Belgrade Serbia - Music, Galleries, History
Triangle of Serbian National Institutions Nikola Pašić Sq.– Elorna It will be fantastic returning to Belgrade! Mediterranean resort towns like Datça are healthy and relaxing, but after a rejuvenating stay, Im happy to be back in a city. The trip from Tukey to Serbia will be tiring – Datça – Marmaris – Istanbul – Belgrade – but I’m not complaining. The worst part is packing heavy winter clothes…

Hi everyone! Thank you all for your attention and support! As promised earlier, I’m kicking off my series of posts about my Eastern European-inspired town for The Sims 3. Today, I’ll be talking about architectural references—what inspired me the look and feel of the town.
I wanted to create a city that could exist in any part of Eastern Europe. To achieve this, I primarily based it on Polish, Serbian, Hungarian, and Slovak cities. However, some buildings, names, and references are taken from other countries in the region. For example:
The fire station is based on a real building from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The socialist-era apartment districts borrow Czech terminology — they’re called "Paneláky" (a nod to prefab concrete housing).
My earliest references came from screenshots I took in "Euro Truck Simulator 2" while exploring the "West Balkans" DLC. Beyond just architecture, i studied street layouts, building placements, and environmental details to recreate that atmosphere in Create A World (CAW).
For the town’s master plan, I scoured Pinterest using keywords like "urban planning" and "masterplan." This helped me sketch out the basic structure, though CAW’s limitations meant some ideas had to be adapted — or even sparked new, unexpected solutions.
A stroke of luck was finding a suitable gray color palette with hex codes on Pinterest, which was used for most of the buildings. I think these colors make the city look as authentic as possible.
For building the "Paneláky", I searched for real-life building floor plans and blueprints in communities dedicated to Soviet standardized architecture. I also stumbled upon a YouTube video where a girl recreated a similar building from her childhood in The Sims 4. (I didn’t save the link, but if I find it, I’ll share it in the comments.) Combining these two approaches, I managed to recreate several different versions of "Paneláky" in The Sims 3.
Building private houses was especially interesting. You know the type — cheaply renovated, filled with carpets, and an unreasonably large number of armchairs and sofas. The Serbian real estate website 4zida.rs was a huge help here. Using floor plans from Pinterest and photos from cheap house listings on 4zida, I managed to build Eastern European houses that you’ll see in the game.
In the later stages of construction, once I had developed techniques and adjusted scales, I searched for suitable buildings on Google Maps and in photos from urbanist bloggers. For example, this is how the entertainment center on the outskirts of the Novo-Bobrowo district came to be. However, I mostly used this method when constructing one of the central streets, where I didn’t plan to place residential or active community lots.
I think I’ve covered all the main ways I gathered references for the buildings and city layout. Thank you again for your support — it means so much that you’re excited for this project! Stay tuned for more updates.

i've been working as a research assistant on a project looking at media depicting "warchitecture" in the yugoslav wars, chechnya and ukraine, and interpreting that as both historico-cultural semantics and as actual media. the project was inspired by and basically predicated on, the work of architectural philosopher/urban theorist andrew herscher, so i have a lot of the ideas from his work fresh in my mind. so with the ceasefire ending and israel's genocide continuing, i feel like it would be constructive to just share a bit from his book violence taking place: the architecture of the kosovo conflict.
herscher was working on his phd in the late-90s when the international criminal tribunal for the former yugoslavia (ICTY) asked him to join the prosecution and be an expert witness on the destruction of buildings during serbia's ethnic cleansing of kosovo 1998/99. and when working in the balkans collecting evidence and writing reports for the ICTY, he realised that relegating the destruction of architecture to an externality of violence was absent of the fact that the destruction and construction of architecture is a productive medium for expresing historico-cultural and political semantics -- invoking ideas of present and historical material conditions and realities, and enforcing them. in the case of kosovo, this was serbs ensuring the alterity of kosovar-albanians, projecting serbian orthodoxy over kosovar-albanian islam, destroying their communities to ensure they could not retain their autonomy, etc. one of the most common instances hersher encountered were the minarets of mosques being toppled, but the building left otherwise mostly intact. this is violence as performance, and as a means of engaging in a cultural discourse to marginalize and eliminate a community. it's a kind of violence which architecture reciprocates and reproduces meaning in.
attached a bunch of excerpts below. consider gaza and the experience of palestinians, and remember that the yugoslav wars ended with 161 political and military leaders being brought before a judge at the hague.

Manasija Monastery also known as Resava Monastery, is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located in the central part of Serbia, near the town of Despotovac.
Built in the early 15th century, it was founded by Despot Stefan Lazarević, the son of the renowned Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović. The monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and served as both a religious center and a cultural hub during the time of its construction. Its architectural style is a mix of Byzantine and medieval Serbian influences, showcasing the artistic and religious developments of the period.
The most striking feature of the Manasija Monastery is its impressive fortifications. The monastery is surrounded by massive defensive walls and towers, designed to protect it from potential invaders. This military aspect of the monastery is indicative of the troubled times during which it was built, as the Serbian state faced constant threats from the Ottoman Empire. The monastery’s frescoes, which cover the walls of its church, are also notable for their vivid color and detailed depictions of biblical scenes, contributing to the rich artistic heritage of the region. Today, Manasija Monastery remains an active place of worship and pilgrimage, attracting visitors for both its spiritual significance and historical value.

Church of St Peter and Paul on outskirts of Novi Pazar, Serbia.
Oldest church in Serbia with original parts dating to 4th century and additional parts of church from 6th, 7th and 9th century. During medieval times it served as baptismal church of Serbian Nemanjić dynasty.
Architectural style resembles that of early churches in Armenia, Georgia and Italy. Some important events connected with this church is baptism of Stefan Nemanja (Serbia's Grand Prince), Council against the Bogomils (Christian sect) and transfer of his rule to his son, Stefan Nemanjić.

авантура Цанмома у Београду
avantura Canmoma u Beogradu, or, the adventure of canmom in Belgrade
it's another one of these 'travels of canmom' posts! last time we went to Gamescom in Germany. this time I went to Belgrade for a company event.
Tumblr media
I can't actually talk that much about this one because the main thing I was doing was cooking up game pitches for what we might work on next (kind of like a game jam but just for concepts), and while that was very interesting and I learned a lot about how to get ideas across in limited time and make judgements about what videogames might sell and how long they'd take to make and such... it is however probably not something I can talk in too much detail about yet, because we might end up making these games, so I can't be like 'the theme was x and we pitched y'.
so instead I will mostly talk about Belgrade! and show some of the photos I took that don't have game developers wandering around in them.
Tumblr media
that's Nikola Tesla airport. did you know that Nikola Tesla was from modern-day Serbia (at the time, the Austrian Empire)? I didn't but I do now!
most of the week was spent in this fancy villa...
Tumblr media
...which is called the Villa Saga Paradiso. it must once upon a time have been some stinking rich family's holiday home, because it's a super weird building, with such features as a pool table, swimming pool, tennis court, library, and even a weird kinda stage thing on the top floor. definitely full of weirdly shaped rooms and interesting old furniture, it felt kinda like a place a moomin might hole up. so here's some pics of the place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also the view was kinda insane...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also! here's a pic of a Serbian snail that came out rather nice:
Tumblr media
anyway on Saturday we went into the city centre to do some more touristy shit. I went to the two places in Belgrade that presumably everyone goes, namely the Fortress and the Temple. but I also got some shots of the city centre...
(also a tram shot for the trams girls in the audience)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so as you can see, the vibes of central Belgrade are p Southern European sorta architecture, lots of pale stone walls and tiled roofs and the like. but you also have these crazy cool looking tower blocks from the communist period...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...which were unfortunately quite hard to photograph out of a moving car window.
But yeah, we were on our way to the fortress.
Tumblr media
Belgrade Fortress has a pretty storied history. At one point it simply was Belgrade; even after that, it's been occupied by variously the Byzantines, Turks and Austrians, who all made various additions and modifications to the fortress, and sometimes accidentally blew it up. Nowadays it's become a kind of park and tourist area, surrounded by the river, and thus some pretty impressive views...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as well as various things that tourists might like to look at, like statues of dinosaurs and tanks, and people dressed Historically.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
apparently you're only allowed 30 images in a post, so let me make another one for the Temple, which was the craziest building I saw, and the butt statue...

On the left bank of the Sava River and opposite the old town lies Novi Beograd, New Belgrade, the Serbian capital’s fastest growing municipality. It is a planned city and today’s inhabitants and businesses benefit from its rather modern infrastructure, a distinctive advantage over the old town. Novi Beograd’s construction began in 1948 but especially during 1960s and 1970s the municipality grew and numerous housing blocks and public buildings were erected. Because of these Novi Beograd in recent years has become something of a brutalist icon that is roaming social media platforms but is simultaneously subject to great change due to permanent new construction.
But while most photographers focus on the undeniable appeal of the architecture, Norwegian Marius Svaleng Andresen takes a closer look at the intersection of architecture and everyday life and the architecture in relation to the individual. In his book „Life in the New“, published last years by Kerber Verlag, Andresen explores the actual life going on inside, outside and in between the architecture: in view of the little stories of life the monumental architecture recedes into the background and becomes the stage of day-to-day life. People peeking out from behind the curtain, old men playing cards, a woman cleaning her windows and children running around, all of them populate Andresen’s photographs and bring up the question of what it is actually like to live in Novi Beograd. Apparently the photographer, who is also a journalist, asked himself this question too and met with 12 individuals who tell their own story of living in New Belgrade: there is Mirjana, the widow of a former military airport commander, who has been living in Novi Beograd for more than 50 years and at first didn’t really like it. And there is also Filip, the dog loving graphic designer and rapper, who philosophizes about the stepped volumes of the blocks and how they symbolize his daily struggle to reach the top.
In tandem with his sensible photographs Andersen provides an unusual, more humane portrait of Novi Beograd that is both visually stunning and emotionally touching. A warmly recommended read!
