Grishaverse head cannon. We know that as a kid Alina suppressed her powers when the Grisha testers came but from the way the testing was described it seems though the response isn't something you can control. We also know that Sun summoning and shadow summoning are slightly different than other Etherealki because even the most powerful of them, (Zoya) can't dig and replicate the powers like they can with other Grisha abilities. This leads me to believe two things. One Shadow summoners and sun summoners should not be considered Etherealki because there abilities don't exactly fit within that category and two both sun and shadow summoners are not as uncommon as they might seem but light/darkness based powers are just harder to access and control. I wonder if its possible that there were other sun/shadow summoners who never accessed their abilities or were never powerful enough for them to show.

Do you have any ideas/theories on what the ‘thisness’ vs ‘thatness’ mentioned in the first SaB book is? Or is it just one of those things we’ll never know because of the surface-level world building?
Some bullshit in pseudoRussian mentioned once to make it look like the author bothered with consistent, coherent worldbuilding?
The grounding principle of the Small Science was “like calls to like,” but then it got complicated. Odinakovost was the “thisness” of a thing that made it the same as everything else. Etovost was the “thatness” of a thing that made it different from everything else. Odinakovost connected Grisha to the world, but it was etovost that gave them an affinity for something like air, or blood, or in my case, light.
Shadow and Bone- Chapter 10
And that's literally EVERYTHING we get on these "basics" of Small Science. Ever.
Or not?!
“It is not too far,” she sneered. “You are as much there as you are here. The same things that make the mountain make you. It has no lungs, so let it breathe with you. It has no pulse, so give it your heartbeat. That is the essence of the Small Science.” She thumped me with her stick. “Stop huffing like a wild boar. Breathe the way I taught you—contained, even.” I felt my cheeks redden, and I slowed my breathing. Snippets of Grisha theory filled my head. Odinakovost. Thisness. Etovost. Thatness. It was all a muddle. But the words that came back to me most strongly were Morozova’s fevered scrawl: Are we not all things?
Ruin and Rising- Chapter 7
Sorry, that's just repetition of the terms, but nothing else. :(
If I understand it correctly, the first one is basically "Everything is made of particles.". Even if it's so, it's worded rather poorly.
The second one doesn't make much sense to me. Especially since whatever affinity's described, doesn't really matter if you have enough power to push through any differences. Besides we have no idea how do Grisha manipulate matter to begin with...
I miss my physics teachers.
I've also seen people point out the linguistic nonsense in these:
odin - one eto - this
That's like... the same thing?! There's no obvious difference between meanings. If you're referring to something as "the one", you're basically pointing a finger at it, saying "I'm talking about THIS!".

hot take: Darklina's kid wouldn't be a Sun OR Shadow Summoner...
this theory goes against the regular Grisha power "inheritance" rules (if you're Grisha, one of your parents was the same type as you), but I don't care, bc neither Alina nor Aleksander were really "normal". & that shit w/Zoya & Juris still makes me salty (no spoilers though), OP ugh.
ANYWAY--
imagine the Darklina kid having the power of gravity, kinetic energy, or merzost itself (w/o the harmful effects). let me explain.
gravity is unseen. stars are basically just balls of plasma held together by gravity & a lot of movements/phenomena we study concerning outer space is thanks to the gravitational pull of a star on other stuff. also, Aleks controls the unseen, in a way.
kinetic energy = movement in general. Gambit/Remy LeBeau from the X-Men (Marvel Comics) controls this, so he can make objects spontaneously combust OR slow things down. cue the ultimate form of Etherealki!!
merzost is, in short, forbidden magic that everyone finds unpredictable & costly. but Ilya Morozova had a pretty good handle on it. he was able to resurrect his daughter using it & his exposure to it altered his blood/DNA/whatever enough to give his descendants a new Grisha power (IDK why HE didn't become a Shadow Summoner). so a merzost Grisha might be an advanced Healer, able to completely resurrect & reconstitute people. maybe they could speak to spirits. tbh merzost is just witchy jurda parem.
I've seen lots of fics about the Reader being a "Star Summoner" or a "Moon Summoner"...if you use these ideas, please tag/credit me! I'd love to see your take on these--

The fandom has done more for the worldbuilding of this saga that the autor.
How magic (and logic) works in Grishaverse
LB: so, there is this very dangerous, very dark and very forbidden magic called merzost. It requires a great sacrifice and leads to devastating consequences! Readers: Okay... LB: The Darkling was experimenting with merzost and it backfired, creating the Shadow Fold! Readers: Okay, hold on. What kind of experiment? What was he trying to achieve? How did it backfire? That seems important for the story, and for the character's portrait. LB: Well, it was just your regular mustache-twirling evil experiment! He's evil and power-hungry, okay? Moving on. Alina also used merzost, and it turned her hair white! Readers: That's "devastating consequences"? A free hair dye job? LB: plot armour! I mean, mysterious evil magic. Anyway, in the end Alina uses the three Morozova amplifiers together and it results in her power being redistributed among a bunch of people! Readers: So, Ilya Morozova was so "obsessed" with creating those three amplifiers because he wanted some randos to get Grisha powers many centuries after his death? That was his great vision? Communal Sun Summoning? LB: Grisha normally manipulate one element, but can learn to manipulate others, because "we all are all things"! That's why fabrikator Ilya Morozova also had healing powers, and Genya's "unique" power ended up being learned by everybody and their mother! Readers: Then why didn't the Darkling learn to summon the sun centuries ago? Or at least picked up some other Grisha powers? If he's so "power hungry", having more abilities would be desirable for him? LB: Apparently, the correct way to use an amplifier is to let it kill you when you are killing it! That's why Zoya can transform into a dragon now! Readers: So if Alina let Mal stab her while stabbing him, she would be able to randomly turn into a crusty sexist tracker? LB: So Zoya turns into a dragon and Fjerdans fall to their knees, weep at the sight of this holy miracle, and become Grisha's best friends forever! Readers: Wait, don't Fjerdans consider Grisha powers monstrous? Dragon-shifting must be pretty high on the monstrosity scale. Do they have a special dragon clause in their holy scripture? "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live, for their power is sinful and unnatural, unless they can turn into a big, thick-scaled sky lizard, for those are sacred and pleasing to God?" LB: Shut up! Stop asking questions; just look how badass Zoya is!

Siege and Storm- Chapter 11 (Leigh Bardugo)
It's feeding on him, yet he doesn't hesitate to use it.
One of the things I just love about Alina, is her ability to act like an authority on every other topic she barely encountered. No words of doubt, no sign she's only repeating what she heard... No "I think" or "If I understand it correctly". One chapter she admits she doesn't get the basics, next she's professor emeritus.
She also ignores, or doesn't notice what is Nikolai truly asking. He isn't trying to understand mechanics of enemy's weapon to better fight it, he seems to believe he's against some world-destroyer that needs to be stopped. And you think that's what the Darkling is after? True creation?

Meet one of the planet’s smallest turtles: the bog turtle (Glyptemys muhlenbergii)! This petite reptile grows up to 4.5 in (11.4 cm) long. It’s easily identifiable by the orange patches on either side of its head.
The bog turtle has an impressive lifespan, with the oldest documented individual reaching an age of 61! Unfortunately, this species is critically endangered due in part to poaching and habitat loss as a result of human expansion.
