it was a weird scene. it was a bad decision. no one is out here saying it was fine or normal or cute. but acting like chase is a pedo because of that one moment is such an obnoxiously bad-faith take.

the kid was dying (or thought she was iirc), and she asked him for a kiss because she wanted to feel like she’d had a first kiss before she died. he didn’t kiss her out of attraction. he wasn’t even thinking. it was a badly written moment designed for maximum discomfort and shock because that’s literally what house md does

can we like. stop pretending this is some proof he’s irredeemable or something. there are so many worse things done by characters in this show and y’all fixate on this like it’s the smoking gun...

stop flattening characters into one bad take. it’s lazy. it’s boring.

Deltarune chapter 4 spoilers!

I really don't know how to convey exactly what I feel about this into words but something about this scene really caught my eye so I'll try, this will probably be rambly, bear with me (or just scroll past this post its fine I'll likely delete this anyway)

I've seen people talking about how Kris chose to hug Ralsei in this scene by themselves, but I'd say its more than just that, because if you pay attention to their arm you notice that Kris isn't really hugging him. Looking at the split sprite, they seem to just have a hand on his shoulder

Throughout the game Kris can hug Ralsei multiple times. Theoretically if you really want you can hug him dozens of times in the tutorial alone and then I think at least twice more throughout the game, but that's the thing, it isn't Kris doing that, that's the player. Kris had zero input on the matter. If we are to take Asgore's words as fact (and also pay mind to how they don't really hug back when Toriel hugs them), Kris doesn't even really like hugs that much to begin with, so it leaves the question: If Kris was in control, would they really have done that? And then this scene comes in

Something about Kris trying to show care and give comfort in their own way, one that is different from the silly things the player might have made them do earlier on, something "smaller" and maybe a little awkward but really true and I wonder if Ralsei noticed. If he could tell that was really them or that something about this was different. If it stood out to him the same way seeing Kris play the organ did both to him and Susie. Something about Kris real self still managing to slip through the cracks in these small, brief moments and those moments sticking with their friends, becoming the most memorable and important ones rather than anything the player makes them do. About them loving Kris for the glimpses they get of who they really are, and what realizing that may make Kris feel later on

I’ve talked about how ppl rewrite Medusa to be the most perfect flawless victim ever and how that is a horrible message, so let’s talk about how Hera is sanitized and whitewashed to be a perfect victim as well. Mainly by making her get married against her will, hating Zeus from the get go and also that she was secretly actually helping Zeus’s victims all along rather than punish them (which is also gross).

Bc yes, Hera is a victim of domestic abuse, hell in the Iliad its like Zeus is going through a list of every form of abuse possible, he insults, gaslights, taunts and threatens her and outright tortures and beats her. With that said, Homer (or The Poet if you wanna be classy lol) still shows the complexity of their relationship. Bc while Zeus shoots down her demands and advice, there are still moments where he can’t deny her and he actually listens to her and does what she asks, we are told they had a loving relationship when they were younger and that by the time of the Trojan War their relationship worsened. We are told that Zeus is sexually attracted to Hera (more on that later) we are told that he only spares Ares bc he’s his son by Hera. We are told that Hera torturing Alcmene during her labour wasn’t bc she was jealous but bc she doesn’t want Heracles to be born and rule over her favorite cities.

So even when Zeus insults Hera and her authority/status as his wife and Queen, deep down he has this… weird sort of respect for her, not unconditional respect mind you bc Hera has to constantly remind him who she is to him lol

So how do modern retellings tend to portray their relationship?

Hera hates Zeus from the very beginning, bc you can’t have an abuse victim that loved her abuser at first bc that would mean she was asking for it. Can’t have Zeus be attracted to Hera bc a man can’t love his wife while also being a cheater, nuance who? Hera must be an old, past her prime shrewish wife for Zeus to cheat on her. Zeus must deeply despise his wife! Just ignore that he has the power and the means to divorce her if he truly hated her, can’t have an abuser actually love their victim bc that would show them as complex and nuanced. Hera never hurt any of Zeus’s lovers and victims, she actually has no flaws and never did anything selfish or cruel whatsoever and was actually trying to protect these women but then the big mean patriarchy portray her as an evil jealous wife, can’t have a victim who is deeply flawed and *gasp* did something that makes her unlikable! She has to be perfect, her actions should always be justified.

Just imagine if Max really dies in s5 (I hope not!!!) But then everyone gets to read the letter she wrote and Steve opens his and it just says:

My brother was madly in love with you.

(and then the rest of the season Steve goes on a rescue mission to find Billy in the upside down and saves him and then they save Max together- happy end)

We’ve been weirdly chill about finding out what we are.

But like, I guess that’s cause we’ve been doing this shit for years. We just didn’t know that’s what it was. Or that we weren’t fully the same person. Disassociating and switching, talking and thinking to ourselves. A lot of depersonalization and derealization.

And being existential about it won’t change anything for us. Best to learn to live with it and understand it.

Although our brain did feel soupy for the first few days after we accepted it. We got a lot of mild headaches. Trying to think differently at the same time too much for too long, doesn’t work for us it seems.

i have a nuanced answer, and this is essentially going to my love letter to my readers and an apology letter to them all wrapped in one, so im gonna put it under the cut.

for the most part i am "i always respond to comments" but sometimes...sometimes its a heart and i can heart back but it feels cheap (self worth issues, whatever)

and then theres a very specific fic of mine that briefly blew up, and the amount of comments was staggering enough for me to just

i had to go through and "mark all as read" just to kind of, function. i didnt understand what made this specific fic so popular, and theoretically i should be happy--and i was!

i was really really happy that people liked my fic, but it felt like A Lot.

it made me feel really bad, and useless and incapable, cuz a couple of those comments i really did want to reply to! but idk, anxiety or spoons or tism, whatever, it all felt overwhelming to get so many comments all at once. And then even when it died down, it felt weird to only reply back to the newer ones, so i just. didnt.

i know i can just go back and reply to them now but, idk. anxiety isn't rational. it all felt so very time-sensitive for no reason.

i really did love all those comments though. i read every single one, even if it felt like my throat was clogged. i loved those comments and i am very very happy that people liked my fic even a little bit.

So, wait. Okay. Wait.

So the name 'Ralsei' originates with 'Ralse', the name of a character meant to represent Toby in a video game made by one of his brothers in RPG Maker when they were kids, and predates UTDR entirely.

But then 'Ralsei' becomes 'Asriel', named for Azrael, the Islamic angel of death.

But THEN, 'Asriel' breaks down into 'AS' 'RIEL', in canon named by Asgore by combining the names 'Asgore' and 'Toriel', meaning that Toby must've derived the names 'Asgore' and 'Toriel' FROM 'Asriel'.

But then the name 'Toriel' is, itself, a joke on the word 'tutorial', since she's the tutorial character in Undertale.

We don't have a definite, confirmed reason for Asgore's name, but there's a few explanations out there ('Aegros', 'Sage or Murderer', etc).

Regardless HOW THE FUCK DOES TOBY GET ALL OF THIS OUT OF. RALSE. How does someone come up with THIS LEVEL OF INTERCONNECTED WORDPLAY.

...I do kinda wonder who owns the rights to the original monsters from the show.

Cause, you'd think it'd be Hanna-Barbera, now Warner, but another thing makes me less sure.

Because, you'd think the Godzilla: the Series ones from the 90s would also be owned by its own production company at Sony.

But the Toho website's subsection where they basically let people post what's essentially legitimatized fanfic had sections for the monsters from that series. Meaning that presumably they have some sort of legal ownership of them, at least in part.

And, for further reference, CH Greenblat wanted to include this show-original character, created solely by HB for their I Dream of Jeannie animated series, in Jellystone, but couldn't because of rights conflicts"

Meaning, presumably the parent company that produced Jeannie has some rights stake in that, meaning also that might be the case with HB's Godzilla series...
