Job Chapter 18

Bildad the Shuhite is an Optimist

I think from now on, every single chapter will begin either with someone telling Job to shut up or Job telling his friends to shut up. And no one one ever shuts up. It's like that great Jack T. Chick meme with the one guy going "Shut up" to whatever Jesus says.

I almost shouldn't mention it, but Bildad definitely has a bit of a variation in that he's rather insulted that Job has been calling everyone stupid. And that's fair. Like these are Job's friends. They came to comfort him. They sat shiva with him. They let him talk. Then they made the mistake of trying to tell him comforting lies and now they are all in an endless argument.

"Give me three friends to argue with and I have a reason for living" said a college professor that I admired when I took his class (less so when I followed him on social media).

So what is Bildad's theme? Same as Eliphaz with the wicked becoming ensnared and eventually being hoisted on his own petard. The weird thing is that Job doesn't have a problem with the wicked seeming to get away with it. So are they still calling Job wicked? Is that the implication.

Actually, let's pretend that Bildad isn't really listening to Job. That seems more accurate. It's like Bildad heard Eliphaz speak, agreed with him heartily and then just ignored everything that Job said.

For a work of fiction, this is the most realistic book of the Bible (if you accept this interpretation).

So Bildad gives us the image of the wicked as the one who gets trapped in ropes and snares, with traps seizing his heels and nooses tightening on him. Verse 13 gives us "The tendons under his skin are consumed; Death's first born consumes his tendons". Damn, those tendons are fucked.

Not only is the wicked trapped and then abused, the whole thing leads him to the king and he faces his justice. Then he's forgotten. Only he's also not forgotten. He's driven into darkness and yet, generations are appalled by his fate.

Don't forget to blot out the name of Haman.

So that's it. The wicked are going to get fucked and God is in charge. Are you happy, Job??? It's all going to work out or at least it's going to work out to fuck with the wicked? Oh sure Job, you're suffering but isn't it nice to know that Trump and Falwell will also suffer just like you?
