'Justice League Dark' – The DCU multiverse on HBO Max
‘Justice League Dark’ – The DCU multiverse on HBO Max
While the title suggests an evil version of the superhero team made up of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and others, Justice League Dark (2017) is actually a comic book series featuring an alternative team of characters whose powers are less super than supernatural.
This animated feature version reimagines the origin of the team. When citizens start seeing demons in streets, Batman (voiced by…

Justice League Dark (2017)
When I popped Justice League Dark into my Blu-ray player, I was greeted by the MPAA's "R" rating. It gives the wrong impression. This enjoyable story showcases a number of lesser-known heroes from the DC Universe and isn’t going to raise controversy. It could’ve easily been trimmed down to a PG-13 rating with a few creative edits. One can't help but feel like it was pushed into "adult" territory solely as a marketing ploy.
A series of bizarre incidents around the world brings Batman (voiced by Jason O’Mara) to recruit magical heroes (or would-be heroes) together. Hopefully, the Dark Knight, along with occultist John Constantine (Matt Ryan), magician Zatanna (Camilla Luddington), ghostly Deadman (Nicholas Turturro), and demon-possessed Jason Blood/Etrigan (Ray Chase) can track down the sinister entity behind it all.
I should begin by mentioning that while DC Comics favorite Swamp Thing (voiced by Roger Cross) is in the film, it’s more of a cameo. The Blu-ray cover is misleading. The character’s inclusion is somewhat puzzling, but I could see him taking on a bigger role in the next chapter, or perhaps his own DC Animated Original film (let’s hope) so I'll let it slide for now.
Justice League Dark features the same level of animation as the other recent direct-to-home video films from Warners Bros. Animation/DC Entertainment. It’s not movie quality, but it's good for a direct-to-video feature - though not as good as when this series began. That’s perfectly fine. What it does with its budget is quite impressive. There’s a big battle between the team of heroes and a familiar villain (I won’t say who) that showcases what you can do with both magical characters and a medium that is free from the limitations of stunt people and living actors. Another pro is the cast. While some characters are more developed than others, the film keeps up the excitement and tension by featuring a crew of B-listers. Since we’re not guaranteed a Justice League Dark 2 and few would call Deadman or Jason Blood a favorite, you’re never quite sure where the action scenes are headed. Sure, Batman is safe, but the other ones? They could die!
Less effective is the film’s climax and central mystery. It’s not bad, it’s just that 75 minutes isn't long enough to bury the obvious suspect beneath red herrings and other distractions. We could’ve also used more explanations/clarifications for some of the game-changing actions that take place during the last act. As has been the trend for several of these past films, Justice League Dark would've greatly benefitted from even just a few minutes more.
It’s pretty clear Batman has been included on this team solely to sell the film to the people who are not already familiar with the likes of Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and Constantine. It certainly isn’t because the story or other characters aren’t interesting enough on their own. While some behind-the-scenes aspects of Justice League Dark are puzzling and the story could be expanded further, I’d be enthusiastic to see a sequel. This one is worth checking out if you’re a fan of DC's ongoing series of animated films. (On Blu-ray, June 28, 2017)

Olivia
Harry wrote Olivia for One Direction's Made on the AM which was written and recorded between March - September 2015. Several months after 1989 was completed. Taylor has said she played 1989 for Harry and it's highly likely he was also aware of the Vault Tracks.
From Rolling Stone:
Bunetta and Ryan cite “Olivia” as a defining track, one that captures just how far One Direction had come as songwriters: They’d written it in 45 minutes, after wasting a whole day trying to write something far worse. “When you start as a songwriter, you write a bunch of shitty songs, you get better and you keep getting better,” Ryan says. “But then you can get finicky, and you’re like, ‘Maybe I have to get smart with this lyric.’ By Made in the A.M. … they were coming into their own in the sense of picking up a guitar, messing around, and feeling something, rather than being like, ‘How do I put this puzzle together?’”
Harry also said Olivia 'fell out' when they were trying to write something else to GMA and avoided answering what he was trying to write which may have been Perfect as it took a long time.
Who is Olivia?
Harry famously answered this "Is Olivia even a person? Is Olivia an emotion? Is she a place? We don't know" Oliva sounds like 'I love ya'
Harry later referenced Olivia in the leaked Ophelia (I feel ya). Harry wrote Ophelia, in Tokyo when she was there for the last Reputation show in November 2018, he also wrote Little Freak at the same time. Ophelia and Olivia are Taylor Swift.
Taylor also has a cat Olivia Bensen, adopted June 2014, Harry can be heard laughing in her adoption video.
Lyrics
[Spoken Intro]
[Verse 1: Niall]
Remember the day we were giving up
When you told me I didn't give you enough
And all of your friends were saying I'd be leaving ya?
She's lyin' in bed with my t-shirt on
Just thinking how I went about it wrong
This isn't the stain of a red wine, I'm bleeding love
Harry has referenced Taylor wearing his shirts in a number of songs. She's also wore a few of his shirts.
The Red wine is also a reference to 1989, so we know who he is singing to:
Clean - "You're still all over me like a wine-stained dress I can't wear anymore"
Maroon "The burgundy on my T-shirt when you splashed your wine into me" and
[Pre-Chorus: Niall]
Please, believe me, don't you see the things you mean to me?
Oh, I love you, I love you, I love, I love, I love Olivia
I think this is a reference to "Say don't go" a 1989 Vault Track. As Harry and Taylor were dating again through the production, and she has said she played it for him it is likely he knew the lyrics "Make me love you (Make me love you)? / I said, "I love you" (I said, "I love you")/ You say nothing back"
[Chorus: Harry]
I live for you, I long for you, Olivia (Ayy, ayy)
I've been idolizing the light in your eyes, Olivia (Ayy, ayy)
I live for you, I long for you, Olivia
Don't let me go, don't let me go
This is almost a direct response to Say don't go's: "Say, "Don't go" / I would stay forever if you say, "Don't go""
[Verse 2: Liam]
Say what you're feelin' and say it now
'Cause I got the feelin' you're walkin' out
And time is irrelevant when I've not been seeing ya
The consequences of falling out
That's something I'm having nightmares about
And these are the reasons I'm cryin' out to be with ya
Say don't go was asking him to ask her to not leave, In Olivia he did.
[Bridge: Harry]
When you go and I'm alone
You live in my imagination
The summertime, butterflies
All belong to your creation
I love you, it's all I do, I love you
Harry continued to refer to Taylor as sunshine, butterfly's and all things good:
Golden: "golden as I open my eyes / Hold it, focus, hoping, take me back to the light / I know you were way too bright for me / I'm hopeless, broken, so you wait for me in the sky”
Sunflower Vol 6: "Sunflower / My eyes, want you more than a melody"
Sweet Creature: "Wherever I go, you bring me home / Sweet creature, sweet creature / When I run out of road, you bring me home"
Fine line: “You sunshine, you temptress / My hand's at risk, I fold"
Daylight "If I was a bluebird, I would fly to you / You'd be the spoon / Dip you in honey so I could be sticking to you / Daylight, you got me cursing the daylight (ooh)"
Grapejuice: "Give me something old and Red."
Little Freak "I disrespected you / Jumped in feet first, and I landed too hard / A broken ankle, karma rules"
Happily "I don't care what people say when we're together / You know I wanna be the one to hold you when you sleep / I just want it to be you and I forever"

Did you see the last interviews? De Oliva makes me so angry, all the time she talks about Alicent and Rhaenyra, while the writer-producers keep talking about them
It's just so tedious, even at Aegon's fucking coronation, she's like “ah Alicent is thinking of Rhaenyra” I mean, sorry? If you want to fuck Emma, just say so and be done with it
There are two things to understand about what she is doing here and why she's doing it.
1.) Make no mistake, this is the publicity version of trying to go over the showrunners head right now to get her idea into the media in order for them to interpret it as she does in order to force peer pressure on the showrunners to do it her and D'arcy's way.
As we've seen in the leaks about Spotchnik's 'Leaving" we've found out that it was Spotchnik's wife's idea that this story should be framed as a Lesbian Romance of spurned love. And that was what Spotchnik went with - against GRRM and Condal's scripts and story.
Olivia Cooke and Emma D'arcy were cast and developed the characters with Spotchnik and his wive's premise that Alicent and Rhaenyra are in love ... madly so. The entire Season 1 was built around this to them, the actresses. Episodes 6-10 were filmed in a bubble, with only Spotchnik and Hess overseeing them. Ryan Condal is the head writer and story editor of the series - he does not oversee the production nor direction. So, Spotchnik and - apparently - his wife oversaw the framing of Condal and GRRM's scripts and interpreted them the way they saw fit, not what was intended or instructed.
Spotchnik believed that HBO owed him for the success of "Game of Thrones" and he left that show hating GRRM, "A Song of Ice and Fire", and most importantly the fanbase. When HBO convinced him to come back to oversee the production and direction of Season 1 of 'House of the Dragon", he decided that this was gonna be his story, not GRRM's. And the Alicent and Rhaenyra spurned love story was gonna be part of it ... backed up by activist actresses and a progressive corporate structure.
However, when Discovery bought Warner Media - and by extension HBO - the corporate structure that supported Spotchnik's hijacking of HOTD disappeared overnight. Thus, when he was gearing up for Season 2, he was shocked to find that the new people weren't gonna put up with his bullshit. Right now they're saying that it's about his wife not being made executive producer ... but I've heard that the new people at HBO read the premise for Season 2 and said that they weren't gonna pay money to produce "Garbage" and told him to start over. And that he threw a massive and violent tantrum and quit - though some people said that he was fired.
This is all a long way of saying that GRRM and Condal just spent three solid months rebreaking, rewriting, and fixing, the mess that Spotchnik and probably Hess made of Season 2 - which is why they're starting late and playing catch up with production.
And probably the first thing that got axed in this rewrite and briefing with Alan Taylor was that they're gonna drop through a hole into the abyss is this stupid fucking idea that Alicent and Rhaenyra were ever in love.
GRRM has always maintained that Alicent and Rhaenyra hated each other's guts and that "Something else" (Criston Cole) was the reason for their animosity against one another. He did not in 2018 nor now like the Lesbian aspect of people's headcanon of their relationship - he has said multiple time over 20 years that if a character is gay that he'll outright say they're gay.
So, with all that context, you need to understand that Olivia Cooke has built this entire gay romance into the character - refusing to read the source material that contradicts her process. Now, GRRM has taken control of the show and it's direction and has told her and D'arcy point-blank that "You're not gay, you've never been gay, and you hate one another with a passion."
What you're seeing is that Cooke can't and won't let her "Alicent is a Lesbian" go, cause now she'd have to look into Alicent as a woman and find something else that motivates her. But since Cooke is a white, upper-class, Londoner with Luxury Politics, she thinks that religious, traditional, conservative, women are beneath her (just spend five minutes on her social media) and she couldn't dare try to understand women like Alicent, cause in her upper-class white girl mind she'd have to think like 'a poor''.
So, in the end, she's trying to convince the media and the normie fanbase to embrace the narrative that "Alicent is a repressed lesbian' in order to force Condal and the writers room to validate her character choices, so that she isn't forced to play pretended a type of person that she is - and make no mistake - absolutely hates and is prejudice against.
In parlance to a rich white female Londoner, it would be like asking a devout Muslim to play a militant and promiscuous homosexual.
2.) Cooke is jockying for awards.
I pretty sure she was promised awards if she takes a job for this "Dumb Nerd Shit" ... and now that Spotchnik is gone and the culture around the show has changed drastically, she's trying to convince voters in the academies that this is a LBGT story and that she is a LBGT character, in order to court the sycophants of Hollywood - this is a Hollywood show, despite British crew and actors - to consider her for award season.
This might offend people, but I hate to break it to you that most actresses are that shallow and opportunistic.
@ me all you want, you ain't got enough smoke in the world, fangirls.
