One of the most defining 16bit computers was introduced in June 1985.
ATARI ST 520
DESIGN HISTORY & STRATEGY
The Atari ST series was born in a turbulent time: Atari had just been acquired by Jack Tramiel, founder of Commodore, after leaving that company. Tramiel pushed for a quick-to-market product to compete with the Apple Macintosh and Commodore Amiga.
Development time: Less than one year — an aggressive schedule for a 16-bit GUI-based machine.
Initial models: The Atari 520ST was the first to ship, showcased at CES in 1985.
Innovative design: All-in-one casing (mainboard + keyboard), like the Amiga 500, but with better modularity (external floppy drive, monitor, etc.).
Former C=64 developer Shiraz Shivji led the design team. He tells a story about the Atari ST/Commodore Amiga history (source) "It is very interesting that the Warner Atari difficulties were due to Tramiel’s Commodore. The Commodore 64 was much more successful (I would say wildly successful) compared to the Atari Computers such as the 800 and the 400. We were also taking away sales from the video games division, the Atari 2600. Jay Miner was at Atari in the old days and was involved in the design of their products. He left Atari to design the Amiga. Atari had funded some of this effort and had an option to buy the Amiga. When we took over Atari in July 1984, the first order of business was to decide what to do with this option. The problem was that the Amiga was not quite ready and would need a lot of money to acquire. We decided to pass on Amiga, but this put enormous pressure on our own development team. Commodore, on the other hand, did not have an internally developed 32-bit graphics-oriented machine and did not have the confidence to develop the machine internally. They ended up buying Amiga for between $25-$30 million and spent a further $20 million or so and yet came out with a product a little after Atari. The roles were reversed, the Atari ST has a Commodore pedigree, while the Amiga has an Atari pedigree!"
MIDI AND MUSIC PRODUCTION
The 520ST included built-in MIDI ports — a revolutionary move. At the time, most other computers needed expensive third-party MIDI interfaces.
Key Software:
Steinberg Cubase – became the industry standard for MIDI sequencing.
Notator – early version of what later evolved into Logic Pro.
Pro 24, Dr. T's, and Hollis Trackman – widely used for composing, sequencing, and syncing synthesizers.
Used by Artists:
Fatboy Slim composed with the ST well into the 2000s.
Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis, The Chemical Brothers, and Underworld used it in studio setups.
Many studios kept an Atari ST just for MIDI due to its tight timing and reliability.
SOFTWARE ECOSYSTEM
TOS/GEM: A fast and responsive GUI OS that was very usable on 512KB of RAM.
Productivity apps:
Calamus DTP – high-quality desktop publishing
NeoDesk – an improved desktop GUI
GFA Basic – a powerful programming environment
Graphics tools:
Degas Elite, NeoChrome – pixel art, animation
Spectrum 512 – used clever tricks to display 512 colors
While the Amiga had better graphics and sound, many games were first developed for the ST, then ported to Amiga. Key games:
Dungeon Master – first-person RPG with real-time mechanics
Carrier Command, Starglider, Blood Money, Rick Dangerous
Flight simulators, strategy, and adventure games flourished
CULTURAL IMPACT
In Europe (especially the UK, Germany, France, and Hungary):
The ST became a cornerstone of bedroom coding, Demoscene, and music production.
Local software houses and users created a vibrant community around the machine.
The Atari ST was used in schools, small studios, and households well into the early '90s.
In education: The ST's affordability and easy-to-use software made it a favorite in European schools and computer labs.
DECLINE & LEGACY
By the early 1990s, the ST line was losing ground to IBM-compatible PCs and faster Amigas.
Later models like the STE, TT030, and Falcon 030 tried to revitalize the line, with limited success.
Atari shifted toward consoles (like the Jaguar) and left the computer market.
Long-term legacy:
The Atari ST's MIDI legacy lives on — it helped standardize digital music production workflows.
Many musicians and retrocomputing fans still collect and use STs today.
A vibrant retro software/demo scene remains active, especially in Europe.

Global Protest Day: Stand Against Germany’s Racist Deportation Policies and Its Crackdown on Palestine Solidarity
Date: 12th of April 2025
On Saturday the 12th of April, we call on people worldwide to unite in a Global Protest Day against Germany’s escalating repression of Palestine solidarity and its racist deportation policies targeting marginalized communities.
After deporting four Gazan comrades in February, Germany now wants to deport three EU citizens and one US citizen for their involvement in the pro-Palestine movement. Germany’s crackdown on Palestinians and Palestine solidarity activists, as well as its aggressive deportation practices, is part of a broader attempt to silence dissent and violate the basic rights of refugees, migrants, and activists.
This is a critical moment to stand together and demand justice for all those facing deportation and repression in Germany.
What you can do:
Organize protests at German embassies, consulates, or local institutions. Take to the streets and make your voice heard! If you are in Berlin/Brandenburg join the protest at Leopoldplatz in Wedding at 2pm
Speak out against ALL DEPORTATIONS! Let Germany know that the world will not stand by while it kills, abducts and deports illegalized people.
Target German border profiteers - Call out, boycott and disrupt German companies that profit from deportations, from airline companies to surveillance software developers and prison construction companies.
Amplify voices and actions on social media—#BoycottGermany, #Stopdeportationsingermany #AbolishFrontex, #NoHumanIsIllegal, #FortressEurope, #ThisPactKills
This Global Protest Day is a call to people everywhere—no matter where you are, your solidarity matters. This is a global movement and we are all connected – Let's stand in internationalist solidarity with one another against repression, stand for a free Palestine, stand for freedom of movement for everyone! Dismantle the deportation machine everywhere!
Together, we can make a difference. Let’s take to the streets, raise our voices, and demand freedom and justice for all.
ALL OUT ON APRIL 12th!

CNC development history and processing principles
Tumblr media
CNC machine tools are also called Computerized Numerical Control (CNC for short). They are mechatronics products that use digital information to control machine tools. They record the relative position between the tool and the workpiece, the start and stop of the machine tool, the spindle speed change, the workpiece loosening and clamping, the tool selection, the start and stop of the cooling pump and other operations and sequence actions on the control medium with digital codes, and then send the digital information to the CNC device or computer, which will decode and calculate, issue instructions to control the machine tool servo system or other actuators, so that the machine tool can process the required workpiece.
Tumblr media
‌1. The evolution of CNC technology: from mechanical gears to digital codes
The Beginning of Mechanical Control (late 19th century - 1940s)
The prototype of CNC technology can be traced back to the invention of mechanical automatic machine tools in the 19th century. In 1887, the cam-controlled lathe invented by American engineer Herman realized "programmed" processing for the first time by rotating cams to drive tool movement. Although this mechanical programming method is inefficient, it provides a key idea for subsequent CNC technology. During World War II, the surge in demand for military equipment accelerated the innovation of processing technology, but the processing capacity of traditional machine tools for complex parts had reached a bottleneck.
The electronic revolution (1950s-1970s)
After World War II, manufacturing industries mostly relied on manual operations. After workers understood the drawings, they manually operated machine tools to process parts. This way of producing products was costly, inefficient, and the quality was not guaranteed. In 1952, John Parsons' team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) developed the world's first CNC milling machine, which input instructions through punched paper tape, marking the official birth of CNC technology. The core breakthrough of this stage was "digital signals replacing mechanical transmission" - servo motors replaced gears and connecting rods, and code instructions replaced manual adjustments. In the 1960s, the popularity of integrated circuits reduced the size and cost of CNC systems. Japanese companies such as Fanuc launched commercial CNC equipment, and the automotive and aviation industries took the lead in introducing CNC production lines.
Integration of computer technology (1980s-2000s)
With the maturity of microprocessor and graphical interface technology, CNC entered the PC control era. In 1982, Siemens of Germany launched the first microprocessor-based CNC system Sinumerik 800, whose programming efficiency was 100 times higher than that of paper tape. The integration of CAD (computer-aided design) and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software allows engineers to directly convert 3D models into machining codes, and the machining accuracy of complex surfaces reaches the micron level. During this period, equipment such as five-axis linkage machining centers came into being, promoting the rapid development of mold manufacturing and medical device industries.
Intelligence and networking (21st century to present)
The Internet of Things and artificial intelligence technologies have given CNC machine tools new vitality. Modern CNC systems use sensors to monitor parameters such as cutting force and temperature in real time, and use machine learning to optimize processing paths. For example, the iSMART Factory solution of Japan's Mazak Company achieves intelligent scheduling of hundreds of machine tools through cloud collaboration. In 2023, the global CNC machine tool market size has exceeded US$80 billion, and China has become the largest manufacturing country with a production share of 31%.
2. CNC machining principles: How code drives steel
The essence of CNC technology is to convert the physical machining process into a control closed loop of digital signals. Its operation logic can be divided into three stages:
Geometric Modeling and Programming
After building a 3D model using CAD software such as UG and SolidWorks, CAM software “deconstructs” the model: automatically calculating parameters such as tool path, feed rate, spindle speed, and generating G code (such as G01 X100 Y200 F500 for linear interpolation to coordinates (100,200) and feed rate 500mm/min). Modern software can even simulate the material removal process and predict machining errors.
Numerical control system analysis and implementation
The "brain" of CNC machine tools - the numerical control system (such as Fanuc 30i, Siemens 840D) converts G codes into electrical pulse signals. Taking a three-axis milling machine as an example, the servo motors of the X/Y/Z axes receive pulse commands and convert rotary motion into linear displacement through ball screws, with a positioning accuracy of up to ±0.002mm. The closed-loop control system uses a grating ruler to feedback position errors in real time, forming a dynamic correction mechanism.
Multi-physics collaborative control
During the machining process, the machine tool needs to coordinate multiple parameters synchronously: the spindle motor drives the tool to rotate at a high speed of 20,000 rpm, the cooling system sprays atomized cutting fluid to reduce the temperature, and the tool changing robot completes the tool change within 0.5 seconds. For example, when machining titanium alloy blades, the system needs to dynamically adjust the cutting depth according to the hardness of the material to avoid tool chipping.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
‌3. The future of CNC technology: cross-dimensional breakthroughs and industrial transformation
Currently, CNC technology is facing three major trends:
‌Combined‌: Turning and milling machine tools can complete turning, milling, grinding and other processes on one device, reducing clamping time by 90%;
Additive-subtractive integration: Germany's DMG MORI's LASERTEC series machine tools combine 3D printing and CNC finishing to directly manufacture aerospace engine combustion chambers;
‌Digital Twin‌: By using a virtual machine tool to simulate the actual machining process, China's Shenyang Machine Tool's i5 system has increased debugging efficiency by 70%.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the meshing of mechanical gears to the flow of digital signals, CNC technology has rewritten the underlying logic of the manufacturing industry in 70 years. It is not only an upgrade of machine tools, but also a leap in the ability of humans to transform abstract thinking into physical entities. In the new track of intelligent manufacturing, CNC technology will continue to break through the limits of materials, precision and efficiency, and write a new chapter for industrial civilization.

Sinneslochen was a West German software company made up of immigrants and refugees from East Germany and other Eastern Bloc states does not exist and never existed.
Sinneslochen primarily did outsource labor for larger European and American companies in the late 1970s and early 1980s, much of which involved German versions of office software and bugchecking/fixing was part of an elaborate hoax made by Kurt Koller, owner of the arcade game archiving website coinop.org.
Polybius was Sinneslochen's first video game, utilizing the profits generated from their outsourced work to make a puzzle-action "thinking game" game featuring an advanced hardware suite, simulating vector graphics on a raster display, allowing for increased backgrounds. The game was directed by Dr. Ygor Euspanese, a Ukrainian computer scientist. was a viral hoax created in the early 2000s, describing an early 1980s video game that supposedly caused headaches and other negative side affects in players, and was watched by US federal agents, before disappearing entirely.
Polybius was sent to several test markets in the USA, especially in the Pacific Northwest. Those who played the game near universally reported headaches and difficulty focusing for hours afterwards, with some players who got farther into the game reporting extremely disturbing "nightmares", seizures, and even limited precognition for a period of time. Reportedly, gameplay sessions and machines were monitored by NSA and DIA agents, with some players who made several levels into the game being interviewed by said agents and never returning. never existed. It was a hoax created by Kurt Koller to increase traffic to coinop.org, gaining popularity after appearing in an issue of Game Informer magazine.
Ygor Euspanese, PhD, emigrated to the United States following the test release and subsequent abandonment of Polybius, along with several Sinneslochen programmers. Several former Sinneslochen employees testify that Dr. Euspanese insisted on creating the game, pressuring the other staff of Sinneslochen to abandon other projects and engage in the game fully. They state that Dr. Euspanese had an almost manic obsession with the idea of ESP and "psychic abilities", and made the game in an effort to unlock the "psychic potential" of players. Nearly all of Sinneslochen's capital was spent on creating approximately 15 test cabinets, and with no ability to find a publisher and the departure of Euspanese and other programming staff, Sinneslochen was forced to dissolve in early 1982. The whereabouts of Euspanese after arriving in the US are currently unknown, though it is rumored he and his staff have been working on several US Government black projects is an anagram of Rogue Synapse, an amateur game developer who has a passion for making fan recreations of games that have appeared in popular movies and other media. He made a fangame of Polybius in the early 2010s. It is also the name of a very minor poster on tumblr, with several unoriginal ideas.
Polybius is highly sought after by arcade enthusiast and several local police authorities, as it is supposedly linked to several unexplained phenomena and cold cases throughout the United States. It is widely believed, however, that every copy of Polybius was either sent back to Germany and destroyed, or seized by the US Federal Government and are kept in unknown location(s). does not exist, and never existed, except as a story, and in that form, it always will exist.

Tag game!
I was tagged by @santacoppelia . Muchas gracias!
So, here we go...
1. Were you named after anyone? My grandpa on my mother's side. Died far too early. Sadly I never got to meet him.
2. When was the last time you cried? I tear up A LOT. Sad things. Beautiful things. A sunset. It's pathetic but I wouldn't count that as crying. Last time I really cried, was 9 years ago, when my Dad died.
3. Do you have kids? Nope. I guess that ship's sailed. I'm a passionate uncle of 5 and for some reason kids adore me. Guess it's because I turn full out into Goofy mode once some are around...
4. What sports do you play / have you played? Played table tennis for 15 years in a team on low regional level. But stopped long ago, when I moved away and started to work. Never picked it up again. Now I just watch Soccer from time to time.
5. Do you use sarcasm? Sometimes more often than I'd like. Can irritate people that don't know me well enough. That's why I try to be more careful with it.
6. What's the first thing you notice about people? I think I have pretty good antennas for general moods and micro gestures. Generally I m always first drawn to the eyes...windows to the soul. Always trying to read people...it's a gift and a curse sometimes.

8. Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings. I watch scary movies mostly in company, almost never on my own.
9. Any talents? Don't know. Not really. Others should answer that. My self esteem is not too high when it comes to such a question. When the situation allows it, I make a pretty good clown. Not to put myself in the center of things. More when I feel a party needs some loosening up or someone needs desperately to be cheered up.
10. Where were you born? Southwest part of Germany, near the border to Switzerland and the Black Forest.
11. What are your hobbies? Reading. Going to the movies old school in a theater. Taking pictures on long walks of everything that catches my eye. Have a thing for sunsets.
12. Do you have any pets? No. Had birds for quite some time. Now I'm just part-time Dad to my Mom's dachshund and spoiling the cats in my neighborhood.
13. How tall are you? 1.78m or 5'10
14. Favorite subject in school? Arts (drawing), English and History.
15. Dream job? Always wanted to teach. Became a software developer though. However, in the meantime I'm responsible for our apprentice program, so made it to teaching after all, to a certain degree at least.

X has banned the account of a prominent critic after he published data that he claims exposed the site’s embrace of the far-right after Elon Musk’s takeover last year.
Travis Brown, a software developer based in Berlin, alleges his account was first suspended on July 1 this year, several months after his data formed the basis of New York Times and CNN reports claiming that far-right influencers featured prominently among Twitter Blue subscribers, and how thousands of previously banned X accounts, including members of the far-right, were being reinstated on the site.
On Tuesday, Brown announced his decision to challenge his account’s suspension in court in Berlin. “This is a matter of principle,” he says. “I think it is important that platforms like Twitter are not allowed to shut down criticism arbitrarily.” X did not reply to repeated requests for comment.
X has been accused of attempting to silence its critics several times since Elon Musk acquired the platform in October 2022. In July, X sued the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) after the nonprofit published research suggesting that problematic content on the platform, such as hate and disinformation, was becoming more widespread. In December 2022, X suspended the account ElonJet, which tracked the movement of Musk’s private jet.
“Elon Musk likes to pretend he cares about free speech, but this case exposes that commitment as little more than window dressing,” claims Tiemo Wölken, a German politician who represents the Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament. “Someone who silences critics and researchers by kicking them off their platform isn’t a free speech advocate.”
Brown says he worked for X for one year, leaving in 2015 when his team was shut down. In 2022, he received a grant from the Open Knowledge Foundation, a nonprofit, to build software that would enable him to trace the history of accounts engaging in disinformation and hate speech. That tool, which focused on the company then known as Twitter, enabled him to identify which social media accounts posting about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had a history of posting spam. But it also meant he could identify, almost in real time, which previously banned accounts were being reinstated on X, he says.
“After Musk took over, you did see a very strong turn toward the far right, in terms of which accounts were being amplified, which accounts were building followings more quickly,” he claims.
Brown received no warning before his account was initially banned in July, the developer says. He says his account was restored in September, after a court order. But later that same month, Twitter informed Brown that his account would be banned again, with X justifying its decision to the court in a 36-page letter. X argued that Brown was using the platform’s data in a way that violated its terms of service. A similar argument was used in the case against the CCDH. X’s terms of service were updated in September 2023 to prohibit crawling or scraping in any form.
According to Brown, he has developed many small applications that draw on different data sources and are used by different researchers. But the tool he used to trace the history of X accounts relied on data from the Internet Archive, as well as data gathered from X’s API, he says, adding that this was done in a way he believed to be in compliance with the developer agreement at the time.
“What is at stake here is the freedom of researchers on social media platforms,” says Josephine Ballon, spokesperson for HateAid, a German nonprofit that campaigns against online hate speech and is helping Brown with his case. “Travis did not even publish this information on his own. He only contributed to press publications.”
The legal proceedings in Germany are ongoing. For Ballon, the best case scenario would be if the court reinstates Brown’s account again or rules the block to be unlawful. The worst outcome would be if the court declines to rule on the case because X’s European Union headquarters are based in Ireland. HateAid is asking the European Commission to intervene using the Digital Services Act, a new rulebook that went into effect in August and is designed to protect freedom of expression online.
“Even if we lose it, I think this case really shows how a huge social media company is going after a single person with really expensive lawyers and hundreds of pages of written documents,” says Ballon. “That really shows how aggressively they are behaving toward their critics.”

A Comprehensive Guide to Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) for Businesses
In today's digital landscape, a blockchain app development company plays a crucial role in transforming industries with decentralisation, immutability, and transparency. However, building and managing a private blockchain network can be complex and costly, which deters many businesses. Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) simplifies this by allowing businesses to leverage blockchain without the challenges of infrastructure development.
This comprehensive blog covers the hurdles businesses face when adopting blockchain, how BaaS can bridge these gaps, and why it is a game-changer for various sectors.
I. Challenges for Businesses in Blockchain Adoption
Despite the undeniable potential of blockchain technology, businesses face several significant challenges when contemplating its adoption:
Limited Internal Expertise: Developing and maintaining a private blockchain network requires a skilled team with deep blockchain knowledge, which is often lacking in many organisations.
High Cost: The infrastructure investment and ongoing maintenance fees associated with blockchain can strain budgets, especially for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).
Integration Complexities: Integrating a blockchain network with existing enterprise systems can be challenging, requiring seamless data flow and compatibility between the blockchain system and legacy infrastructure.
II. Understanding BaaS and Its Operational Fundamentals

Key Components of BaaS
Cloud-Based Infrastructure: Ready-to-use blockchain infrastructure hosted in the cloud, eliminating the need for businesses to set up and maintain their networks.
Development Tools and APIs: Access to a suite of tools and APIs to create and deploy blockchain applications quickly.
Platform Support: Compatibility with various blockchain protocols such as Ethereum, Hyperledger Fabric, and Corda, offering flexibility to businesses.
Managed Service Model: Providers handle tasks like network maintenance, security updates, and scalability.

III. Business Benefits of Blockchain as a Service
Adopting BaaS offers numerous advantages, including:
Enhanced Scalability: Businesses can easily scale their blockchain network as their needs grow.
Increased Efficiency: Eliminates intermediaries and streamlines transactions, improving productivity.
Enhanced Transparency: Tamper-proof records of transactions foster trust and improve auditability.
Reduced Costs: The pay-as-you-go model eliminates large upfront investments.
Improved Security: Built on secure cloud infrastructure with robust encryption protocols.
Enhanced Customer Engagement: Facilitates secure and transparent interactions with customers, building trust and loyalty.
IV. Industry-wise Key Use Cases of Blockchain as a Service
BaaS is transforming business operations across various industries:
Finance: Streamlines trade finance, secures cross-border payments, and enhances KYC and AML compliance.
Supply Chain Management: Improves transparency and traceability of goods, automates logistics processes, and reduces counterfeiting risks.
Healthcare: Facilitates secure sharing of patient data and tracks the provenance of pharmaceuticals.
Government: Enhances transparency with secure citizen identity management and verifiable voting systems.
V. Region-wise Adoption of BaaS
The BaaS market is experiencing rapid growth worldwide:
North America: Leading with over 35% of global revenues, driven by early adoption.
Europe: Countries like Germany, the UK, and France are at the forefront.
Asia-Pacific: China, India, Japan, and South Korea are key contributors.
Rest of the World: Growing adoption in South & Central America, the Middle East, and Africa.
VI. Why Choose a Prominent BaaS Provider?
Opting for a blockchain app development company that offers BaaS can significantly impact the success of your blockchain initiatives:
Specialised Expertise: Providers possess in-depth knowledge and experience in blockchain technology.
Cost Efficiency: Eliminates the need for in-house infrastructure investment and maintenance.
Time Savings: Accelerates the development process and reduces time-to-market.
