Question for the artist, whats the parameters for drawing fusion fanart? Because a lot of people see it as a romanic thing, but it isnt always that. For example, are you okay with fans drawing steven fused the crystal gems? Are you okay with fans drawing any fusions including CG, or is that an ick?

Okay, SO. I apologize for answering this late - I was trying to find the correct way to reply to this ask without coming off as someone extremely senile and jaded.

First things first - I really appreciate you taking my feelings into consideration on this! I can tell it comes from a place of genuine kindness and caring, and I think that's awesome.

I'm not unfamiliar with the fact that some artists feel very protective of their characters, and sometimes try to lay down rules about how they are to be viewed, how they are to be drawn by others, etc. So I don't blame you at all for assuming this is something that needs to be done, given the current fandom environment in certain spaces.

That all being said.

This idea that drawing characters in Situations Which May Be Uncomfortable To Someone With A Specific Interpretation Of The Media (which is not at all supported by canon text) is transgressive is..... boy...... that's not a good one.

It is..... Extremely Evangelical in its conception.

But to answer your question -

Yes, you can absolutely draw Steven - WD!AU Steven - fusing with the gems or CG.

Yes, you can absolutely draw CG fusing with Steven or the Crystal Gems, etc.

Because

Even if someone DID assume fusion was romantic primarily, that doesn't mean it should be the default, and in fact it ISN'T. Many, MANY fusions in the show are not representative of romantic relationships.

Canon Steven, in the Canon show, fused with TONS of people he didn't have romantic feelings for. Most of the people, outside of Connie, for a start.

Even if imagining CG in a romantic relationship with the Crystal Gems DOES give me the 'ick' (which, actually, yeah, it kinda does I guess, given that I can't really see that thing happening given that she's effectively (not LITERALLY) a child) that doesn't mean YOUR art has to be limited by my presumptions of what fusion means in this context, if we disagree on it

And not to put too fine a point on it but

Fusion ISN'T inherently about romance.

Fusion ISN'T inherently sexual!

No part of the show supports either of these ideas. Fusion is and always has been explicitly about various types of RELATIONSHIPS - including things like sibling bonds (Smokey Quartz), parent-child relationships (Steg, Steven and ANY of the CGs), friendships, Unhealthy Control-Seeking (Malachite) and just straight up collaborative murder (a la Aquamarine and Ruby).

Yes, some fusions ARE inherently romantic in nature, but that does not mean ALL fusions adhere to these rules. In fact, MOST fusions aren't even about that.

And even if they were.............we're all allowed to express our OWN interpretation of things using art. That's not an Ungood Thought that you should be shamed for.

Something fantastic I noticed about Steven Universe on my rewatch is that there are SO many hints that Rose Quartz wasn't a normal rose quartz, but you don't really notice them at first because they're all presented as part of another characters story arc. We get loads of information about quartz soldiers as a gem type, what they are, what they can do, the fact they're all kind of the same even across different types of quartz, but this is all shown through Amethyst's story, her struggles with Jasper and the fact they're supposed to be the same but she came out "wrong", and so you're focused on that, and never stop to think 'wow okay, if all quartzes are supposedly like Amethyst and Jasper, then why could Rose Quartz do all of that extra stuff?' In fact they outright state that Jasper is an especially powerful and perfectly made Quartz solider, the best of the best, and she can't do all the stuff Rose could do. But this all flies mostly under the radar because it's presented as information for Amethyst's story

these are honestly a bit old by now (2 month-ish? oh geez) but they have never left my head. If you want to know more, there is a massive yap wall under this cut with some lore and design ideas

First, Jekyll and Hyde's gems!

My first instinct was giving them hearts for gems, since we only ever see one Spinel in Steven Universe.

But I ended up remembering this that I read in the wiki a long time ago, that Spinels would have differently shaped gems based on playing card suits. I was suddenly hit with the fact that we do see both Jekyll and Hyde referred to with card symbolism in Just a Song at Twilight! This was very good for me, because I don't know anything about cards at all.

Jekyll also had a lot more diamonds scattered around his design– both a nod to his gem and his 'rule-following' attitude. Hyde only has the bare minimum to signify his court.

Trying to make a Sapphire is hard, and clothes are even harder, but I ended up making the choice to give Lanyon longer hair. He secretly hates it and reforms with shorter hair the first chance that he gets, but for now he has to keep up appearances

Figuring out Everly was also pretty hard, but that's mostly because she doesn't have that many appearances in the comic. I hope I got her right, even though I'm not entirely sure about making her a quartz.

LORE DUMP TIME!!!

Red Spinel (aka Henry Jekyll) was originally meant to be Pink Diamond's playmate. However, not long after her (his) creation, it became clear she was an off-color. An imperfect gem had no business being so close to a diamond, but due to the rarity and high-cost of spinels she was spared and instead sent as a 'gift' to a successful commander, Star Garnet (aka Lanyon Sir.)

Star Garnet was well-known for shaping up off-color gems into perfect fits for their roles. While this mostly earns the reputation of a fearsome leader, Star Garnet isn't actually cruel to her gems, she simply organizes thought-out training regimens to fit every gem's disabilities. Still, this exact reputation is what led to her being gifted Red Spinel. While she did not have any use for a Spinel seeing as she is war commander, she couldn't exactly refuse a gift so important as a spinel from the diamonds.

One of Star Garnet's gems that stands out the most is certainly her sapphire. Sapphires are aristocratic gems of high-standing, and so, are not under control of gems such as garnets. This sapphire, of course, is a special case. Tall where a sapphire is small, rowdy where a sapphire is calm. Sapphire (Robert Lanyon) has struggled her whole life to have a fraction of the respect a gem of her standing is supposed to have before she simply gave up. If no one is going to take her seriously for her predictions, then she'll give them a real reason.

Disrespecting orders, messing around with 'lower' gems and being generally disrespectful are Sapphire's specialty. She began to take quite a liking to interacting with the other gems in the Station: soldier, technicians... They all looked at her with the adoration befitting for a sapphire, but an adoration she had never seen directed at her before. Interacting with 'lower' gems made her feel a type of control she simply never felt in her life, and it was easy to leave once they got to attached–, or stars forbid–, accidentally tried to fuse with her. The fusions never worked, seeing as only one side felt the connection, but it was enough to prove her influence and leave gems ashamed.

Of course, things started to change with Spinel's arrival.

Seeing as Garnet had no use for a playmate, Spinel mostly walked around their space station like a particularly unnerving jester before meeting Sapphire. The two quickly hit off as Sapphire used Spinel as an excuse to escape most of the time, and Garnet mostly approved in hopes that Spinel might to Sapphire some good. The two gems ended up bonding, finding secret rooms to scurry off to and share experiences.

Spinel wasn't what Sapphire thought a spinel would be like, and Sapphire wasn't what Spinel thought a sapphire would act like. They both talked about their experiences, with Spinel admitting she wasn't particularly good at making people smile or fond of playing, not to mention her extreme curiosity for the works of peridot's (who have grow a bit scared of the red gem that keeps staring at them intensely from the shadows).

Now, while Sapphire didn't know how a spinel was actually supposed to act like, it was clear Spinel did not emerge with any knowledge of etiquette (which Sapphire actually did, another reason for her insecurities. She did everything right, so why was she never enough?) so Sapphire took upon herself to teach what she knows to Spinel, who took to the lessons like a fish in water. That's how the "gentlegem" lessons started.

As their friendship grew, so did Spinel's charm and confidence. She was a natural at being charismatic and while she wasn't a natural playmate, she was very good at boosting gem's morale with speeches and words. This completely erased most of Spinel's past reputation as 'that-one-creepy-gem', except for the peridots who were still a bit... Wary. But that's fine.

While Sapphire was a bit bitter about this (because, really, why was Spinel better at this than her, the gem who was supposed to be born for this role?) she was still floored by a torrent of new feelings as the time passed by. It didn't take long for her to realize what these feelings were. This care, this adoration, it was what those gems she so toyed with in the past felt for her. Spinel completely took away her control and didn't even realize it, and now Sapphire had to live with the consequences. She was unquestionably in love.

Even with all of these confusing feelings and the growing pressure on Sapphire, they still met up in their secret spot every few rotations. It was in one of these meetings that Sapphire took one of those fancy gadgets of recorded music that higher gems had from Pink Diamond's balls. Spinel didn't know how to dance, but Sapphire teached her. They danced, they harmonized, they glowed. Fusion was inevitable, and it felt amazing, but upon realizing what was happening their fusion immediately broke under the torrent of their feelings. Sapphire was the first one to react, and she ran, leaving Spinel dazed and alone.

Spinel tried acting like nothing happened after, and maybe Sapphire would've done so too if it wasn't for what happened next. Star Garnet came with a brand new soldier, a rose quartz (Everly Solanki), specifically to keep Sapphire in line and finally make her do her job. When Sapphire went to talk to Spinel directly and say they couldn't keep up with their arrangement anymore, Spinel was the one to leave first this time, now leaving Sapphire dazed and alone.

While Sapphire's and Rose Quartz's relationship was rocky at first, they ended up growing as friends by the end, relating to each other's struggles and expectations. Meanwhile, Spinel fell to an uneasy depression, greatly worrying her friends. This was about the time Spinel truly let herself indulge in the alchemy and technology she always loved, hoping, praying that she could find a solution that would make her less of a broken gem, a disposable clown. Studying the properties of a gem's, well, gem– Spinel manipulated what is supposed to be a gem's very being, their coding, their brain and sense of self. The injection that she delivery directly to her gems was supposed to separate herself from all that made her defective, it created Hyde instead.

I have more plans for this au– like how Jekyll didn't actually create the society before making Hyde. Star Garnet and her fleet will eventually be put in the Earth's gem war which will result in a part of her gems to mysteriously rebel and steal a ship. These gems, (which included Spinel, Sapphire and Rose) would come to make the Society in the future! Spinel would end up naturally taking a leading role in their escape and he appointed their leader. The plan would be that they settled down in a distant part of Earth's moon and would only visit the planet many years after the war was over. These visits would end up with them learning about things like names and gender so you don't have to call characters by their gems all the time, those are their dead names now! (← silly)

Tear species guide Masterpost.2

(Disclaimer: Tear is not an actual gemstone, this is a fan-made open species based on Steven Universe. They are not related to the volcanic glass called Pele's Tears)

Tears are an elite nobility Gems. Primarily, they use their future vision to assure the process of Gem creation. Their main role in Homeworld is to organize and localize possible colonies for the creation of a Kindergarten.

In addition to their abilities as prophets, they can levitate. They have the power of creating crystals for their self defense such as weapons, armor and flight. However, Tears' future vision only applies to the events of a star/planet/moon and their condition.

Their main power is Cosmic Energy Manipulation, wich consists of being capable to create spacial dust storms. It can cause light distortions, that can heavilly harm a Gem's physical form (as Gems are made of light). This element is only able to be used on space or space-like atmospheres.

Because of their high rank status, Tears tend to have guards assigned to ensure their safety, since they were not made for combat. The most common types of guards can vary (Rubies, Quartzes, Topazes, other type of soldier/guard gem...)

They are a tall, skinny gem that generally have tear-like pattern limited to their face. However, there's a rarer variety of Tear that can have marking/patterns around their body. Tears have hair tend to have a shadow that resembles night star.

Their gemstones are more commonly faceted, resembling a star with 4 points. Its shape and pattern variates, and they can have inclusions such as being rutilated, a cat's eye, etcètera. A rarer variety of their gemstone is being a plain cabochon while having a variety of patterns.

Tears creation process involves White Diamond and they cannot be created like other gems, wich is why Tears are a highly rare Gem.

Off Colours Tears

Overcooked Tears are half the size of an standard Tear. Thicker Tears are the same size of a Tear and tend to have plump lips. They are both perfectly able to function in Homeworld and while being considered defective. Small Tears are unable to do their Gem tasks properly and are chased as an off colour.

(The more "masculine" base is just there in case someone wanted to go for another vibe)

I made this as a very general guide of "What I would do". They are an open species, and anyone is welcome to pick up something and go "I don't like this, I'm doing it my way". That includes palettes, forms, shapes and powers.

Per example, my original guide did not include a thick tear and they ended up being canon to me. A bunch of this (updated) guide is inspired by others' takes of things that I just didn't see coming and that inspired me to make it "official".

My priority is for others to expand my concept. I do not care if someone does something a way I don't like, because then there's no point of making them an open species. Literally go have fun.

Build a Brother AU

AU where Mikey is the only one Draxum created as a test to see if the experiment would work without risking wasting resources. Mikey as a child used mystic powers, his imagination, paper, and pens to accidentally bring to life the drawing he did of the brothers he always wanted. One big and strong to protect him, one smart to help him understand the world around him, and one fun to always play with him.

When they were first made they were just pen and paper doodles or simple paintings. They were so weak though, and faded so fast. As Mikey kept recreating them the more they resonated with a medium the more solid they became, the more themselves they became.

Donnie is made out of clay. The others worried about him breaking during a fight. If he loses a limb he can still control it.

Leo would be graffiti. Made to grab your attention and be fun and expressive. He's very proud of his markings. Leo leaves splats behind every time he hits a wall.

Raph is kind of like a stone golem made of a bunch of large and sturdy rocks. Since a lot of rocks have types of patterns my boy can have the markings he deserves. Maybe some kind of quartz or gem for his eyes so they can really sparkle when he's happy.

Leo smudging eyebrows on Donnie's as a joke, but Donnie likes it and keeps it.

Leo also leaves handprints on Donnie to annoy him.

How It is Created: Tiger’s Eye is basically a quartz but they formed in such an unusual way that the fibers of the mineral called crocidolite are laid down in parallel bands within the structure. This creates its silk like appearance and its “cat’s eye”.

History: Tombs in the ancient city of Ur in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) dating back to 2500 BCE have yielded gold sets with agates, like tiger’s eye and carnelian. The tiger’s eye was very popular due to the belief that it harnessed the power of the earth and the sun. This is why it is associated with the god of the sun, Ra and why Egyptians considered it a very valuable gem. Roman soldiers believed that the tiger’s eye was a symbol of bravery and would ride with pieces of tiger’s eye on them in order to encourage bravery during battles.

To charge: You can also charge it on the windowsill with the sun. The sun really gives it a great charge, especially if one of the deities you work with is a sun god.

If you’re laying a preparatory “cleansing” spiral, start at the topmost point and lay crystals alternately, with the points pointing out from the center.

Place the Goldstone in the center as the keystone.

If laying an abundance grid, begin by placing the Goldstone in the center, stating that your intention is for it to bring abundance into your life.

Lay a spiral of alternated crystals, pointing down and inward, until you reach the Goldstone.

Add a grounding stone if appropriate.

Hi Steven Universe community how ya’ll been

Anyways so I was reminded about the existence of SU:F, rewatched it, and thought Steven’s corrupted form looked kinda weird so I decided to redesign it entirely!

Breakdown of my design choices below the cut

I know a lot of people wanted the giant head in the intro to be a giant worm or some kind of multiple armed centipede dragon but why is Steven’s corrupted form reptilian anyways? It’s to my understanding that most of the gems that came from Pink Diamond’s essence were some variation of quartz gems (the Amethysts, the Jaspers, the Rose Quartzes). When you look at their corrupted forms, they all seem to have a similar look. A quadruped dog-beast creature with hand-like front feet, hoof-like back feet, long hair running down their backs and tail, and horns protruding from their body.

If all these gem types that originated from Pink Diamond’s essence share these things in common, why doesn’t Steven’s corrupted form? This instead of reptilian, I changed Steven’s corrupted to be more mammalian and echo some of these features. In addition, I also wanted to include the rough, discolored patches of skin that corrupted quartz gems seem to have.

Rose is seemed to have a love for lions, so much so that she created Pink Lion. Thus, I feel like that would also reflect on Steven’s corrupted form (lion traits).

For special abilities, I thought about giving him wings, but decided not too. Pink Lion and Lars gained many different powers after their resurrection via Pink Diamond essence (portal roar and walk on water), so I feel like it’s logical for the person whose gem these powers originated from should also have these abilities. Not sure if he would have pocket dimension hair because he can’t exactly go inside his own hair (Lars tried and failed).

Oh yeah I know it doesn’t look like it, but Steven’s corrupted form is still the same size as canon. And yes I gave him corruption scars because all the healed corrupted gems seem to have them so I found it weird that Steven never got any when he was healed by diamond essence. (Yes I let him keep the tail, no I will not elaborate)
