EXTREMELY MILD SONIC 3 SPOILERS (not that it matters, practically everyone but me has already watched it)

i haven't seen sonic 3 yet and it is a shame, but I heard that the spoiler was sonic cd related and I was fine with it at first but then I saw a post saying cd wouldn't be enough plot for a movie and they should mix it in with 06. After sitting in my brain for a bit, I agree, cd wouldn't be fulfilling enough for a whole movie, but I think they should do sonic rush instead of 06. 06 to me feels like it has enough story to be, IDK, the 5th movie maybe, and they would have all of the 5th movie to focus on silver, mephiles, etc, but should focus upon amy, metal and blaze in the 4th movie (more blaze then amy then metal) so blaze AND amy would be relatively developed for the next one. Amy would be introduced in the beginning, have some screen time, get to know the current cast, fall for and get rejected by sonic (I doubt they would make sonic have feelings for any right off the bat, sorry) then get kidnapped by metal, it then begins focusing on blaze, and eggman nega and such. Blaze could have a slightly more stretched out development with Sonic in their friendship but before that sonic and co. save amy so she can play her part in blaze's growth. Sonic teaches blaze about friendship, the final battle ensues and we could still get the ending of sonic rush and it ends with sonic and co. gaining a new member to their family and for the after credits scene they can put silver in. Blaze got her story, character growth, she can now go befriend silver, maybe slightly alter the 06 script so she isn't so.. useless? Is that the right word?

Yea IDK where to go from here but you can probably see where I'm going with this, and maybe this is too much to ask for, maybe I am too blaze biased for amy to shine. I really have no clue, I'm just a random ghost on tumble ig

weird experience i had today

i was looking at my old files to find some old, goofy ass nostalgic stuff right, cuz i like going on nostalgia trips, and i found a weird folder that i didn't recognize

it's just called host, and all that's inside is what appears to be sonic cd, also just labelled as host.

i never did have the game on pc though

You’re on the right blog! I’ve always seen them that way, too; I wrote partner headcanons, 130 and 131, about that exact topic. You’d probably like my clingy tag, which is for them being affectionate, and I also have an entire tag called upLIFTing dedicated just to them carrying each other. It’s mostly him carrying her, as I’ve always headcanoned that she gained a permanent weakness for being carried after Sonic saved her in CD, something that Sonic Mega Drive canonized:

And you can’t just put bangs on a 2’11” character and expect us to believe her devoted, serious, 3’3” boyfriend wouldn’t brush them aside to kiss her on the forehead. It’s her fault for being the perfect height and having bangs, really.

They’re both touch-starved, and I love the idea of Shadow starting to do things that make her embarrassed because he thinks it’s cute, and before long, he’s head-over-heels for her because of that. He’s so used to having to fight and make opponents fear him that I think he’d get a lot out of his actions making someone giggly and happy instead.

So, this may be a bit of a random question, but where exactly do you think Sonic CD is set in the timeline? Before Sonic 2 and 3, or after Sonic 2 and 3?

Do you think Sonic met Amy before or after he met Tails and Knuckles?

I don't consider myself a Certified Sonic Lore Expert but I like to think that Sonic CD happens before Sonic 2 + Sonic 3 & Knuckles because I’m really attached to the idea that Sonic met Amy before he met their other friends. (I think this has been confirmed now? )

I like the theory/ headcanon that Sonic was able to open up and become a more patient guy in general after meeting Amy! I think it also puts emphasis on how normal yet extraordinary Amy is in comparison to their other friends. In the sense that, despite being the most "normal" one in the group she managed to seek out run into Sonic first.

Midnight Vultures-Beck: Good album to clean the house to. Every song a banger. Beck as a person sets off alarms, though 🤔

Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot-Sparklehorse: Genuinely my favorite artist and album of all time. Fall asleep to Homecoming Queen often.

Siamese Dream-Smashing Pumpkins: Fire straight though. Good when you’re in a depressed 20-something mood. Better than Mellon Collie in my humble opinion.

Gorillaz-Gorillaz: The start of one of my favorite bands and objectively one of the best bands in the world don’t fight me on it I’ll kill you.

A TIER-

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots-The Flaming Lips: Solid album. Iconic cover art. “Do You Realize??” always got me feeling feelings

Violent Femmes-Violent Femmes: Top 3 favorite band. Every song went platinum in my household. Would have been higher but reminds me of my mom too much.

Dig Me Out- Sleater-Kinney: Got it because the name sounded familiar. Ended up loving them! Doesn’t sound right if it’s not played loud, though, and considering I live in an apartment, I don’t play it often.

Fear Yourself-Daniel Johnston: Got it because I love “Hi, How Are You” but haven’t been able to find it anywhere. Was pleasantly surprised! Hits the same melancholy spot but slightly more upbeat.

Figure 8-Elliot Smith: My favorite sad boy that definitely DIDN’T kill himself. Not my favorite Elliot album but every one of his albums is A tier personally.

Throwing Copper-Live: bought it on sale with the above 3 but liked this one substantially less. Only redeeming quality to me is the album art.

F Tier-

The Ragetones/Fall Apart-The Ragetones: Saw them play at a shitting basement show. Everything sounds better when you can barely hear yourself think.

Random Thought: Why does all "90's Anime style" fanart just look like Sailor Moon?

Okay, obviously not all fanart looks like it. But if you were to type in "90s anime style" here on Tumblr or DeviantArt at the time of this post, it at least seems to be the majority stand-in for 90s anime aesthetic, right? Especially in the characters' eyes.

Don't me wrong, this is not a knock against Sailor Moon. It is a great anime, and the collective character designs by Kazuko Tadano, Ikuko Ito, and Mari Tominaga among other staff are iconic. So iconic that Tadano was brought back as the character designer for the latest Sailor Moon movies. That is quite the staying power.

But let's be fair, there are plenty of 90s anime out there that can also be used as inspiration. So, here are the names of 11 character designers alongside some gifs of shows/projects they worked on in that role. Some you may not know but you've seen their work, and others you probably know for their distinct art style or association with a franchise.

Things worth noting: First, the years listed here with some anime may reflect when the artists' work started airing, rather than when the anime itself actually started. Some folks listed here enter their projects mid-production in other roles, while others are in the role from the start. Second, each entry will list 1 or 2 projects aired/released during the 90s, but it will be noted if the artist's role continues beyond that with certain franchises. Lastly, these artists are listed in no particular order, so no "top 11" hierarchy. With that said, here's our examples:

the cd dilemma.

description: working behind the counter at a record store tends to be boring, but your boredom disappeared when andrew walked in.

If you walk down the street from the Shaffer Conservatory and turn the corner near a bustling coffee shop, there’s an old record store that you’ll either see on the first glance or just walk past it like most people.

Record stores were not that uncommon in New York City—you could easily walk a few blocks and find some shop that catered to your needs. Some stores were over the top, extravagant, and bright to bring in more customers while others were small, kept to themselves, and had regulars coming in and out their doors. There were apparently many layers to owning a business that most people owned too.

The store you worked at was small and quaint. Nothing really happened there and you basically sat behind the counter, either staring out the window or counting down the hours until it’s the end of your shift. You couldn’t really ask for a better job- plus the owner was really sweet. She prided herself on selling and opening the door to new genres for her customers, treating them like family members rather than customers.

Today was the same as yesterday and the day before that you felt like you were in purgatory—or a time loop—being forced to relive the same day over and over again. I mean, it wasn’t that bad, the shift just felt monotonous in a way. You'd look up every once in a while to see if someone entered the store and you'd go back to scrolling on your phone when you saw no one. It was two pm on a Tuesday, who was going to wander into a record store?

Some deity above must have read your mind and you cursed at yourself for speaking—well, in this case, thinking—it into existence because some random hand—with multiple band-aids wrapped around the fingers—knocked on the counter, making you snap out of the trance that Candy Crush got you sucked in.

“Yeah?” You questioned, looking up to see the guy who seemed to be around your age- and you recognized him as the guy your co-worker was complaining about last week. You gave him a faint smile, turning your phone off and laced your fingers together as you waited for him to continue the conversation. According to your co-worker, the guy was a hard-ass, but you shrugged it off because it was New York. At least half of the people you saw on a daily basis were hard-asses.

“Do you have any Buddy Rich CDs in stock?” Andrew asked, staring at you wide eyed as he stuffed his hands in his jean pockets. You grabbed the clipboard from under the counter, eyes scanning the shipment dates and what was in stock. Today may have been his lucky day because the CDs were in stock and you pointed to an aisle that was near a corner. “Yeah, they’re in that aisle over there.”

Andrew nodded and made his way to the aisle, accidentally bumping into a cardboard cutout of some musician you didn’t know. You tried to stifle a laugh at that and you almost succeeded, but it was like the guy had super sonic hearing or something and he turned his head back at you. You flashed him a grin and a small wave of your hand that he replied with a scowl, grabbing two CDs from the shelf to compare the two. You stared at him for a few minutes, somehow being mesmerized at how he grumbled at the two CDs.

“Which one do you think is good?” Andrew shouted from across the room, holding up the CDs. You raised an eyebrow at his sudden question, squinting to see what he was holding up. You waved him back to the counter when the squinting didn’t work.

“I mean, you seem to know a lot more about the guy than I do,” You quipped, picking up a CD. Andrew looked at you expectedly, fidgeting with his fingers slightly. “Yeah, but I can’t decide. They both have their own pros and cons-” You listened on intently as he went on a long spiel that ended right back where the two of you started: unable to decide on a damn CD.

“Why not get them both?”

“I only have money for one.”

“Fair enough,” you shrugged, stacking the cases together.

You watched him stare down the CDs, almost audibly hearing the sound of gears turning in his head as he mulled over them. You yawned, blinking slowly and seeing Andrew’s eyes on you. “What?”

“Glad to know my problem’s boring you,” owch, biting sarcasm.

You let out a snort, shaking your head. “Look, man,” you started. “Just buy one and if you don’t like it, return it and I’ll give you a refund.”

“What if I do like it?”

“Then don’t… return it?”

Andrew thought about it for a moment before he nodded, pushing one of the jewel cases towards you. Great, he finally decided on one. Plus if he didn’t like it, you get to see the guy again. A win all around. You rang him up and he handed you a few crumpled up bills.

“Andrew,” he stated after you handed him the CD, causing you to tilt your head in confusion. “My name. It’s Andrew.”

“Oh cool,” you replied, giving him your name and pointed to the name tag on your shirt as you did. You listened as he repeated your name back to you, almost like he was committing it to memory. He wasn’t that much of a hard-ass like your co-worker had described him to be. He was interesting, to say the least.

“I’ll, uh, give this a listen,” Andrew held up his newly purchased CD and you gave him a thumbs up. You watched him through the store’s window as he walked out the door, pushing past strangers on the sidewalk.

You shook your head in amusement, going back to Candy Crush. He’ll be back—either to buy another CD or to get a refund, who knows? You hoped to see him again. Maybe you will, or was that just wishful thinking?

A little rant about how I want Sonic Movie 4 to play out because why not.

So, we all know the two characters that were introduced for the movie were Amy and Metal Sonic. While it is true they were both introduced in Sonic CD, the plot for CD is a bit too confusing for a movie script. Also, time travel may be better used for another movie later down the line... *glares intently at Silver*

Ok, so if the plot isn't going to be CD, what would it be? Simple: Sonic Heroes. Except, it can't be. That would be way to many characters to introduce into a movie. Instead, I vote that it only focuses on two of the four teams: Team Sonic (of course) and Team Rose. Let me explain.

The movie would open similarly to how the end credits played out. Sonic is saved by Amy, but before he has time to wrap his head around what is happening, Amy takes out none other than a CHAOS EMERALD. She could make a few comments about Sonic (maybe hinting at a kind of fangirl appreciation toward him from stories she's heard, or simply telling him a little about the robots) but before she can get far her explanation is cut short, and she disappears with the chaos emerald, saying that they're the only things that can stop the Real Villain (aka Metal Overlord, because of course he should be used in Metal Sonic's introduction to cinema you uncultured swine)

Sonic regroups with the rest of the team (Tom and Maddie included), and a race for the chaos emeralds begins. I think it would be fun to incorporate a little bit of the "road-trip" energy from the first movie with a bit of high-stakes Team Sonic shenanigans. This would be great family bonding, and the random fights that break out between the team and "the girls" could make for some interesting plot points.

On the other hand, we're introduced to Team Rose, the female counterparts to Team Sonic. Amy as the lead, Cream as the flight, and... someone else as the strength (I don't think Big is a good fit for this position, but he'd definitely show up in cameos. Behind the scenes things, maybe a little roadblock for the teams as he stumbles to find froggy, and it's revealed in a hilarious montage that he's just been here the entire time since movie one or something). I think either Blaze or Sticks would be a good addition to the team (Sticks would bring more of a comedic sense, while Blaze could potentially tie in to Movie 5 possibly bringing in Silver). Their main motivation would be to stop Metal Overlord from taking over Earth, like how he took over their home in another dimension.

As for Team Rose's personalities, I think Amy should be a bit straightforward, and have great admiration for Sonic in particular. Her crush could slowly develop into an awkward phase, and her teammates would share glances every time she trips over her words when he's mentioned. She'd have to be optimistic and a leader, but it's VERY important she doesn't become a Mary Sue. Let her handle herself, but make her rely on her friends for support. This is important.

Cream probably wouldn't have Cheese with her, since Chao are more mascots in this world. But I can imagine she'd have other abilities beyond her chao companion. She and Tails would share a love of the Chao Gardens, and she could possibly gain a stuffy of Cheese later on. I think it would be adorable to give her a yoyo as a weapon. And again, Blaze and Sticks would have different effects to the storyline, but I do think Blaze is a better pick. She could even act as the speed/leader type for the team if the writers decide they don't want to hold onto Amy's very girlie personality too much.

I know this is a lot of characters, but if it's handled very delicately, I think it could really work. Amy's character would be the focus here, to flesh her out in this movie, and Blaze would be set up more for the next (to truly impact her sacrifice later T-T) The only one that really would suffer from "too many characters" is Cream. Her lack of Cheese and Vanilla might disappoint some people, but we could always reference it. I think she'd still be an important character to bring out Amy and Blaze (since she has close connections to both of them, and would possibly be the relationship bridge for them, being the "little sister" type).

Metal would also have sprinkles of foreshadowing into the plot. His "big reveal" at the end as that gigantic beast needs to be referenced somewhat by the rest of the movie. If they really wanted to add an Eggman-like character, they could have Agent Stone meet Metal (similar to how Eggman met Knuckles in movie 2) and have them join forces. It would be cool to explore the possibility of another dimension/world colliding with Earth, if anything to be a reference to Sonic X.

Idk, sorry for the ted talk. These are just my thoughts, but tell me what you think!

The soundtrack from An American Tail, a Song Sisters album (they were a children’s music duo that I saw several times as a kid in Flint), and two tapes worth of music from JEM and The Holograms.

Surprise! All New Kids On The Block. (WHY did I have two copies of Hangin’ Tough?)

Bangles - Different Light, a cassingle containing a few Polaris tunes from The Adventures of Pete and Pete, and the Wayne’s World soundtrack.

Two of the more obscure CDs I own: Ballistic Biscuit’s All Men Are Free (Door County, Wisco punk c. 1996), and Midnight Creeps’ One Track Mind (their demo EP, which I bought at a show c. 2002).

Other random CDs from the ‘90s and early ‘00s: A Slice of Lemon (Kill Rock Stars / Lookout! Records split compilation), Sissy Havoc - Nine Seven Demos, VMLive Presents: Furious George, The Mr. T Experience - Love Is Dead, Stars Kill Rock (Kill Rock Stars comp from 1993), My So-Called Band - Always Something There to Destroy Me (miss you forever, Chris P.), and Blue Meanies - LiveLiveLiveLive: A Sonic Documentation of Exhibition and Banter.

Three more comps I loved in the ‘90s: Ska Sucks, What’s Mine Is Yours: The Emo Diaries Vol. 1, and Super Scary Monster Party (which contains theme songs from a bunch of different horror movies).

A collection of ‘mix CDs’ I made c. approximately 2000.

The track lists for said ‘mix CDs.’ The reason I put mix CDs in air quotes is that these were not purposefully curated mixes; rather they were just physical backups of songs I downloaded off Napster.

he's so alive, like, I know there is still a small probability that Jim Carrey decides not to return for whatever reason and that's why they keep killing him just in case but also, god damn it he was supposedly killed by a black hole and if I know one thing about wacky sci-fi is that more often than not black holes are space-time portals

like no I don't think Shadow specifically tried to save him like it's good enough he was able to save himself, he had something else to think about, but uuuuuuh big ring of Chaos energy spinning very fast? like? idk all the portals we saw so far in this franchise are rings spinning really fast so like what I'm saying if if the next movie tells me "Chaos energy spinning fast makes a portal" I won't be mad about it, like, yeah why not

and I know for sure it's a black hole because 1) it literally makes a quasar (or well something that looks like it, quasars are much, much bigger but it's an artistic intention come on the objective isn't to be realistic but to convey the idea that this is a black hole) 2) they introduced a mini black hole device in the first part of the movie which is so over the top and it would make no sense narratively to introduce such a random thing if not to use it later

point 2. leads me to ask you to remember how Team Sonic escaped this first mini black hole btw

and I mean, they introduced Metal like he was a terminator and Sonic CD and all so there might be space-time travels y'know like they're kinda hinting at it a lot so I think all that could connect

Story time! ✨

Back when I got into Sonic there were only two games available at local retail stores: SADX and Sonic Heroes. Obv I wanted both and since we didn't have any allowance and no money of our own (aside from tiny amount of change we got for grocery shopping chore), it had to be only one and had to wait for my birthday. A couple of months after I learn about these CDs my birthday finally rolls around and! I get SADX! Of course, we immediately try to install it which it does… but the game crashes right after the intro. Reinstalled, fiddled with the settings, etc. Same results… So we take it to the store with the receipt and everything, the girl there checks the disc out for scratches, then pops it into their PC, installs the game and it works perfectly, she shrugs and says tough luck, no returns for perfectly good CDs 😭 You don't know how many times I rewatched that SA1 intro as it was the only piece of the game I had…

My best friend later let me install the game on her PC but with a prerequisite that we play the game together, so there were some parts I never played with my own hands, and then she had to uninstall the game before we could complete it anyway for some reason I don't remember…

Then another friend lets me borrow his SADX CD that was a repack with pre-rendered cutscenes cut from it so there was no intro for example. It installs and it actually plays! But at random times it crashes (not every session!) and sometimes it freezes our PC, and finally it manages to make it bluescreen. That's when Dad bans the game forever 😭😭

When I got my own laptop though, I was in a very time-consuming university (and then work) and didn't have time for gaming 🤷 So it had to be 2020 for me to be able to replay SADX properly. And hey, it was installed from that very same 2004 CD I got for my birthday =D

I've got an idea about Sonic 4, maybe Amy was the ONLY one who went back in time. Maybe Metal Sonic was from the present time, like someone say Agent Stone or organization G.U.N. created him after Eggman died and sent him after the real Sonic. Say Amy, affiliated with some rebellious organization, went back in time to that moment in the woods specifically to save Sonic when he was attacked by Metal because in her bad future, Sonic dies there to Metal, allowing his creator to take over the world. Amy tells Sonic all this, informs him that she is from the future, and is there to protect him and destroy Metal, after which she will have prevented this bad future from happening. Say the real Metal gets away, but Amy says this is fine because as long as she sticks by Sonic anyway (and all the time) then Metal will come to her eventually and nbd her mission will be a success. She tells him cheerfully that she's going to stay with him starting now and until the danger has passed, with no question as to if this is ok with him or his family.

Sonic reacts to all this information in a snarky way, partly because of her bold attitude, inviting herself over, but mostly because he's offended by what she's claiming would have happened. He, Sonic, would have died there to some random robot in the woods? No way. He tells her that he can take care of himself, insists that she's wrong and that she can't stay. Amy says that she must stay and will be with him wherever he goes no matter what he says, that she went back in time specifically to do this and that he is being silly. Amy then meets the family and they more or less believe her, so she stays. Metal does in fact return and Amy helps kick a lot of butt. Plot.

Bonus: THEN Sonic ends up in the bad future alone by accident. Time stones or something. He sees for himself that everything she'd said had been true. The future without him looks like the bad future stages in the CD games. The Metal of that time becomes aware that he's there and he gets mega PISSED when he recognizes Sonic because Metal concludes that Sonic must have survived him somehow and ruthlessly and determinedly pursues him. He doesn't know or truly care that he's from the past. Wonder what the Tails and Knuckles of such a bad future would be like... I could imagine Tails jerryrigging the copies of Metal into a helpful little brigade, one he gets slightly attached to because he desperately misses Sonic. Knuckles would probably be very protective of his remaining family, Tails for instance, in such a rough timeline.
