This just in tragedy has befallen the Carerra family. Crystalle Carerra sadly lost her life along with her son, Juan. The older sister to musician Raleigh Carerra was in a fatal car crash last night, reportedly due to a drunk driver.

Both her children, unfortunately, were in the car. The eldest, Juan, lost his life along with his mother, while Nicholas only suffered minor injuries. Officials said the mother and son "didn't even make it to the hospital, dying on the side of the road before paramedics arrived." Nicholas was rushed to Del Sol Valley General, where the press ambushed the ambulance. The child was reportedly unconscious.

As of this morning, Nicholas is in the custody of his next of kin: Raleigh and Kassandra. The couple is rumored to want to adopt Nicholas and has already put their lawyers to work on it. They even sent legal warnings to all media outlets that posted images of the car crash or Nicholas entering the hospital.

This devastating news has shaken Hollywood. Crystalle was more than the sister of a superstar. A shining star in her own right, Crystalle was an acclaimed dancer and choreographed several music videos. A devoted mother of two children she loved dearly and a fierce, protective older sister. She will be missed. Juan was a young man who would have graduated from high school next year.

This article seeks to provide insight into why these centers aren’t going to replicate ‘Silicon Valley’ any time soon.

Maybe the first point is to remind ourselves that Silicon Valley is not so much a geography as a ‘state of mind’. The actual geography of Silicon Valley is a very small part of The San Francisco Bay Area. It doesn’t for example include San Francisco where companies like Salesforce and Twitter are headquartered. nor Berkley where Uber is headquartered, with a University of the same name that is synonymous with ‘Open Source UNIX’. Still that hasn’t stopped the world at large using Silicon Valley and The San Francisco Bay Area interchangeably. It also doesn’t matter to the main thrust of this short commentary.

.. well they won’t if they attempt to compete with the Valley head on. Like in all competitive races, the winners in that competition will be those regions that redefine the landscape.

Sitting at the intersection of varied and sometimes unrelated things that are often forgotten, not easily replicated and definitely requires time, I have identified 10 reasons that Silicon Valley has succeeded. (There may be more - but 9 is a good number. Isn’t it?)

Also, to keep the post to a manageable length, I won’t drill down into deep detail on any of the items - but happy to if asked. I will also be following this post up with more detail around some of the points and issues I raise in future posts.

1) Venture Capital

We are moving into a world where this idea is beginning to break down. Historically though, the culture of the valley is long hours and hustle, no weekends - you just want to make it happen. It’s not holding up so well these days. More in another post.

I am going to move on from this point and will come back to it later, but the fact is that San Francisco ’67 had significant impact on shaping tech thinking in the Bay Area.

7) The Ecosystem of Financial Institutions, Lawyers and Government

This is why things like ‘valuations’ are so different when (say) a British company values your start up versus one from ‘Silicon Valley’. Before Silicon Valley, the local industry comprised Orchards. Yes it all started with the military and ‘tech’ but other industries were not dominant, say like Banking in NYC, Oil, Gas and Insurance in Houston, Movies in LA … Tech found its place in new and fertile pastures. This is particularly important when you get to a country like New Zealand where any tech business is going to be competing with other already dominant industries, such as (in the case of New Zealand), Dairy, Lumber and Tourism.

The parallels to why large corporations have a hard time with ‘innovation’ are clear. (This is a larger topic that I will come back to in another post.)

9) The History and Legacy

The Oberlin Collegiate Institute (later Oberlin College) was founded on groundbreaking values in 1833 when it became the first coeducational institution in the United States. Two years later in 1835, Oberlin cemented its progressive standards when the board of trustees adopted a policy allowing all students to receive an education “irrespective of color.”

George Boyer Vashon (1824-78,), born in Carlisle, PA, was Oberlin College’s first black graduate, receiving the A.B. degree in 1844. After finishing his studies, he returned to Pennsylvania to practice law, but was not allowed to be admitted to the bar because of his skin color. Vashon was admitted to the New York state bar in 1848, becoming New York’s first black lawyer. Vashon also had a notable career in education. He was a language teacher in Haiti, president of Avery College in Pittsburgh, PA, Howard University’s first black professor, and professor of mathematics and ancient and modern languages at Alcorn University.

Mary Jane Patterson (1840-94), was born in Raleigh, NC and later moved to Oberlin, OH with her family. She then attended Oberlin College and became the first black woman to ever receive an A.B. degree in 1862. After leaving Oberlin, Patterson dedicated her life to education. She was the assistant to fellow Oberlin graduate Fanny Jackson Coppin at Philadelphia’s Institute for Colored Youth (now the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania), and then taught at Washington D.C.’s Preparatory High School for Colored Youth (now Dunbar High School). She served as the school’s first black principal, and under her leadership the high school gained enrollment and added a teacher training program. Patterson continued to teach at the high school until her death. She also was very active in other organizations for people of color in D.C., including assisting the elderly, rescue work, and teaching organizations.

Three Trailblazing Oberlin Women

The Oberlin College Class of 1884 produced many talented and remarkable graduates. Included in this class are three black women: Mary Church Terrell, Anna Julia Cooper, and Ida Gibbs Hunt, who made their mark on the world in education, women’s rights, and became lifelong colleagues and friends.

Mary Eliza Church Terrell (1863-1954) was born in Memphis, TN and later moved to Oberlin, OH with her family, where she attended high school and then Oberlin College. After her education at Oberlin, she taught at Wilberforce University, and then studied in Europe for two years, becoming fluent in Italian, French, and German. When Terrell returned to the United States, she shifted her focus from her career in education to social activism. She became the first president of the National Association of Colored Women, fought for black women’s suffrage when the National American Women Suffrage Association was more focused on white women, and stood on picket lines to fight for the integration of businesses and schools. The Oberlin College main library is now named for Terrell, and her illustrious career and achievements can be studied at our digital exhibit.

Ida Alexander Gibbs Hunt (1862-1957) was born in Victoria, British Columbia, and later moved to Oberlin, OH. Hunt began her career after college as a teacher, but had to leave her position after her marriage in 1920, as married women were not seen as appropriate teachers for young people. She shifted her focus to worldwide peace issues and racial and gender equality. Hunt assisted W.E.B. DuBois organize Pan-African Congresses, and served as the primary French translator of the 1919 Paris Pan-African Congress, and co-chaired the 1923 London Pan-African Congress. She also organized the first black chapter of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) and served on the board of the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA.

Anna Julia Haywood Cooper (1858-1964) was born into slavery in Raleigh, NC. After completing her studies at Oberlin, Cooper moved to Washington, D.C. and taught Latin at the M Street High School. She left her position there due to her belief that black students should be able to have a classical education, instead of only being offered trade schooling, but later returned. Cooper was a speaker at the World’s Congress of Representative Women in 1893, and spoke at the first Pan-African Congress in 1900. She received a Ph.D. from the Sorbonne in 1924 (at the age of 65), which made her only the fourth black woman to hold a doctorate at that time. Cooper then became president of Frelinghuysen University, a school founded in D.C. to provide black students older than public school age access to schooling.

A - AU (My favorite AU for them)

Lawyer AU, like fucking imagine. Mina’s lawyer firm against Cordelia’s lawyer film and then Ray comes in the game and /softly/ the possibilities mamma mia. I’m already thinking about this.

An AU that I like for them is, as a what if of the actual events: the one where they didn’t end up together, being Goode-Ocean-Day endgame instead. I genuinely think that Mina and Ray are an A+ couple and they already love each other to pieces, they both need to be happy. But also I can’t stop myself from still wandering around the idea of Raleigh and Wilhemina grow to become the best of friends, holding in all that love they have for each other, even when Ray didn’t decided to be with her.

B - Baby (Do they want a family?)

Pretty much like with Cordelia and Misty, Raleigh had a hard time coming to terms with this stuff. However she was the one bringing it up after being together for 7 years. They decided to enjoy themselves and focus in their well-being, since Wilhemina and Raleigh were more worried about helping both to grow and heal. But I think having Goode-Day’s girls around, helped Raleigh to warm up to the idea.

When Raleigh asked Mina about this, both thought about it for a long time, because it reached a point that both really wanted to have that. They looked up into adoption and all, but in the end Wilhemina decided to be the one carrying the baby. Of course, they were very careful with this and took in count every single possible problem she could have.

Mina didn’t think ever in her life she was going to want a kid, but the stability her new job gave her and how everything was displayed before her made her be open to it. She knew for sure that if someone asked her back when she was in Los Angeles, she for sure would thought they went nuts.

Wilhemina is Eric’s official mom, but if we are talking about Goode-Ocean-Day AU, Misty is Eric’s mom.

C - Cuddle (Cuddler? How would they cuddle?)

They cuddles are very rare but appreciated. Usually is in bed, Mina’s head in Raleigh’s chest because that way they feel more close to each other in such a privy time. They came from a long way to do this and as the time passed by Wilhemina found it like a pain reliever, especially in times when she is at her lowest point.

When they started to live by their ‘own’, as in Raleigh moving in with Wilhemina, Madison and Queenie to the house next door, their cuddle game upgraded a bit more, but only when they are alone. In public they tend to be side by side, Mina’s arm laced with Ray’s and not much more.

D - Dates (What are dates like?)

Peaceful at most. They like to go to libraries, but also there’s something about Raleigh driving them anywhere that make it special. Raleigh wanted to bring Mina out for picnics, but never got to say something since she was worried about being something uncomfortable for Mina. However Wilhemina suggested it after Raleigh commented the thing when she asked about her childhood. After that a picnic date once in a while, in between coffee and books dates, is like a blessing.

They also enjoy quite dates at home, sometimes Mina watching Ray play Bloodborne or Dark Souls or even horror games. They have their share of good laughs.

F - Feelings (When did they first realize they had feelings for the other?)

Oh their chemestry was quite a thing since their first encounter. It didn’t take long for both to know they were cuckoo bananas for each other.

Raleigh was the first one to actually found that her feelings were stronger than she thought. She was out with Wilhemina, accompanying her in some errands she had to run, when everything hit her like a canon ball. For a moment she was helping her get some snacks in the supermarket and the next second, Raleigh was looking at her as if Wilhemina was holding the secret of the universe. It was something she didn’t think she would be able to feel again, after all that time, but she loved every second of that realization.

For Wilhemina was more like something that surprised her. She could count with one hand how many times she ‘fell’ in love with someone, every single time being this thing she saw coming from afar. But Raleigh made a difference. Her ways of caring for her and treating her and seeing her, everything was new and good. She just woke up one day by Raleigh’s side and decided that yes, she was very much in love with her; and then she scooted closer to her sleeping figure to keep at it, having Raleigh’s arm over her body almost immediately.

G - Gentle (Are they gentle? If so, how?)

For someone that is not used to them or doesn’t know them, hell the fuck not. 

But they are, in their own way, it’s all about the little gestures and the double meaning behind their words. What it can seem mean words or snarky remarks, they are absolutely not. When they are out of the eye of the rest, their gentleness shows much more through whispered words and different kisses.

H - Holding Hands (Do they like it? How often?)

Not really into holding hands, they prefer to lace their arms and walk like that, very much ‘old style-ish’. Is much more helpful for Mina, to be honest, since she has walk with her cane and being like that is an extra support, being there even when it’s not needed. 

I - Impression (What was their first impression of one another?)

As seen in ‘take my soul, not my body’ both were quite starstrucked with each other. 

Wilhemina found Raleigh interesting, mysterious and electrifying, and that drew her in almost in an instant. They met in a casual setting but the meeting wasn’t casual at all, connecting really fast.

Raleigh was pretty much in awe since the moment Wilhemina and her talked a few more words and then when she used Concilium without even knowing what she was doing? Wow that really got her wrapped around Mina’s finger unknowingly. 

J - Jealous (Would they ever get jealous? How would they act if they were jealous?)

Raleigh isn’t a jealous person, as I said in the other alphabet. She despise jealousy a lot.

Wilhemina in the other hand...she gets a bit fed up at times, but in very specific scenarios, however she is pretty confident about Raleigh’s feelings so once she have her arms around her everything goes away. At times she likes to joke about it, in her usual sarcastic tone, and she gets double smooches.

K - Kisses (How do they kiss?)

Raleigh always kiss like the world is going to end tomorrow, she is just like that, she has to pour every ounce of her feelings into it. Wilhemina is a sucker for these kisses, kissing her back with the same force even. That’s why they don’t kiss often in public, they get carried away pretty easily. But a times they share a quick peck when they know both are busy enough to not linger (or it lingers and it’s a bit unexpected but well). When they in public and they have the urge to kiss each other, a kiss on the cheek or in the back of the hand means as much as one in the lips for them.

They managed, with time, to slow down with the intensity and it’s actually one of those couples that you see kissing and think ‘okay that shit is cute, but it’s that allowed’. They also start to feel more comfortable kissing in public 

L - Love (Who says ‘I love you’ first?)

Wilhemina! It was after one of her appointments. That day she was really tired and in pain, so all her walls vanished, leaving her in a really soft state. Usually Raleigh drives back to the Academy after Mina’s appointments, but upon seeing her like that she decided to make the longest way back so she could collect herself a bit, since she knew her girlfriend didn’t like attention over herself. 

However, Mina noticed and she kinda broke down in tears for the first time because of everything bottling up in her. Raleigh gave her time to let whatever she was holding back that long and between sobs Wilhemina told her that she loved her for real but she felt like she couldn’t compete with how Cordelia or Misty loved Raleigh. 

Ray pulled over a park and decided to take Mina to get some fresh air, always holding her as close as she could. Once they were in a bench, Raleigh pulled her close to her to kiss her and take her time to calm her down, telling her that she didn’t need to compete with anyone since she was the one that had her heart now. She didn’t hesitate and gave her another big kiss before saying ‘I love you back’.

M - Memory (What’s their favorite memory of the relationship?)

It’s not something big or really important, just a little something. Winter was almost done and they were getting ready to go get some things done around the Academy, having late breakfast and all, when Zoe walked in the kitchen asking for both their help.

It was something silly but for some reason, Zoe didn’t want to ask Cordelia to help her with because sometimes she got in momma hen mode and decided to just ask someone else. 

Mina thought she had to leave since she still didn’t warm up to any of the ‘main girls’ but when Zoe asked her to stay, so they have more opinions, it was like...it was nice. 

Afterwards Mina couldn’t help but have a little cute grin for being helpful while Raleigh kept on having a lot of feelings because of this. She knew how shy Zoe was, so having two of her best girls being that close even for a moment was enough for her to feel over the top.

N - Nicknames (What do they call each other?)

Raleigh and the nicknames, she has assigned for Wilhemina: Mina, darling and beautiful. Sometimes she goes an extra mile and calls her mi reina (my queen in Spanish), but only when she is in really soft hours! Although Raleigh loves to call her by her full name, she says it holds a something unique.

Wilhemina always goes for honey or dearie when it comes to Ray. She prefers to call her by her full name, since everyone shorten her name. She is thinks her name is beautiful as it is. But sometimes, when they are intimate with each other, Raleigh joke that Mina should call her god since she let it out so much.

O - Orange (What color reminds them of each other?)

Raleigh think that okay, purple is obviously the color Wilhemina represents better, but since she left her one of her navy blue shirts...well, navy blue is the color that reminds her of her the most. For Mina is the dark red for some reason, not that she ever saw her with something of that color, is just a feeling and it warms her up every time she sees that color.

P - Proposal (Who proposes and how?)

It was Raleigh! Well, more like a proposal was something more like a promise. They were pretty cool being common-law partners, they didn’t think they needed a paper saying they were something when they already knew it. But Raleigh decided to at least being more formal by giving Wilhemina her mom’s ring nonetheless. She said it was the promise that she won’t ever stop loving her, no matter what. They kept it a secret for a few months before Rowan decided to visit and spill the beans, innocently, upon seeing the ring since ‘none told him his sister got married’. Coco almost had a heart attack.

Q - Quiet (Do they like to talk, or are they more of an actions type of person?)

They have their share of talking moments, but they are both the actions type of people. It’s something that always go unspoken, they are good at pick details from each other (as when they met) and only in the worst cases is when they need verbal reassurance.

R - Rich (Do they spoil one another?)

Not really, but they are always attentive of each other, in case they are in need of whatever so they can provide. Mina thinks more before doing something or buying something, because Ray is always ready af to just spend money in whatever they might need. However they like to surprise each other with tiny stuff from time to time: books are always the perfect choice but Ray likes to pick some jewelry for Mina from time to time.

S - Sleep (What are their sleep habits?)

Raleigh’s sleep habits are shit. I said this several times and she is trying to get a hold of herself, but is really hard to do so when she has too many things to think about.

Wilhemina is like a clock, she has everything scheduled and she can’t help but keep the routine she always had even now at the Academy, where everything has another pace. Sometimes she tries to accompany Ray as much as she can, but other times she just let her be, knowing soon she will follow her or just join her for breakfast.

Wilhemina took her time to try and fix Raleigh’s sleeping habits, or at least start to regulate them a bit. She tried her share of ‘normal’ methods as making her teas, trying to tire her out with sex and even trying her hand at tonics and potions (with so much help from Zoe and Mallory). But she managed to help her by just being the one holding Raleigh, her head to her chest so she could hear her heartbeat and caress her back.

They are still working in this, but Raleigh had managed to sleep much more thanks to this. Mina held this little achievement as something really important, overall because it’s something that neither Cordelia nor Misty achieved.  

T - Touch (Their favorite place to touch?)

Raleigh’s favorite place to touch is Mina’s face, like cupping her cheeks and caressing her jawline reminds her how beautiful she is and how much softness she held inside. She secretly loves Mina’s hair and maybe Mina has noticed, since she twice let her help her brushing it. And also Ray’s hands always find their right place in Mina’s lower back, knowing how that little place can be one that draws a lot of reaction from her lover.

Wilhemina’s favorite place is obviously Ray’s arms. She can’t get enough of them, loving to caress them with her fingers ever so softly and also knowing how she feel safe between them (+ Ray is stronk thanks to her routine, so that’s a big ass point!). She also to touch that place behind Ray’s ear that make her nuzzle her face against her hand like a lazy cat, getting the softest smile out of her just by doing that.

U - Unencumbered (What do they do to relax?)

Relaxing together always mean reading together or working in projects by each other side, even when they aren’t doing the same thing. Just being together put the other at ease. They also like to play rounds of ‘random questions’ to test each other’s brain + playing horror games together. Mina isn’t scared at all and Ray find them funny, laughing each time there’s something scary, so they destress a lot.

I already said that alone, Raleigh likes to play videogames because it helps her with her anxiety. For Mina, when she is alone, she likes to prepare herself a cup of coffee and take a nap afterwards. Sleep always helps her ease her mind.

V - Virgin (What’s the sex like?)

After Wilhemina stopped from blacking out every time they wanted to do something else than making out, sex was: exquisite. Mina liked it rough, both giving and receiving, plus Raleigh’s intensity equal a bomb. They have a lot of communication, because as much as they want Mina’s back is something to take in count and Ray’s always ultra careful to make her comfortable even when they are at it. They both are the biggest tops out there but let me tell you that Mina has her own way to make Ray just give in and let her take the lead. As much as this happens, they try to have a balanced relationship and they have a lot of talks, since Mina have more than a few kinks that implies stuff that are big no-no’s for Ray.

W - Wedding (What’s the wedding like? Big, small?)

They got married quite some years after they had Eric, never having the need of having to throw a big thing or something. Coco insisted, as Raleigh and Wilhemina’s sister-in-law that she was, to prepare them a little ceremony just with their close friends. Mina suggested to take Eric and going to Las Vegas to get married, like running away from whatever madness Coco had planned, but Ray knew she was thankful for someone putting much thought in them. The wedding was small, in the backyard of the Academy and was Cordelia the one that married them. There were tons of food and they managed to bring Mina’s dad and older brother (+ his little family of three) to the wedding as well!

Y - Yearn (How do they cope with being away from the other?)

Through objects! When Ray have to go on a trip for the Coven, she always brings with her one of Mina’s scarfs and one of her hair ties. Having her perfume around is what actually soothes her, so she also likes to ‘casually’ lend Mina her leather jacket so that way she can be near somehow.

For Mina goes with using Ray’s shirts from time to time, but what she likes the most is still using the pajamas Ray lent her the night they met. Ray never asked to have them back and didn’t seem to care, so it was free real state since then.   

Z - Zoo (What kind of pet would they have, if any?)

They have Sidonia and Oberon! Wilhemina brought Oberon to New Orleans with her, so they are quite okay with them around. Raleigh always have to keep an eye on Sidonia so she doesn’t hurt Mina or something, since once she started to be less a puppy and more and adult dog she got a bit rough. Oberon always liked Raleigh, since day one, so he wasn’t much of a problem.

They got a companion for Oberon, obviously called Titania, since Queenie and Madison insisted in having another cat in the house and well Ray wasn’t like Cordelia, so she gave in pretty easily. When Eric was born, the first few months were a bit hellish for the rest of the house since the three of them (Sidonia, Oberon and Titania) got a bit overprotective over the baby.

how tall are they? despite her mother and siblings being giant, she took after her father and is only like 5’4

how do they tend to dress? very 60s/70s hippy! she is a thrift store fiend and loves paisley prints & florals. growing up she relied heavily on hand me downs from her siblings and had to make do with more ‘vintage’ attire compared to others her age

do they like how they look? currently, yes, but as a preteen/teen, not really. she was a gymnast for the longest time (a family tradition literally all of her siblings and her mother did gymnastics, her sister was the only one who carried it into college) and spent a lot of her time comparing herself to her competition. in doing so she ruined her self-image, but with shane’s help, and a really really great english counselor, she managed to overcome it.

are they an only child or do they have any siblings? four older siblings from her mother’s ex-husband, including my open heart mc dr. maria volkova. the others are mikhail (maria’s twin, both 26), vasily (31), and the oldest is pavel (37).

are they a cat person or a dog person? dog, hands down. especially elderly dogs, which is what she and her mom would adopt when she was younger/living at home

what are their favourite movies/tv shows? okay so she doesn’t really watch tv because she doesn’t have time, but when she was little she was obsessed with watching star trek reruns and had a crush on will ryker

do they have any hidden talents? like her sister, she has a connective tissue disorder that causes hypermobile joints and can and will put her legs behind her head and walk on her ass cheeks to gross out shane at every given opportunity

do they believe in love at first sight? not really. love is something that grows over time, and while some people meet and have a really strong connection that flourishes quickly, the majority of the population isn’t so lucky.

what was their dream job as a kid? is it still their dream? she’s sung ever since she was little, but was very adamant about being an astronaut when she grew up. because of this she studied aerospace engineering in college, but wasn’t nearly as passionate about building aircrafts as she was about making music.

have they ever been in trouble with the law? in high school she protested a lot of things because she’s from a small, quite conservative town and is the exact opposite of that, and one of her protests involved trespassing on the football field, chaining herself to the end goal, and refusing to leave because their superintendent cut the art budget in favor of remodeling the field. long story short, the police were called and her mother was not happy.

Last summer, Sophie Hartman was fixated on her 6-year-old adopted daughter Carmel possibly showing signs of early puberty.

The 31-year-old single mom from Renton, Washington, scheduled an appointment at Seattle Children’s Hospital with a pediatric endocrinologist, a doctor specializing in glands and the hormones they produce, according to a Renton Police probable-cause affidavit.

Hartman, a white, Jesus-loving former missionary, strapped Carmel—a little Black girl born in Zambia—into a wheelchair and rolled her into a medical room, where they met with the endocrinologist. Carmel was “a very handicapped child” who was showing “cyclical symptoms” such as a “discharge” in her underwear, Hartman told the doctor. The symptoms were occurring for four straight days around the same time every month, she added.

Carmel went through a battery of medical exams, including blood work and X-ray imaging. The doctor found “modest clinical findings of early puberty,” but not enough to confirm Carmel was indeed accelerating into womanhood.

During a follow-up appointment at Seattle Children’s in October, another endocrinologist ran more tests on Carmel. The doctor found no signs of active puberty in the child, but informed Hartman about two treatments used to suppress pubescence. One involved giving Carmel injections; the other option was more drastic, requiring “surgically lacerating” Carmel’s skin with a scalpel to insert an implant used to suppress early puberty.

The doctor warned Hartman that the implant would be difficult to remove after it was inserted into the skin. Yet she was “emphatic” about getting the implant for Carmel even though it wasn’t medically necessary, the physician later told Renton Police Detective Adele O’Rourke.

On March 17, O’Rourke met with Hartman in her home. During a recorded interview, police say, Hartman admitted she wanted the surgery for Carmel. “Even though doing an implant is more invasive, it really isn’t that big of a deal,” Hartman told O’Rourke, according to the probable-cause affidavit. “I think that would be better.”

After doctors ruled out ovarian cysts as the cause for her daughter’s alleged symptoms, Hartman said she wanted to proceed with the implant. “I was like great,” Hartman allegedly said to the detective, recalling her last conversation with the endocrinologist. “Let’s get this on the schedule.”

Authorities didn’t give Hartman the chance.

The same day, Washington’s Department of Child, Youth, and Families placed Carmel and her older sister, Miah, whom Hartman also adopted, into protective custody. Hartman’s quest to stifle Carmel’s alleged early puberty is just one of several bizarre episodes documented in a probable-cause affidavit that led King County prosecutors to charge Hartman last month with two second-degree felony counts: assault on a child and attempted assault on a child.

According to the charging documents, Hartman subjected Carmel to “unnecessary surgical interventions and restraints” and also attempted to “substantially escalate” her daughter’s medical treatment by requesting “increasingly invasive and unnecessary medical procedures.”

The charges, which Hartman denies and to which she has pleaded not guilty, landed with a thud in the sometimes tight-knit world of white, American Evangelicals who adopt children from abroad. But the case also brought attention to the obscure crime of medical child abuse, in which a primary caregiver forces a child to undergo unnecessary treatment.

“What I am reading in the arrest report doesn’t sound at all like my friend,” Shannon Dingle, a single mom from Raleigh, North Carolina, who also has adopted African children and met Hartman in 2016 at an adoption conference in Seattle, told The Daily Beast.

Dingle said she and Hartman became friends and have remained in constant contact via text messaging and online chatting the past five years, as well as meeting in person during Hartman’s trips to Raleigh.

She still believes in Hartman’s innocence.

“How we got to the point that Sophie is being blamed for being abusive by having medical procedures that medical teams had to approve is something I don’t understand,” Dingle said. “It feels like a lot of responsibility is being put on Sophie that were team decisions.”

In addition to Dingle, Hartman has at least one well-renowned medical child abuse expert in her corner. Dr. Eli Newberger, a former Harvard medical school pediatrics professor who founded the child protection program at Boston Children’s Hospital, wrote to prosecutors on May 17 in an attempt to discourage them from filing charges against Hartman. However, legal experts believe there’s a strong case against the Washington mother.

Lawrence Gostin, a Georgetown University national health-law professor, told The Daily Beast that he reviewed the allegations in Hartman’s case and found authorities acted appropriately in removing her daughters from her care and investigating her for medical child abuse.

“The first thing you have to do in a case like this is ensure the safety and the well-being of the child,” Gostin told The Daily Beast. “Putting children under medical procedures that are unnecessary is just as harmful, and maybe more so, than physically abusing a child.”

Efforts to reach Hartman for this story were unsuccessful. Her attorneys Robert Flennaugh II, Jessica Goldman, and Adam Shapiro did not respond to phone messages and emails containing detailed questions. But in a previous joint statement released when she was charged, Hartman’s lawyers insisted prosecutors did not have a case against their client.

“These charges are based on false statements and misrepresentations of the medical record by a doctor at Seattle Children’s Hospital who has never seen the child or spoken with Ms. Hartman,” the statement said. “Ms. Hartman is innocent of these charges.”

Dr. Rebecca Wiester, medical director of Seattle Children’s Protection Program, is the doctor Hartman’s lawyers referenced in their statement. She penned a Feb. 21 letter to Washington child protection services that was co-signed by Carmel’s primary physicians. The three-page memo outlined their concerns about the danger Hartman was putting her daughter in. “It is not necessary to know the motivation of the caregiver, only the outcome of the behavior,” Wiester wrote. “The risk to [Carmel] is profound in this situation.”

Wiester declined an interview through Seattle Children’s spokeswoman Kathryn Mueller, who noted Washington health-care providers are required by law to report suspected cases of child abuse. “The health and safety of our patients is Seattle Children’s highest priority,” Mueller said. “Out of respect for privacy, we will not comment about specific cases.”

Based on a referral from child-welfare investigators, Detective O’Rourke led a four-month criminal investigation into Hartman. That included poring over hundreds of pages of medical records and interviewing dozens of medical professionals, physical therapists, and teachers who interacted with Hartman and Carmel on a regular basis, according to the 21-page probable-cause affidavit.

Renton Police Department Investigations Commander David Leibman and King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office spokesman Casey McNerthney declined comment for this story. “We’re going to let the court documents speak for themselves,” McNerthney said.

But their findings painted a disturbing picture of a woman who constantly sought medical treatment for her daughter even as she burnished her public profile.

Between 2017 and 2018, they concluded, Hartman convinced physicians at two hospitals, including Seattle Children’s, to surgically insert tubes into Carmel’s digestive organs to help nourish her and expel bowel movements. This, they say, was solely based on the mom’s account that her daughter had trouble swallowing, had chronic vomiting episodes, had excessive diarrhea, and had debilitating bouts of constipation.

Since being removed from Hartman’s care, they added, Carmel—who is identified by her initials in the affidavit and charging document since she is a minor—was eating food like a normal person, and the tubes were set to be removed.

Hartman also forced Carmel to wear orthotics, gait trainers, and ankle and leg braces since she was 2 years old, police say, adding that the mother also regularly strapped the girl to a wheelchair for long periods. The mom ignored directives that Carmel needed normal activities to develop appropriate muscle strength and physical development, according to doctors who were interviewed by investigators.

Meanwhile, teachers told detectives that Carmel had no problem walking, running, and performing normal childhood activities at school when she wasn’t under Hartman’s supervision.

Finally, Hartman claimed Carmel was diagnosed with alternating hemiplegia of childhood, or AHC, a rare neurological disease that causes repeated, prolonged episodes of paralysis, by leading neurologists at the Duke University Institute for Brain Sciences. In a recorded statement, Dr. Mohamed Mikati, Duke’s chief of pediatric neurology, told O’Rourke that Carmel does not have the genetic mutation that causes AHC and that he relied on Hartman’s descriptions of Carmel’s symptoms to make his diagnosis. Spokespeople for Mikati and Duke Health did not respond to emails requesting comment.

If there were any doubt behind the scenes about the nature or extent of Carmel’s illnesses, her mother’s public posture suggested otherwise.

Throughout Carmel’s ordeal, Hartman invited donations and routinely garnered publicity, the probable-cause affidavit states. She wrote a book about her experience traveling to Zambia for missionary work and returning with her two girls, and was a featured author at a Barnes and Noble meet and greet in 2016. Local media outlets published and produced human interest stories about Carmel, as Hartman promoted a social media presence for her daughter by creating an Instagram account and a private Facebook group so people could follow the little girl’s daily activities, according to the probable-cause affidavit.

In 2018, the Make-A-Wish Foundation arranged for Carmel, her mom, and her sister to travel to a ranch in Oregon to ride horses, per the affidavit. Police allege the trip was paid from donations to the nonprofit. Hartman also gave a speech about Carmel at a Make-A-Wish fundraiser. A friend and Hartman’s congregation at Pursuit NW Church in Snohomish, Washington, raised $15,661 and $30,583, respectively, so that Carmel’s mom could purchase a handicapped accessible SUV.

Press accounts burnished an image of Hartman as a single mom struggling to care for a severely sick kid. But police say her own words suggested she may be someone who is prone to making things up.

As a result of a search warrant for her house, Renton Police investigators took Hartman’s personal journals and found pages in which she described lying in the past about injuries and illnesses she sustained as a teen, the probable-cause affidavit states. In one passage about her freshman year of high school, Hartman wrote that she “used a pen to bruise my hand and faked a broken hand,” as well as not telling the truth that she had “mono and meningitis.” On another page, Hartman allegedly indicated that she was “angry” and “abusive” with her children.

“Oh Lord, what have I become,” she wrote in the journal, according to the affidavit. “Who is this bad soul? It’s me.” She also allegedly wrote on a loose piece of paper: “When it comes to suffering, I am a compulsive liar/exaggerator.”

As law-enforcement authorities built their case against Hartman between March and May, her lawyers brought in Newberger, the Boston-based child-abuse expert, to bolster her defense—and debunk the findings of Wiester and the other Seattle Children’s pediatricians.

Newberger claimed he reviewed the medical records and witness statements mentioned in the probable-cause affidavit, according to a May 17 letter he wrote to King County deputy prosecuting attorney Celia Lee.

“Duke medical staff, third party witnesses, and videos of Carmel corroborate significant symptoms that were documented with assiduous care and accuracy by Ms. Hartman,” Newberger wrote. “The medical records show that Ms. Hartman did not simply invent symptoms.”

In a brief phone call, Newberger told The Daily Beast he could not comment about his findings because he expected to be called as a defense witness. He said he was referred to Hartman’s lawyers by a prominent legal scholar who has written about medical child abuse. “I reviewed the information and made an informed decision within my ethical threshold,” Newberger said.

Legal experts, on the other hand, argue King County prosecutors have documented enough evidence of medical child abuse to present a strong case against Hartman.

“The criminal procedure against the mom is drastic,” Gostin, the Georgetown professor, said. “But if the facts are as alleged, it is a legitimate prosecution.” Taking Hartman’s daughters into protective custody was also justified, he added.

Despite having her kids taken away and being criminally charged for child abuse, Hartman hasn’t spent a day in jail. She participated in her June 3 arraignment hearing via Zoom from her home; King County Judge Tanya Thorp set her bail at $100,000.

On June 10, Hartman was administratively booked after posting her bond, a process that allows a person to show up to the King County jail to be fingerprinted and photographed and be immediately released upon payment of bail. In addition, she was allowed to have supervised visits with her daughters in April and May, and Thorp granted her continued visitations while her case is pending. According to the probable-cause affidavit, doctors kept Carmel under observation for 16 days after removing her from Hartman; during that time, the girl walked and ate food normally without any medical issues.

Meanwhile, fellow Evangelicals, neighbors, and friends are either distancing themselves from Hartman or else refusing to believe that she could be so cruel to her adopted daughter.

Russell Johnson, Pursuit NW Church’s head pastor, told The Daily Beast that he and other church leaders have not seen or heard from her in the last year. “As were so many others, the leadership of the Pursuit NW was horrified to read the charges against Sophie Hartman,” he said in an email statement. “The Pursuit NW has a zero-tolerance policy for child abuse. We pray for these precious children and that justice be done.”

Matt Dimeo, who lives in the house next-door to Hartman, was more equivocal. He described her as a “good gal” and a “very nice person,” ultimately declining to opine on the accusations against her.

“Whether I am surprised or not, it doesn’t make a difference,” Dimeo said. “We are going to trust the system, and hopefully it is a positive situation for the children.”
