Ok. I apologize in advance because these are just half baked midnight thoughts, but I just rewatched Sinners for the second time in a few days and I’m obsessing over it.
I’ve seen a lot of great discussion online about Remmick and his hive mind vampire cult as a metaphor for cultural appropriation and the way white culture absorbs marginalized—especially Black—cultures’ creativity and beauty but only wants to use & exploit it without giving a fuck about the people who created it. Which, yes! And I love that blues music with its deep ties to African roots, as well as being an expression of both the pain and resilience of Black people, is what saved Sammie and the group and defeated the vampire clan.
But I wish there was more discussion about Annie and her root work! Now, I am FAR from an expert on root work, hoodoo, or voodoo. But the little I know about it, I think is so amazing! The syncretic African religions and practices of the American South like New Orleans voodoo and the root work that Annie does have just as deep and meaningful ties to the ancestors and the West African homeland as blues! There’s a reason almost every blues song has something in it about mojo. Or going down to the crossroads. They are deeply intertwined!
And it’s Annie’s intuition that saves the group from initially inviting Remmick into the club. AND her knowledge of the supernatural that saves the group by knowing how to fight the vampires!
Smoke is very skeptical about her magic—and bitter that it failed to save their infant daughter—but he still wears Annie’s mojo bag out of love and devotion. And it turns out it really did protect him! It saves him from being bit by Stack. And that moment when he takes it off to ambush the Klan because he’s ready to join Annie and their baby after this last stand…it’s so powerful!
Anyways, I don’t know if this is coherent. I just love Annie! And I was so excited to see root work and hoodoo/voodoo portrayed in such a beautiful way that felt so authentic and honest, rather than demonizing and misportraying it as Hollywood usually does. Even Annie speaking the African language (I apologize, I don’t know which language specifically. Subtitles said Yoruba. I hope that’s correct) was a really beautiful touch. It’s clear that Coogler and his team did their research and approached it with a lot of respect.
And Wunmi Mosaku gave such a stellar performance as Annie and looked drop dead gorgeous while doing it!!
Any folks who have real knowledge about root work and hoodoo or voodoo, please feel free to school me! And to expand on this! I’d love to learn more and hear what practitioners thought of its portrayal in the movie!

My current pet peeve is anyone saying that Jennifer Kale claiming that she walked the road and that the road is real will be a falsehood - her spreading misinformation. Seriously, gaslighting the Black female character is not it.
The. Road. Is. Real.
Billy created a real place. With real effects on the people involved in it. Wanda created real children. Billy is one of them. The Scarlet Witch and Wiccan are capable of creating their own realities. These are not fake after the fact. There are real effects on the people of Westview from Wanda's reality. Imagine how they must have to contend with ptsd from a 'fake' reality. They probably still live together so that they don't feel crazy. Their neighbours validate their experiences.
So much of witchcraft is belief. Billy and Wanda have enough power to make their beliefs fully realised quicker and with nuance and automation. Gaslighting witches is saying that they are crazy to think that what they believe is true.
Jennifer healed Billy with water, moonlight and incantation! Generations of rootwork training from her African-American ancestors!
Anyway, Wanda dismantled her hex, but I'm not convinced that Billy dismantled his road just by putting a solid lid on it. It probably no longer glows blue with his magic, but I bet it exists if another witch's belief seeks it out.
The song itself has created a new belief, no matter the con Agatha thinks it is. In my opinion, the song and the road it leads to continue to be real enough. They both represent hope for wretched witches after all.
Anyway, recommended reading these wonderful books about root work in the Gullah-Geechee culture (Root Magic by Eden Royce) or about root magic in an African-American family with a generational curse uncannily similar to Alice Wu's family (The Legendborn Cycle by Tracy Deonn).

Would you like to find a way into the lost world and forgotten art of Hoodoo Rootwork and Conjure?
Are you looking for a modern guide on traditional African-American folk magic to cast powerful spells, craft conjuring oils and mojo bags, and build mighty altars to guarantee positive outcomes in your love life and professional endeavors?
Hoodoo was born out of sorrow and desperation, as a weapon and a defense, from the faith and resilience of the African slaves that adapted their religious tradition to the treacherous New World. As the world changed, Hoodoo adapted incorporating Native American herbal healing traditions and European religions and magical traditions, building a syncretic powerful folk magic system that works!
First prohibited, then ridiculed and commodified, Hoodoo has always been shrouded in secrecy and passed on quietly from generation to generation for fear of reprisal, contempt, and abuse and to this day is hard to find reputable sources on conjure and Rootwork. But don’t be discouraged!
I am proud to present The Hoodoo Bible: The 7-in-1 Root Doctor’s Companion to Black Folk Magic: an in-depth, all-encompassing, powerful 7-books-in-1 bundle that has recorded our rich heritage of herbal magic, traditional rootwork, and divination practices.
More exhaustive than any other book on the market, thoroughly researched and written with ease of use in mind, The Hoodoo Bible will accompany you through the spiritual path that our ancestors have beaten for us to explore the potent and practical magic of Hoodoo to claim justice, invoke protection, and find love, luck, and success.
With over 1000 authentic Hoodoo workings, these seven volumes will bring Hoodoo alive to budding rootworkers and adept practitioners alike:
The first volume will explore the history, culture, principles, fundamentals, and ethics of Hoodoo, giving you the theoretical groundwork you need to master the craft.
With the second volume the fun really begins! This practical how-to Hoodoo guide for beginners has everything you need to start practicing Rootwork and Conjure.
By the end of the third volume, you can start to call yourself a Root Doctor. With 275+ magical herbs, roots, spices, and curios, this book will help you craft powerful conjuring oils, spiritual baths and floor washes, magical teas and tonics, herb bundles and garlands to accomplish amazingly mighty Rootwork.
In the fourth volume you will find 30+ money spells, 25+ love spells, fertility spells, healing spells, and justice spells, with easy step-by-step instructions including a special chapter on inscribed spells and a complete guide on crossroads spells.
The fifth volumedelves into advanced spellcasting and conjure, teaching you how to conjure spirits, protect your home, banish your enemies, get revenge, and lay sneaky tricks. It includes a special chapter on graveyard spells and foot track magic.
In the sixth volumeyou will explore Hoodoo divination with step-by-step techniques for bone throwing, dice casting, and Hoodoo tarot. With a special chapter on dream divination and omens.
The seventh and last volume explores candle magic. This complete guide will teach you how to build an altar and use the magic of fire and the psalms to achieve your goals, be it money, success, luck, or love.
Applying Hoodoo magic to everyday life will help you achieve your goals in your private and professional life and along the way you will discover that working the roots has also sharpened your intuition, enriched your life, and prepared you for whatever may come your way.
So are you ready to discover the lost world and forgotten art of Hoodoo Rootwork and Conjure?

This morning I was walking out of my doctor's office when the words "South wind" entered my head. The words seemed unrelated to my other thoughts. It was a still day, no wind.
I wondered, what does the South wind do?
This afternoon, Alice Walker explained:

"That the South wind shall scorch their bodies and make them wither and shall not be tempered to them. That the North wind shall freeze their blood and numb their muscles and that it shall not be tempered to them. That the West wind shall blow away their life's breath and will not leave their hair grow, and that their fingernails shall fall off and their bones shall crumble. That the East wind shall make their minds grow dark, their sight shall fail and their seed dry up so they shall not multiply."

That's Magic
The most Magical thing I've ever done was heal myself. Shifting, twisting, changing, and rearranging the thoughts and ideologies passed down to me. I alchemized my brain.
I turned every insecurity and dysfunction I witnessed or possessed into a superpower. My spells were journal prompts I created for myself, always needing to go back to the drawing board. I understood that no preacher man or words from a Bible was going to rescue me. I can only save myself.
My mind needed to rise above the pain so the Kingdom inside of me could sustain.
The most magical thing I've ever done was ask, “Why?”. Why did the lineage I came from behave so poorly? Why didn't their emotional well-being ever mature, or bloom passed the age of pain? I vowed to never be the same.
My seed would never experience abandonment, never see a domestic violent relationship. I vowed to honor my role as a mother, a leader, and a creator. I created a safe haven for myself and my family. Love, joy, and laughter are experienced here daily.
I alchemized my soul. I am nicer to myself when I'm wrong. Hugging my inner child while humming familiar songs. I transformed into somebody that I needed when I was young.
And That's Magic!

Using Bells In Your Practice.

In this post I wanted to give you an option for using bells. But it's not apart of Hoodoo but can be used in your spiritual practice.
Experienced spiritual workers and magic practitioners often keep musical instruments on their altars. These could be anything from drums to singing bowls, rattles, these specific instrument that you can find all over, in all sorts of religions and magical paths: Bells like rattles are used to cleanse, protect, drive away the bad, and more. Now there are all types of religions uses them. There used with other instruments like a rattles. In Vodou we use them both.
(see my post on rattles)

This bell is from UrbanGurviMamaShop on etsy
Cleansing A Space Before Ritual Work:
Bright, clear tones help remove negative or stagnant energies from an area. Before you perform a spell or ritual, ring a bell while declaring your space cleared. If you wish, you can incorporate sound cleansing into a broader cleansing practice I use a rattle it traditional, but you can add smoke cleansing with incense, or burning a cleansing candle.
The clear, healing tone of a bell can have a few different effects. The bell's vibrations can help banish unwanted spirits and/or negative energies, with prayer (don't forget that) it can call in positively, desired energetic influences, and/or simply clear stagnant energy in any space throughout one’s home. Sound affects energy on a physical level—because sound is energy—and so the bell is both a physical and a symbolic tool in any practice.
How To Use To Cleanse: Ring it at least four times in each room, preferably with the doors and windows open and while burning cleansing incense. If you are not able to burn things where you live, then a bell can be a great solution for energy cleansing without smoke or fire.
Driving Away Evil: Evil spirits are said to hate -- or at least be annoyed by -- the sound of a bell just like they hate the sound of a rattle. This may go back as far as to the belief that spirits. (the malevolent ones) hate iron.
(This is actually true) When bells were made of iron, ringing them would drive evil out of an area. In other traditions, any kind of loud sound was believed to chase away dark forces. Simply ringing a bell loudly is enough to drive some bad spirits away, but don't get it wrong as I mentioned in a previous post this won't rid you if demonic or bad spirits or high level dark energies by it self prayer is important.
You can also use other tools like blessed candles dressed in holy oil, a room spray, or floor wash (see post on that) alongside with a bell or a preferred instrument. Give your floors a good wash from the back of your home to the front with the floor wash, you can use a spray in each room of your home, you can add a blessed can light. As you do these things pray, say a prayer while ringing your bell while declaring that all bad spirits and or energies must leave. You can also call a ordained person to do the prayer then you can go back with a bell and incense to rid the remanding energies.
Attracting Good Energies: Sounds of an instrument like a bells have a reputation for attracting helpful, benevolent spirits and energies. You can hang also hang them up like wind chimes, add colorful beads to to represent a particular spirit. There are so many ways to incorporate a bell into your practice.
Invoking Spirits: Bells often used in spiritual work. They can be helpful for all kinds of spirits, including calling them. Like your spirit guides, your ansestors, saints, deities etc can be called with a bell to aid you in your work. In these situations, a bell serve three purposes: Their sound tells spirits when it is time to arrive and depart, marks the beginning and end of specific phases of a ritual, and ensures that you are getting helpful spirits, not bad ones.
In the case of ritual work a bell is used durning repeating a chant or a prayer or to request and call upon a spirit, followed by a few rings of a bell. Even if you are not following a specific, format, you can simply use your bell when it makes sense to you. You don't need a large bell for this -- a small one will do just fine.
Protection: Since: bells are so good at driving off evil, they can also keep it away if you use them preventatively. You can also use a bell while calling on angelic protection. For instance you can choose a Saint Michael for protection take you bell, and ring it while reciting a prayer to Saint Michael for protection.
Opening And Closing Of A Ritual: Rituals are usually structured in very specific ways. The atmosphere of the ritual is designed to be a kind of container for spiritual energy. The vibrations opens the way, It puts you in another state of consciousness for your spiritual work. Ringing bells is a good way to mark the beginning of a ritual, as well as send energy on its way at the end. You can do this with any kind of bell. All you need to do is set aside a few seconds during your rituals to ring it and say a prayer call on your guides for protection. Then start your ritual whether it's calling a saint, deity or ansestors. So if you do not have a bell in your home, it is a great spiritual tool to investing in.

watching bridgerton and obviously there were a lot of things wrong with the way socializing has worked in the past, but honestly the idea of a "calling hour" is so appealing. office hours for friendship. you can show up unannounced at my home between 1 and 3pm. you must leave by 3pm. I may give you a pastry. lets bring that back
