instead of, you know, writing, i made this tracker for the racing verse. so interesting to see how bit by bit the hit count faltered (completely understandable, the gaps between uploads since, like, work 13 have grown increasingly - instead of 2 uploads per month it became 1 upload every 2 months) but then suddenly medical treatment needed gained a lot of hits! is it the somnophilia? i bet it is huh.

orange is word count, purple is hit count (i expected there to be a correlation between the two but was surprised to find it wasn't per se the case)

other mildly interesting notes:

on edge, the work with highest word count (almost 10k) has just a hundred less hits than its follow-up pressing all your buttons which has half its word count

unsurprising but the T-rated always on top of you is the first one to get under 1k hits (around 800) followed by lucky rain with 900, then two works with 1k+ hits and then the last two works red light, green light and expensive touches have 600+ and 500+ hits respectively.

the most average hit count is 1330, which 3 works are incredibly close to (with just over 1300 hits)

i'd think the hit count would go down with each work, and while that is true for the last two works, it's not true for work 17&18 which both have over 1k hits, with work 18 having 1500 hits.

unsurprising but still cool: the highest hit count goes to the first work in the series (2,3k+)

Ryan and Shane as Trolls: An AU made just for me

Ryan and Shane would both be Pop Troll that just grew up in different regions. Ryan would’ve lived and traveled around with his family but mostly resided in Vibe City. Shane lived in the Volcano Rock City but moved to Vibe City when he was older, following his brother. Surprisedly, they wouldn’t meet until they bumped into each other in a forest.

Ryan left because he wanted to explore the world, as he was accustomed to witnessing news things, and because he wanted to peruse the hunt of the supernatural. He also left for more personal reasons.

Shane left because nobody in Vibe City knew what Indie Rock was.

Heyo shippers & readers!

Early March and 3 months into the year; we thought we'd solicit something special this round by asking our members to nominate a fic they know has been in our runners-up queue again and again and again. That fic we've all been hankering to read and for whatever reason, was always the bridesmaid of fics we chose to read and discuss together. With a tiebreaker and an emergency poll, we finally landed on Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered Am I by colazitron.

Something about the hype really made this read worth the wait. Many of our members agreed that the themes therein felt like the most classic of our favourite motifs. Moreover that it was clearly inspired by a deeply resonant moment in shyan history really had us yelling during the live-read.

Summary:

Look, just because Ryan looks good dressed as Indiana Jones, or dressed in various other things, and just because Shane maybe has a feeling or two about it, doesn't mean it's a thing, okay? Shane's got this.

Or: 5 times Shane had a feeling about Ryan's outfit, +1 time he did something about it

I'll read 50000 Shane spiraling about Indiana bergara and I'm so glad there was one out there I had never gotten to

I really also appreciate this fic for showing that level of how comfortable they are with each other, like that but also Shane saying "she thought I'm going to tap that" and Ryan laughing about it in the beginning of the fic

this is one of those fics I totally forgot about after reading in my early days of being a Watcher fan but it’s full of so many classic tropes, I’m very fond and it was fun to re-read

the humor in the writing is top notch. the tone is so consistent throughout, and nothing is ever fully serious

it was okay because shane wasnt turned on by it and he knew ryan wouldnt be either because no one is getting off but to then have this reverse dream where he’s trying so hard not to think about ryan, and he ends up conjuring a fantasy where he’s blowing ryan and getting off to it???? gorgeous beautiful amazing my kingdom to cola for this

Something about him being in the full outfit in first and last example where feelings begin vs are said aloud puts a nice bow on this story

I also love the way [the author] had Shane's worry and denial over his feelings for Ryan was the major conflict in getting together, but them actually getting together was so right and so easy for them and right there the whole time and ;aksdjf;lkdsj;fjkasl;d.

Shane’s progression from acknowledging Ryan being attractive, to admitting being attracted, and finally realizing it had become a feelings situation flows wonderfully. This is a delightful read.

I was debating on whether to come back to tumblr or not then I saw the url that matches my ao3 (and discord) account was available! (I don't think it was when I started this blog) so I'm taking it as a sign it's time to come back. plus I wanted to post some fics this year, so we'll see how that goes. no idea what fandoms I'll be blogging most. probably still some watcher (but maybe a little less on the shyan). I've gotten back into doctor who, which has been fun. maybe there'll be some more marvel (stony and lokius) things. thank you to everyone who left me a kind message while I was gone <3 I wouldn't say I'm feeling 100% better but I want to try to work through my low feelings by creating more things, and I'd like to have a place to share them with you all when I do.

collapse in threads by sky_somedays is at 20,179 words and begs the question of what exactly the boys would do if they suddenly developed superpowers and also were in love? A very recent read for me, and features in my Halloween Rec List. [canonverse]

Light Metaphors by sohapppily is one of my favourite fics in fandom - it feels incredibly real, and is written beautifully. Written entirely from Ryan's perspective as he pines for a Shane who is in a relationship. Gorgeous angst, with a happy ending. Clocks in at about 68k. [canonverse]

The Thrilling Case of the Mysterious Five by MiraclesofPaul really works for me because I fucking lock the cryptid academia vibes of early Unsolved Ryan and I absolutely feel like we as a fandom did not play with that more, but this fic ABSOLUTELY does that. Accurate tags are accurate when they called this "x-files au if you squint" and i love it. Sits at 57k.

Like Wildfire by makemadej (santamonicayachtclub) is 20k words of a really unique take on Shane, who gets himself (and Ryan) into shenanigans by not being super adept at the heart to brain to mouth filter. Also features a brand new kink that possibly only exists in this fandom. [canonverse]

pendulum by soyul is 150k of a paranormal detective AU and it's incredibly underrated for how HOOKED I was throughout the entirety of it.

Ancient Magical Wishing Well Verse features two things people are sometimes iffy with, which is the 'woke up with different bits' trope and mpreg, but at 36k words its honestly amazing and deserves so much love. [canonverse]

This Tornado Loves You by sequence_fairy. The thing about BFU/Watcher is that I honestly believe it should have a lot more 'niche interests' AU, because Shane and Ryan are absolutely kings of niche interests, and even though I don't think Ryan has even ever experienced a tornado I just think they'd be proud of 22k tornado chasers fic. It fits their vibe.

Edge of Town by Justspookythingz, which I read because it was labeled 'midwestern gothic' and I like gothic anything. A very creepy story about Shane and Ryan being stuck in a weird town. You can see that I got into BFU because I love the creepy and the eerie. [canonverse] (but is mostly a horror)

not always from the sky by yellowhalcyon - 30k and very hard to describe, but it features aliens and demons, Ryan house-sitting in the desert, my usual love of The Weird and, as usual, Shane and Ryan falling in love.

Want You In My Court by Ourladyofresurrection. I recced this in my recent bottom Bergara rec list but I want to re-highlight it because it got me to read a university AU and as you can see by the above recs I'm more of a ... not of this world type of fic fan. But it features phone sex operator Shane rocking Ryan's world and then they do a group project together and fall in love, in that order.

Oh, Ye Of Little Faith by youvebeenscuppered. Was aiming for ten but I thought I recced too many AUs and not enough set in the canon verse! This one was fun and sexy and features a Mysterious Box that Shane is desperate to get inside of (but maybe not as desperate as he is to get inside of Ryan, heyo!) [canonverse]

Just stopping by to tell you how much I love your shyan fanfics. Your stories are all-consuming, and I especially enjoy the angst. (I have to confess I was a bit sad when I read the “no serious bodily harm will come to these characters we promise”-tag.🫣)

Looking through your blog I assume you’re primarily a Rhett and Link fan. Therefore I’m curious what made you start writing shyan fics? What pulled you into the ghoul boys fandom in general?

Thank you!!! First I wanna say, both Shyan fics and the last Rhink fic I worked on were co-written with @tripwirealarm. Credit goes hugely to them, because left to my own devices, I struggle to finish shit.

What pulled me into the ghoul boys fandom in general: That'd be A. @tripwirealarm one day was watching BFU and I asked her "oh no you don't ship them do you?" and she said (and I quote) "I don’t really but it’s hard not to. Cut from laying in bed together in the dark bickering about wanting to use the jacuzzi tub to sitting in the tub together in trunks. Also the tall guy looks at the little guy like he invented happiness." (read: she said "No but also yes and in this essay, I will...") and B. they don't bitch about sharing drinks with each other and they actually know what pegging is THANK GOD, HOW REFRESHING. lmfao.

What made me start writing Shyan fics: @tripwirealarm

Or actually maybe it was me coming to @tripwirealarm being like "hey what if we did this short little one shot fic featuring the phrase 'standing o' in reference to ghosts giving them a 'standing ovation' and standing o sounding like it could also mean 'standing orgasm,' something something double entendre, and it turned into Simple Math because one thing is for damn sure, @tripwirealarm and I can't do short form.

About Today and Your Love is a Waterfall :3

About Today is a shyan fic I started writing for someone and then never finished, but I am still committed to actually finishing it someday.

It takes place in an AU where that last BFU filming trip is really the last and there's no Watcher. So, instead of flying back from New York, Ryan and Shane take the train back across America, and realise their feelings somewhere in the flyover states.

Here's a bit:

The train sways and bumps, gently rocking the whole car. Ryan’s hand clenches around the armrest of his seat. “Relax,” Shane admonishes, “it’s like being on a boat, just move with it.”  “Easy for you to say,” Ryan mutters.  Shane huffs a laugh. “You’ll get used to it. See how you do walking on solid ground when we change trains in Chicago, or after we get off in Los Angeles. It always takes me a minute to adjust.”  “You said you’d done this trip before?”  “Yeah,” Shane replies, stretching his arms over his head. One shoulder joint cracks gratifyingly. “Cheaper to drive into New York maybe, or to fly, but I took the train a couple of times through university, just to try it.”  “Feels like something you’d do,” Ryan says. “An old-fashioned choice.”  “You saying I’m old, Bergara?”  “You said it first,” Ryan laughs.

Your Love is a Waterfall is a Moon Knight wip, from Layla's perspective. I have a lot of feelings about her, and what she went through and how the show doesn't really ever address any of them. Have an excerpt:

It’s the wedding in the Maldives that Layla remembers when she is served with divorce papers in her father’s house in Cairo. The process server hands her the envelope, makes a note on his clipboard to acknowledge her receipt of the papers, and leaves. Layla stands in the open doorway, hands shaking, knowing what she’s going to find inside the brown paper envelope before she even unseals it. He hasn’t answered the phone in three months. He hasn’t called. No one has heard from him since the last time he spoke to her, when he landed in Chicago, three months ago. She feels like a wire, wound tight in a pair of hands, ready to be used to choke the life out of something, out of someone. She clenches her jaw so hard she can feel her teeth creaking.  She turns, and slams the door behind her when she goes back into the house. Pitches the envelope as far as she can throw it. It lands somewhere down the hall, but she doesn’t see, because she’s bent at the waist, a scream erupting into the hands she has pressed over her mouth. It’s all she allows herself.
