Chapter Four
——————————————————————————————————
The gray carpet extended through the open concept living room, giving way to a wall of windows overlooking Tokyo. Reina ran her hand along the marble of the kitchen, admiring the stainless steel appliances. She hadn’t realized that Jujutsu High freely provided their employees with such lucrative benefits.
The flat screen television sat untouched in the corner, the plush couch taunting her to lay down. Her day consisted of unpacking her office and chastising Satoru Gojo, the latter she had determined would soon become a regular occurrence.
Exhaustion had seeped into her bones and threatened to burst from her. Reina was in desperate need of a shower and a long sleep. She would freely admit that though he continued to irritate her, Gojo had relieved a great deal of anxiety. She no longer worried about how she would be able to afford rent or groceries.
The keys had sat neatly on her office desk when she had returned from her earlier outburst. A note, in what she had assumed was Gojo’s handwriting, with the address and a “Welcome home! (* ^ ω ^)” - met with a sigh and a roll of her eyes.
Carrying the one remaining box through the apartment, Reina had noticed two rooms across the hall from one another. One was noticeably decorated with a masculine aesthetic in mind. The secondary area appeared more neutral therefore she placed her stuff on its desk.
Unpacking her things neatly, it took her little time to finish the job. Setting out her clothes post shower, she slowly made her way to the attached bathroom.
The hot water cascaded down her back and massaged out knots she hadn’t realized were there. Relishing in the warmth, she spent extra care on the rest of her body. She had neglected parts of her routine over the last few weeks from stress, not realizing to what extent until it took her a few passes with her razor to get the skin smooth.
Washing out the conditioner from her hair before using a rose scented body wash, she finally stepped out of the shower. Wrapping herself in a towel she proceeded to open the door into the hallway. Embarking on a short journey to the kitchen for a drink.
The idea of dancing naked in the living room in front of the windows sprinted through Reina’s mind before she shook it off. It would be her luck that someone in a building diagonal would have the perfect view into the apartment, effectively ruining all privileges the lonely lodging gave her.
The sound of the refrigerator opening forced Reina to stop in the shadow of the hallway, creeping softly to peer around the corner. She didn’t have her kaiken but the vase sitting on the end table nearest to her would have to do. Slowly slipping it off the table, she held it up in preparation and sprung forward with a cry.
A deep laugh rumbled from the dark kitchen, the light from the fridge illuminated white hair and reflected off familiar glasses.
“What an unexpected greeting, Iyashi. Should I return the favor? I did get quite dirty today.” He chuckled softly as he placed the juice carton back into the fridge.
“What are you doing here?” Reina asked sternly, still holding the vase in the air prepared to strike.
“This is my apartment.” He said, turning slowly towards her. Gojo’s eyes dropped quickly to the edge of the towel where it barely covered her thighs.
Reina, too angry to pay attention, barked “No, it’s my apartment. It was part of the agreement.”
“I am away on business a lot, Iyashi. I need someone to take care of the place while I’m not here. Seemed the perfect fit. You need a place to live. I need a roommate.” He picked up his belongings from the counter and began to walk towards Reina.
She quickly lifted the vase higher, implying she intended to hit him if he got any closer.
“You can put the vase down, you’re safe.” He said before attempting to go around her.
“Am I?” She muttered to herself, placing the vase back down on the end table in defeat.
Gojo pushed the door to his room open, placing his belongings on the desk before walking to his closet.
Without thought, Reina barged in after him shouting, “Hey, I’m not done talking to you, pretty boy!”
“I’m listening,” mused Gojo as he slid his jacket off and placed it in the bin.
Reina faltered momentarily before continuing, “I told you I’m not your maid. I’m not your slave.”
“I never asked you to be, though the thought of you in that outfit will surely keep me up at night.” He chuckled and pulled his shirt off, leaving his abs on display.
Her slight intake of breath kept her from replying immediately, she couldn’t deny that his back was mesmerizing - distracting at the very least.
“Well, good, I won’t be mistreated by a narcissist who thinks everyone will bend to his will.” She nodded her head with conviction.
“I wouldn’t expect any less.” Gojo straightened up and turned towards her, hands on his belt as he proceeded to loosen it. “Now, Iyashi, could you please put on something a little less distracting before I get carried away?”
A blush spread from the back of her neck, kissing her cheeks. She had forgotten that she was still in the towel, standing in his bedroom as he was undressing.
Reina squeaked a curt goodbye and fled the room.
She had expected to be angrier with him that he hadn’t been honest about her living arrangements but couldn't find it in herself. She was unsure if it was due to how exhausted she was or if she had grown to expect it from Gojo - even though she’d only known him for a few days.
The idea of living with someone had ignited a portion of Reina’s heart that she had forgotten existed - the desire for companionship. She grimaced at the thought of enjoying cohabitating with Gojo, of all people.
Reina dried her hair and finished her night time routine, falling back onto her bed with a soft plop. She could hear the light footsteps of Gojo from the kitchen back to the bedroom, it paused outside of her door.
“Goodnight, Iyashi! Sweet dreams!” He shouted through the door.
Reina found herself smiling before whispering “Goodnight, Gojo.”
——————————————————————————————————
Managing Gojo’s life proved rather difficult in the weeks to come. Pleadings from all over the country flooded her desk in search of his help. Reina had to weigh them in order of severity and urgency before delivering them.
He was consistently complimentary of how easily she had acclimated to the job. Though she continued to claim it was rather straightforward, he could have hired anyone.
The typically lighthearted man continued his studies with his students, in his free time exorcizing the curses within the area. Playing the part of confident and fun loving Gojo-sensei, never taking his hands from his pockets as he finishes off deadly curses within minutes of arrival.
There was a side of Gojo that bubbled to the surface in the moments where she delivered new cases, a quiet and contemplative one. He reviewed the information, treating each with a seriousness she had not yet grown accustomed to.
It had become abundantly apparent that the world relied on Gojo in a way that one could only assume was devastatingly heavy.
Yet he carried himself as if he expected no less.
In a few rare moments, Reina found herself feeling both sorry for and proud of Satoru Gojo.
——————————————————————————————————
Reina ripped open the envelope sitting on her desk to reveal its contents, the compelling recount of a curse that had plagued a family on the outskirts of Tokyo. A father, mother, five year old daughter, and sixteen-month old son. The letter revealed that the little girl had perished by the hands of the curse the day prior, they were begging for their lives.
She was unfortunately overly familiar with death. It was a natural consequence of this line of work and she read letters daily of families that were haunted by monsters.
This would not be the first or last family to perish at the hands of a curse.
Gojo was out of town on another case rendering him unavailable, there was a part of Reina that felt the familiar twinge of disappointment realizing she would have to draft a condolences letter.
She grabbed her bag from the desk, the images of a little girl splattered in blood flashed across her vision. She gripped the edge of the chair for balance, gritting her teeth.
Reaching for the two kaikens attached to her thighs - ensuring their location had not changed - Reina headed out the doors and in the opposite direction of the apartment, towards the train station.
Verifying the address upon arrival, she reached for the door and knocked lightly. A young woman answered, keeping the space between the frame and the wood small.
With barely an eye visible through the opening the woman whispered, “How can I help you?”
“My name is Reina Iyashi, I’m here to help you with your problem.” she answered softly with a small smile.
The woman’s eyes widened as she closed the door, the sounds of locks unclasping slipping through the cracks. She pulled the door open wide and Reina noted her pregnant belly.
“Oh, God. Thank you!” The woman cried and wrapped both arms around her. Reina had never been good at accepting public displays of affection. Her body stiffened in her arms and she lightly patted the woman’s side with her free arm.
“Where does it stay?” She asked quietly, her eyes darting around for any signs of the curse.
The young woman pointed to the top of the hill, the building sitting in its wake appeared overrun and unkempt. “When we moved here they said a woman drowned her two kids in that building and then slit her wrists in the tub. We were warned that a lot of strange things happened in the neighborhood but we thought…” She sniffled. “Well, we thought it was just talk…we never…”
Reina placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, keeping an appropriate distance between them in hopes she wouldn’t hug her again, “You didn’t know. Take solace in the fact that she is safe and not in pain. You did everything you could.”
Without waiting for a response, Reina turned and headed up the hill.

Revamped Sigurd reference sheet(Hellsing AU Lore bits included) Mature content ahead btw
Name(s) of character and explanations:
1: Sigurd Fenryka Magnusson (primary full name given by his father Petr Odayev Aleksander, nicknamed Magnus, and his uncle Wayland Gunther)
2: Constantine Valdorius Pendraco (Secondary full name given by his mother Irene Adriana Pendraco and grandfather Anarawd Pendraco)
The reason for his two full names is that it's a Welsh cultural (at least for my au) norm for families/clans to name their child with two full names to confirm their union in a marriage once it bears a child, thus unifying the two families together.

Scars/body details: Incredibly chiseled and well muscled due to genetic modification, scars all over from scratches, deep cuts, stabs, gunshot wounds, notable scars on his face over his right eye and two parallel cut scars diagonally rising from his jaw to his nose, and a large bite wound at his side. He is also covered in Norse-style tattoo at the front of his body to help keep his powers in check and as a retelling of his life story since the 5 years of war beginning in 1994 after what he thought to be a temporary vacation when he met his first love Seras Victoria and was with her for a month while she was in the orphanage. Then he continued the rest of his trip with his older brothers to a huge medieval-themed festival in Kosovo and all the way to his oaths to avenge his oldest brother Joshua. Only for them to be dragged into the grim plans of millennium's schemes for their war against Alucard, England, and then the world. Years of conflict and loss painted his body with not just scars but with tattoos as well. Each rune recounted atoning for old shames and liberating lost lands from vampire hordes spurned on by rebellions in the Balkans. These things are how he bares his soul to those who truly begin to know him. He also has a wedding ring on his finger, though he won't talk much about it to anyone.
Personality: Strangely positive, yet still marked by a deep determination fueled by his grim past. He's also remarkably calm under most pressure he faces. He also feels very strongly about injustices against people and will vocally stand up for more vulnerable, oppressed people since he is deeply anti-authoritarian. He's also very gentle with most people since he still has a hard time gauging his own strength in some moments. He's also a massive adrenaline junkie too, often doing things like parkour in Urban environments if bored enough or maybe something like hunting dangerous games with minimal equipment in rural areas. He's overall a very casual, fun person to be around like Pip would be in Hellsing. Though, with people who would be his sexual/romantic partners, he is much more sensual in his mannerisms. For a morally grey-ish character, he's turned out better than most of the other characters in the Hellsing universe as a whole.
Powers/abilities: He's not only stupidly strong since he's a super soldier but he also has some psychic abilities. One is that he can instill panic/general emotional distress into people around him. It's almost like a full-power sonar blasted in a general area or directly aimed at a spot and you're underwater when it happens as a diver. It's not just loud, it's disorientating, literally to the point you get sick or possibly even die underwater from drowning. Sigurd's powers of course aren't exactly like that, but it's just a heavy, smothering presence in the air that makes you feel like walls are closing in around you. He's caused people to have heart attacks before at its worst. So not only can he bench press a whole-ass black bear and leg press one too, but he would also scare you half to death by getting a little frustrated at you. So he's had to really tone himself back from his angrier past. Another ability he has is being able to communicate to most animals due to his curse.
Professions: To put it bluntly this guy would put the famous doctor, surgeon, therapist, plumber, professor, mechanic, pizza delivery guy, etc Johnny Sins look like a chump. Sigurd's been a commander of entire armies before and more than that too. But he's also had a very humble background in more working-class jobs like being a butcher, factory worker, and construction worker, even tried working in fast food but quit after a week when calling a rude customer a "rambunctious hoe" and slapping his boss across the face for being a dick about it. He's also been a mercenary before for a short period of time during the beginning of the war he was in. He was also a sex worker of sorts after his 19th birthday. So yeah he's had a wild time. Finally, he's found a new job with Hellsing after a war in Italy when Alucard fought him to a near stalemate until Sigurd ran out of steam and surrendered after sending his soldiers away. And instead of being executed, he was spared to recruit him and see what he could do.
(more might be added soon since I posted this at 2:45 am or whenever, kinda going stir crazy)

Q3) What are the implications of using different washer thicknesses in an assembly?
Ans) Utilizing distinct washer thicknesses within an assembly can yield noteworthy consequences for the assembly's overall performance and structural integrity. The selection of washer thickness can influence load distribution, clamping force, alignment precision, and the general stability of the connection. Below are essential implications to take into account:
1. Load Distribution:
   - Washers facilitate even load distribution across the joined surfaces. Differing washer thicknesses might lead to uneven load distribution, fostering stress concentrations and the premature failure of components.
2. Clamping Force:
   - Washer thickness directly impacts the clamping force applied to the joint. Thicker washers augment clamping force, while thinner ones diminish it. Disparate clamping forces can result in deficient fastening or excessive deformation of components.
3. Alignment and Leveling:
   - Washers often serve as shims to rectify misalignment or leveling disparities. Varying washer thicknesses could unintentionally worsen misalignment or hinder the leveling process.
4. Vibration and Loosening:
   - In scenarios exposed to vibrations or dynamic loads, inconsistent washer thicknesses may induce varying movement between components. This can contribute to bolt loosening, imperiling the connection's integrity.
5. Torque Requirements:
   - Different washer thicknesses can influence the torque needed to achieve a specific clamping force. Inaccurate torque application can result in uneven stress distribution or suboptimal fastening.

Different types of Corten Steel shapes – Beams and sections
Tumblr media
The most common type of beam used in construction is corten steel. They are also known as girder beams or girder trusses. Medium-strength corten steel beams have a low coefficient of elasticity. Consequently, they deform easily and don’t flex well under load. The bending properties of corten steel beams are also poor. Due to their high strength, low modulus, and low elasticity characteristics, their moment resisting capacity and bending strength is low. Beams made of corten steel are also known as multi-girder beams or girder trusses. In this case, “1:1” means one girder or beam per truss member. An attached bridge constructed with trusses is known as a “1:1” connection. A truss’ central column is called its “core”. When two beams are used in a system, each beam must be able to separate from the other without collapsing or separating further. Due to internal primary stresses and/or external secondary stresses, this condition cannot be met, resulting in damage
Girder Beams
Girder beams are used to build structures for homes. Grider beams are structural systems used in bridges and other structures. Girder beams are sturdy support beams that are located on the foundation of a house. Be careful when using it, as damage to the beams will result in structural problems. You may have more than one girder in your home at any given time, so make sure you use them safely and securely. It is important to be able to handle the beams’ weight safely when using them. In the right direction and at the right angle. A girder beam is a sturdy support beam used to connect and support your home’s foundation, beams, floors, and walls. Girder beams: How do I install them? In order to install a girder beam, you must determine where it will be placed. By measuring from the floor to the ceiling, you can determine the height. A pipe-jack system with a submersible pump is necessary if you need to extend the beam more than 1/2″ (1.3 cm) from its original location. Your pipe-jacks should be parallel to one another and parallel to your home’s floor, but should not touch it at all.
In the construction of bridges and high-rise buildings, girder beams are used as structural members. Steel, aluminum, or concrete can be used to make them. When a girder is subjected to an action, it can either be ‘in-plane’ or ‘out-of-plane’. The latter is usually applied when the structure has hinges (also called slides) that allow the structure to move in one plane of space while the geometry allows it to move in another. An in-plane beam moves in one plane, while an out-of-plane beam moves in two planes. Therefore, girder beams are most commonly configured in-plane. In contrast, out-of-plane girder beams are usually required when extending a bridge deck or building wall.
Girder Trusses
In the construction industry, girder trusses are used. Skyscrapers and bridges have them on their roofs. A truss can also be used to connect two towers. Basically, a truss is a series of frameworks or pylons attached to a single girder. Girders are cross-shaped beams that bear the weight of a structure. In its simplest form, two beams are fastened together along their lengths and then linked together at their ends by trusses or other means so that the total length of the girder is equal to the sum of its lengths along their lengths.
An I-beam, for example, is composed of parallel beams A and B with ends C and D. A truss beam E spans between them at an angle to the center lines A and B. This design is called a “T” or a “T-beam” since the truss spans are called “T” points. A T-beam may also be constructed such that only one end spans (in which case the other end is called the “T-point”). A “L” or “L-beam” is what this is called. Girders can be replaced with T-beams.
Girder Trusses have a long, straight design. A top chord and a bottom chord are separated by diagonal webs and vertical webs. The top chords are always in compression, and the bottom chords are always in tension. The diagonal webs in the truss shown here are compressed while the vertical webs are tensed.
Buildings with timber girder trusses and steel joinery look great. Usually, girder trusses are used to support other structural elements in a frame, such as traditional trusses, rafters, or purlins. Because of this, girded trusses are extremely rigid and strong.

(   *  💀  /  jessie mei li, questioning, she/they )  —  is that emmeline vance i just saw rushing down the corridor? i hear they’re a twenty year old hufflepuff, returning for their sixth school year, but their friends would tell you that they are industrious & compassionate as well as blunt & graceless. if you want to know more about them, i guess i could tell you that they’re muggleborn, and from what i hear, they’re currently allying with the order. when our divination professor looks into their crystal ball, they see: falling asleep studying over open books, split open pomegranates, working under flickering candlelight, casual intimacy between friends, a kitchen full of laughter.

The proper owner of the aspen wand is often an accomplished duellist, or destined to be so, for the aspen wand is one of those particularly suited to martial magic. An infamous and secretive eighteenth-century duelling club, which called itself The Silver Spears, was reputed to admit only those who owned aspen wands. In my experience, aspen wand owners are generally strong-minded and determined, more likely than most to be attracted by quests and new orders; this is a wand for revolutionaries.

emmeline had always known they were different. at first, it was because of her skin, the way she looked and spoke and could never find anyone to play with on the playground, her chinese middle name and her lao lao being the one to pick her up from school every morning. she would cry to her mother at night, cling to her arms like they were the port keeping her safe from the storm, and listen to her father sing, voice warm and tender as she drifted to sleep, but she never got the answers for why she was treated differently — never got answers for why she was the only non-white child in her school, never got answers for why they hated her so much, hated her existence. but she weathered through primary school, finding her footing in secondary school with her only friend, aisha, who never cared that she was different, that sometimes she could do things that nobody else seemed able to do, that she’d been encouraged to always tell the truth, nothing but the truth, that sometimes she’d say things that hurt, things that stung even though she never meant for them to.
for a while, the feeling of being wholly different faded, or at least, emmeline didn’t notice it quite so prominently anymore, and then suddenly it appeared again — but this time it had been because she didn’t know if she always felt like a girl. not a girl in the traditional sense, anyway, not some days. she liked dresses and fancy heeled shoes and tiaras, but found herself equally at home in plaid shirts and her father’s way-too-big suit jacket and kicking around a football, and for a half-asian barely a teenage… person (she’s still working on it), suspended constantly between two identities, it confused them (even though they’re perfectly aware now that those things are superficial, but the feeling still remains). the only person they ever talked to about it back then was aisha — their lifeline, their best friend, the one their parents reluctantly approved of because they had been so lonely for so long. while aisha was crushing on boys, sweaty and loud and just this side of too teasing, and starting to wear makeup and changing herself, emmeline was trying to find where she fit in, trying to understand who she was, who she is, why they feel so different.
in the midst of all that, emmeline’s letter to hogwarts came. just another difference for emmeline to feel, the knowledge that they have magic was unexpected and tore her family in two. the family she loved - her mother, her father, her lao lao and lao ye, and granny and pops - all had differing opinions on whether or not to accept it, whether or not to send them to school and deal with the fact, up front, that emmeline was, and always would be, special. in the end, emmeline’s pops snuck her out, following instructions from a professor mcgonagall, to find diagon alley, the place where emmeline suddenly felt she fit in. she could feel the magic in the air, could feel it almost crackling in the space around her, almost inviting her in. of course, it took some time — a little too much time, really — to buy everything she needed, and when she cried into her ice cream on the way home, overwhelmed and tired and feeling so many things, he was the one who held her all the way home.
he and their granny were the only ones there to send them off the hogwarts that first year, their parents reluctant to accept anything so unnatural about their child, but emmeline hardly cared at the time (even though it hit them later that night and they sobbed into their pillow), too excited to remember to even wave, too excited to remember to cry because she was leaving behind the only friend she’d ever truly known, and when they saw hogwarts, that castle appearing, they just knew. they were home. she knows, after years and years of being torn between two identities on so many different fronts, that people aren’y happy she’s here, happy she has magic, happy she calls this place her home away from home, that she laughs loud at the hufflepuff table and wears yellow and black face paint for quidditch matches and tried out for the muggle football team, but there’s nothing they can say to change who she is, her pride in the blood flowing through her veins, in the magic at her fingertips. emmeline’s always known they’re different, but having magic, being home at hogwarts, is the first time she’s ever felt proud to be so.

Desiderium by Trekkiehood and LadyFawkes Current word count: 15102 Current Chapter 8 & 9: The Useful Idiots; Eugene's Lament Rated: T for graphic descriptions of violence, wartime, torture, things of a POW nature. ATTENTION/ACHTUNG/ATTENCION: THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!! [Nor a repost.] DESI HAS BEEN GIVEN ITS FOOOOURTH UPDATE IN LESS THAN A WEEK. WHOOPWHOOPWHOOP! Chapter 8 (but not 9) also the first chapter in which I've flown entirely solo thus far. Doth my eyes deceive me, or does our hero make a reappearance??? Hold onto your butts, buttercups. You finally get to learn what Regis is all about. Eeeeep!!! This one's intense!! You also get to learn exactly what Eugene wrote to his dearest Rapunzel in the hour or so prior to his capture.
Overall Story Summary: Desiderium: an ardent desire or longing; especially: a feeling of loss or grief for something lost. Eugene and Rapunzel's lives are turned upside down when a war breaks out between Corona and Equis. As Captain of the Guard, Eugene is forced to leave his wife and daughter to fight on the front lines, where a tragic berserker attack leaves Rapunzel a widow.....or so she's been led to believe. Now prisoner to a sadistic megalomaniac, our severely injured Eugene must fight harder than he's ever fought before in order to escape dire circumstances and drag his way back to his family. With battles raging, the enemy advancing, too many fallen troops, dwindling supplies under siege, and especially absent their most trusted strategic leader, the only chance Rapunzel, Corona, and Eugene have is if the kingdom can still somehow pull off the seemingly insurmountable task of winning this forsaken war. Has dusk finally arrived for the kingdom of the sun, or will she rise victorious once more? Chapter 8 Summary: Eugene finds "help" in the most unexpected of places. (Chapter 9 summary & chapter posted beneath Chapter 8.)
Javeen’s men had concussed the enemy captain in outrage and tightly bound his wrists and ankles with ropes for transport. Naturally, nobody amongst them had consciously thought to put pressure on the enemy’s` wounds. On the contrary, most of them had gone out of their way to avoid such a thing…. Their reputation had always been annihilation of all opposition and a literal scorched earth policy. It didn’t leave much room, if any, for compassion or medical training; most of the time, it left even less room for common sense. Before dawn that day, Commander Javeen’s underling had initially volunteered to perform the honor of actually transporting the soon-to-be-captured prisoner, the captain in red. However, by this point, Avila was less than thrilled; Uhlan Avila didn’t want the loathsome enemy captain to leak his blood and other bodily fluids all over his opulent saddle. He’d spent good money on it, after all. This was an unforeseen complication for which the uhlan had definitely not volunteered. However, now….he was stuck with it. Avila sprinted over to a fallen enemy horse nearby, loosened the saddle, and reclaimed the saddle blanket, padding, and two leather straps. Taking the woolen pad and folding it over a few times, he rolled the enemy captain up inside of it with the blanket around the outside, and cinched up everything with the reclaimed leather straps. Uhlan Avila was pleased with himself for being so clever. It was that one action of vanity alone which preserved Eugene’s life to this point; as otherwise short-sighted as these bloodthirsty barbarians were, transporting the wounded -- even their own -- was not something for which they spared much thought or effort. And so Uhlan Avila threw the prepared prisoner over the withers of his horse and ultimately brought the prisoner, retching and puking, all the way back to Javeen’s encampment outside Equisian city walls. Thus the Equisian army had done the enemy commander a secondary favor by attacking before breakfast; one cannot puke out what one has not eaten. And thus we've reached our third unintended positive consequence that the uhlan mistakenly provided the enemy: Avila had rendered him virtually unconscious. It was a profoundly merciful thing, remaining staunchly unable to recall waking memory of being hauled away so inhumanely, bound and profusely bleeding, with no way to brace or prepare oneself for the relentless jarring and jouncing motions on the arduously long journey ahead. The same afternoon Queen Rapunzel of Corona received her husband’s final impassioned missive, the currently defenseless abductee Captain Eugene S. Fitzherbert, Prince Consort of Her Majesty Queen Rapunzel, was presented to His Imperial Majesty King Regis the First and Terrible of Equis. Regis preferred just the one name, as ambitious as he was, wanting to further distinguish himself from anyone else yet in the history books. Fully expectant that his captive should be brought to him on a silver platter, King Regis was royally put-out when he was instead Summoned to Javeen’s encampment due to a quote unquote “slight problem”. However, he was determined nothing would spoil his mood for that day. That day had all gone off without a hitch, apparently, every carefully laid plan thus far. As well it should, Regis congratulated himself internally. Nothing would be better than his moment of being able to gloat in the face of this unworthy thieving interloper who had taken up such a plumb station within the neighboring kingdom. Regis had heard all about Fitzherbert from his cousin before his death. What idiots Corona’s former royal couple must have been, getting duped by the likes of such a wonton common thief. King Regis vowed he would die before he let such an accursed scourge back into his palace. King Trevor had regaled Regis endlessly about his woes with Corona, King Frederic, and ultimately, the insufferable thief Fitzherbert. And Regis….well, Regis was like Trevor multiplied one-thousand-fold. While they were close to the same age, Regis had had a lifetime filled with
having the throne denied him.
His gargantuan height of 6’11” made Regis tower over most everyone around him. Though he was tall, he was also toned and muscular rather than massive; though he could yell louder than most, he also had a silver tongue. His cruelty, selfishness, and vanity knew no bounds -- nor did his taste for ostentation. Unlike Trevor, who had a very pointy pinched look, Regis was exceptionally attractive, broad-chested, and “strong as a bear”, with his close-cropped full beard and once-dark-hair turned a respectable salt-&-pepper. Yet beautiful as he was, every horrible family trait that Trevor had ever possessed -- and then some -- were magnified to abysmal new depths within Regis….which is why lately, he’d been experimenting around with giving himself titles of repute. “King Regis the Great”....no, too generic. “King Regis the Horrible,”...no. Again, too….pedestrian. “King Regis the Terrible”...? Slight improvement but still not good enough. King Regis brushed an invisible piece of lint off his shimmering blue ermine cape, readjusted his most opulent jeweled crown and sauntered through the massive tent flap that had been pulled aside in anticipation of his arrival. He strutted toward the back of the tent, where he saw his 2nd and 3rd in command, Commander Javeen and Commander Thaddeus. Thaddeus backed away at a steady pace upon seeing him, after the commander bowed, saluted, and announced his king’s arrival. Regis picked up on an undercurrent of agitation between his leading men. As he approached Javeen and a heap of old rags on the ground, he learned precisely why. It was not a pile of rags before him. Now abruptly seeing his Big Moment evaporate in front of his eyes, Regis rushed up to see who was this mystery prisoner. Surely this could not be Fitzherbert….?? He’d expected him to be a bit sick and groggy from a pre-planned hellride over horse’s withers but not….. And Regis roughly clutched at the hair of the prone individual and yanked backward on the head so he could see the hidden features. And though this prisoner’s face was filthy, it was just as Regis feared: he was indeed looking at the face that launched a thousand Wanted posters, his avowed newest enemy, thieving “Prince” Fitzherbert. The enemy prisoner showed no outward reaction to him nor anything else whatsoever. He lay still, eye closed and expressionless, his body completely inert. With fury clouding his vision, Regis tore at the saddle blanket wrapped around his prey. The blanket had all but adhered to those once-leaking wounds through Eugene’s torso. By this time, Cmdr. Thaddeus had backed away to a safe distance outside the tent. “What is the MEANING OF THIS!?!?” roared Regis, unclutching his once-intended target’s hair and crossing the tent to Javeen in less than half a second. “GRIEVOUSLY DAMAGING MY CHOSEN PREY BEFORE I CAN EVEN SEE HIM?!?! “My-My Liege,” stuttered Javeen, “I thought you’d be pleased to see him in such dire straits!” At this, even Regis was taken aback. Briefly. “To reiterate….you ‘thought I’d be PLEASED’,” Regis made mocking air-quotes, “to see the very victim I’d been planning personally to accost now for months, suddenly in a position where nothing I can do can possibly torture or make him hurt enough, the way he should be!?!” At this, Regis twitched his wrist and an impossibly sharp filigreed 12-inch-length steel stylus slipped silently out of a concealed pouch in his sleeve. Now, the king was deceptively, eerily calm, ever-so-slowly advancing on Javeen, who was inching away. “Did it ever occur to you,” Regis rapidly whip-sliced in an upward diagonal with the stylus, his impossibly-lengthy arm snaking out from him, “that I might need to play with him first?” And then he whipped the whisper-quiet blade rapidly on an opposing downward diagonal, completing an X pattern across the chest of Javeen’s tunic. His second’s eyes bugged out and he continued to back away from Regis, stumbling, clutching at and trying to press his tunic against the new fresh wounds underneath to staunch the flow. Gritting his teeth and trying desperately
not to cry out, Javeen well knew how screaming and crying to Regis would only encourage him further. “This dirty thief has information I require, you fool,” Regis whispered, with deadly calm, as he threw the stylus at the dirt and it pierced Javeen through his foot. His hapless second screamed in spite of himself and fell backward, his foot still pinned to the earth through his boot. “I pay you to kill, maim, and follow my orders to the letter,” Regis stood over him prior to leaving, “not to do my thinking for me.” After giving his original intended victim Fitzherbert one last longing glance, Mad King Regis knelt down and plucked his stylus out of the shocked man’s pinned foot as slowly and agonizingly as possible, making Javeen yell mightily again as crimson gushed out the new holes in either side of his boot.
Regis then wiped his stylus clean on Javeen’s trouser leg, and said loudly, “Cmdr. Thaddeus, Summon the surgeon or apothecary, whatever he calls himself. Tell him he has a new charge. JUST THE ONE,” he growled menacingly at Javeen, his implications crystal clear although he still addressed Cmdr Thaddeus. And to think, less than five minutes ago, Regis had been having such a fine day. ---------------------TTS------------------------- Chapter 9 Summary: Varian has a visceral reaction after eavesdropping on Timothy's devastating report with Rapunzel. After several key delays, the queen goes down to the stables to speak with Maximus....and receives a letter. ============ Varian gradually pulled away from the door where he’d just been eavesdropping on Timothy and the Queen. His head was shaking side to side involuntarily and his eyes had frozen wide open. Clawed hands raked through his hair until Varian was frantically grasping his fringe in shock and disbelief. Everything had gone numb as he continued backing away. His throat constricted for a time and he struggled to breathe.
“Varian?” Ash approached carefully and lightly touched his arm; he flinched violently at her touch. “Varian, are you okay?”
No. No, he wasn’t. This was impossible. Eugene couldn’t be dead. He just could not!
“I-I have to go!” Varian choked out. And he simply ran. He wasn’t even sure exactly where he was going. He couldn’t go to his dad, as Quirin was one of the few Coronian citizens to have actually seen bonafide combat. Thus his services would be required with Corona’s dwindling army now more than ever….. He couldn't go to Rapunzel, she had enough problems to worry about, and he couldn’t go to Eugene because he was- no. He wasn't. He could not be! Maybe he was only missing, not dead.
Xavier. Xavier would know what to do. Varian needed to find Xavier.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~TTS~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hey Max,” Rapunzel smiled a weak watery smile as she gently stroked the horse’s face. “Heard you had quite the run.”
She offered him an apple that he accepted from her hand….but he carefully set it aside and refused to eat it.
“Yeah, I know the feeling, my friend.” Pascal chirruped in agreement and nuzzled a little against Max’s face from the vantage point of Rapunzel’s shoulder.
It still hadn’t completely sunk in…..Eugene’s possibly being gone forever. By the time she had gone down to speak with Max about an hour after first speaking to poor Timothy, about a half dozen of their other soldiers had also beaten a hasty retreat back to Corona proper, as Old Corona was even less safe than ever, due to the out-of-control fire. Sometimes not all of these men arrived in one piece, either. Rapunzel subsequently learned the enemy had started an oversized funeral pyre…..but why?? They also independently corroborated Timothy’s claims of Eugene’s being run-through. And even worse, some said that Eugene’s stricken body had been thrown…..on the top of that funeral pyre. She’d heard the chilling reports corroborated more than once, from soldiers who had little to no idea what their fellow troops had also seen. She had had those tunnel nightmares for ages. And yet...hardly anything felt real. She felt detached from everything. Once the tiny and woefully wounded and bedraggled troop contingent had arrived, however, news had spread throughout the palace grounds faster than the fire that spawned it: Eugene is dead. The Prince is dead. Captain Fitzherbert died in battle.
Maximus let out a soft nickering. Rapunzel allowed a few tears to finally fall for real. It was a stark reality, seeing Max without Eugene. Seeing the blood on the saddle. Seeing the thick bandages on Maximus as he was carefully laid on his side, being cared for in the stable. Seeing everything, everything that she had once thought of as strong and capable and larger-than-life, and practically invincible….all in such precarious states. She just…..couldn’t…..
“I don’t know what I would’ve done had we lost you too, Max,” whispered Rapunzel. This was the only way, she decided, she could hold things together. With Max and Pascal, she could fall apart if needed, without anyone questioning her state of mind or suggesting she should step down from her duties. She just….couldn’t bring herself to give up on him just yet. Rapunzel instinctively knew that she was still the best chance Eugene had for being found. And that chance would diminish severely if she replaced herself with someone else in the highest command position.
Max nuzzled her hand before biting at his saddlebag and pulling out a folded letter with "Wifey" scrawled in hurried font on the back.
She accepted it with shaking hands. It still bore his scent and the official Captain’s watermark. Eugene’s. She could barely contain her trembling as she unfolded the pages.
My Dearest Sunshine and Darling Wifey,
The writing on the parchment here appeared peppered with large drops of clear liquid. Most of the ink was smeared, including the date in the top right corner, as if it were all written in a furious hurry. It’s doubtless the reason why Eugene never had time to seal the letter either.
If you’ve been given this letter, then I can assume I’ve entered a battle from which I will likely not return. Know that I did everything in my power to win for us. I’ve done everything in my power to return to you. I never wanted to leave you or Kleisonne. It was never my choice to stay away….but I’m sorry nonetheless. Not only do I have sworn duty to protect the kingdom and her heirs…..it’s most of all because I want you and our daughter to be as safe as humanly possible. You’ve been the best companion, wife, mother to our child, lover, and life-rescuer this flawed man could have ever hoped for. I’ve been more happy these past 5 years with you than the prior 23 years of my life combined. I’ve never wished more than now that an afterlife truly exists. Because whether in living life or afterlife, I would give absolutely everything I have just to spend even a tiny bit more of my time with you and Kleisonne, even if all I got to give you was a proper goodbye. I love you more than mere words could ever convey.
Also know how much I cherish you and how fortunate I am to have been given a second chance to get things right in my life. That never could’ve happened without you.
I’ll never stop loving you, Sunshine. Death couldn’t stop that before. Perhaps….the odds might smile on me yet again.
In my absence, I need you to be certain and watch that nanny. Please. My paternal instincts are just extra strong right now, I suppose but certainly you of all people can understand why I'm....careful. And in case I can’t return, please make sure Kleisonne knows I love her and that I never wanted to leave her. I didn’t abandon her by choice. Someone stole our time out from under us. Every moment we three are apart, I’m certain desiderium shall overwhelm me. Please….tell my dad how much I appreciate, love, and care for him. I completely understand his delay. I can’t imagine how difficult it would’ve been to pull together a virtual army and make his way back here in about 7 weeks. Two or three days shouldn’t have made much of a difference but in this case….? I fear Edmund will never forgive himself--but I will. Corona will still need him and the Brotherhood though, even if I’m gone. Tell Fred and Arianna thank you for everything…..they were my family at a time when I still had nobody else.
You were my new dream yesterday, you’re my new dream today, and you’ll always be the best dream I could ever seek, Rapunzel. I’ll remain forever your devoted husband.
All my love and more, Eugene
Rapunzel was openly sobbing now. Rivers of pent-up tears flowed as the Queen’s small body was wracked with uncontrolled weeping. She surrendered to the worst pain and emotional loss of her entire life. It just wasn’t right. It’s not fair for me to have saved him once, only for the enemy soldiers to get him just a few short years later.
Maximus whinnied low in his throat and nuzzled in, letting Rapunzel know it was safe for her to come closer, despite his bandages. It was clear the despondent horse didn’t care how much he hurt physically, which….comparably, still wasn’t all that much. The adrenaline still hadn’t worn off from his mad dash earlier, apparently. And it was the least he could do to give his queen a safe space to cry. She clung tightly to his neck, letting her tears soak into his mane. Maximus well knew how difficult it was for her to express herself when she felt vulnerable.
Events and every single independent corroboration thus far all pointed towards Commodore Fitzherbert having been killed. Virtually nobody had seen him alive since before the inferno effectively ended the battle. Several people had even witnessed his being run-through, and a couple of his men had even seen his body on a lighted funeral pyre. Rapunzel was wracked again with more sobs at these thoughts.
How could Eugene have possibly survived? Common sense told her he hadn’t. Yet everything else told her he was still out there, somewhere, needing urgently to be found. Everyone lucky enough to have retreated from the battle said they were certain he had not survived. Though it had been around 4-5 hours since the end of the battle, Rapunzel couldn’t give up just yet.
Most chillingly of all, the idea had finally begun sinking in….mostly due to morale being plunged to abysmal levels.
The whole kingdom had felt noticeably dimmer once everyone began to believe Eugene Fitzherbert was dead.
Willow is an uncommon wand wood with healing power, I have noted that the ideal owner for a willow wand often has some (usually unwarranted) insecurity, however well they may try and hide it. While many confident customers insist on trying a willow wand (attracted by their handsome appearance and well-founded reputation for enabling advanced, non-verbal magic) my willow wands have consistently selected those of greatest potential, rather than those who feel they have little to learn. It has always been a proverb in my family that he who has furthest to travel will go fastest with willow.
HOGWARTS HOUSE ANALYSIS
Slytherin Primary and a Burned Ravenclaw Secondary.
Slytherin Primaries prioritize their own selves and loved ones first. Slytherins don’t feel guilty or selfish about this– they feel righteous and moral. The most important thing is to look after your own. Abandoning or hurting one of your own is the worst thing you can do.
A Burned Ravenclaw Secondary might want to be skilled, curious, and prepared, but they feel like they are (or like people think they are) limited, clumsy, or inconstant. Gathering knowledge, hobbies, skills, or tools is the right way to achieve their goals, but Burned Ravenclaws know that’s not going to work within their capabilities. So they take other paths and use other tools– maybe a Gryffindor’s bluntness, a Slytherin’s flexibility, or a Hufflepuff’s slow and steady dedication.
You may have a Hufflepuff Secondary Model.
Hufflepuff is the House of grit, reliability, and determination, and Hufflepuffs use those values to help live, act, and succeed. If you model Hufflepuff Secondary, you also value these things and like to live by them. You like to be hardworking, dedicated, and consistent– but you wouldn’t feel guilty for abandoning those values in the service of other, higher priorities. If there’s another, easier way to get what you want– you’d take it. You think hard work provides valuable rewards– and those rewards are why you work. The work doesn’t have persuasive value in itself.
Despite his very best resistance he’s always been pretty empathetic in nature, he tries to rule his emotions as well as he can but fails more often than not. He was always one of those toddlers that if another kid started crying he’d be right along with them, not because he wanted attention but because he just couldn’t not. A bit of a crybaby, has researched how to magically seal up his tear ducts. Obviously managed to keep the family’s flair for the dramatic there as well. After a few years he leant into the sarcastic vague-snobbishness to hide the core of overwhelming anxiety.
Just managed to scrape through his schooling with nearly all top grades, this isn’t really due to him being a model student. He has always accrued information with a voracious appetite. Any knowledge he could find, even if most people would consider it entirely useless. His mind clicks into that place? You can’t keep him away. However, when there is not an immediate stir of interest on his approach to a topic he has to fight with himself tooth and nail to carry on.
Predictably found exam season highly stressful, was never open about it but was quietly competitive and silently smug over his good grades. Could comprehend well above his reading level from an early age and would often look into experimental research and complicated magic but found himself lost in OWL level History of Magic when chapter upon chapter lay ahead of him about something that didn’t catch his interest. Some people he beat just to spite cause he hates them. It worked, whatever.
Tends toward introversion and finds himself tired sometimes quite easily by a large amount of social interaction. Witty and big-mouthed when he feels comfortable or is in the presence of those that embolden him and very likely to get flustered and snap at people when things are becoming a bit too much. Especially if he feels however unjustly that someone is blocking his escape. Has matured slightly in this since leaving school but it happens still, he’s just anxious. Quite fickle and can at the drop of a hat decide that he’s done with you for the day once his Give Me Attention Meter is maxed. Could be an absolute bloody brat when he felt like it but feels he has grown out of it, which he mostly has.
Always been very, very aware of many people’s distrust of him and his family, he used to sneer and play it up if anyone tried to bring up his dad and go on the offensive but was genuinely affected quite deeply by it all. In his early school years, despite his weakness to the cold, he constantly had his sleeves rolled up to the elbow so that his blank forearm was bared as a statement to just about everyone. I am not marked, I never will be. Now he’s older he has more of a handle on things and can be diplomatic in situations where people are clearly discomforted by his presence and his family history.
Even though the war culminated far earlier in this verse I imagine Scor would have had to have been relatively sheltered as a child if not for how emotionally sensitive and prone to periods of ill-health he was, it was definitely for his own safety. He is still the grandson of a known high-ranking Death Eater and that made him a media target and put one on his back for anyone else that might happen to be watching.
Never produced much of a talent for offensive magic and wouldn’t resort to those methods unless he had literally no other choice, not a front line fighter by any means. His talents with strategy, potion-making, healing and his perseverance with defensive magic are what define him to the Order. While everyone kind of knows who he hung out with at school and who his friends are he is deliberately very mischievous with releasing rumours and misleading people. He deliberately keeps his cards very close to his chest so most people don’t know that he is aligned with anyone, he usually uses glamours or a scarf to conceal his identity if he has to.
While he is knowledgeable about healing and anatomy, he is the WORST at taking care of himself. The literal embodiment of Healers make the worst patients, tends to forgo sleep and basic bodily needs if he’s locked into what he’s focusing on. Sometimes needs reminders to sleep and eat, like a child.
Healing is the most satisfying part of his life and he would never give it up, he likes to experiment as he has a fascination with magic and muggle science and where they might intersect. A fucking nerd honestly. While he thinks he’s being fairly subtle about it a large part of his academic life has been doused in research into blood maledictions, for obvious reasons. He does his best not to flutter too obviously around his Mum. She is capable and ten times stronger than he is.
Lives in a small studio flat in Diagon Alley that is mostly stacks of books and makeshift shelves.
the stillness of the world the moment you take the first step into fresh snow, cashmere and fine wool, the pearlescence of dreamless sleep draught, the scratch of a quill on parchment, faintly tremoring fingers, a shiver up your spine in a warm room, the exhilaration of a problem solved, a thunderous grey overcast sky, the bite of a stitching charm, sleeves rolled up to the elbows, petrichor, the burn in your eyes before a well of tears.
Always had somewhat fragile health tending toward sickly. Hands are never warm, his existence is an endless heat seeking mission.
Went to one Slug Club meeting and used his time to verbally berate and or challenge most of the contacts in attendance, he was not asked to return.
Potions Club, Charms Club, used to sometimes be willing to be dragged to Dueling Club but didn’t enjoy himself.
Plays quite a bit of chess.
Bruises like a fucking peach and scars so easily.
Views quidditch as a good fly spoiled.
Is a very skilled pianist almost entirely due to his Grandmother’s tutelage.
Surprisingly great with children/toddlers/babies, no one including himself expected this, he mostly feared them beforehand.
Bit of a mummy’s boy in that he practically GLOWS when people talk of Astoria’s achievements.
When he has time off from healing he will have chipped black nail varnish on.
Highly intelligent but rarely manages to match a pair of socks, chews his quills but no one else’s.
While very eloquent and well spoken, he is markedly less posh than when he first arrived at Hogwarts.
When he isn’t prone to bouts of insomnia he can take a nap pretty much anywhere. He was once found in a tree after several frantic hours search.
6 Visual Hierarchy Principles Every Designer Should Know
Tumblr media
We are all living in a fast-changing world. As the technology to show a page continues to evolve, it is the responsibility of designers to organize the content clearly on a page.
But the question is – what is the best way to do that? The short answer is visual hierarchy.
Visual hierarchy can be defined as the arrangement of design elements in order of their importance. A graphic element’s visual weight determines its significance in the visual hierarchy, conveying to the user’s eyes what to focus on and in what order. It helps direct the readers’ eyes to the crucial content writing first and then to the secondary ones.
With the attention spans getting shorter and shorter, you must immediately guide the viewers’ eyes to the crucial information.
From brochures to websites to apps, these six visual hierarchy principles will help you design everything while ensuring a positive experience for the users.
1. READING PATTERNS
People follow the same top-to-the-bottom reading pattern, and the majority of them read from left to right. But even though knowing this is crucial for a functional page design, the designers realize that the task is much more complicated.
According to recent studies, people usually scan a page first to get an idea of whether or not they are interested before they commit to reading it. These scanning patterns are likely to take either “F” or “Z” shapes, and designers can undoubtedly capitalize on this in their design.
F-Pattern
This pattern generally applies to conventional, text-heavy pages such as blog posts or articles. A user moves down, scanning the left side of the page, searching for any captivating keywords in the left-aligned headings or first sentences of each topic, then pausing and reading to the right when s/he runs into something interesting. The end result of this scanning resembles something like an F or E or some shape with even more horizontal lines, but the “F” pattern has stayed.
Wondering how you can use this? You can align your crucial information to the left and utilize short headlines in bold, bullet points, and other such attention-capturing elements to separate different paragraph blocks.
Z-Pattern
This pattern generally applies to other types of pages such as websites or ads where the content is not inevitably put up in block paragraphs. A user first scans across the top of the page where the crucial information is probably present, creating an imaginary horizontal line. Then, s/he sharply moves down to the opposite end of the page, creating an imaginary diagonal line, and then scans across the bottom of the page, hoping to find some useful information.
Web designing often build the pages complying with this scanning behavior consciously, putting the most valuable information in the corners, placing the remaining crucial information on the top and bottom bars, and joining the diagonal.
2. SIZE MAKES A DIFFERENCE
This one is quite simple; actually – people read things that are bigger in size first. It is normal behavior for readers to notice the more prominent texts first on a page. It goes without saying that larger elements draw more attention than smaller ones. And that’s one of the reasons why significant newspaper headlines are often written in large, bold format – to capture our attention right away!
If truth be told, the fun fact is that this tendency of people is powerful enough to overrule the top to the bottom reading habit.
Designers can make use of this by making the engaging topics or headings bigger in size so that the viewers read them first.
3. SPACE AND TEXTURE
One of the best ways to grab your readers’ attention is by allowing your content sufficient space to breathe. Leaving considerable negative space around a button or broadly tracking lines in a text block will make these elements pop up and more easily visible to the viewers.
It makes such a huge difference that even a text written in a tiny font can become readily visible if you leave out ample white space around it, signaling its importance. Likewise, you can lay extra emphasis on a specific text by placing it in a box, separating it from the surrounding space.
When we talk about texture in respect of visual hierarchy, we are not referring to graphic texture effects. Instead, this type of “texture” refers to the complete arrangement or pattern of text, space, and other details on the page. It plays a significant role in determining the position of a design element in the visual hierarchy.
4. TYPEFACE WEIGHT AND PAIRING
The typeface you select is crucial to building a visual hierarchy. A typeface’s most important characteristics include its weight (the breadth of the lines that make up its letters) and style (such as sans serif and serif). However, other refinements such as italicizing can also play a notable role. You need to have a contrast between typefaces.
Remember, typeface strongly impacts the hierarchy order of the design elements. Nevertheless, there might be a few cases where you need to show an array of information as equally urgent. While you can accomplish the equivalency by setting all of it to the same size, doing so would also make it monotonous simultaneously. One way to avoid this is to differentiate the typefaces.
5. COLOR AND TINT
Here is another obvious fact – vibrant colors stick out from grayscale or muted colors. Lighter tints seem more “far,” and therefore, they go lower on the hierarchy than the darker and more vibrant ones. You can play with different shades of colors to create a striking effect and highlight the crucial information and sections on the page.
Colors play a much more vital role in mobile app design since the small screen size restricts your ability to employ other tactics such as wider spacing and size differentiation.
6. DIRECTION
Designers typically design the page layouts as per a grid of horizontal and vertical lines, both by tradition and because that is the most readable format. Such a system gives rise to a new way of building hierarchy – break the grid.
Text presented on a diagonal or curve will naturally stick out against its surrounding grid-locked text, taking all the limelight. This is a proven strategy that has been widely used in advertisements for a long time.
Wrapping It Up
Responsive frameworks are increasingly pushing designers to think about numerous different pages at the same time. Caught between dense text and shorter attention spans, designers need to figure out how to make sure the readers’ eyes notice the most valuable information first. These six principles of visual hierarchy exactly do that. However, remember the key is to practice. Learning this is not enough; you need to implement it as well. Try out different styles to get a better idea of how this works. Keep these in mind the next time you sit down to design a page!
I love your Wizarding world headcanons! You’ve talked about how you envision Hogwarts as a school of the elite—does that mean it charges tuition? If so, what determines who gets a scholarship (I doubt the Weasleys could pay full tuition?) What happens to Muggle-Borns who don’t go to Hogwarts?
I go back and forth on whether or not Hogwarts charges fees to its students--either tuition per se, or boarding costs with the tuition paid for by the state. There is Word of God on the subject--JKR has said that Hogwarts doesn't charge its students fees, though I can't lay my hands on the citation at the moment. While I'm happy to ignore Word of God if it's patently absurd (*cough* 6000 wizards total in the UK *cough*), this seems like a reasonable assertion.
The other reason I'm currently of the opinion that Hogwarts doesn't charge tuition is the way educational costs are discussed in the books--in addition to just the Weasleys. Harry worries that he'll run out of money for books and potion supplies if he wastes all his money in Diagon Alley, but not about tuition. Most critically, in the one discussion of financial assistance (Dumbledore's conversation with young Tom Riddle), there is discussion of money for books and supplies, but not of tuition.
So Hogwarts doesn't charge tuition. Students and their families are responsible for the cost of uniforms, books, and supplies, but there is canonically needs-based funding available for those things for those who can't afford them. (Funding the Weasleys do not appear to receive, by the way. Which suggests to me that the Weasleys are a family that regularly has to make hard financial decisions and handle their money very carefully, but not one that is in danger of starvation or homelessness.) I also expect (read: this is a plot point in my Big Next-Gen Fic) that funding would also be extended to Muggle-born kids whose Muggle families are unwilling to pay their educational expenses.
I do think, however, that Hogwarts has *selective admission*. That's why 11-year-olds have to wait for an offer letter. These are not exclusive to Muggle-born (or Muggle-raised, like Harry or Dean) children--Neville mentions recieving one. Selective admission is further suggested by mention of students who fail the first year exams not being allowed to return.
So the next open question is, how is admission determined?
One possible explanation is that, just like the grammar schools it emulates, Hogwarts bases its admission decisions on some form of testing. These is easy to arrange for wizard-born kids, of course--there's nothing in the text that says wizard-born 10- or 11-year-olds (in the year before they would start secondary school) *don't* sit some sort of standardized test to determine academic as well as magical aptitude. As for the muggle-born kids? Well, I can certainly imagine the Ministry sneaking appropriate items into the Key Stage 2 assessment (taken in year 6, 10-11 year olds), now that the 11-plus, the aptitude test formerly used to sort all students into secondary schools, is deprecated in most of England and Wales.
This does make a fair amount of sense, both in the UK school system (esp. as it was several decades ago) and for admission to Hogwarts, which when you look at it has an incredibly academically rigorous curriculum. (I swear those kids have written more essays by the end of first year than I did in my entire academic career, and I have a PhD! I'm also a mathematician, mind--we write proofs, not essays.) However, I don't personally like this theory, for a variety of reasons. It feels a little too mundane, for one thing; and I prefer Hogwarts admission continuing as it was envisioned by the Founders, who definitely had never heard of a standardized test. (If they had, they wouldn't need the sorting hat!)
My theory is that Hogwarts has another artefact, paired to the Sorting Hat, that determines admissions. I read a fic at one point that referred to a Book of Admissions, which I quite like. When the time comes to send out the Hogwarts acceptance letters, the deputy Headmaster takes down the Book of Admissions and see who's gotten admitted this year.
It explains things like the "Cupboard Under the Stairs" address. It also explains why so many Slytherins come from families that have been in Slytherin for generations--those are exactly the people that Salazar would have chosen to admit! (We don't hear that much about families that have been in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff for generations. Ron mentions that all his family are Gryffindors, but I'm pretty sure he just means his brothers.) Salazar's contribution would explain why there are so many legacies; Helga's why Muggle-borns are so well represented; Rowena's why they generally get kids bright enough to keep up with the academic work; and Godric's why they get students who are willing to keep coming back to that bloody death trap (I mean, come on, moving stairs!?)
As for what happens to Muggle-borns that don't turn up in Hogwarts' Book of Admissions… well, that's a good question.
Muggle-borns are meant to be Rare, but there are at least two in Harry's year in Hogwarts (Hermione and Justin). Out of 40 kids, that's 5%! That's not a rare sub-population! (For comparison, 5.8% of the US population are of Asian descent. A minority, but definitely not rare.) Now, with the relative sizes of the Muggle and Wizard populations, muggle-borns could be an incredibly rare event *for muggles* while still being a significant portion of the Wizard population. On the other hand, at least one of the possible sets of numbers for wizard genetics makes 2-3 Muggle-borns per year in the entire UK a possible real possibility--it might be that *every* Muggle-born goes to Hogwarts. (This strays into the wizard genetics essay I don't have time to write right now.)
Every Muggle-born going to magical Britain's most elite school doesn't fit well with societal attitudes toward them, though. In fact, we're given to understand that Muggle-borns at Hogwarts are a relative rarity; the presence of two in Harry's year could easily be a fluke.
Alternately, given the incidence of accidental magic in young children, I can easily imagine the Ministry detecting the majority of Muggle-borns at some stage in early childhood, most likely because they had to send obviators for some little thing or other. (I imagine the Obviator's office having a special division for that--Juvenile Accidental Magic, maybe. Also the closest thing to any sort of child welfare agency the wizarding world has, and wow, is there room for worldbuilding there.)
So there's no reason they couldn't be brought to the attention of other, lesser schools, maybe schools more local to them. In order to enforce the Reasonable Restriction on Underage Sorcery, which in turn is required to protect the Statute of Secrecy, it seems likely that wizard secondary schools are primarily boarding schools, or possibly day schools in wizarding communities which offer boarding for children living farther away and unable to floo in on a daily basis. (The existence of the floo network gets rid of the main historical reason for boarding schools, difficulty of travel.) So you still have small muggle-borns at boarding schools, along with wizard-born kids, which allows them to practice magic without violating the SoS left and right, and also (conveniently) provides an opportunity to acculturate them into Wizarding society. (Shades of colonialism? Yeah, a bit.)
It's definitely clear that, for the sake of the SoS, young wizards *cannot* be allowed to say, "The heck with wizard school, I wanna be an astronaut," and go to the local comprehensive. There's definitely an entire fic to be had there, too.
Reading Skills for Reluctant Readers
When it comes to reading, mathematics is likely not the first subject to come to mind. However, reading and language play an integral role in learning and understanding all types of math. From word problems to math vocabulary, reading skills are a must for success.
Yet, many high school students struggle with reading and comprehension for a variety of reasons:
“The two types of struggling readers most often encountered in secondary ary schools are resistive readers and word callers. Resistive readers can read but choose not to. Word callers can decode the words but don't understand stand or remember what they've read” (Tovani).
Just as many result to what Cris Tovani terms as ‘fake reading’ to get by in the classroom. In terms of a high school geometry classroom, these students may:
- skip straight to reading the textbook solution
- look at the word problem without paying attention
- read without understanding what the question is asking
- get distracted and forget the information in the problem
- avoid reading the problem all together
It is worth noting that, for the teacher, this is not something that is easy to spot as students with their heads buried in the textbook or worksheet appear to be actively engaged in the material.
As a result, it is up to educators to provide their students with the exercises necessary to produce good reading skills. Thus, there are comprehension strategies to consider in helping students to become effective readers. Here are three that I believe are particularly valuable to the math classroom:
The following question is taken from Pearson Common Core Geometry.
Tumblr media
- Use Background Knowledge
A = S x S = S^2
Square can be broken into two right triangles
Right triangles can use the Pythagorean theorem
a^2+b^2 = c^2
Creates a 45-45-90 triangle
Rules for special right triangles
- Asking Questions
What do I already know about the area of a square?
Have I used all important givens of the question in my answer?
Tumblr media
- Determine What’s Important
I don’t need to know that it is a garden, yet the shape is crucial
I should pay attention to units
Question is asking for length
I need to somehow find the diagonal
Most importantly, teachers should model this behavior for students. By being passionate about the subject material, it will in turn pull students’ focus and motivation to read. By using real-life applicable questions such as the example above, it gives students a purpose to read and makes class more interesting. Teaching by example allows students to see these strategies in action.
Giving students plenty of opportunities to read is the best way to improve their skills, but rather than just assignments and quizzes, teachers should have students reflect and discuss what they read. Analysis is a key component to any math curriculum, both verbal and written. This can help further student understanding as well as allow the teacher to check in and provide instant feedback on such.
Overall, it is necessary to redefine reading and reflection in the classroom, rather than eliminating it all together. By preparing students with reading comprehension strategies, it opens the door for academic understanding, confidence, and success in even the toughest of math courses.
2 | Inheritance
Harry managed a few bites of fruit and most of a sandwich for lunch and then Andromeda gathered them all up in order to floo into Diagon Alley. Leona hurriedly whispered to him that it was yet another form of magical transportation – one which apparently involved traveling by fireplace and made Harry think of all of the stories about Santa Claus – and that he needed to enunciate properly as well as focus on where he was going.
Harry could easily picture the twisting cobblestone streets, the Quidditch Supply shop, and the gleaming white building of Gringotts. Diagon Alley had left a strong impression on him after only a single visit and he doubted he would ever forget the way it looked.
“Don't breathe in once you step into the fireplace or else you'll choke a little on the smoke. Breathe in first and then step in and speak,” Leona advised as she reached out and took a pinch of sparkling powder from the pot Andromeda was holding. She winked at Harry and tossed it into the flames, pointedly breathing in before stepping into the fireplace. “Diagon Alley.”
Andromeda held the pot out towards Harry. “Would you like to go next?”
Harry felt a little nervous as he pinched some of the powder between his fingers. He followed Leona's directions to the letter, breathing in before tossing the powder and stepping into the flames. “Diagon Alley!”
The flames flared green and then suddenly everything was spinning and Harry had to close his eyes to keep from getting sick. It didn't last for long and then he was being thrown out of a fireplace, landing hard on a wooden floor in front of Leona's feet. He groaned in mild pain.
“It gets easier after you've done it a few times. Lets get you out of the way so everyone else can come through,” she said, bending over to help him up.
Harry gratefully accepted her hand, letting her pull him back up to his feet and a short distance away from the fireplace, which flared green as Aquarius stumbled out. She didn't fall over like he did, as she quickly righted herself and smoothed out her skirt before hurrying to join Harry and Leona. The three of them didn't have to wait long as Remy came through next, followed shortly by Andromeda.
“We're all here,” Andromeda looked over the three children with a pleased expression. “Harry, you and I will go to the bank to get everything squared away and we'll meet back up with everyone once we are through.”
The thought of being left alone with Andromeda made Harry nervous. She'd been nothing but polite and kind to him, but she was still an intimidating woman who he'd only met an hour or so ago. “Leona's not coming?” he asked, hopeful that his friend would step in and agree to go along too.
Leona shook her head. “Sorry, Harry. I need to go get fitted for new robes and I want to look into replenishing some of my supplies before the school crowd hits.”
“I could go,” Aquarius said quietly, gray-green eyes flickering from Harry to her cousin. “I don't need anything right now and it would make me feel less nervous about getting my test done next year if I could see Harry go through his. If that's alright with you, Harry.”
Although Aquarius was equally a stranger to him, she was also Leona's little sister and he wanted to make an effort to get to know her better, especially considering that it looked like he'd be staying with them for the remainder of the summer. Maybe having someone near his age would help calm his nerves.
Harry nodded in agreement and Aquarius beamed at him.
Remy bent to kiss Aquarius on the cheek, making her promise to behave for Andy, to which Aquarius responded with a sweet smile before skipping over and taking Harry's hand; an act which made her mother fondly sigh and shake her head.
They didn't dawdle near the Floo, quickly splitting up and walking towards their destination. Aquarius held onto Harry's hand as they followed behind Andromeda, who explained a few things about proper etiquette around the goblins and answered questions that Harry never would have thought to ask.
It wasn't unlike what he practiced in order to apologize to Malfoy the year before.
Harry fought back a cringe at the memory. Apologizing to Malfoy was his least favorite thing that came from learning more about the magical world, but he had to admit it hadn't been completely awful. The look of surprise on Malfoy's face when he approached and properly introduced himself was one he would cherish for years to come, and it was nice to be able to walk through the halls without worrying about being hexed by his sort-of nemesis or any of his cronies.
Evidently one of the few differences between greeting a wizard and greeting a goblin was in the way he was meant to bow. With wizards, he would place one hand over his sternum in a lightly clenched fist, while with goblins he was meant to keep both hands open at his sides when he bowed. It was meant to show that he was unarmed and something about goblins and wands that Harry didn't fully understand.
At least it would be easy to remember. Not that it helped with his nerves at all.
Aquarius squeezed his hands. “Goblins are kind of grumpy no matter what, but as long as you're polite they won't hate you!”
Harry attempted a smile, but he was sure it came across as more of a grimace. He didn't say anything as they entered Gringotts and he tried to hold his head high even with the attention that fell on the three of them as they strode over to one of the tellers.
Andromeda stopped and bowed before addressing the goblin there. “We are here about Mr. Harry Potter's inheritance test and to see about the unsealing of the Wills' of James and Lily Potter.”
The goblin, whose nameplate read “Narok”, regarded her with steel in his eyes before nodding. “Ganrig has been assigned to your case. He is waiting for you in Testing Room Three.” He gestured towards the opposite side of the hall, where there were several solid stone doors. A goblin stood at attention at each one.
“Thank you,” Andromeda said before ushering the children across the hall, carefully stepping around other witches and wizards as they hurried to-and-fro. They all stopped in front of a door with a “three” carved into the surface and bowed in greeting to the goblin there, who then knocked on the door and stepped aside, allowing them to enter as the door opened.
The office was done in varying types of stone; white floors marbled with green and walls of a darker brown. The shelves were made of something similar to the floor and had bold geometric shapes carved into them. Books and parchment took up most of the space, though there were also chunks of glittering gems. A sturdy desk sat in the center of the room, the top cleared of items aside from a simple metal bin, a roll of parchment, and a jeweled dagger. All-in-all, it was a space that showcased the talents of goblin builders and Harry found himself properly awed.
They all bowed to Ganrig and then sat once they were told to, with Harry in the center.
“The process to determine inheritance is simple. You will offer three drops of blood to the parchment and once your family's magic has finished, it will unroll and you will have proof of your claim as Heir of House Potter,” Ganrig said. He waited for Harry to acknowledge his statement, his expression unchanging, and then gestured towards the blade. “A finger will do, Mr. Potter.”
Harry could feel his arm trembling as he leaned forward and took up the dagger. He held his left hand over the roll of parchment, braced himself for the pain, and then quickly guided the tip of the blade to his index finger. It pierced through easily and Harry quickly let three drops of blood fall before pulling his hand away and returning the dagger to the table. His finger warmed and when he looked at it, the cut had already healed.
The roll of parchment seemed to glow as it slowly unfurled, revealing Harry's full inheritance.
Ganrig looked it over first and his only reaction was a subtle raising of one eyebrow. He seemed to think everything was in order and turned it so Harry, Andromeda, and Aquarius could read it as well.
While Aquarius gleefully latched onto the part where her mum was listed as Harry's magical guardian, Andromeda was more focused on a few of the troubling aspects that were revealed in Harry's inheritance.
“We will have to schedule a full cleansing,” she murmured, her eyes fixed on the section labeled: Magical Interference. “The dampener never should have been allowed to remain on you for so long. Typically they're removed by the age of five. And now it's clear that no healer was able to examine your scar for any residual magic.” Andromeda pursed her lips. “Ganrig, what are the goblin means of determining who took it upon themselves to illegally act as Harry's magical guardian?”
“There are several options that I am aware of, but I would recommend an appointment with the Judiciary Task Force.”
Harry found he cared less about the interference part and more about the bit where he was evidently the Heir of Slytherin. And what did it mean that he was chosen by Magic? Was that something significant? Did it mean it he wasn't blood related to those lines? If that was the case, then how could he inherit those Houses?
He didn't remember reading anything about Magically chosen Houses.
“What's House Emrys?” Harry asked.
There was a moment of stunned silence before Andromeda collected herself and was able to respond. “House Emrys is among the oldest wizarding families in the United Kingdom and is considered a Royal House by our modern rankings. It sits alongside of House Pendragon, House le Fay, and House Caer Lleon. We will speak more about this once we return home.” She turned her attention back to Ganrig. “I would like to request a copy to take with us, charmed to be unreadable by anyone without Harry's permission.”
Ganrig promptly agreed and removed a second scroll from beneath his desk. While he cast the necessary spells to create a protected duplicate, Andromeda took the time to explain a few more things about the Houses he inherited.
“Your Primary Lines show which houses you directly inherit. You are the Heir of four different Houses and will need to take time to learn about each of them. Recessive Lines are those you carry in your blood but have not been named as Heir. You should still study them in case that changes when you take your second inheritance test when you turn seventeen,” Andromeda said. “As far as properties go, you will spend the summer meeting with the goblins in charge of each of your holdings and then you may go and visit the ones that do not require repairs.”
Harry wanted to ask about his magical abilities, but before he had the chance to do so, Ganrig finished making a copy of his test and was preparing to move on to unsealing the Potters' Will. He filed away the original test and cleared away the dagger before a hidden door opened to admit a younger-looking goblin. He placed an ornate box on the desk and then hurried on his way without saying a word.
“I ask Mr. Potter to place his hand on the box, which will use a sample of his magic to verify that he is the son of James and Lily Potter. The contents of their Will are charmed to speak in their voices and a pensieve will be required as proof to the ministry that it has been read and fulfilled,” Ganrig told them.
“As a neutral third party, I will provide the pensieve,” Andromeda volunteered.
With that settled, Harry leaned forward in order to reach the box and laid his hand over the lid. It rapidly warmed and then there was a clicking sound that he took to mean it was unlocked, so he withdrew and sat back, letting Ganrig open the box.
At once, the voices of his parents filled the room.
“I, James Charlus Potter.”
“And I, Lily Marie Potter.”
“Of sound mind and body, do declare this to be my Last Will and Testament,” they spoke together, their combined voices making a powerful statement.
Harry struggled to listen to what they were saying, but was so taken aback by hearing their voices for the first time in his memory that most of his attention was on trying not to break down and cry. Most of it seemed to be straightforward anyway.
He was listed as their sole heir and beneficiary. All of the Potter properties and vaults belonged to him, which was reflected in his inheritance test. There were a few other names listed who would receive either galleons or personal belongings; Leona was named specifically by Lily, who left her a series of childrens stories. (A reminder of just how long ago their Will was meant to be read.)
“We name Remus Jane Lupin-Black as the magical guardian of our son, fully aware of the condition she is afflicted with. In the event that neither she, nor Harry's godparents - Sirius Orion Black and Alice Guinevere Longbottom – are able to take Harry in, guardianship will be passed to another approved name on the list we have tied to our Will,” James said.
“Under no circumstances is Harry to be left in the care of my sister, Petunia Evans Dursley, nor any member of my family,” Lily spoke up, her sweet voice firm.
“Furthermore, we must address the matter of our passing. If you are hearing this Will, then that means we have been betrayed by one we have long considered family. The Fidelius Charm performed on our house is one that is only broken by the death of the Secret Keeper. Should the charm be unbroken, it means they willingly gave us up to the one who calls himself Lord Voldemort.”
“We name Peter Benjamin Pettigrew as our Secret Keeper and forewarn that he has an animagus form of a common brown rat. Further details are listed in a letter tied to our Will.”
Aquarius gasped in shock, her hands rising to cover her mouth. Even Andromeda looked pale and shaken by the news, though Harry could only begin to guess why.
“With Harry's permission,  I request a written copy of the Potters' Will to be sent to the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and be placed directly in the hands of Madam Amelia Bones, along with a duplicate pensieve so she may view my memories as well,” Andromeda said, taking obvious care with her words.
Once Harry gave permission for the copy, Ganrig agreed to have it sent, though he had one more question for them before he could do so: “Which House Crest will be placed upon your message?”
“I believe Potter and Black will be enough to garner her immediate attention.”
While Andromeda handled things with the letter, Harry leaned over to talk to Aquarius, who appeared to be on the verge of openly sobbing into her hands. Heavy tears rolled down her cheeks, dripping from her chin and onto her blue skirt.
“Are you okay?” he quietly asked her.
Aquarius shook her head. “W-we didn't know. Everyone thought... everyone thought someone else was their Secret Keeper. Everyone blamed him.”
Harry frowned, slowly piecing together why Andromeda was so intent on sending a copy of the Will. If everyone thought Peter Pettigrew was innocent, then that meant he was walking around freely. If everyone blamed someone else for betraying the location of James and Lily, then that meant there was an innocent person in jail.
“They can get him out, right?” Harry asked.
“I hope so.”
It only took Andromeda a few more minutes to get everything settled and then the three of them stood to thank Ganrig for his time and left his office. Aquarius and Harry had to nearly run in order to keep up with Andromeda's swift pace.
“Andy, what do we do now?” Aquarius asked.
“We go home and wait for news. I'll send a message to Remy and Leona from there,” Andromeda responded tersely. Her gaze flickered to Harry and she slowed down when she realized she was moving too quickly for them. “We have a great deal to talk about. There are things about our family we have deliberate kept quiet about and you need to know about them in order to understand the situation we are in now. Do not speak of anything that we have learned until we return to Oakstone, do you understand?”
“Yes,” Harry and Aquarius responded.
Andromeda nodded in satisfaction and the three of them silently walked through the streets and back to the building that held the Floo network.
Once there, Andromeda stopped for a moment to write a quick note. She tapped her wand to it and it folded itself up into the shape of a bird, which fluttered its wings as it took to the sky and went off in search of Remy and Leona.
They sent Aquarius through first and then Harry reluctantly tossed a pinch of floo powder into the flames and stepped through. He hoped Leona was right about getting used to traveling that way. It was very uncomfortable.
“Oakstone Manor,” he breathed out and was whisked away to his new home.
