this quote about cordyceps from this article in a scientific magazine is basically how i've always imagined possession to work in horror stories. the demon/entity/whatever doesn't alter your perception, displace you, or control your mind, they just take over all your bodily processes, bypassing your brain entirely. they force your mouth and vocal cords to form the words they want you to say, force your limbs to move in the direction they want you to go, and force your lungs to keep expanding and contracting and your heart to keep beating, even through excruciating pain and horrific injury, so you can't even self-sabotage and your friends and loved ones are discouraged from trying to stop you for fear of what harm they might cause you to do to yourself to escape. you're a passenger in the driver's seat of your own car, and the hands on the wheel, though outwardly apparently the same pair you've always had, are no longer your own.

Since spooky season is upon us, this is your kind reminder from an avid consumer of true paranormal encounter shows that sleep paralysis is insanely scary but is not a demon, alien, or other entity menacing you in your bedroom.
I get sleep paralysis with miserable frequency, but it’s not common for most people—and so folks often don’t have a context to what’s happening to them.
Sleep paralysis can be triggered by anxiety, disrupted sleep patterns, drugs or alcohol, or any of a number of weird things that affect your brain during sleep.
The common experiences are feeling that you are unable to move or scream or that there is something interfering with your breathing. The cause is that your brain turns off motor functions when you sleep, but sometimes your brain is semi-awake and tries to initiate movement—but can’t. That’s sleep paralysis. This is scary, so the semi-awake mind often garnishes the experience with dream or nightmare figures whose presence somewhat “explains” things. Usually you’ll also see the inside of your room, or other details that seem like your eyes are actually open. But that’s because your brain is dreaming that you’re seeing the real room. Trust me, if you have enough sleep paralysis episodes, you begin to spot the difference.
Happily, your house isn’t haunted and the aliens do not want to probe you!
Try sleeping on your side or stomach. Get your sleep schedule stabilised. Cut drinking or eating too soon before bed. Check to see if any of your medications cause sluggishness.
And please be wary of how easy it is to give yourself false memories by revisiting a dream memory too much and trying to squeeze details out of it. It sounds like a silly thing to warn about, but sleep paralysis experiences are terrifying and feel profoundly real. People have, without intentional effort, connected their sleep paralysis experiences with other details and eventually ended up convinced they’d experienced demonic possession or alien abductions. Sleep paralysis isn’t actually lethally dangerous, the way carbon monoxide is, but it can really fuck up people’s lives if they think it’s “real.”

Your demon lover has your full consent to possess you at any time.
You've laid down some exceptions and rules in a very carefully-worded contract, of course, but outside of that, your body is fair game.
Sometimes, giving yourself over to possession is all that gets you through the day, your lover piloting you when you can't face work or some social obligation. The reward for doing this for you is to feed from your energy afterwards.
Your lover can take any toy from your collection and make you ride it for hours, wringing all the pleasure out of you that you have to give, and more, until you're completely spent and satiated and unable to move for a different reason.
Your demon lover can make you go out in public with a toy of their choice buzzing away inside you, and although your own hands placed it there, you're unable to turn it off, or to turn it down. All you can do is ride it out.
Your lover can make you touch yourself in the privacy of your home, perhaps in the kitchen so you have to grasp the countertop to stay upright while your legs shake and turn weak. Perhaps on your way down the corridor so you go to your hands and knees and crawl, head bowed, moaning and crying out, with one hand between your legs, or perhaps in the quiet of your bedroom in front of the mirror.
They get you so worked up, so close to the edge, and then back away with a laugh that doesn't sound at all like your own as you lie there, helpless and shaking with pent-up desire and now unable to make yourself put your hand back where you need it the most.
This can go on for hours.
The worst part, aside from the fact that you love it and wouldn't have it any other way, is that you agreed to this. A contract with a demon is binding, after all.

Wonder if the idea that demons can be repelled by holy water comes from rabies.....organisms infected rabies behave erratically and violently, salivate at the mouth, all classic "symptoms" of demonic possession. But one key thing that rabies does that other pathologies don't is it causes the infected organism to be hydrophobic - react violently to water.

And that's really all there is to it. Satan has won. All of SATANS enemies are just dragging on in in their defeat, they are so blind they haven't even seen it yet. But they will. And they will ALL come to know SATAN as the one true Almighty.

I stopped myself from being possessed by explaining to the demon that I was too scrawny to rip people apart.

You may have discussed this before (I am new here) but possession whump is so so special to me. The possibilities……
a. whumpee is possessed somehow and accidentally hurts someone then feels all the feelings about it
b. whumpee is possessed but whoever’s controlling them doesn’t do anything super out of the ordinary so nobody realizes but they’re still trapped in their own mind just watching
c. Caretaker is possessed (becoming the whumper in this scenario) and hurts whumpee then both parties feel feelings
d. Even more that I don’t have time to write out but like UGH
(side note I also love the trope when two characters are both like important figures, and the whumpee thinks they’ve been captured as revenge for something they did, but they’ve actually been captured in revenge for something caretaker did and they’re being used against them.)
^^^^ this right here!
