-'80s were widely lauded. In the 1980s, he was the chief organizer of the Alternative Press & Radio Council (APRC), which documented punk culture, organized charity benefit punk shows, and archived live recordings of punk shows.

Donny died from AIDS related complications in 1996.

May we remember the undaunting courage he used in being open with his true self in the face of persecution and addressing injustice and walk in similar truth and courage!
