There are a lot of things that I would have liked to get more attention but most of all I wanna know about the crows' lives before shit went down, like the little details that don't really matter in the long run. Obviously we know quite a lot about Inej and Kaz but there are aspects of their lives that we don't know and also: what about the other crows? How was Wylan's relationship with his father befor Van Dick found out he can't read? How did Jesper manage to get into Ketterdam University and what was he studying? What about Matthias's and Nina's childhoods before the shipwreck? How did Inej experience girl hood before it was taken from her? Did Kaz help around the farm when he was little? I could go on and on about this but you get the idea

16. You have opened Padora's box with this one, love. I have several hills I would climb and die on gladly, but I would pick the one that truly makes me mad: Jesper is a great character that is more than the loveable comic relief. I mean my guy got into Ketterdam University and we are told this is a rich-ass institution that you have to be really good to get into and Jesper just did it. His chapters are dumbed down to his jokes by the fandom and everyone glimpses over the internal turmoil he has: when he sees the "trophies" that the Fjerdans keep from fallen Grisha, when he is outted as a Grisha to everyone, when he talks about his infatuation with Kaz. Jesper is as well rounded as all the others and some ppl need to understand that. I also think the same about Matthias (how he is more than Nina's love interess) and Wylan (about how he's not the baby that the fandom makes him out to be), but I think I will make a separate post on those two.

25. What I like most about the duology are the characters. Like they're all interesting and fun to read about on their own and as a group. I love the complex relationships everyone has and that they all have a goal that they want to achieve outside of the main heist. They all experience the same things/similar things but have varied responses (ex: when Inej was kidnapped) and that makes them feel more like actual ppl than book characters. One thing I wasn't so fond of however was probably the Jesper-Wylan-Kuwei situation but I think that just because I am an avid hater of love triangles that don't end in polyamory so, yeah. I'm not too mad about that but it still irks me.

26. There were a lot of points in the books that caught me off guard when I first read them but the one that shocked me the most was – prepare for a Basic bitch answer – "He was just Wylan. He told them everything". I know most of the fandom will say this but honestly that's for a good reason, I had to phisically put the book down and beat my fist into my bed when I read that and that doesn't happen very often for me. I was ready to defend Wylan till I died at that moment.

3. Were you immediately pulled in or did it take you a minute to get into the story?

I actually had a really hard time starting! I noped out of the first chapter several times when I had borrowed the book from the library, and ended up returning it unread. I felt like it didn't really get going until they got to Hellgate, and I think if I were to do a rewrite I would maybe start at the Hellshow and do the rest of the exposition through Matthais POV as an outsider character.

25. What do you like most about the duology? Anything you aren't particularly fond of?

I think we can all agree that the characters are what makes the story special. That they're all distinct, and interesting, and complex and grab you in their own ways. I felt connected to each of them in their own ways, and was happy to spend time with them. The book gave me that special kind of "I miss my friends" hangover when it was over, and that is a really kind of sacred feeling that I don't get a lot.

All that said, I am not a huge fan of the Nina/Matthias relationship. Someone once described her as a Jewish girl who fell for a Nazi and I have had that burned into my brain since. Like yeah, they're teenagers who were both made into child soldiers and have had to do terrible things that aren't their fault. But I don't feel like the text dealt with it enough to get me to buy into their relationship. This is part of the reason they haven't shown up much in my writing, I just can't find a way to get into them.

When the World Professional Association for Transgender Health’s Standards of Care Version 8 was released in September 2022, a very strange thing happened: WPATH removed references to minimum age requirements for various medical interventions, describing the change as a “correction” in a notice that now reads, weirdly: “This correction notice has been removed as it referred to a previous version of the article, which was published in error.” Whatever happened, exactly, it’s clear that until late in the game the document did have age minimums until, suddenly, it did not.

The SoC 8 was supposed to have been created via something called the Delphi process. As the document itself explains: “Consensus on the final recommendations was attained using the Delphi process that included all members of the guidelines committee and required that recommendation statements were approved by at least 75% of members.” Suffice it to say that making a sudden, major change so late in the game calls into question whether that process was fully adhered to.

Thanks to a rather remarkable document just unsealed as part of Boe v. Marshall, one of the many American lawsuits over youth gender medicine, we now have a potential explanation for why the age guidelines were removed: direct pressure from assistant secretary for health of the Department of Health and Human Services Admiral Rachel Levine (who is a trans woman herself) and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The document is titled “Appendix A To Supplemental Expert Report Of James Cantor, Ph.D. In it Cantor, a Canadian sex researcher, critic of youth gender medicine, and frequent expert witness on behalf of those attempting to ban or restrict it (including in this case), claims that “Assistant Secretary for Health Dr. Rachel Levine strongly pressured WPATH leadership to rush the development and issuance of SOC-8, in order to assist with Administration political strategy.”

He backs this claim up with the following internal communications from WPATH members involved with the creation of the SoC 8 (here and elsewhere in the document, the names of the people who wrote the words in question are redacted):

I have just spoken to Admiral Levine today, who—as always is extremely supportive of the SOC 8, but also very eager for its release—so to ensure integration in the US health policies of the Biden government. So, let’s crack on with the job!!! 

I am meeting with Rachel Levine and her team next week, as the US Department of Health is very keen to bring the trans health agenda forward.

The failure of WPATH to be ready with SOC 8 is proving a barrier to optimal policy progress and she [Dr. Levine] was eager to learn when SOC 8 might be published. 

[T]his should be taken as a charge from the United States government to do what is required to complete the project immediately. 

More worryingly, Cantor charges that “Assistant Secretary Levine also attempted to and did influence the substantive content of SOC-8, based on political goals rather than science. Specifically, Assistant Secretary Levine, though [sic] a staff member, pressured WPATH to remove recommended minimum ages for medical transition treatments from SOC-8.”

Here, too, he has evidence from anonymized emails written by those involved in the SoC 8:

Sarah Boateng, who is Adm. Levine’s chief of staff [said the] biggest concern is the section below in the Adolescent Chapter that lists specific minimum ages for treatment, she is confident, based on the rhetoric she is hearing in DC, and from what we have already seen, that these specific listings of ages, under 18, will result in devastating legislation for trans care. She wonders if the specific ages can be taken out and perhaps an adjunct document could be created that is published or distributed in a way that is less visible than the SOC8, is the way to go. 

The issue of ages and treatment has been quite controversial (mainly for surgery) and it has come up again. We sent the document to Admiral Levine. . . She like [sic] the SOC-8 very much but she was very concerned that having ages (mainly for surgery) will affect access to health care for trans youth and maybe adults too. Apparently the situation in the USA is terrible and she and the Biden administration worried that having ages in the document will make matters worse. She asked us to remove them. We have the WPATH executive committee in this meeting and we explained to her that we could not just remove them at this stage. 

[W]e heard your [Dr. Levine’s] comments regarding the minimal age criteria for transgender healthcare adolescents; the potential negative outcome of these minimal ages as recommendations in the US [. . . ] Consequently, we have changes to the SOC 8 in this respect. Given that the recommendations for minimal ages for the various gender affirming medical and surgical intervention are consensus-based, we could not remove them from the document. Therefore, we have made changes as to how the minimal ages are presented in the documents. [Note: “your” may well refer to an aide of Levine’s rather than the Secretary herself, though it’s unclear.] 

Cantor also includes emails from SoC 8 contributors expressing surprise at the sudden change, including this one making. . . well, the same point everyone else made after news of the late-stage “correction” broke:

I don’t see how we can simply remove something that important from the document—without going through a Delphi—at this final stage of the game [. . . ] I realize that those in favor of the bans are going to go right to the age criteria and ignore the fact that we actually strengthened the strictness of the criteria to help clinicians better discern appropriate surgical candidates from those who are inappropriate [. . . ] It’s all about messaging and marketing. 

I’m actually crashing on a different but related freelance story at the moment. Check out Leor Sapir’s Twitter timeline for more details about this and another just-unsealed document. Next week, when I’ve caught my breath, I’ll write a little bit more about this as well as yet another damning claim Cantor makes, that the American Academy of Pediatrics “issued an ultimatum to WPATH: Should WPATH not delete the age minimums, AAP would not only withhold endorsement of SOC-8, but would publicly oppose the document.” 

But I wanted to at least get this short piece up, because the Levine angle is important and alarming. It demonstrates an indisputable conflict between how WPATH has portrayed the SoC 8 — as a document steeped in evidence and careful deliberation on the part of experts — and how the guidelines were actually formulated.

AU: Flynn wanted to steal the princess' crown, he never planned for the Princess herself to tag along. One thing is for certain; no one messes with Flynn Rider and he wasn't going to let this girl start now. He had to find a way to get rid of her, and losing his heart along the way wasn’t an option. Or alternately; what happens when Rapunzel was never kidnapped by Gothel and was instead raised a princess who accidentally ends up entangled with the infamous Flynn Rider?

Part 2. Apricity I Chapters 1/? I

The truth behind a happily ever after is that happiness cannot truly last forever, but Eugene is determined to find the miracle within the life he’s been granted beside Rapunzel. If the stars aligned long enough to tie their destinies together, he won’t give up that easily, even if fate itself keeps testing the bonds of their love. Some things are well worth the sacrifice. Or: Rapunzel and Eugene struggle to adjust to their new royal life in Corona’s Palace. They will soon find out things only get more complicated with a baby on the way.

Fully fleshing out so many Original Characters that I am excited to write spin off stories for them in the future. Rook & Jeter especially!

9. How do you find new fic to read?

Aside from searching ships, its the people who leave Kudos, Comments, and Bookmarks. I go and look at what else they're writing, reading and bookmarking. It helps me find so many other talented folks, AND makes me feel like I am in really amazing company.

10. How do you decide what to write?

Random bursts of inspiration, thinking through how I think the characters would handle a piece of trauma or a particular emotion, and sometimes, they just grab me and say, WRITE THIS THING. Sometimes the banter comes fully formed into my head in the shower. Sometimes, I wake up at 4 am and do a voice to text email to myself with an idea I just dreamt of. I just keep writing all the ideas down, and then fleshing them out.

11. Are you partial to a certain character/pairing or are you more equal-opportunity? If you are partial to any character/pairing, why do you think that is?

19. If you wrote a spin-off of [insert fic], what would it involve?

30. Have you ever written something that was out of your comfort zone? If so, what was it, and how did it affect your approach to writing fic thereafter?

Yes. When I first sat to write Intermezzo, I knew writing about their unhappy moments would be a challenge. It turned out to be a very worthwhile endeavor, and encouraged me to explore more angst and processing of negative emotions. I have legitimately targeted more problematic and stressful plot lines since, because I found it fulfilling to explore them. It's certainly harder for me to write angst than smut, but there's a pay off there.

34. What aspects of your writing are inspired by/taken from your real life?

Trauma, and working through it. Erotica and kink scenes. Stupidly funny banter between partners. Goofy hijinx. Ridiculous pillow talk. Arguments that turn into healthy discussions. Physical affection being craved but occasionally difficult.

35. What aspects of your writing are completely unlike your real life?

Being a pirate captain or a gang leader.

36. Do you visualize what you read/write?

SO MUCH. I am a visual thinker. I will picture positions and body language and figure out if situations are feasible, etc. I even go so far as to do 3D renders of floor plans.

38. Did any of your fics get surprisingly popular (whatever that means to you)? Which ones? Why do you think they were so successful?

It makes me really happy that so many people like Intermezzo. It was the first not-smut I wrote, exploring heavy themes, and it resonates with people. When a therapist friend read it, and told me that I had handled their trauma in an informed way, it made my whole week.

40. Do you tend to reread fics or are you a one-and-done kind of person?

I totally go back and re-read fics, books, stories, and more. It's like comfort food.

Lore building and more intricate plot lines.

46. Do you prefer writing on your phone or on a computer (or something else)? Do you think where you write affects the way you write?

I far prefer at my desktop with a real size keyboard. I have made edits and added text from laptop, phone, and tablet when the muse hits, but a real keyboard is just so much easier. And it makes the satisfying CLICKY CLICKY.

The amount of amazing writers and artists in the Grishaverse and SoC fandom never ceases to please me. I have been a part of so many fandoms and subcultures over the years, and I adore the community I have found here, from authors and artists to new fans. Writing Journal 5/13/25 Audio Updates

Okay! I'm Excited!

So, just started the new semester and it is looking Intense but (for right now at least) I have time to start working on getting audio versions of some of my fics up and posted!

Today, my goal is to get the first five chapters of You Can Always Fall Lower recorded, edited, and ready to upload. All five chapters will be in the same recording so there should be three separate recordings. I'll post another update if I end up not liking that format. I will be recording chapters between doing my readings for class so it may be A Minute before the new audio version is polished and fully uploaded but it will be coming!

Also, I am only planning on doing these audio recordings for my SOC and Maybe my SaSi and original works fics. i am not currently planning to do audio versions of my arcane fics cause those characters have Canon Voices and I! Am not great! At doing any accents that aren't variations of my own.

Finally, if anyone sees this before listening to the recordings. I am doing this shit season one TMA style on a voice recorder surrounded by pillows. I do not have access to like a Good Set Up I am just doing this for fun and accessibility purposes its gonna sound Bad and we're all gonna have to be okay about that
