will u write race analyses this year queen?
Yes!
I have been working out a new format that I think will be more manageable for me.
Summer might be tricky because I am gonna be out of service for multiple days at a time, but aside from that yes.
I think I have decided to stay far more Ferrari focused, so we'll be looking in depth at Charles' and Lewis' races each weekend and also where the SF-25 is at.
And then if there is something else important for other drivers probably post separately about that if it bears discussion (ie Max vs Lando on track battles etc)
Staying focused on the team and taking glances at other drivers/teams when relevant.
Bare minimum we must talk about Charles' race. Also super super interested to see where the car lands this year, this car is critical to Ferrari's immediate future.
But yes I am very excited to do more technical talk this season with you all!

What would you like to see more of [in speculative fiction] in the next 10 years?
Amal El-Mohtar: That’s such a good question, the next 10 years. You know, I’m aware that when I find myself wanting to answer this, I don’t want it to come from a place of nostalgia. And I’m aware of the fact that I’m at an age where some of the things that are delighting me, the most are things that revisit stuff from my childhood in, like, weird, interesting new ways. And I know that I’m at the age where I’m being marketed to by that specifically. So seeing Interview With the Vampire delights me. Seeing X-Men ’97 delights me. But I don’t want to be pandered to in that specific way in the next 10 years. I don’t know if this is too froofy an answer but I really want to be dazzled and surprised, you know? To me, wanting to see more queerness means not just box ticking categories of, like, how many chocolate box kinds of queer can we see in a book representation-wise. I’m really interested to see books that queer shit, like queer as a verb. Maybe that’s what I’d say, I want to see queer as a verb more in books. I wanna see genre boundaries blurred at the same time that I wanna see really unapologetic deep dives into genre furniture to be like, give me the most melodramatic shit. Give me, like, the most maximalist iteration of the genre that you want and stuff. I think I just wanna see a lot more unabashed… something that is activating and lovely. It also feels very selfish and inchoate to say I just wanna be dazzled. I wanna be charmed. I think she also wanna see just, like, more I would love to see more SF digestion of other modes of writing. How can I put this? I just I wish I want people to read outside of genre so that they can bring into genre things that are exciting in other places. I wanna see cross-pollination. I just wanna see people being dazzled and excited by other stuff and then, like, bringing it in and exchanging. That’s where I thrive, I find. That’s why people get mad at my column a lot because it’s like, ‘where’s the science fiction and where is the fantasy?’ And I’m like, it’s here, it just looks different. It just looks different than what you have read.

How do u like ur coffee I’m just genuinely curious (I can’t drink it anymore due to missing a digestive organ but I miss how it tastes so much. I feel like Bruce would have that happen to him one day and just. Absolutely mourn it bc it’s one thing he consistently drinks even when he’s focused on work)
Straight up coffee? Cream and sugar, nothing excessive. I swapped to monkfruit sweetener a while back so I do that + a tablespoon of creamer most days. When I get espresso, it's usually a flat white. Quad shot, SF vanilla syrup. Or a cortado. Eventually if I get desperate I just pound the straight espresso shots, but usually at that point an espresso martini is an option, thankfully.
One time I did actually put a hole in my stomach lining and couldn't have coffee for like two months. That was when I learned I was a little addicted to caffeine. So most days, I try to stay under the healthy limit for caffeine, excluding preworkout.

There's something about how we are collectively digesting the supposedly Armand messing with Louis and Daniel's memories reveal/confirmation that rubs me the wrong way. It's not that I'm not convinced that he was responsible for (at least) part of the tinkering (although I have the feeling that there was *someone else* who did it). It is that most of the discourse I see makes it sound as something kind of forced from Armand when imo the key to all of it it is precisely the fact that it is all a barter between Louis and Armand.
From Armand's traumatic past as a sex slave and his life with Marius to Armand letting Daniel live in exchange for Louis's companionship. Armand says to Daniel "Bartering with desire. Is that what makes you fascinating?" And that's exactly what his relationship with Louis is about cause this is the only way Armand understands love, as a transaction. And Louis happens to be an art dealer who's very good at running things.
Among all the relationships in the show, I think Loumand is probably the least wholesome (sorry Naomi but you were so wrong). And that's what makes it the most fascinating imo. Loumand is the most messed up relationship in the show not because of power imbalance like Armand Marius or Devil's Minion but because there is an agreement between them. I think that robbing Louis of his agency in the deal would be missing the point of both the novel and the show
Mhhhh. I know what you're getting at. I mean, you probably know I am of the opinion that Louis did invite Armand to secure Claudia's and his own safety (at first at least), and he certainly behaves as if this relationship protects him from the pressures of the rules (and coven).
So there is a certain level of... assumed control. But... There was this post a few days back, comparing Armand to a willingly leashed tiger, and I think that fits very well.
Because even though you know that I still think that there might be more to it all (especially wrt Daniel's memories if the 12 years DM truly happened), and though I do think that Louis might even have asked Armand for a reprieve... I do not think Louis would consent to an intrusion like this. Armand is still very much in control, and Assad put it very precisely I think, when he said that he just cannot relax with the truth... Armand is the only one who knows the truth, and who... has Louis under "maintenance". He "protects Louis from himself".
In fact I think this, and the missing pages, and a lot of other little things will come to a head now in Dubai. Probably will facilitate that "cataclysmic event" that I've been talking about...
I... do think there was a lot more to the relationship before San Francisco than there is after SF. Because Armand literally controls Louis after. He says that the name "Lestat" had not been uttered in their relationship for 23 years, but it's still a trigger for them both, leading to catastrophic results in a single session. Oh, the other "tri-annual" events and kills were bad enough, but this... this was new. And Armand went and made sure it wouldn't happen again.
You are right that Loumand is among the least healthy relationships... I would argue even canonically so, though of course the show has dialed it up to 99. (And god, I wished Naomi/her guest had never said that, the drama this statement caused, seriously). But I... I mean, it is more interesting in Paris and up to San Francisco, definitely. Or, at least in Paris. Because I think... I think whatever happens after the trial will already shift their relationship. Because why would Louis, this Louis stay with Armand? Why does he? What exactly makes him stay with Armand. (I think that will be a really interesting aspect in the show!)
For ME((!!!!))... that is why Loumand is not fascinating (Though I get it if it is for you^^💕). Because Louis is not well... and Armand... Armand tags along, they foreshadowed that on the walk along the Seine - and then Louis tags along, later. Or exists.
Tumblr media
(*by a companion.)
Armand tries to salvage what he can while groveling for what he did in Paris. And that is precisely where their "agreement" stops, for me. Because if your mind is tinkered with... you cannot consent.
It's like being under drugs - you cannot consent.
And Armand has never been much about consent... unfortunately.
So yeah, that's ... my two cents on this^^.
It definitely is one of the most difficult relationships at this point.
We'll see in the next episodes where Louis' "agreement" with Armand stops, I think. Because if I'm right and Louis did not see this as part of the "agreement"? Then this will hit the fan in Dubai - and personally I expect it to (and I think, going by Jacob's statement - it will).

I admire all the Salad Fingers theories and speculation on the web, but to me, SF will forever be a loreless and random show. There are recurring themes and characters, but I don't really think anything means anything in that series. It's just stuff for the sake of stuff, detached from any kind of message or overaching story. I think part of the reason I think of it that way is because it just makes it easier to digest; lore is exhausting and it's nice to take in a series without worrying about the implications in the story, because I don't really think there is one. It's just a series where a creature does stuff with very few connections between anything.

Things that happened yesterday:
☆ I took the cake bites from the Valentine's date to my partner's house to share and...she put them in her fridge. [Bahahaaha NO cake bites for me, we didn't do back to her house!]
☆ I was asked if I wanted to stop at a certain place to get a scotcheroo. I said No!
☆ I did have a lovely Quiche Lorraine at the bakery we went to for coffee. And a sf coffee. I successfully ignored all the sweets, so my cravings were lower.
All wins 🏆🙌👏

Hi, Jenn! Editors have been saying my Adult books seem “young.” I’m not really sure what that means. It’s just not literary enough? What makes something seem young? (Sorry, I know you’re not an Adult agent!!)
If I had to hazard a context-free guess (which might be completely wrong, I haven't read your book!) -- I'd say one or more of these might be the issue:
-- Maybe your characters read young. Like maybe you say they are 30 (or whatever), but they seem to have the concerns / mindset / voice of teenagers.
-- Especially if you are writing SF/F or something of that nature, maybe your world-building is not complex or "deep" enough seeming? Like, for example, sometimes you have a YA dystopian called ESCAPING THE DOME, and it's like "Clarizee lives in this world that is under a dome, the world outside the dome is uninhabitable, everyone in the dome is assigned a job at birth and their life partner at age 15" -- and that's basically all we need know about the world, then it's a plot about how Clarizee doesn't WANT to be a zigko farmer or to marry Baxx next week! So she's gonna escape the dome and figure it out, with the help of her mutant dog and an unlikely ally from the Forbidden Zone! -- but if it was an adult book, we'd know when and WHY the dome was put into place, what the political and societal ramifications of the dome are, how the dome even works, what medicinal properties zigko has, where the corrupt president of Dome City gets his pickled herrings, who ELSE wants to escape the dome, more about the Forbidden Zone and its people, or whatever, and while the Clarizee escaping plot might still exist, the fabric of the whole world would be more complex and Clarizee's teen angst would not be center or the driving force of the story, but rather one thread among many.
-- Maybe, as you suggest, your prose is basic or "just not literary enough" -- but a nicer way to say that is, maybe your prose is tonally more commercial than literary. That isn't to say that books for young people can't be literary, beautifully written and intricate (they often are!), or that books for adults can't be written in a commercial, straightforward and easy-to-digest way (they often are!) -- but rather, perhaps your book seems like it SHOULD be literary, but the writing feels more commercial, or vice-versa. Like Dan "DA VINCI CODE" Brown writes in a highly commercial (simple, punchy, "gettable") way for highly commercial stories -- he's not trying to win a literary award, he's trying to sell a shit-ton of books at the airport. That's not an insult! His writing is perfect for the kind of book he is writing, and his massive success is a testament to that fact. George "LINCOLN IN THE BARDO" Saunders writes highly innovative and finely crafted fiction and wins loads of literary awards -- he isn't trying to write mass market thrillers for the airport crowd. So a George Saunders type book with DB type writing OR a Dan Brown type thriller with GS type writing might be a tonal mismatch -- they wouldn't speak to the audience for which the books are aimed.

[SF RaphDon - picked SF because of our icons BUT like any verse you want really xDD]
"It wasn't so much a melt down Raph," Don claims, coming down from his small fit "It was more of a... slight aneurism," He huffs, feeling the need to defend himself, "It's not my fault that they can't just put all of our show in one place, oh no, we have to jump through every single hoop possible, AND THEN ON TOP OF THAT-"
Oops, someone got mad again when trying to defend themselves for getting mad over streaming services.
| muse interaction
Battle Ravage, was Don and Raph's show. They both loved it when they started to catch it airing early Saturday mornings. It was popular enough to have more than one TV series. Nearly having a show ever decade it felt like. The one they grew up with and at least so far two reboots to follow. A show from the 80's a hand full of movies even video games and comics. There was a lot to digest from the franchise. Not always the same sometimes they tried something new like the live action show that didn't seem to go over all to well. Raphael could simply say that he liked the franchise and it was why he tended to check out most of it. if something from it for one reason or another didn't quite hit his tastes he could pass over it there was always the chance of something more coming along the way. BUT he was pretty biased for the takes he did like best but with how old most of it was there wasn't really a way to just watch the show like he used to.
Too old so it wasn't really on TV anymore, Donnie pointed out it was on some streaming services though. And that's kind of what landed Raph to be standing behind Donnie now at his makeshift 'lab' which was really just a table not far from the nook he used for his bed. When he bothered to sleep in said bed that is. Arm resting over the back of the chair Donatello was sitting in, leaning forward to look over Don's laptop screen as they were looking around online where it was listing where the shows were provided through and such and it was annoying.
Tumblr media
"why the fuck is 'his show all over the fuckin' place?" Raphael suddenly exclaims not caring for the tone in his voice or how loudly he was getting beside his brothers ear. Though Don may be far to used to Raph's lack of control when it came to his volume. Seeing all the time the pair spent together in general. The sudden pull back into this franchise when the more recent show came about making them want to revisit the older one well mostly the one they grew up watching and maybe finally check out the one before that. They both seen some of it before and it was meant to be online somehow but
"Why ain't the 87 show on 'here wit' the rest of it?" Raph suddenly pointed out as they were looking over one site together "An' this one only got the first season of the third show?" Raph had to admit he didn't understand a lot of things and for sure didn't know a lot of stuff but the way the internet seemed to scatter around the shows? It didn't make sense right?
One show had its seasons spilled across two sites alone? Another was fully available, but you would have to pay extra for the later seasons? And then there was one site you cause get all of another, but you had to buy each episode on it own? AND the last one he didn't understand why it was listing the show to have ten seasons? Seemed they group some up as speicals and counted as season? He wasn't following this crap he just wanted to watch Battle Ravage. Comfortably and with little to no action required of him. Sounded like a good way to relax after kicking ass or training till his muscles were screaming for a break. And nothing answered that need more seeing his favorite character.
So he was sort of losing out hips on a good way to go about that it be nice if there was just one place to watch it all. Sure, they sort of sloved said issue, but they would be switching between services and devices even. Though it seems his temperament wasn't the only one being affected in the moment. As Raphael looked over to his twin, eyeing their expression in the moment. Sure, he was annoyed by everything himself but he kind of got over it when listening to Donnie complaining along with him. Losing control over his own volume time to time was.
"Jeez Don didn' think ya have a full blown melt down ova' 'his." He teases a little, oh he knew Donnie could get angry and maybe worse than himself but it was rare and he had to admit entertaining to watch happen since he often kept a far more cool head.
Tumblr media
"It wasn't so much a melt down Raph,"
Raph moved to lean towards the side to better look at Don, not convinced in tje slightest by that remark as he arch up his brow and shifted his weight so that Don could see his expression at the moment.
"It was more of a... slight aneurism,"
"Yeah cause 'hats some how betta?" Raph retorts towards if very well known dramtic brother.
"It's not my fault that they can't just put all of our show in one place, oh no, we have to jump through every single hoop possible, AND THEN ON TOP OF THAT-"
Raphs grin only grew as Donnie start to full on yell then and there. Oh yeah clearly he wasn't mad or having a melt down over this as he went on into a another ranting fit of pure rage. Raphael doing all he could to not full on laugh over the reaction. It was only due to get worse once they goind out there was a way to have it how they wanted, all viewable on one source. But for now Raph just slam a free hand on to the surface of Don's work station. Joining in with Don's raving and ranting over their problem. Unaware that thier yelling had drawn attention to the corner of the lair they were tucked away in. But hey if Don was allowed to get angry here and there than Raph was allowed to be a bit of nerd here and there himself. Only stopping when he could just feel someone's eyes on them as he turned to look back.
"You guys aren't fighting are you?" Mikey asked standing beside Leo, Raphael tilted his head a bit then looked down to Donnie.
"Are we fightin?" Unsure in the moment once seeing the look on Don's face he took it as his answer "nah, jus' upset cause we tryin' to figure out how to watch all of Battle Ravage shows and shit." The share unimpressed looks Mikey and Leo pulled had Raphs snout scrunched up and brow furring down.
"Wha' 'hat for? It's a good series!" Raph yells once again now this time actually directed towards someone

What's the vibe? #77
Tumblr media
Pentagram? Are you ok?
Pentagram recently did a rebrand of an American government website using AI all the way almost. They input their initial ideas into Midjourney to create symbols. I'm really not sure whether this was a great idea? To be one of the worlds biggest design agencies and openly saying that Midjourney got you from basically Step 2-> Step 10 without human input is quite bizarre.
"In 2024, the Federal Government of the United States partnered with Paula Scher’s team at Pentagram to design a website called performance.gov.
Federal law requires the White House and major agencies—such as Health and Human Services (HHS), the Department of Defense, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and others—to set strategic goals to benefit the public."
instagram
My favourite part of this is essentially: "The results from the first direction were interesting but the shapes had no meaning."
youtube
I was listening to this podcast this weekend called Middlebrow - mentioned last week - but in it, the writer and theorist Ruby Thelot said something about how tech people don't know or want to appreciate art. "Aside from video games, my friends in tech and in SF are not interested in being an audience to a culture that is not about them."
Why accept machines and their slightly soulless outputs when they're doing harm to us and wider culture?
Pyjama Tourism
Tumblr media
This Vogue article is related to the long list of things relating to the rise of "new sleep culture", this sort of celebration of the bed rot or bed day for the healthy amongst us. I remember watching a video of a girl going to a shop in Rome getting the pyjamas at a store Harry Styles shops at. It's called Schostal.
Now the New York Times Style is talking about pyjamas as style and souvenirs. Tilting more on the American side but the trend could be more Western as the popularity of Tekla shows.
It's because of the cut: "Typically made locally with cotton fabrics and in classic cuts associated with men’s wear, the pajamas have for some people become a new souvenir of choice — and a way to signal their discerning taste."
Americans still revere European style: “There is a European-ness attached to these pajamas because they come from heritage stores,” said Laila Gohar, an artist who owns styles from labels in Italy and Austria. “We are seeing women bring them from Europe to America.”
"Schostal Originals is currently shipping about 75 percent of its online orders to the United States, said Andrew Bloch Fiorelli, who owns the company with his mother. It recently introduced pajama shirts without piping and pockets that are meant to look less like sleep wear."
Examples from Leila Gohar's collection: "P. Le Moult in Vienna, which start at $247; from Casa Del Bianco in Milan, which start at $120 and are offered in prints like Liberty of London florals; and from Schostal Originals in Rome, which start at 195 euros, or about $204.
Other popular makers include Paris em Lisboa in Lisbon, where pajama sets start at 110 euros, or about $115; and Magniberg, a newer Swedish brand founded by a former Acne Studios designer, where styles start at 292 euros, or about $305."
Pilot Magazine
Not exactly new but I like the way this magazine has a flip book style and it also has really great contributors for Issue 5. Pilot Magazine is "a digest dedicated to all things creative, experimental, and authentic." I just like the video as a nice way to imply another way to consume information.
Hus of Frakta
Tumblr media
IKEA has opened its own luxury pop up to grow hype around its Oxford Street launch. Situated at the space where the IKEA will be is an interactive space.
Tumblr media
You can personalise your own FRAKTA bag and turn it into a one-of-a-kind piece, you can shop a curated edit of IKEA products and bags and I guess take a photo on a blue hallway? Very similar to the Jacquemus experiences if you can say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Rooted in the five democratic design principles of IKEA – function, form, quality, sustainability, and affordability – the FRAKTA is available for just 75p, making it an indispensable part of everyday life. Nearly half of UK households (45%) own one, with many (31%) keeping theirs for over five years, proving that it’s not just a bag – it’s a part of their journey."

(this is sort of a tangent so feel free to ignore me ENTIRELY but: who exactly is the audience for litRPG stuff? my first time hearing of it was at a sf/f writer's workshop, and when it was described to me i was like "wouldn't these people simply read webfiction" but then i was informed of The Sales Numbers Around LitRPG People I Had Never Heard Of and was like What The Hell, but i was clearly the only Extremely Online person in the room so figured i wouldn't get any further context from present company lol)
For some reason I thought I had answered this, and maybe I did somewhere and can't find it, so sorry if this is a restatement of something you've already read, but ...
There are a few fundamental fantasies being fulfilled by the modern litRPG.
First, there's the power fantasy, the idea that you can have control and be agenty and make decisions. I don't think there's anything wrong with power fantasy per se, and I expect that the desire for power fantasy will grow when people feel more and more powerless. litRPG does not offer anything much different from e.g. superhero stories, at least as far as power fantasy goes.
Second, there's the progression. This is part of the power fantasy, the getting stronger over time angle, powering up, getting better. litRPG promises that, it's in the nature of the RPG elements, and fundamental to the appeal. This is something that e.g. superhero stories usually don't have. (There is a whole genre, progression fantasy, that focuses on this, and litRPGs are usually a subset of that depending on who you ask.)
Third, the litRPG offers legibility. It is clear what the powers are, what they do, what choices are to be made. Everything is clearly laid out and easy to conceptualize, at least most of the time. And because this is the case, it's good as a platform for the imagination, especially for analytical readers. It's something for people to daydream about, argue over, etc. Legibility is super important, IMO, or at least the appearance of legibility, the illusion that the author has a Concrete Plan with Hard Numbers. Armchair psychoanalysis is that a desire for this relates to a lack of legibility (and by proxy "fairness") in real life.
Fourth, the litRPG naturally speaks the language of videogames, and a lot of the readers are super into videogames, so there's some element of "thing that I like" in there which I don't think can actually add to any analysis, but also some of the things that people like about video games are power fantasy, progression, and legibility, so ...
There's also a lot of overlap between webfic and litRPG. I don't know that I'd say it's the most popular form of webfic right now, but ... probably it is? The overall market is young men for both. [Edit: I should probably clarify that I don't know what the hell goes on over at Wattpad. AO3 is also webfic, but that's fanfic, and female dominated last I checked. I'm talking more RoyalRoad, SB/SV, QQ, etc. I am not a market expert, terms and conditions may apply.]
Here are some other reasons I've heard from people when I've asked:
it's hard to screw up, so you're guaranteed a quality baseline
the writing is often simple popcorn that's easy to digest
the writing is often bad in a way that makes it less predictable
there's often no romance or introspection
the numbers are going up, and I like that consistent dopamine drip feed
the characters are simple
the main character is just like me
I think some of these are just wild to think about, and others are not really about the genre, just the kinds of people who write within it and the stories that make up the bulk of what people are reading.
LitRPG where the protagonist's game system is very clearly from a game with a 20-minute day-night cycle, and whose gamification of hunger, thirst, and sleep just wreaks havoc on his personal and professional life.
Just kidding, litRPG protagonists don't have personal or professional lives.

Pics of the Day #11 | Game Time, baby!
Let the busy season commence. 🏃🏽‍♀️ I’m gonna go dark on these photo posts/journal entries in the coming weeks. Work is really picking up but I’ll come back to do a monthly gratitude recap.
Tumblr media
I can never limit the amount of tabs on my laptop and such is le work life. Working for a global brand means working beyond the 9-5 window and typical 5-day work week.🌀 No complaints at all considering how fortunate it is to work with passionate, talented folks who put a major emphasis on work/life balance + mental health. And being a part of awesome campaigns is something I could never dream of.
Still crazy to me that I worked with Steve Aoki and filmed at his house. Attended Worlds 2022 in SF and lived at the Chase Center that week. I was in the presence of Lil Nas and danced with Jackson Wang. Last year, met Madeon and hung out with Wavedash. Like wtheeckkk. The bingo card go crazy. Very very grateful and definitely ignites the fire to keep on keeping on. I think what makes this feel even crazier is just the entire gaming community. Being a part of it is already insane, but being on the other side and creating content is just like - wow, thank you God. Thank you for providing. I've always been a gamer but to have it as my job is still funny to say. I remember bringing my mom to campus and she looked around in amazement and said she was proud of me. I cried cause I didn't want to be a nurse. In fact, I worked really freakin hard to forge the path that I'm on now. No handouts or freebies. Gonna write a blog post about it - me thinks. God's hands were definitely there. 🙏🏻
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still, lots of fun things coming soon and can't wait to share and digest. I can feel myself become go go go again but let this blog serve as a reminder to equally fill up my own cup as it is to serve the things & people who are significant in my life.
Recharge, replenish, and go. See you in a bit, Tumblr. 🤝🏽
