As much as I love Duke and Damian being the most adorable brothers ever, the tension between them is way underutilised. They both have very tenuous relationships to the Robin identity, and if you look at their interactions in Robin War, it's shot through with insecurity and dislike:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Specifically, Damian consistently refutes Duke's right to Robin. Robin War is the event that leads Duke to quitting Robin, and arguably he does this mostly because of Damian; Tim and Jason don't really interact with Duke, and Dick essentially endorses him. But the beef is not one-sided, because Duke consistently hits on Damian's insecurities as well:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Damian belittles Duke's friends and entire cause; Duke highlights how unwanted and abandoned Damian is. They are simultaneous Robins with incompatible views of what Robin should be. Damian, fresh from his journey in Robin: Son of Batman, sees Robin as atonement, a link to Batman, and a representation of his personal growth; Duke, in the middle of We Are Robin, sees Robin as power, freedom from adult authority, and a representation of collective community.
The worst thing Damian can say about Duke is that his Robin is meaningless; the worst thing Duke can say about Damian is that his Robin is alone. They both say that to each other. And then, they both give up Robin:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Duke's case, he precedes saying "I'm not Robin" with "that's the difference between you and me." Their Robins are so wildly different, their ideals so opposed to each other, that they cannot co-exist as Robin. The risk of losing what Robin means to them, especially for Damian, fuels a lot of their early animosity.
This opposition continues in Batman & The Signal #1, where in Duke's dream sequence, there is only one person he imagines wanting to oust him from the family - Damian. But Bruce also pits Damian and Duke against each other in Batman: The Secret Files: The Signal, in Duke's favour:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bruce drags Damian down ('requires continuous supervision') to uplift Duke ('Gotham's best'). The writing in this comic is very questionable, but this is reminiscent of the way he talked to Cass about Steph in Batgirl (2000). Cass is the acceptable girl vs. Steph's unacceptable femininity; in a similar vein, Duke is the acceptable Batkid of colour, whereas Damian's heritage is 'inconvenient'.
Which is why it's all the more important that, despite everything, Damian and Duke do love each other.
Damian, despite all his (understandable) ambivalence and outward disdain towards Duke, pretty much spends the entire comic trying to save him:
Tumblr media
And Duke, when Damian defects to the Owls, staunchly refuses to believe he's gone for good. Tim and Jason also protest, but they get knocked out pretty quickly. It's Duke who refuses to give up on Damian. It's Duke who won't leave Damian alone.
Tumblr media
Even though their Robins are complete opposites, Duke and Damian both know how big a deal it is to choose Robin; as the two Robins of colour (besides Dick, whose position is slightly different), they know how easily Robin can be taken away. It's why Duke, a virtual stranger, is the one to break through to Damian when nobody else could.
Tumblr media
This panel from the end of Robin War hits so hard in context. Every interaction up until this point is antagonistic, and they have every reason to hate each other - but they don't. They choose not to. They choose to love each other instead.

im sorry why haven't tim drake fic writers used any traits from his New-52 "counterpart" (bros completely different but that besides the point-) in their own canon?
i would love to see a Tim Drake Joins the Batfam Late fic, where he accidentally joins, and pulls off a quadruple flip or smth, and Dick just. Stares. He's befuddled. Absolutely baffled. He was under the impression that Tim just happened to know more aerobics and gynmastics than normal people who join the nightlife.
Dick: ...
Tim: c'mon let's go for patrol
Dick: ... I-
Tim: ?
Dick: since when have you been able to perform my whole routine from Haly's????? What???? I slip up on it once, you don't let me live it down, but Tim?!?!?! When did you- I just- huh???
Tim: ...you'd think the World's "Greatest Detectives" would've looked me up? Wdym you don't know? No Dick. Stephanie stop laughing- Dick why would you accept me into vigilantism if you didn't know????
Bruce: I knew.
Tim: You don't count.
Steph: I Kn-
Tim: you were thirsting over me during the Olympics, you don't get a word. don't think i didn't see those live-tweets.
Dick, still standing and staring. No clue how to react. I dont even know how to make him react that doesn't lead to anger.

that reminds me i need to watch any and all adaptations of tcomc with eugenie in them. badly. even the ones where they straightwash her like gankutsuou. i miss her i miss her badly i need to reread tcomc i miss ittttttttt the adaptations are so overwhelmingly focused on the romance which impacts the revenge plot to the degree that morcerf is elevated to the primary antagonist above danglars and villefort and caderousse because where the others also wronged edmond, morcerf did it for the purpose of stealing his wife, which is the ultimate wrong in the eyes of a romantic story. there's not a great number of ways to condense a 1200 page story to a movie of a reasonable length, but i wish so many didn't make the genre shift to romance. it's been done before! there are other angles to explore it from! make a movie focused on the younger generation like albert and franz and beauchamp and have the main plot going on in the background! refrain from showing any backstory at all and only show how we get to the downfalls of the villains! i love mercédes, but cut the romance, i am begging you.
#my first impression of tcomc was the frank wildhorn musical which (surprise surprise) is a romance#wherein the revenge on danglars and villefort is set up and enacted in the space of one song#but it's been utterly supplanted by the book because it's so much BETTER. it's so much more unique!#it's an incredibly slow-paced and winding story with a hundred moving pieces and so many elements to play with#ive always been a particular fan of the ways the younger half of the cast are contrasted against the older#benedetto's arrest being announced during his marriage to eugenie#to parallel how both edmond and villefort had their weddings halted by the arrest of edmond#the duel between albert and beauchampppp man i dont even remember specifics but i remember it was awesome#hell i'm not asking for much. please god show me something where villefort's character isn't utterly mangled#hes a blatant foil to edmond he brings the most connection to the political landscape the novel was written in#hes so! GAH! his DOWNFALL was enacted by his WIFE the one he married after his FIRST FIANCÉ DIED#BECAUSE ALL MARRIAGES END IN FUCKING TRAGEDY#except like. monsieur et madame danglars. i cant remember if anything happened to them#i know the count drives a wedge between them but i dont recall how instrumental it is to the revenge. i was more focused on eugenie#godddd i need to reread this book . i only read it once and made it some of the way thru an audiobook#however. 1200 pages. audiobook was 52 hours long.#ok i read a chapter a week how about that.#if im trying to read a chapter a day then that leaves me 6 days to focus on reading new stuff and one day to count my monte cristos#at that pace itll only take me. checks watch. over 2 years to reread it

Bonus Photos from the Sept '19 Hoardscapes Folder

Comparison of two pairs of duplicate sets: Lake Blue Pearl (Set #52) vs. Azure Pearl (Set #129) on the left; Copper + Blue (Set #80) vs. Copper-Turquoise Alloy (Set #120) on the right.

Some dice mail photos of the first sets I bought from Cozy Gamer, as well as an Order from Die Hard Dice

And finally, the hoard all heaped up, sorted into individual sets, and then packed back into its bins and bags.
It's kind of quaint that it didn't even take up that whole coffee table when sorted at this point. It's also amazing how much more condensed it is when it's all heaped up vs. spread out.

Noel mentioned and confirmed to be alive, followed by Arthur getting torn to shreds? if this ends with John and Noel teaming up and getting some real substantial relationship development then maybe I could almost forgive it if Arthur does end up being permanently dead

MHRise by a Monster Hunter newbie. [pt 4]
I haven't checked the entire franchise yet but so far I've run into five wonderful types of monsters/hunts so far, classified loosely as follows: - i fight something relatively silly/weird looking, not too difficult, eventually becomes endearing or memorable; kulu-ya-ku, pukei-pukei, schnoodle khezu - i fight something somewhat basic looking, not super difficult, good for learning/practice; arzuros, great izuchi/wroggi - the rath wyverns; they know what they did. THEY KNOW WHAT THEY DO. - i struggle with something strange looking and dangerous, will be far tougher than the other urgent level threats; chameleos please stop stealing my buffs and turbo-poisoning everything -i struggle with something serious looking and dangerous, but they do something incredibly odd in the fight [kushala daora who spent the majority of its time fight hopping between cliffs or outright fleeing to other zones, or teostra who..... used the biggest scariest possibly lethal explosion move it had... while I was absolutely not even close enough to hit? twice?
Anyway, that's my personal take on the monsters i've encoun-
