it's so annoying that it took this long for Qualcomm to put together a half-decent ARM desktop chip because they have so clearly had the tech to do it for years. My Quest 2 headset is a four-year-old piece of silicon and it pushes 90Hz VR graphics on an 8W system power budget. The battery in this thing is absolutely minute, 14Wh, and it lasts two hours of intensive usage, which is preposterous. If you could have had this tech in a laptop it would have wiped the floor with every other thin and light on the planet in 2020. Intel was doing 10th gen back then.

A gaming laptop from 2016 would last similarly long on a 40Wh battery and it would have groaned and complained running VR, actually I don't even have to speculate, do you know what existed in 2016, it was the MSI VR Backpack which was exactly this and it sucked ass, I used it at a trade show once. 90-120 minute battery and it was huge and heavy, needed a 1060 which could just barely push desktop VR, and the battery in it was a 91Wh monster I think.

The Quest is taking shortcuts, it's probably not quite as fast as the MSI VR One, but it's close and you wear it on your head.

Qualcomm are finally making a good ARM chip with desktop and upstream Linux support and it only took Apple beating everyone to the punch with a spectacularly efficient hunk of silicon. I have an old chromebook that's running postmarket Linux because I have wanted an ARM laptop basically for as long as I have known what ARM was and unfortunately it kind of sucks ass because the mainline support is still shit.

Trump’s Advisers Are Freaking Out Over His Reckless Tariffs

The Wall Street Journal reports that Trump administration officials, including his chief of staff, Susie Wiles, are getting worried phone calls from CEOs and lobbyists hoping to get the president to lay out a specific economic agenda regarding tariffs. Several have stopped trying to get Trump to back away from his approach on tariffs, appealing to the White House for a clearer message instead.

On Monday, Trump met with CEOs from IBM, Qualcomm, HP, and other tech companies, who warned the president that tariffs could hurt their industry, the Journal reported, citing an unnamed source. Trump told reporters that the topic of the meeting was investing in the United States.

The various messages coming from the White House have also spooked Republicans who think Trump doesn’t have a coherent plan on the economy. Trump has refused to rule out a recession and indicated that tariffs could hurt the average American, and as a result stocks have plummeted. All of the market’s gains since his election have been wiped out, and Trump has flip-flopped and carved out exceptions for his tariffs at the same time.

While I hope the rumors about the Snapdragon X chips aren’t true, and they pave the way for widespread ARM64 adoption, I’m extremely hesitant about giving Qualcomm even more of a monopoly over the computers in our daily lives.

They already have a death strangle on the smartphone market. I really think they should keep their grubby hands off desktops.
