Wait why do you say "reject modernity (dick under 10)" when he was 8 in his first appearance? Dick was meant to be a child at first. He gave younger comic book fans a character to see themselves in. Older dick is the more modern idea
Dick was not 8 in his first appearance. This is a very common fandom misconception.
Dick was not given a numerical age for YEARS. DC did not want to give him a concrete age because if years passed, why wouldn’t Robin be growing up? No, it’s better to leave it ambiguous, and that’s what they did for a long time.
What we knew for sure was that Dick was a Youth. He was a boy as opposed to a man, he was a student, he was a minor in the eyes of the state, he still needed a legal guardian, and he was depicted as being “compact” in size.
Dick Grayson, the character, is actually older than the term “teenager”.
So they described him with words like juvenile, boy, junior partner, adolescent, etc. It was left up to interpretation and speculation. Given that Bruce trusted Dick to drive the batmobile, pilot the batplane, perform surgery on him, etc, we can assume he’s older than an elementary school student. This makes Dick capable, reliable, a competent partner to Batman, without needing to be coddled. Easy to self-insert for a young boy reading these comics!
Modern retellings of Dick’s origin story, of which there are plenty, insist on giving him concrete ages, some saying 8, some saying 9, some saying 12, etc. The thing you have to remember is that no age can be the end all be all “correct” age. Batman media constantly contradicts and reboots itself. But the modern TREND is to skew extremely young.
I believe they do it to subtly enforce a father-son reading between Bruce and Dick and dissuade any kind of romantic reading between them that was popular through the 20th century. They also remove Dick’s competence, his maturity, and his status of being Bruce’s most intimate domestic relationship, and give all of that to Alfred instead.
Personally I don’t think Dick Grayson was supposed to depict a child under the age of 10 originally. He was way too competent. I also don’t think Bruce would let anyone under the age of like 13 actually go out and fight crime with him. There has to be SOME level of believability. But that’s just my own thoughts.
TL;DR: Dick being explicitly 8 years old when meeting Bruce is a modern story element. Traditional Batman did not give him an exact age (but tended to depict him as if he were a young teenager)

# Fairytale - Yan!Mark Grayson x F!Reader
♡ ... › “Life itself is a most wonderful Fairytale.” - In which she comes to terms with a reality that doesn’t feel real.
── Words - 1.1K
♡ ... › Warning(s) - Graphic depictions of harm. Domestic abuse. Minor character death. Brief mentions of a panic attack.
── A/N - This is based off that version of Mark where he’s evil. No spoilers for that though! Think of this as an au of an au.
She figured the last of her friends were now dead as she watched their hideout burn from outside on the street, her knees bloodied from the concrete she slid on and her shoulder dislocated from the compact. Her friends didn’t scream – they were never given the opportunity to before he rigged the place to blow.
Opening her trembling fingers revealed a picture of herself from childhood. She stared into her younger counterpart's eyes, already knowing the way they viewed the world differed due to recent events. She lived in an apocalypse while her younger self lived every day as if it were a fairytale and she was the princess the story centered on. Except now there weren’t sparkly dresses or even flashier tiaras. Just death. Every street she walked on was a reminder of the kind of world she lived in with a dead body occupying every other mile. For a while, she was able to tell herself that despite all of this chaos, she still had people to keep her afloat and from drowning in all that grief.
But because of her, they’re gone now – dead from an explosion caused by her carelessness. They had warned her about going out and the risk she posed on their whole operation being found if she did. But Y/n had insisted she grabbed at least one piece of memorabilia before they hunkered down for an indefinite amount of time. If only she had listened. It wasn’t worth it, they were right. And she’d tell them as much if they were still around to listen.
She could only hope their deaths were quick and painless. But knowing Mark he would somehow find a way to draw out their ends in the worst way possible if only to prove a point to her. She found it hard to believe that a man she once loved was capable of such cruelty. It was as if a switch had been flipped the moment he and his father had that argument. The Mark she’d fallen in love with had become more rash, not at all caring about the consequences of his actions even if it meant those actions put her in harm's way. His new viewpoint on life was pessimistic whereas it was once optimistic. His trust in her had diminished into nothing and he’d become strict, not letting her do as she pleased if she didn’t have his permission to. He had explained that he’d made more enemies and that going out was dangerous since they most likely knew how much she meant to him.
After many arguments, she was forced to come to terms that the man she’d fallen in love with was gone. This new sinister version of her boyfriend contrasted too greatly with the sweet and selfless version she’d been in love with. All of the love that once warmed her chest lost its warmth and turned cold. Staring into Mark’s eyes no longer filled her with butterflies and instead made dread coil deep within her gut. Danger. Mark was dangerous, sure, she’d always known what he was capable of once he’d revealed his identity as Invincible. But she never once suspected that he’d use that power for bad – never once believed he’d use that power to make her life as well as others a living hell.
So she ran and never looked back. It had been a good six months since they last saw each other and she knew he’d find her eventually with all of the influence he now holds. She had just hoped he wouldn’t have gone this far and that the Mark she loved was still in there with all of that humanity that made him who he was.
Mark’s yellow uniformed feet landed in her peripherals, an eager skip to his step as he approached her and crouched down, his hand gently placed on top of her head. If she shut her eyes she could delude herself into thinking she wasn’t trapped in a nightmare and instead back to the time when everything was good in her life. When she was treated like a princess from a fairytale by the man who acted as her doting prince.
“Y/n…” He whispered lowly, his actions now mirroring that of an owner disowning their pet when his grip tightened on her hair. She winced, and Mark paid no mind to it. “Look where running got you.” She didn’t respond and Mark took that as his cue to continue speaking. “Aw, don’t be like that. Your friends were lucky to have survived this long, those who are part of the resistance die in worse ways than they did.” At the mention of your friends his tone turned ominous, a clear distaste apparent.
She tilted her head up so she was looking at Mark, mirth absent in a place where it was once believed to be forever stagnant. He showed no authentic sympathy for everything he’s done, though that should have been something she expected.
“You’re bleeding all over. C’mon, let’s get you cleaned up. I know someone who–”
She smacked his hand away and backed up as much as she could before her ankle was grabbed in a vice-like grip, Mark’s strength keeping her from moving any further.
“Y/n, you’re not going to make this any more difficult than you already have, are you?” He asked in that same sing-song voice, an obvious threat hidden underneath the tone that did not go unnoticed. She opened and closed her mouth, begging for her mind to get out of her thoughts but ultimately coming up empty. Mark made a noise of disapproval and grabbed onto her leg with both hands. “You’re lucky this is all I’ve done so far, I could have done so much worse by now.”
The crack her leg made when Mark split it in two was booming and was heard over the blood pumping in her ears and soon after she was screaming out in agony. Mark had his hand back over her hair, stroking it in downward motions as he hushed her as if she were throwing a childish tantrum.
“It hurts, doesn’t it?” He said softly. “Now imagine this pain but worse then you’ll know exactly how I’ve felt all this time without you.” If she was frantic before then she was beyond that now. She shook her head back and forth, letting out incoherent words between sobs. Mark watched on with disinterested eyes and then grabbed onto her other leg. Y/n tried to wring her leg out from his grasp before he inevitably broke that one too. But her attempts were all futile. She had passed out from the pain not too soon after her legs were both broken and when she came back into consciousness she was being carried by Mark through the air. The burning sensation that encompassed her thighs down was now a dull throb in the back of her mind as she cried silently in Mark’s arms. The picture that had cost her friends their lives nowhere to be found.

Helmut Lang : What remains behind, Curated by Neville Wakefield, MAK Center for art and architecture at the Schindler House, Los Angeles, USA, 2025
Every house tells a story. Some tell many. The famed Schindler House tells more than most. The architectural story of the first slab-cast modernist house, the progenitor of a mid-century experiment that situated Los Angeles on the intellectual and ideological coastlines of the great European and American traditions is well known. Less well known are the lifestyle experiments, contentions, dreams, allegiances and defections born within. This, the psychic architecture of the storied house, exists in the conversations around light, space, sex, the boundaries between inside and outside, between people seeking new means of manifestation that still cling to the patinated concrete slabs and fill the silent spaces in between. Within this real and imaginary framework, the work of another Austrian emigree lends its own version of what it is to be human to the concrete forms and enclosures that now house it.
Before being bound and hardened into fist-like forms whose presence now fills the empty rooms, Helmut Lang’s materials were soft, pliable, yielding and still bearing the scars of the past and the impress of memory upon them. His predilection for found or discarded material allows him, through the act of sculpting, to reshape narrative as much as form. Handed-down mattress foam, rubber and wax became the syntax of a language based on the malleability of material and memory. The results are works that both imagine the future and materialize the past. Literalizing repression, Lang calls upon the secret life of objects to reveal themselves through the prolapses of material whose meaning cannot be fully constrained. As a result, the tensions they hold are multiple. Neither entirely figurative nor entirely abstract, they bring a fundamentally reductivist approach to material that is deeply impregnated with the burden of history. Sometimes this reads as a confrontation between the body and its past derelictions. At others the current is sexual, an accumulated tension that itself becomes a stand-in for human identity, vulnerability and desire. Always they occupy a liminal space where form is in a continual state of becoming.
Within the Kings Road space, the presence of Lang’s sculptures transforms each of the storied rooms into echo-chambers reverberating ideas of materialized humanity across concrete, wood and glass. Proximity and aspect constantly change. Like emotions, they are fugitive, restless and refuse to settle into singular meanings and forms. Shape-shifting in character as much as form, depending on where one stands, they can appear mordant, lugubrious, tragic and even comic. But beneath these surface impressions is the undertow of darker sexualized forms of desire, a less palpable but more powerful energy field that forces us to confront the inherent tension between the body, the object, the gaze and the architecture that contains them. Just as all art is manifest thought, so these works are extroversions of interior conditions. Lang addresses the tensions between the public and private self. In doing so, he investigates the ways in which the invoked but absent body is both an object of desire and a site of personal expression.
Muscular and vulnerable, the contorted material is a registration of memory, a condition of post-traumatic distress that calls inevitably to ideas about the fragility of the human form and the malleability of identity. Time is compacted into the material. Disavowing the orderly rational illusion of time as steady and periodic, it pulses between the bodies of expression and reception as if to trace the unsettling arrhythmia of recurring traumatic experience. As with the architecture, what is within is without and what is without is within.

How to Stop Water from Pooling on a Patio?
So, you've got a patio—your little slice of the outdoors where you sip coffee in the morning, grill burgers on the weekends, or just stretch out and soak up the fresh air. But then it rains, and suddenly, you’re dealing with puddles, mud, and maybe even some slippery spots. Not exactly the relaxing vibe you were going for, right?
Water pooling on a patio isn’t just an eyesore—it can lead to structural damage, mold, and even safety hazards. The good news? You don’t have to live with it. Whether you're dealing with minor puddles or a full-on mini lake, there are plenty of ways to fix the issue.
Let’s break down why this happens and, more importantly, how you can stop it.
First, Why Does Water Pool on Your Patio?
Before you grab a shovel or call in the pros, it helps to understand what’s causing the problem. Here are the usual culprits:
Poor Drainage – If your patio isn’t built with a slight slope, water has nowhere to go.
Soil Settling – Over time, the ground beneath your patio can shift, creating low spots where water collects.
Clogged Drains or Gutters – If water isn’t flowing away properly, it’s bound to find a new home—on your patio.
Paving Material Issues – Some materials absorb water, while others cause it to pool on the surface.
Surrounding Landscape – If the area around your patio doesn’t allow for proper drainage, water can back up and collect.
Alright, now that you know the why, let’s tackle the how.
Quick Fixes for Small Water Puddles
If you only have minor pooling in certain areas, you might not need a major overhaul. Here are some quick solutions:
Sweep It Away (Temporarily)
If water is just hanging out in small puddles, a broom or squeegee can push it off. Obviously, this isn’t a permanent fix, but it works in a pinch—especially after a light rain.
Drill Drainage Holes (For Concrete Patios)
For concrete patios that hold water in specific spots, a few well-placed drainage holes can help. Use a masonry drill bit to create small holes in low areas so water can escape into the ground below.
Apply a Waterproof Sealer
Some patio surfaces absorb water, worsening the pooling problem. A waterproof sealer helps by repelling water, making it bead up and roll off rather than soak in.
Long-Term Solutions to Stop Water Pooling
If your patio regularly turns into a wading pool, it’s time for more serious solutions. Here’s what you can do:
1. Adjust the Slope
Water needs a path to flow away. Ideally, patios should have a slope of about 1/4 inch per foot leading away from your house. If yours is flat or slopes the wrong way, you might need to:
Resurface with a sloping layer of concrete
Use a self-leveling compound (for minor adjustments)
Rebuild sections of a paver patio to create proper runoff
2. Install a French Drain
A French drain is essentially a gravel-filled trench with a pipe that redirects water away from problem areas. It’s a great option if your yard naturally collects water, and it works well for patios that are set lower than the rest of the yard.
3. Add a Drainage Channel
If water tends to collect at the edge of your patio, a channel drain (also called a trench drain) could be the answer. These are narrow drains set into the patio surface, directing water to a more suitable drainage area.
4. Replace Solid Surfaces with Permeable Pavers
Solid concrete or stone patios don’t let water pass through, leading to runoff and pooling. Permeable pavers (like gravel-filled grids, porous bricks, or spaced-out pavers with drainage gaps) allow water to soak into the ground instead.
5. Improve Gutter and Downspout Placement
Sometimes, the problem isn’t the patio—it’s the water coming from your roof. Check if your gutters and downspouts are directing rainwater straight onto your patio. If they are, adding downspout extenders or rerouting them can help.
6. Landscape for Better Drainage
If your patio is surrounded by heavy, compacted soil, water won’t drain properly. Consider:
Adding gravel or river rock around the edges for better absorption
Planting water-loving plants (like ferns, hostas, or native grasses) to help absorb excess moisture
Creating a rain garden—a landscaped area designed to collect and slowly absorb runoff
What If You’re Building a New Patio?
If you’re in the planning stages of adding a patio, designing for proper drainage from the start will save you a ton of headaches later. Here’s what to keep in mind:
Pick the right material – Permeable pavers or concrete with drainage gaps are best.
Ensure a proper slope – Even a small incline (1-2%) makes a big difference.
Plan for drainage – French drains, gravel beds, and downspout placement all matter.
When to Call in the Pros
Some drainage issues can be tackled with a bit of DIY effort, but if your patio is sinking, constantly flooding, or affecting your home’s foundation, it’s time to bring in a professional. A contractor can help with:
Regrading your patio or yard
Installing a full drainage system
Lifting or replacing sunken pavers
Addressing major erosion issues
Final Thoughts
Water pooling on a patio isn’t just annoying—it can lead to bigger problems like mold, cracks, and foundation damage. Whether it’s a simple fix like sealing the surface or a bigger project like installing drains, there’s always a way to get rid of those puddles for good.
Need expert help? If you're in South Bend or the surrounding areas, Screenmobile of South Bend can help with custom patio solutions, including enclosures, screens, and upgrades that enhance your outdoor space—without the water mess.

Museums / Cultural Centers No: 164 Toronto Reference Library Location: Toronto, ON, Canada Year: 1977 Architect: Raymond Moriyama The Toronto Reference Library (TRL) is the flagship of the world’s busiest urban library system. Occupying over 416,000 sqf, it is a centrally located landmark which opened its doors in 1977. Designed by architect Raymond Moriyama, the robust five-storey building was clad in red brick, its mass scaled back by terracing the façade along the diagonal. Bands of mirrored glass suggested an inner world within. The narrow corner entrance, flanked on two sides by a colonnade, drew patrons into the building’s soaring interior. With escalating demands on the library system, the TRL recently completed an extensive five-year phased revitalization led by Moriyama & Teshima Architects, though its cofounder Raymond has since retired. The building buzzes from top to bottom. It is centred on a vast tiered atrium inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The interiors are bright, airy and uncluttered. A double-height rotunda dedicated to special collections reinterprets the romantic feel of old libraries with a distinctly modern material palette of concrete, titanium and dark wood. The building employs concealed mezzanines to maximize overall storage capability, amplified through the use of space-saving compact shelves. Open-plan layouts were rezoned for easier self-navigation; stacks were reconfigured to facilitate research. The library continues to explore and adopt emerging technological tools to better monitor collections and support learning and discovery.

Peace Amidst Chaos
Pairing: Simon 'Ghost' Riley x Original Female Character Rating: Mature (mostly for the setting) Warnings: MC is a sex worker Summary: In an alternate 90s universe, Sergeant Simon 'Ghost' Riley goes to a peep show and unexpectedly finds solace there Notes: This one is third person! But Kitty can be a self insert ez Special Thanks: Darling Deer, my beta reader! And Core always <3 Word count: 2,257 ao3 link
Sitting in the stall, filing her nails as she waited for the kettle to boil, idly listening to the sound of sex through the thin walls, it was hard to remember a time when Kitty had felt out of place here. It had only been a year or two since those early days when she had cringed at every smutty noise and flinched at every loud sound, but she had soon found herself a home here, constructing a thick skin to protect herself like every other resident here, but most importantly, she had found her family.
It was a family like most others in the city, made out of those who had lost their families elsewhere and had come to forge new, stronger bonds, one that could no doubt be found in a thousand apartments across the city, but still, it was special to her. After all, she was only here because of her newfound family, able to earn her own living rather than being penniless out on the streets; the debt owed to Dolly and Rose not only counted in gratitude but in the very clothes on her back, right down to the skimpy lingerie she was wearing underneath one of Rose's luxurious dressing gowns.
The kettle squealed as the water boiled, and Kitty lazily pushed herself off the counter where she'd been sitting, her bare feet slapping on the linoleum floor as she walked over to take the kettle off the heat, pouring it into the waiting metal flask, before setting it back on the hob on a lower flame, knowing that sooner or later someone else would want a fresh brew.
In the brief time between taking the teabag out of the mug, tossing it, and then going to the fridge to get the milk, Rose entered the small kitchen that served as the break room, punctuating his entrance with a small twirl, his baby blue chiffon robe twirling out around his waist. "Kitty! You made one for me?" She smiled at him, fetching his mug from the cupboard and setting it down beside her own, dropping in a teabag and pouring in the boiling water, taking the teaspoon out of her mug to stir his, "As always, Rosie. Good night so far?" He shrugged casually, tall enough to grab the sugar from the top shelf that Kitty had had to step up on her tiptoes to get, "So so. Pretty quiet. Military guys don't dare indulge themselves with all their mates around. You?" Kitty squeezed the teabag before tossing it in the bin, "Not bad. Enough to buy dinner for us tonight."
Their brief reverie was broken by the sound of the buzzer, and they glanced up at the board to see which one was lighting up. Kitty groaned at the sight of the bright red bulb underneath the number three, screwing the top and attached cup on her flask and then quickly slipping into her black strappy heels. Rose bent down to press a kiss to Kitty's cheek as she straightened up before leaning back against the counter, lifting his mug to her in a salute as she trotted out of the kitchen and down the tight hallway, passing a dozen slim doors until she reached the one with the bronze three screwed to the thin wood beneath the slightly peeling green paint.
It was generous to call the small space Kitty worked out of a room; it was little more than a concrete cupboard, the door whacking against the wall every time she came in. With it closed behind her, it was more than a little claustrophobic, three feet by three feet, if that, with half the room taken up by the small camping stool she unfolded in the middle, placing her flask down on the floor by her feet. She grabbed the compact mirror she left on the thin beige carpet beside her emergency book for slow nights and then sat on the stool, inspecting her face to make sure her large false eyelashes were still properly attached and her lipstick perfectly smudge free.
The rattle of the coin in the slot snapped Kitty to attention, leaving her just enough time to flip her compact closed and drop it on the floor by her flask before the thin metal frame that covered the thick glass window in front of her began to rise, rattling a little in the frame as it did so. She shrugged out of her warm gown, letting it hang around her shoulders, revealing the slope of her neck and the delicate lacy straps of her purple lingerie, offsetting her pale skin perfectly. She adjusted the cups of her bra to make her boobs sit higher, shaking out her long dark hair before finally turning her attention to the brief light she could now see coming from underneath the rising metal plate.
It wasn't unusual for the first thing she got a glimpse of to be a dick; after all, this was why most men came here, to get a quick fix staring at whoever was behind the glass, yet this man seemed to have at least a little patience; having not even unzipped his dark blue jeans. Kitty did her best to arch her back and stick her chest out, striking a classic seductive pose as the cover rose further, revealing more of the man on the other side, the dark grey of his fleece, typical military attire. There was nothing particularly remarkable about him until the frame rose high enough for her to see his face.
What was remarkable about his face was that she couldn't see it. The man was wearing a black knit balaclava with a white skull painted on the fabric, his eyes covered by a pair of sunglasses. It was more than a little intimidating, but Kitty was here to do a job, so she brushed off the unease and leant forward, leaning her hands on her legs and pressing her elbows into her chest to make it even more prominent, tilting her head at the man, teasing the strap of her bra down her shoulder. Still, he remained motionless; she couldn't even tell if he was ogling her from underneath his shades.
Of course, it was her job to coax the shyer ones out of their shells, to encourage them to piss away their money on getting a longer look at her, so she continued on her quest, letting her robe slip off her onto the stool, revealing the entirety of her body to the man on the other side, waiting to see if that elicited any sort of reaction from him, yet still, he didn't move an inch. It didn't seem as though any part of him was excited by her; when she let her eyes drop down to his crotch, playing up as though she was desperately attracted to him, she could see that there was nothing pressing up against the fabric of his jeans.
Even with the shy ones, there was always some hint of arousal, but this man was giving her nothing, not a single shred of desire to work with. Kitty kept her face alluring, but the gears in her brain were spinning, trying to figure out her next angle. Her voice flowed with the sultry quality that had become second nature to her as she looked over the man again, trying to find a new avenue to get to him, "What's your name, darling?" The man shifted in his seat, folding his arms across his chest, his voice deep and hoarse, "Ghost." It wasn't unusual for those who came in to give a false name; after all, Kitty herself was using a pseudonym, so she rolled with it, letting the name roll off her tongue as though it was the most seductive word ever invented, "Ghost. What brings you here tonight?" He shrugged non-committally, his tone flat. "Lads are out on the town."
With a grinding sound, the metal shutter began to slide back down, coming down far quicker than it had risen. There was just enough time for Kitty to blow a kiss to Ghost, her usual parting gift, before he was gone from view, bringing the slightly strange encounter to an end. It would be at least a minute until the next patron came in, so Kitty took the opportunity to lean down and grab her flask, quickly unscrewing the top to take a sip of the still-scalding hot tea as she listened for the tell-tale sound of the curtain being pulled open and closed on the other side of the glass.
Coins rattled in the other side of the booth as they were pushed in once more, and Kitty cursed under her breath; she hadn't heard the curtain go, so she still had the flask cup in her hands, the main body of the flask pressed between her thighs. There wasn't enough time to put it away, and she never liked to look rushed, always wanting to seem at ease, perfectly comfortable with every situation, so she kept the cup in her hands as she watched the metal barrier go up, idly taking another sip.
To Kitty's surprise, Ghost was still sitting on the other side, settling back into his seat after having leaned forward to put more coins in. She hadn't expected to see him again that night, assuming he was only there for the bare minimum required to fit in with the lads or that he would have gone to find someone more suited to his particular taste. "Back so soon?" She questioned playfully, going to screw the top of her flask back on. Ghost shrugged again, a seemingly common gesture for the man, gesturing towards her flask with his hand, "Don't stop on my account."
The realisation dawned on her then; she had dealt with this type of patron before, the types that wanted to show kindness, to feel as though they were a good person, 'saving' her from having to show her body, as though that wasn't explicitly what she signed up for, never mind the fact that she preferred not to have to make conversation; she hadn't mastered the easy chitchat that seemed to come so easily to the others. Regardless, it made little difference to her; she would get paid either way. Kitty settled onto her little stool more comfortably, pulling the sleeves of her gown back up and wrapping the tie more firmly around her waist. She took a sip of her tea, then looked at Ghost, feigning curiosity, knowing that what these saviours truly wanted was to have their egos stroked.
"So," Kitty began, as though she hadn't already clocked the answer, "What do you do?" "’M a Soldier." She smiled at him, "So you go halfway across the world and risk your life to protect people like me?" When he only shrugged in response to her question, Kitty's smile dropped a little. If there was one thing she knew, it was that soldiers loved to talk about themselves, to big up their achievements and make it sound as though they were the only things standing between the functioning world and sheer anarchy. She tried again, deciding to hedge her bets that this was a man who had very specific tastes. "Is there anything in particular you'd like me to do for you, Ghost?" He shifted in his seat, and Kitty waited to hear the no doubt perverted request he had come here to sate.
"Talk."
Though Kitty liked to consider herself a professional, her brow raised quizzically at Ghost's request; usually, the men who wanted simple company went to someone who could actually sit with them for hours rather than one who was stuck behind glass, unable to be touched. She wasn't about to turn down an easy opportunity to make money, though, so she merely tilted her head to one side questioningly, "Would you like me to talk about anything in particular?" Yet again, he shrugged. "Surprise me."
Even with her closest friends, Kitty struggled in conversations, and here was a complete stranger asking her to talk, putting the onus of the topic entirely on her. Her eyes flicked down to where she kept her book stashed, and she leaned down to grab it, holding it up so Ghost could see the cover, "How about Bram Stoker's Dracula?" He dipped his head in a slight nod. "Go ahead." Kitty settled herself more comfortably on her stool, slipping off her heels and crossing one leg over the other as she flipped through to the first page of the book, mostly tuning Ghost out entirely as she began to read, allowing herself to become immersed in the words.
For the next half hour, the only sounds in their small booth, other than the ever-present grunts and groans from elsewhere, were the sounds of Kitty reading, occasionally punctuated with the turning of a page, and the gentle clink of Ghost putting more coins in the slot. She wasn’t sure she’d ever had a client in for this long before; at times, she almost forgot he was there entirely, so enraptured in her book, only ever reminded of his presence when he topped up the remaining time with a coin or two. It was only when the metal shield came out with that familiar grinding sound that Kitty finally looked up from her book, her last sight of Ghost him with his hands crossed over his chest, rising and falling with his soft, slow breath.

“Who can describe these shameful acts as heroic? And yet the Democratic Socialists of America promoted the Times Square gathering and has lent its support to this rhetoric. Six sitting members of Congress—Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman, Shri Thanedar, and Greg Casar—belong to the organization, which sets the tone for many political intellectuals and journalists.
Accordingly, leftists on social media defended the idea that change must happen by any means necessary. Noah Kulwin, a contributing editor of Jewish Currents, compared the attacks to John Brown’s raid at Harper’s Ferry. Lake Micah, an editor at Harper’s and The Drift, hailed the attacks. “A near-century’s pulverized overtures toward ethnic realization, of groping for a medium of existential latitude—these things culminate in drastic actions in need of no apologia,” he wrote on X. It is interesting to find an editor at a prestige magazine celebrating bloodshed as a means of “ethnic realization.” And it is fortunate for him that he seems incapable of writing clearly, or he might simply have written, “Kill the Jews.” Gabriel Winant, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago, said that criticizing Palestinian tactics was “politically meaningless.”
(…)
In a 1975 interview, Harrington described how many on the left had adopted a “third-world romanticism” that spoke of the “US always being bad and the Third World always right.” Harrington lamented the fact that “some young Jewish leftists, feeling a need to prove their commitment to socialism and internationalism, had to be more anti-Israel than anyone else.” Harrington, for his part, identified with the Jewish state’s social-democratic tradition, while supporting Palestinian self-determination on peaceful terms.
Whatever can be said against this view, it is far nobler and more humane than what one currently hears from the DSA and its media and academic allies. Over time, the left’s opposition to Israel has only grownin part because of changes in Western perceptions of the country. What was once was seen as a secular nation, led by liberals and socialists and embodied in the kibbutzim, has now come to be perceived as religious and right-wing.
People who regard Western civilization as inherently racist, violent, misogynistic, and unjust have come to see Israel as the purest distillation of the essence of that rotten civilization. Polemics against the Jewish state often double as indictments of other Western countries, particularly the United States. “From Palestine to Mexico, all of the walls have got to go,” the rallygoers chanted in Times Square.
(…)
This week, millennial socialism revealed its moral bankruptcy. While videos of atrocities circulated online, its adherents made excuses for kidnapping, rape, and the killing of noncombatants. In recent years, millennial socialists have come closer to the Democratic mainstream, but they continue to distinguish themselves by their eagerness to overlook, excuse, or embrace the crimes of Palestinian extremists. In doing so, they forfeit any right they might have possessed to speak as enemies of injustice and cruelty.”
“In recent years, the concept of “decolonization” has been swallowed up by its metaphorical potentialities. The euphemistic second meaning the term has acquired in the process—a noncommittal verbal gesture toward symbolic restitution of certain historic wrongs—has facilitated its widespread endorsement by universities, NGOs, and media outlets. But as Hamas laid waste to southern Israel, writers, activists, and academics eagerly linked the term back to its original concrete referent: the often horrifically brutal struggles over territorial control that shaped the 20th century and that now risk returning to the fore as the Pax Americana falters.
The result is an uncomfortable predicament for elite institutions that have rhetorically embraced “decolonization”—but would surely prefer to eschew its more literal implications.
(…)
Here we find an indirect clue as to the true nature of the “decolonization” project that has become a prominent part of higher education: Like much of what now takes place in elite institutions, it is ultimately a therapeutic enterprise. Battles over land and sovereignty are displaced onto the psyche; the demand for territorial restoration has become a metaphor for internal struggles over identity and belonging for which universities serve as a staging ground.
But intellectual history suggests this therapeutic function isn’t as easily detached from the concept’s violent implications as university administrators might like. The Afro-Caribbean philosopher Frantz Fanon, who is generally regarded as the originator of much contemporary thinking on decolonization, was also a practicing psychiatrist. In his 1961 manifesto, The Wretched of the Earth, Fanon argued that violence was essential to the defeat of colonialism for psychological as much as for practical reasons: Without a bloody struggle against the colonizer, the colonized can’t heal the psychic wounds imposed on them by colonialism. Out of this crucible, he prophesied in the early phase of decolonization, a “new man” would be born. For Fanon, decolonization was therapeutic only insofar as it was also real, material—and violent.
In recent days, pro-Palestinian protesters have tried to channel the cathartic effects of anti-colonial violence invoked by Fanon. But as Israel’s response unfolds with Western backing, a twin narrative has come to the surface on the other side, with some supporters of the Jewish state also seeking catharsis in the meting out of reciprocal devastation to Gaza. Relatedly, a difficulty with any one-sided application of Fanon’s account of decolonization in this context is that Israel has its own account of psychic regeneration through nation-building. Some early Zionists, too, sought to forge a “new man” through a violent struggle to overcome the psychic effects of millennia of anti-Semitism and stateless subjugation. Both narratives retain powerful appeal far beyond the territories in dispute.
There has been no more fraught subject than Israel in elite universities in recent decades. Most of them have influential constituencies on both sides of the conflict, and they have consequently acted in contradictory ways, often attracting the ire of both Israel’s supporters and its opponents. But their reluctance and awkwardness in responding to the current situation hints at a problem deeper than these divided loyalties. For years, elite colleges—and other influential institutions—have lent their prestige to once-radical concepts like decolonization, seeming to imagine that they could be kept separate from the gruesome histories out of which they emerged. Fanon, the intellectual godfather of “decolonial” thought, wasn’t so naïve. As the world becomes more dangerous again, the luxury of metaphorical radicalism may prove too costly to sustain.”
“A horrified i24NEWS journalist Nicole Zedeck told cameras near the Gaza Strip: 'I'm talking to some of the [Israeli] soldiers and they say what they've witnessed as they've been walking through these different houses... babies — their heads cut off. Families completely gunned down in their beds. This is nothing that anyone could ever have imagined.'
How is it that Hamas has defenders? How does barbarism have any place in our modern age? How could those who think the ‘Palestinian cause’ righteous ever defend this unprovoked carnage?
(…)
A post-Holocaust world that vowed ‘never again’ has, this weekend, witnessed Jews ripped from the safety of their homes and places of business.
Hamas is now threatening to execute one hostage for every strike by Israel that comes without warning — executions they vow to film and release.
Who among us hasn’t heard the pleas of mothers, fathers, siblings, husbands and wives, begging for the safe return of their loved ones and felt their abject fear?
I think especially of the women and girls of Israel, going about their day as we might in the West, and try to conjure the surreality of being snatched by armed militants, beaten and stripped and made to walk through the streets while men spit and jeer, subjected to atrocities too obscene to print.
This is ISIS-level terror, moving from hard targets — planes, buildings, stadiums, subways — to a mass extinction event, innocent civilians picked off one-by-one.
(…)
Make no mistake: This isn’t just about land control. This is about fundamentalism and a deep, centuries-abiding hatred of women. These would-be warriors, targeting society’s most defenseless, are cowards.
(…)
Tlaib actually called it Palestinian ‘resistance’, leading to swift condemnation from New York Democrat Ritchie Torres.
‘Shame on anyone who glorifies as resistance” the largest single-day mass murder of Jews since the Holocaust,’ he slammed. ‘It is reprehensible and repulsive.’
Yet we see such sentiment thriving on the Left.
(…)
War didn’t ‘erupt.’ Israel was blindsided in an unprovoked terrorist attack on a scale and scope to rival 9/11.
The attack was further characterized in this piece as an ‘eruption of violence’ – as if both sides were to blame.
The American Jewish Committee reported that the Times never once used the word ‘terrorist’ in their Saturday coverage.
As for the supercilious female congresswomen who were so quick to excuse these atrocities — AOC especially, that self-described firebrand feminist — they should be shamed out of office.
Not least because their sophomoric, simple-minded stance is complete repudiation of what happens to women in war, a historical atrocity that dates back at least to the ancient Greeks. Rape has been used to terrorize the enemy, psychologically destabilize or to ethnically cleanse. In Rwanda in the 1990s, Tutsi women were raped by HIV-positive men recruited especially for just that purpose.
So commonplace was rape as a weapon that the United Nations didn’t declare it a war crime until 1995.
As for the shouts this weekend of ‘Allahu Akbar!’ over the naked, brutalized bodies of women, alive or dead, paraded through the streets — let us not shy away from this either, although some media outlets, the aforementioned New York Times and CNN among them, certainly are.
What a betrayal. What a cowardly refusal to report the truth. Ever since Hamas came to power in the Gaza Strip in 2006, the region has been subjected to Taliban-level repressions.
Women and girls have been forced to wear the hijab since 2007. Two years later, females were forbidden to ride behind men on scooters or to dance — ever. An Islamic group called Swords of Truth threatened female TV personalities with beheading if they refused to conform to strict dress codes.
(…)
We are now seeing such horrors writ large on the nation of Israel.
On 9/11, the world — the sane part, those nations that value freedom of thought and movement and equality for all — rallied around America and came to our aid in the face of unspeakable Islamist terror. Israel deserves no less.”

The Power of Precision: A Guide to Hand Winches
In the world of heavy lifting and manual labor, hand winches are the unsung heroes that provide the muscle to accomplish tasks that would otherwise be impossible. Whether you're a DIY enthusiast, a professional in the construction industry, or an outdoor adventurer, a hand winch is a valuable tool that can make your work easier and more efficient. In this blog post, we'll explore the world of hand winches, their uses, benefits, and how to choose the right one for your specific needs.

What is a Hand Winch?
A hand winch, also known as a manual winch, is a mechanical device designed for lifting, pulling, or hoisting heavy objects through the use of a rotating drum or reel and a crank handle. These versatile tools come in various sizes and capacities, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.
Applications of Hand Winches
Off-Roading and Vehicle Recovery: Hand winches are indispensable for off-road enthusiasts and those who frequently find themselves in situations where their vehicle is stuck in mud, sand, or snow. A hand winch can be mounted on the front or rear of a vehicle to assist in self-recovery or to help pull others out of tricky situations.
Construction and Building: In construction and building projects, hand winches are commonly used for lifting heavy building materials, such as steel beams and concrete blocks. They are also handy for positioning equipment, scaffolding, or formwork.
Boating and Sailing: Sailors and boat owners rely on hand winches to hoist sails, lift anchors, and perform various rigging tasks on their vessels. Hand winches for marine applications are usually designed to resist corrosion and withstand the harsh maritime environment.
Industrial and Warehouse Work: Hand winches play a crucial role in material handling and logistics in warehouses and industrial settings. They can be used for moving heavy loads, adjusting conveyor systems, and facilitating precise positioning of machinery.
Farming and Agriculture: In agriculture, hand winches are used for tasks like pulling out stubborn tree stumps, tensioning fences, or winching heavy loads onto trailers.
Benefits of Using Hand Winches
Portability: Hand winches are compact and portable, making them suitable for both on-site and remote applications. They can be easily transported to various job sites, and their manual operation means no need for electricity or batteries.
Precision Control: Unlike powered winches, hand winches offer precise control over the speed and tension of the cable or rope, allowing for more delicate and controlled operations.
Reliability: Hand winches are known for their durability and long-lasting performance. With proper maintenance, they can withstand years of heavy use.
Cost-Effective: Hand winches are often more affordable than their powered counterparts, making them a budget-friendly option for many users.
Choosing the Right Hand Winch
When selecting a hand winch, consider the following factors:
Load Capacity: Determine the maximum weight you'll need to lift or pull, and choose a hand winch with an appropriate load capacity.
Cable or Rope Material: Consider whether you need a winch with a steel cable or a synthetic rope, as the choice depends on the specific application and your preferences.
Mounting Options: Decide whether you need a portable hand winch or one that can be permanently mounted to a surface or vehicle.
Corrosion Resistance: If your winch will be exposed to moisture or harsh environmental conditions, opt for a winch with corrosion-resistant coatings or materials.
Gear Ratio: The gear ratio affects the winch's pulling power and speed. Higher gear ratios provide greater pulling power, while lower gear ratios offer faster operation.
Conclusion
Hand winch are versatile tools that find applications in various industries and activities. Whether you're an off-road enthusiast, a construction professional, or a boat owner, a hand winch can significantly simplify tasks that involve lifting, pulling, or hoisting heavy objects. By understanding the uses and benefits of hand winches and selecting the right one for your needs, you can work more efficiently and effectively while enjoying the reliability and precision control these tools offer.

<- Chapter One
Chapter Two: Future Boy Says Hidden City is Well-Hidden, More at 10
Casey's POV
Almost as soon as the knowledge hit, they were on the go even before the tank had parked. Leonardo opened a portal (one of the most recent that didn't have anything to do with heart-wrenching self-sacrifice) and all five of them barreled out.
Donatello shoved communicators into Casey, Leo, April, and Cassandra's hands as they made their way toward the lair at breakneck speed. Both through the communicators and via Donnie's voice on his left, Casey took in the instructions.
"April, grab Dad, as well as a spare projector and fold-out chair if you must." April gave Donatello a thumbs-up and ran in the direction that Casey assumed Master Splinter must be in.
"Cassandra, wake Raph and Mikey, tell them it's an emergency and that we will explain everything later. Have them pack preliminary necessities, if it takes more than five minutes then it's too long! Bring them to the Commons when they've finished!" As she ran off to perform her duty, Casey put on a boost of speed to quicken his stride and keep up with the mutants.
"Nardo, meet us in the Commons to portal everyone and their things into the tank and to wherever we decide to go; Casey, come on."
Casey followed Donatello, right behind the ninja, almost running into the latter's battle shell as he stopped abruptly at the bottom of a narrow staircase.
"Casey, grab all the vials and pack them for us all, then get suited up." Casey nodded without argument, grateful that for the most part, the vials of Herbicide were already bundled.
When he had finished cramming the surprisingly compact vials into a few fanny packs marked by name, he grabbed them all, dashing up the flight of concrete stairs he and Donnie had descended to get there, and deposited the packs on a coffee table adjacent to Leo. The mutant barely had time to recognize his presence before Casey was already clearing the entrance, and towards his decommissioned subway car, and decided that he'd change properly in the tank or whenever they found a resting place. He knew from experience that it was night impossible to fit most of his gear on with a loose hoodie, and he didn't have time to reconfigure his closet.
Settling for removing his shoes in favor of the (now significantly cleaner) ones he'd arrived in the past wearing, as well as donning the Genius Tech (TM) scarf, a spare wrist-mounted grapple gun, several smoke bombs, a loadable dart gun that currently held Donnie's latest tranquilizer fluid, a flask of poison that one could load in the gun in favor of the tranquilizer if they so chose (that Raph had told him multiple times not to eat), and two knives -- courtesy of Cassandra, who had adamantly stated that no son of hers, would be caught without a weapon in a time of need, no matter how many knives of her own she had to hurl to prove her point.
At the moment, Casey was incredibly grateful for Cassandra's provisions. He should be sure to thank her later.
Cramming most of it into a spare backpack of April's that she had lent him for sakes of both storage and means to sneak onto Eastlaird much more inconspicuously to not only visit her from time to time, as well as teaming up for repeated heists to obtain more Herbicide, as Donnie had recently dubbed the biochemical.
Casey took only enough time to make sure he wasn't missing anything before locking up his car as securely as possible, making sure the door was not only locked but jammed awkwardly so it wouldn't open properly unless it was obliterated before running towards the Commons.
When he arrived, April was arriving with Master Splinter on top of a folded-up fold-out chair and his projector. The rat still hadn't woken up but was beginning to. Cassandra could still be heard shouting various wake-up calls, and no less than a minute of Leo's anxious foot tapping later, she arrived at a run, Raph with a half-asleep Mikey perched on his shell, all three with bags packed. Donnie ran up from the narrow staircase as a miniature lab folded itself up and fit itself into a bag, presumably as per Donatello's instructions.
"Is everyone here?" he asked, and after a quick headcount, Casey nodded in confirmation.
"Great. Brace yourselves," Leonardo said before they all promptly fell through a portal.
As Casey looked up, he found himself to have fallen into the Turtle Tank once more, and Leo made another portal of his own to drop on top of the hood.
"Dee! Where are we going?"
Donnie looked at Casey. "What would you say our best bet is, Casey?"
Statistically, the resistance didn't have many hiding places that they wouldn't have to create from scratch now. But, then again, those hadn't worked for long. But the Hidden City... Up until a resistance member had accidentally allowed the Krang access while fleeing, the Hidden City had worked remarkably well. It would have to do.
"The Hidden City should work. So long as we aren't followed in."
"Hidden City, Nardo!" Donnie called to Leo, who nodded and made a small portal just big enough for himself to fall into, before appearing several feet above the tank, and drawing a portal with his swords that revealed, amidst the blue and white glow, the Hidden City in all its glory.
"Wow..." Casey whispered.
It was both weird and glorious, seeing the place without a single fire where it wasn't supposed to be. It very much was a mystic city. The portal was perched so that it opened on top of a roof overlooking the city from almost a skylight view.
"Why're we going there?" Mikey asked from behind him before gasping in anticipation. "Are we visiting Barry?"
"No," Donatello snipped as the tank warmed up again. No more than a second after Leo touched down inside the tank, the pedal hit the metal, and the tank crashed through the portal. Casey peered out a window at the garage behind them as they passed over the threshold of the portal, and wasn't sure to be relieved or terrified that he couldn't see any magenta goop or yellow eyes.
As the portal closed swiftly, Donnie began jamming buttons on the main console, and going off of the scans produced, he could only guess the genius was checking for evidence of Krang on any of them. He didn't seem to find anything, because he closed the scans with a satisfied grimace.
"Purple? Why did you bring us out here?" Splinter asked suspiciously. Casey could already see Donnie beginning to sweat, cracking under the pressure.
"Yeah, why're we out here if we're not visiting anyone?" Raph asked, eyes narrowed. Donnie didn't want to explain the predicament for fear of how the others might react -- the very same reason Casey hadn't broken the news when Mikey asked the first time. But Leo and April seemed to be physically incapable, and Cassandra looked too murderous at the moment to comprehend speech.
"Because..." Casey mumbled, half hoping they wouldn't hear him, only of course they did all pivoting towards him, "There are Krang in the sewers."
The pandemonium that followed was not unexpected, although it was ear-shattering as the doors opened and Donnie wordlessly walked out as Raph, Michelangelo, and Splinter all preceded to, for lack of a better term, freak the shell out.
"WHAT? HOW?"
"When did they get here? How did they get here?"
"Don't worry Raph, I'll protect you!"
Casey would have been lying if he wasn't a little reassured that the panic he'd been feeling since the Krang first emerged was reflected in the others, even as Raph, with Mikey clinging to his shell, shook him with such force that he wouldn't have been surprised if something internal had shifted.
"But," Casey continued, a little more forcefully to be overheard, and was faintly surprised when Raph stopped shaking him, only instead of letting him go, held him a good foot or two off the ground so they were on eye level.
"But what?" the biggest turtle asked, with a hint of blind, altruistic hope in his voice.
"But," Casey tried once again, "the Hidden City was one of the resistance's most well-wisher bases against the Krang, and it remained that way for four years. With the eight of us, it should be even easier to lay low until we can get rid of them."
"WOO! Yay for Casey!" Mikey shouted from Raph's shell, pumping his fists into the air before nearly falling off.
"What he said," Leo said before propping Mikey back up onto Raph. "But we still need... What's it called? Oh, yeah, a plan."
"That would be ideal," Donnie agreed, and Splinter nodded.
"What have you got, Blue?"
Leo paused for half a second.
Apparently, all Leonardo's thought fast.
"We're going to have to split up if we want to get anything done before tonight," the blue turtle said, and although Casey knew for a fact that Leonardo was capable of being serious and was liable to have moments akin to the present, it was still a little disconcerting, going from the (seemingly) carefree Leo to Leader Leo.
"Mikey and I will scope out some food options, April and Dad, you two call everyone down here who doesn't hate us and see if they have any tips or places we can stay in the meantime. Don, you and Cassandra go and get everyone's stuff fixed, there's probably a mystic blacksmith-"
"There is, he's a jerk," Donnie frowned.
"Well, grin and bear it for the moment," Leo shot back. "Raph, you look for any hotels or hidey-holes around here on the lower side, Casey, you check the upper side.
"We'll reconvene in three hours, check-ins every twenty minutes."
They all nodded and ran off with the urgency that only caffeine-empowered, sleep-deprived ninjas were capable of.
Casey was fairly adept in spotting things other people couldn't - in the apocalypse, it was something to be proud of.
This was why it was vaguely infuriating that, after two of the three hours had already passed, he couldn't find anything helpful, remarkable, or not.
'Soundcheck, who's still there?' April's voice, sounding a little tired, but active, sounded out from Casey's wrist communicator.
"I'm crossing over... I think the Mystic Library? Still nothing."
'Yeah, that's a no-go unless you want to end up in the kiddie room.' Donatello's voice rang out, and Casey could hear sounds of interference mixed with what he assumed were supposed to be sounds of shuddering turtles.
Casey did not know or have a particular desire to know what the kiddie room was or why to stay out of there.
"Anything on your ends?"
'Raph still hasn't found anything,' Casey could hear the turtle's gruff voice over the comms. At least they were both shooting in the dark. Not ideal, but Casey took comfort in the fact that he wasn't being thrown completely off the deep end this time.
'The purple one has fixed our things, future child!' Casey couldn't help but let out a noise of victory of his own at that news. He'd been feeling on edge, to an intensity he hadn't ever felt before, with his saw out of commission. Several times he'd only made it out alive because of his weapon, and with the Krang supposedly returned, a feeling of helplessness had been ramming his chest.
'I've called Sunita, she's recommended a few places, but they'll all be closed by the time we can reconvene,' April explained, and Casey frowned under his mask.
'Weeeell,' Leo's voice drawled, 'Mike and I are doing a-okay, we're not starving anytime soon.'
'Expiration dates?'
Someone - probably Mikey - let out a long, dramatic, and wholly deliberate sigh. Donnie let out a 'tch' sound over the comms.
'Two weeks.'
Casey was sure that everyone felt the tense pause as someone - undoubtedly Donnie - took a deep breath.
'We need to fix this, STAT.'
'No, not because the aliens who are very good at possessing people are in our abode, but because our store-bought food expires in two weeks. Loving your logic.'
'Boys!'
Perfect silence. Weird... Casey had never met Splinter, being a rat and as such having an infinitely shorter life span than turtles, so he had only heard stories as a child. Apparently, those stories were true. Their rat dad really could render them all silent whenever he decided to intervene. Casey wondered if it would have done much against the Krang.
'You all need to focus. Check in again after twenty minutes.'
'You got it, Pops.'
The comms went silent again, and Casey sighed before he leaned against a wall for support. To his utter shock, an irregular symbol in the wall began to glow, and the bricks opened around it, providing him with an opening. Casey immediately pressed himself to the side before peering inside the now-open wall. On the other side, he could see a tall building with a huge sign titled 'The Grand Nexus Hotel' from a perch on the continuing rooftop.
'The Grand Nexus Hotel'
Hotel!
Casey gasped and flipped up his mask to see it for himself. The sign indeed read 'The Grand Nexus Hotel', just as his mask lenses had portrayed.
"Yes!" He whisper-shouted to himself before crossing a foot over the threshold, and when nothing terrible happened, stepped over completely.
2034
"And if you throw it like so..." Big Mama, the silver-tongued and silver-haired spider yokai told an impossibly young Casey Jones, a cloaking brooch in place so that the latter could adequately mimic the former's stance as they both held a throwing knife.
Big Mama watched Casey Jones as she swung her arm in a swift, deadly arc, not letting go while her gaze seemed to gently dare the child to do so. Never one to actively disappoint as long as he could help it, Casey followed through, and the weapon nicked the target in the desired spot.
"Oh, how diddly-doodly excellent. Why not have another go?" Big Mama offered and handed her own weapon to the six-year-old. After all, six-year-olds born into a hellscape should know how to properly defend themselves, shouldn't they?
However, before Casey could do so, the pair heard shouts from the hall beyond them. Shouts of a familiar woman, more specifically from an ex-Foot general.
As the door burst open, it was indeed Cassandra Jones, black hair growing in, with a slightly panicked, boarder line fanatic gleam in her brown eyes that, had Splinter still been with them, might have recognized from Cassandra's mental breakdown before aiding the Hamato clan in defeating the Shredder.
She glanced at the scene: The boy whom she had claimed as her child was standing a good five feet from a target, another knife on the floor a few inches from it, presumedly thrown. Cassandra's eyes met Big Mama's who had an eyebrow arched in vague surprise at the interruption.
Casey, on the other hand, seemed to light up at his mother's presence, and hugged her, still holding the knife, while being very careful not to cut her with it.
"Are we required elsewhere?"
Cassandra's eyes snapped to the disguised yokai, and for once, she seemed to be internally deliberating her response. She glanced down at her son, still hugging her around her middle. Cassandra could make out a muffled "You came back!" before she gave him what she hoped was a reassuring squeeze before nabbing the knife from his grip in under a second.
"Can you teach me how to do that?" he asked with wide eyes. Cassandra seemed to hate-love it when he made that face -- then nobody could tell him no.
"Sounds like a tomorrow thing, doesn't it? Why don't you go see if Master Raphael needs any help with the provisions?"
They both knew full well that Master Raphael didn't need any help with the provisions, what with his incredible strength, combined with his mystic powers, while weaker since the Krang's mystic-nullifying screeches had entered the playing field, still made for some impressive feats. But, Raph, as he had Casey, Cassandra, Commander O'Neil, and the other turtles call him, always liked Casey's presence, and vice versa.
Casey nodded eagerly before running off.
Or, that was what his mother thought he'd done. He wasn't blind to Cassandra's panic and pressed himself against an impossibly small vent to be able to hear them.
Back inside, Big Mama's eyebrow was still arched as Cassandra retrieved the first knife.
"Am I required elsewhere?" Big Mama amended her former statement.
"No. I just returned from a deadly extraction excursion to find that my child is nowhere to be seen. While, to the best of his mentor's knowledge, he was uninjured, none of them knew where he was. Currently, they are a hairsbreadth away from tearing this place apart in the search. Thank the spirits he hasn't been hurt under your watch, or you'd have no appendages to hurt him with."
Cassandra held the knife three inches from Big Mama's good eye, the other having gone into disrepair after a Krang attack.
"I trust that the others know what they are speaking of when they speak of you -- you intend to reopen your accursed Battle Nexus and Grand Nexus Hotel the instant this wretched era passes. I will not allow you to drag my son into it."
On the other side of the wall, a tiny ear pressed to the vent, Casey frowned. He never liked it when his mom got scary like that, and figured he'd better go find Raph, or whoever he ran into first.
It wasn't particularly hard to find the search party, with the ruckus they were causing, Krang invasion and secrecy be darned.
"Casey?"
Casey looked around and found that Master Raphael's tone was a searching one, the one someone used when they were searching through rubble for survivors.
"Casey?"
Upon a second listening, he found that Master Leonardo was with him too, both of them sounded like they were on the brink of panicking when everyone else would normally have gone to leave the room while they collected themselves.
But, despite his gut instincts, the only thing that would make them collect themselves would be for Casey to find the room they were in, which was relatively close by.
"Sensei?" he had asked tentatively, waiting for a response.
"Casey?!" the aforementioned turtle's voice cracked slightly, and as two pairs of feet smacked into the metal flooring, Casey thanked anyone out there that he hadn't gotten cut on a knife.
He could make out a faint 'Did you find him?' before two masked faces popped out from around a wall.
"Casey!" Master Leonardo repeated, and swept him up, off the ground in a firm hug, before Master Raphael caught them both in an even tighter one. "Where were you?" Master Leonardo asked, with a faint laugh in his tone.
"Over there with Big Mama," Casey said, a little confused as to why they were looking at each other like that as he pointed in the general direction. "Then Mama found me, and I think she's mad at her?"
"Why don't you two find Mike, Don, and April, they're all still lookin'," Master Raphael suggested, before starting off in the direction Casey had indicated.
"You got it, big guy."
Present Day
For Casey, even now, no longer six, the strangest thing had been the hostility towards Big Mama after the fact. Having lived through some of the worst days of the invasion, he knew how not knowing someone's location for extended amounts of time could build into a panic, but it had happened plenty of times before - he had once been watching Master Donatello - When he was Uncle Don - work since he was one of the quietest people in the resistance that Uncle Don trusted well enough to allow in his lab.
However, with both of them so enveloped in their own thoughts, they had forgotten to notify anyone as to where Casey was, and Uncle Don was assumed to be in his lab more often than not. However, when Master Michelangelo had found them, he'd merely made Uncle Don promise that, unless he wanted Doctor Delicate Touch sicced on him (Casey still needed to ask Mikey who that was, whenever he'd asked Master Michelangelo, he'd just smile oddly and change the subject idly, and anyone else would pat his head and say he was better off not knowing) he would tell them whenever anything like this happened ever again.
But after the incident with Big Mama, he'd accidentally overheard several more arguments between her and various resistance members.
But Big Mama ran the Grand Nexus Hotel. Besides, Casey was all but completely out of options.
It was worth a shot, anyways. He'd play it safe and not tell the others who ran the place, no harm no foul.
