Clay McLeod Chapman (Ghost Eaters, What Kind of Mother) will publish Wake Up and Open Your Eyes in hardcover, e-book, and audio book on January 7 via Quirk Books.
Drawing comparisons to The Last of Us and When Evil Lurks, the 384-page social horror novel follows a family on the run from a demonic possession epidemic that spreads through media.
Noah Fairchild has been losing his formerly polite Southern parents to far-right cable news for years, so when his mother leaves him a voicemail warning him that the "Great Reawakening" is here, he assumes it’s related to one of the many conspiracy theories she believes in. But when his own phone calls go unanswered, Noah makes the long drive from Brooklyn to Richmond, Virginia. There, he discovers his childhood home in shambles, a fridge full of spoiled food, and his parents locked in a terrifying trance-like state in front of the TV. Panicked, Noah attempts to snap them out of it and get medical help. Then Noah’s mother brutally attacks him. But Noah isn’t the only person to be attacked by a loved one. Families across the country are tearing each other apart-–literally-–as people succumb to a form of possession that gets worse the more time they spend watching particular channels, using certain apps, or visiting certain websites. In Noah’s Richmond-based family, only he and his young nephew Marcus are unaffected. Together, they must race back to the safe haven of Brooklyn–-but can they make it before they fall prey to the violent hordes? This ambitious, searing novel from "one of horror's modern masters" holds a mirror to our divided nation, and will shake readers to the core.

About the Book
Embrace your inner goblin! Learn to decorate, dress, craft, forage, and live according to the goblin principles of community, diversity, proud weirdness, and joyful mess.
Do you ever feel strange, gross, chaotic, underappreciated, or like you don’t quite fit in? Great news: you might be a goblin! That means your imperfections and idiosyncrasies are the most awesome things about you, and you can build a more balanced, comfortable, harmonious life by accepting and honoring them—taking inspiration from the frogs, fungus, moss, rocks, and dirt that goblins love.
Can a mushroom give you fashion tips? Can a snail teach you to be a better person? You bet they can—and in this book you’ll also learn to:
Build a moss garden for your lair
Grow and use medicinal plants
Forage for berries (even in the city)
Mend your cozy sweaters
Display your cool rock collection
And more!
Anyone can be a goblin, and Goblin Mode includes life advice for celebrating physical and mental diversity, rejecting prejudice, and generally hanging on to a little joy.
Featuring 25 whimsical illustrations by Marian Churchland, Goblin Mode will help you rethink your relationship with your body, your home, your community, and the earth.

2025 Romance
With Valentine’s Day looming, I thought I would turn to this year’s romance releases. I’ve focused on contemporary but you will find some exceptions in among the lot. The search led me to some publishers I hadn’t been aware of before and that was very exciting. Single Player by Tara Tai | 07 / 01 / 25 – Alcove Press Two video game creators go head-to-head in this delightful, queer…

A Practically Nonsensical Review: Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix
"It's a nondenominational séance"
My rating starred:
Instant Classic | 💫Love💫 | Like | Indifferent | Not For Me
A humorous workplace horror about something wicked going on after hours at an Ikea adjacent store! Hendrix's style of humor shines in this half infomercial, half hero's journey (and all ghoulish tale). Some good gross moments, commentary on consumerism, and work/life malaise.
I started the physical book and finished it on audio. The book looks like a furniture catalog, which is fun. And the audiobook was exciting! The narration really sold it.

5 Romances I Want to Read
This thread of romance books came across my Twitter and it got me thinking. One of my favourite and most joyous genres, I’ve not dedicated a post to it in some time, I don’t think. I’m not going to include any of the books you can find through the link. There’s no need to repeat and you can find them easily enough on your own. Unless the site has imploded. In which case, my apologies. Sweethand…

Page 15
While wandering through the village they soon encountered a familiar face. It was the deer friend from the field. This time the deer was covered in more than just mud. The doctor was sad that they were messy again so soon. Now they would clean the deer so well that it would never get messy again. The doctor pulled a large container of a glowing substance from their medical bag and got to work. A few moments later, the deer was so clean they too glowed a brilliant green. It was OK if the friends in the village needed more substantial help. The good doctor was happy to provide it.
