Argh... so I've been reading in Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (SVSSS) fandom recently. And it's given me a new pet peeve about formatting and TTS. A bunch of the authors in that fandom are using black lens brackets to indicate the 'system' voice, 【like this】, because the original novels do, and, yeah... unfortunately that's not always compatible with TTS (definitely not with google's TTS engine, and testing with various other online TTS engines gives mixed results).

YUP! They get read aloud! Every. Single. Time. They. Appear. Open black lens bracket like this close black lens bracket.

Please resist using the novel's formatting and just use regular square brackets instead! Which do not get read aloud unless there's a space in a bad position, [ like this ]. If you want to be fancy, maybe use <tt>...</tt> formatting or a monospaced font such as courier to make it stand out more as something mechanical.

Which reminds me, another bad formatting choice I've bumped into multiple times (and I can't remember if I've mentioned this one before) is where authors use something <like this> to indicate things like speaking mind-to-mind, or that someone is speaking a foreign language (despite the actual text still being in English). Cool. Neat. Also not TTS compatible, unless you like repeatedly hearing less than and greater than mixed into the text. But guess what - there are already perfectly serviceable ‹single› and «double» angled quotation marks that could be used instead - and since they're recognized as actual quotation marks, they don't get read aloud! Shocking, I know.

Those angled quotation marks could also be another decent option for indication of things like the system voice, obviously.

REVIEW | "Skip and Loafer" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade

There’s the old joke: “How do you make God laugh? Tell Him your plans.” Poor Mitsumi Iwakura (Tomoyo Kurosawa) doesn’t realize this, as she has her entire life planned from start-to-finish. She wants to go to a great college, get into politics, retire and be the mayor of her hometown, and then have her ashes spilled into her favorite sea. But first, the country bumpkin needs to experience high school in the city, and Skip and Loafer doesn’t make it easy on the girl!

Based on the manga by Misaki Takamatsu, Skip and Loafer is Mitsumi’s journey towards her biggest goals and aspirations. But on her first day, she gets lost and feels the weight of the world on her shoulders. Thankfully, she’s not alone, as she quickly makes a friend in Sousuke Shima (Akinori Egoshi), who finds her on the verge of breaking down. With his help, the two get to school on time, with Mitsumi reciting her opening speech by memory to the amazement of every student watching.

Well, they were amazed, until the anxiety-filled newcomer loses her lunch all over a teacher. And now, Mitsumi is quickly realizing that her plans for a perfect high school life are all but gone. However, with the support of Sousuke, her aunt Nao-chan (Mitsuki Saiga), and even her childhood friend Fumino (Sumire Morohoshi), Mitsumi will take life by the horns and hopefully make something of herself in Tokyo. With every new person who enters her life, Mitsumi regains a bit more confidence in herself.

That’s not to say it’s now smooth sailing in Skip and Loafer. Mitsumi mucks up her class introduction due to a lack of sleep, and her goal to get into the student council her first year is rejected on a technicality. It’s a good thing that Sousuke is such a straight shooter with his words, as he finds a way to comfort Mitsumi in ways that are both blunt and helpful. But as the show goes on, it’s revealed that Sousuke has some baggage of his own, and it’s all tied to his child-acting past.

How was the buying process for a new computer? How did you decide which one to get?

Honestly I kinda didn't decide at all. I went onto this site's PC Builder thingy and just clicked one of the cheaper options. I was ignorant and scared of messing something up so I just left all the preset stuff as-is, except removing the graphics card because I already have one. I also kept everything as-is because I was gifted $1000 specifically to get a better computer and wanted to splurge for something good. If I cared more about saving money or if I knew what I was doing, I'd probably have swapped out more stuff. The specific parts I bought are these, but some of them were on sale so I got them for cheaper; I got them for $730, and they're now $800 at the time of writing.

The buying process was easy enough, just scary because it's the biggest purchase I've ever made. The building process was a pain in the butt, but looking up video tutorials and instruction manuals made sure I knew what I was doing. Overall, it took me 24 hours to finally get it fully working. Transferring the files over was slow, painful, and tedious, but that's mainly because of my old computer locking up whenever I tried to transfer too many files to an external drive. There's probably way easier ways to do it.

except it does also skip him into a living human version of himself too

so the quantum skipper seems to see no significant difference between human Rimmer and hologram Rimmer. They are equivalent enough to be interchangeable with each other.

and I think that’s a very small but important thing when considering how ‘real’ a Rimmer the hologram version is

After making my own UI override, I've been itching to look back in time and try to recreate The Sims 2 UI in TS4, and here it is!

I tried to capture the look & feel as best as possible, so I hope you can enjoy this mod and reminisce a bit c:

he’s stubborn, he’s adamant. you figure there isn’t much to argue about when you are head to head with sunghoon.

“it’s just a compatibility test,” you refresh the page, shaking your head as if to surrender.

he clicks his tongue. “and we are very compatible,”

sunghoon fell for you because you were a little mean to him over a project. your words were laced with exhaustion and a drive to achieve perfection. as for him, he had already found it in you.

you can smack his butt in front of the council and he would probably gaze at you longingly. he lets you play with his hair even if it means he has to redo it. you can document your entire day in his phone and post his silly pictures on your account and he would not bat an eye.

your parents don’t get along but he still asked you for a dance in the charity gala hosted by his family, and you had gladly given your hand to him even though it was half out of spite.

sunghoon truly thinks there is no one as compatible as the two of you, and would take it up with the heavens if he had to.

you enter your names on the website again, making sure to add just ‘hoon’ instead of his full name— he is sitting wide eyed and anxious as if this decides this entire life ahead.

well, for sunghoon, it probably does.

“are you sure you’re spelling our names correctly?” you scowl at his words but his expression is nothing like he is giving up. sunghoon would fight for you, even if it’s really not that serious at this moment. “let me try,”

and your boyfriend thinks something will change if he keeps trying. it has to— the two of you are a match made in heaven.

cruising amidst family rivalry and the good for nothing guys that try to get your attention, sunghoon’s love has found its way to your heart. he feels like a warrior, the luckiest person alive to be the one you had given your heart.

he is the happiest person alive to see his name next to yours. although right now, it’s everything that is stressing him out.

your head rests on his shoulder as he types your names with proper care before pressing ‘calculate’ and you click your tongue when you notice a small blunder. “it’s sunghoon and not seunghoon. you’re spelling your own name incorrectly,”

there’s a quiet pause while he goes over the letters, and then his eyes zoom in on the number.

his brows burrow and his heart skips a beat, not sure if it’s in dread or delight.

“yeah, but why is it ninety-eight percent compatible?” his eyelids squint at the screen, contemplating the biggest decision of his life. “should i change my name?”

and you slap his arm playfully while a huff falls off your lips. “don’t be silly,”

and with the slide of the door across the frame, his words are cut short. sunghoon watches the new student that walks right behind the teacher.

he listens, sees, jaw dropped and eyes blown open.

You hear the jingle of the front door as it swings open, and you glance up from the pie crust you’re crimping. It’s quiet this morning, the lull between the breakfast rush and the lunchtime coffee crowd—just the hum of your playlist and the smell of cinnamon-sugar in the air.

Then he walks in.

Tall, broad shoulders, worn leather jacket clinging to him like a second skin, and a face that screams, I’ve been through hell, but damn do I still look good doing it. He takes off his sunglasses, green eyes cutting through the warm light of your bakery, scanning the menu chalked behind you with laser focus.

You’re still staring when he says, “Tell me you’ve got pie.”

You blink. “Uh—plenty. Apple, cherry, pecan, and... I just finished a bourbon maple one about ten minutes ago.”

His eyes actually light up. “Did you say bourbon?”

“I did.”

He walks up to the counter like he’s approaching holy ground. “You must be an angel.”

You laugh under your breath. “Hardly.”

He leans forward, resting one forearm on the glass display case, and god help you, it’s like he knows exactly what he’s doing.

“I hope this pie is as sweet as you,” he says, straight-faced, voice low and gravelly.

You pause, arch a brow. “Did you just hit on me with a pie pun?”

“I did,” he grins, unapologetic. “And I regret nothing.”

You snort and grab a plate, cutting a slice of the bourbon maple and sliding it in front of him. “You’re lucky I like corny.”

He takes a bite—eyes flutter closed, a tiny, reverent groan slips out—and you swear you might have to sit down.

“This is…” he says around a mouthful, “…a religious experience. You single?”

Your heart skips. “Depends. You a serial killer?”

He chuckles, the sound warm and a little worn. “No, ma’am. I kill monsters.”

Your brow furrows. “Is that another pick-up line?”

“Not this time.”

And you don’t know why, but you believe him.

There’s something in his smile—sharp around the edges, but soft at the core—that feels like maybe this guy doesn’t get to enjoy things like pie and flirting with strangers very often. And here he is, indulging in both like he’s starved for it.

“I’m Dean, by the way.”

You offer your name with a little smile, wiping your hands on your apron before reaching out. He shakes it, warm and calloused and maybe a little hesitant.

“You’re gonna be seeing a lot more of me,” he says, already halfway through the slice. “For the pie, of course.”

“Of course,” you say, but the heat in your cheeks gives you away.

And you swear, when he leaves, he turns back just to look at you one more time—like he’s not sure what’s got him more hooked: the bourbon or the baker.
