A Phoenix is NOT easily defeated!

So, I announced a few days ago that I was suspending MediaMiner posts of Phoenix: Reignited for two main reasons:

Their editor breaks formatting for things like italics

I get no notifications when I get a comment

Well, the other day I noticed Fanfiction.net was also breaking formatting, and I found a fix for it. I thought, what the hell, I'll see if that fixed formatting works on MediaMiner, and lo! It does! So, that solves one of the two issues that cost me the platform. But… what about the other? If I could solve that…

Well, it turns out MediaMiner doesn't have a true comment system; it backports comments to a forum. I found the URL to the actual forum. I then wrote a web scraper that sorts it by most recent, polls the first three pages (the 90 most recently-commented chapters, and currently Page 1 goes all the way back to August, so that should be plenty safe.) It parses every thread looking for Phoenix: Reignited and if it finds one, yanks out all the relevant data. It then dumps that into an RSS feed on ThePhoenixSaga.com, and then I set up a free RSS monitoring automation on Zapier to check that RSS feed and email me if any new items are detected.

nuance: apparently, the archive rss feeds setup is such that only the first file contained in each item loads as an episode. so i figure this way y'all will get the 'teaser trailer' for any multi-part podfics and then you'll know if you like it enough to go find the rest of it :)

btw. i include the following information in my podfic item descriptions, so to make it easier to find the og fic and leave some love for the author!

How do you create a live feed blog? Does it involve the RSS Feed?

Yeah, RSS Feed and IFTTT. You can find instructions on Google. This is my first time trying it, though, so hopefully, it works as I expect. 😅

Added note: RSS on AO3 is unfortunately not entirely reliable, as it doesn't include all fanfictions in tag—I have no idea why.

And letting me find the news versus having it forced upon me when I’m trying to look at memes or the weather.

And having social media be a place to be social online and not the newest source of anxiety. Or the reason to worry about another data leak.

And not needing to have an account on a specific social media site to avoid losing contact with all friends.

International Radio Station Podcasts

Since the closure of Radioben.co.uk and Radio360.eu I've found that finding international radio station English service podcasts has become a bit of a challenge.

I used both of these services to listen to stations all over the world, from Thailand to Cuba, and, from Mongolia to Albania. All of these brought great pleasure, especially being able to learn about different countries, and cultures, whilst being on the road.

I don't have the technical knowhow to be able to produce such a service but I wanted to share with you some of my favourite feeds, that are still going.

Found out about RSS feeds and I'm just like "why are people not using these!?" I'm already having an easier time catching up to webcomics on hosting sites and people I follow on BSky that often get buried in the feeds (they don't give push notifs) When I get my webcomic page up, I'm definitely encouraging RSS usage!

Looking for anyone running ao3feeds. It seems zapier isn't receiving newly posted fics for the rssfeed to tumblr link post tasks. I'm not sure if it's related to works done recently by ao3 on the archive, but it happened 3 days ago.

If anyone knows more about the issue or has an alternative to zapier recommendation, please contact me. I'd really appreciate it.
