my 5th favorite game that i played in 2023 is...
Tumblr media
Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit
in times of Sonic "drought" between major games, i often find myself turning to fangames to keep the flame alive. nobody understands Sonic better than the fans, after all, and Sonic especially has a wealth of incredible talent in its fanbase. Before and After The Sequel were two of my biggest hyperfixations in high school! and following the development of Time Twisted is ultimately how i met my partner – a story i should really immortalize on here one day…
but Sonic isn't going through a drought at all! Frontiers and Superstars both released rather recently… and both are aggressive 7/10s. arguably, Sonic's aggressive 7/10s are some of its most interesting experiences! but Frontiers isn't really my style, and Superstars didn't really do as much for me as i hoped it would.
that brings us to Triple Trouble, which is exactly my style of Sonic game – and one of the most outstanding fangames i've ever played.
Tumblr media
the original Triple Trouble on Game Gear is secretly one of my favorite Sonic games… sure it's crusty, but i love how unapologetically weird and charming it is! bringing its unique ideas to life in 16-bit is an incredible idea on paper, but not everyone has the chops to execute on it – making it all the more special that this fangame DELIVERS on its premise.
the level layouts are open and explorable! the second act of each zone mixes in unique new gimmicks, just like mania! the music is perfectly redone! swapping between sonic and tails at will is a fantastic idea! and all the new content, references, and cute little details feel right at home among the familiar beats of the original. this is about as close to a perfect remake as it gets.
one such little detail that i won't spoil is a slightly obscure Sonic 3 reference right at the beginning of the game that made me laugh my ass off before even getting out of the starting gate – and that momentum continued the whole way through. the way it follows up Sonic 3's story beats in general is a great homage to the whole series, cementing Triple Trouble's place in the classic Sonic "storyline" (if such a thing exists).
Tumblr media
it doesn't just carry itself on references, either – filing off the crust from the original game's mechanics turn them into a fresh new experience, and the remake even brings new ideas to the table! so many little details that made me squee, so many big new moments that made it feel fresh, without any of it feeling heavy handed or underbaked.
so if you've never played the original Triple Trouble, this remake is the perfect way to get into it! and if you've never (or barely) touched classic Sonic, this is a best-in-class example of how much fun it is. it's well worth your time.
…did i mention it's free? it's a fangame, of course it's free! go play it!!

Might take a break from this Sonic "tour" (not really a marathon anymore), but I finally beat Sonic 3... mostly
Tumblr media
Yeah, I ain't beating that final boss. At least, not until someone makes a mod for Sonic 3 A.I.R. that puts rings in it so it's at least marginally beatable. I'm honestly flabbergasted that mod doesn't exist for Sonic 3 A.I.R., but does for Sonic 2 Absolute despite that mod being like four years newer. (Ftr I'm not normally this mean, but I hope whoever kept taking the rings out of these final bosses got fired and never found work again.)
WARNING: If you could see the masterpiece in Sonic 3 that my stupid, Kirby-loving brain couldn't, then maybe don't click on "Keep reading"
Would I be castrated for saying that I really don't get the love for Sonic 3? It's honestly frustrating because most aspects of the game are phenomenal (easily the best soundtrack, graphics, mechanics, and story of the classic games), and yet the actual game has so many tedious, obnoxious, insufferably long levels that in the end I can't call it any better than kind of good. And there's nothing more frustrating to me than a platformer with so many great aspects just to fall apart on the level design. I'd honestly revisit even the worst zones of the other games over at least half of the singular acts in this game. (Yeah, Scrap Brain, Studiopolis, and Metallic Madness all sucked, but at least they didn't take like 18 minutes to suffer through.)

My favorite genre of Sonic fangame is: "Remake of a portable Sonic title that takes the base idea and spirit and makes something WILDLY different that gives the game a whole new lease on life."

IDW SONIC READERS, PLEASE READ THIS!!!!
I am begging you. On my hands and knees. Begging. More so than anything else I’ve asked of this fandom.
Please please buy the Fang miniseries when it comes out
Tumblr media
Don’t just read it. Buy it. I will admit that I’m very guilty of reading through a lot of IDW Sonic through…less than legal means, and I know I’m not alone in that regard. But I think it’s really important that for this miniseries in particular, you actually go out and buy the damn thing. Show your support with your dollar.
Really think about it for a second—they gave Fang his own miniseries. Fang! An underutilized, underrated fan favorite for sure, but hardly a mainstay of the series. I’m sure that this was at least somewhat prompted by Superstars, where Fang is a major antagonist…but Bean and Bark weren’t in that game, and it already received its own online promo comic prior to the game’s release (notably, with Fang as the star).
Classic Sonic stories have also exclusively been relegated to one-shots in IDW, not a full on miniseries like what Fang is getting. Basically all of the IDW Sonic miniseries we’ve gotten so far have been plot relevant side stories to the main IDW comic that focus on side characters with little to no involvement from Sonic himself. Tangle and Whisper, Bad Guys, Impostor Syndrome…the only odd man out besides this Fang miniseries is Scrapnik Island.
Really think about it for a second. FANG is getting his own focus comic BEFORE KNUCKLES.
And that’s why it’s so important that we buy it.
I think Sega is using this comic to test the waters to see if people like Fang and want to see him in more future projects—be it comics, games, or even cartoons. But there’s more to it than just that.
See, Superstars hasn’t been doing that great. I know I said in an earlier post that people seemed to like it, but I retract that statement. It was damned by faint praise at launch, and now most of the discussion I’ve seen surrounding the game revolves around its flaws (chief among them being the middling OST and that the Steam version stealth installs an Epic Games service along with the game). No sales numbers have been projected as of writing, but it’s definitely been beaten out by Mario Wonder and Spider-Man 2.
So, Classic Sonic games aren’t doing too hot right now (I’m sure that many modern fans are jumping for joy at the prospect). But the classic characters are.
People really like the extended classic Sonic cast, just as much as they love the extended modern cast. From my experience, the two fan favorites are Mighty and Fang. Fang stands out to me in particular for a couple reasons: people were really upset that Sega specifically said no to Fang, Bark and Bean coming back after Ian snuck in a reference to them in IDW Sonic #3 (using their old team name from Archie, the Hooligans), and the fanmade 16-bit remake of Triple Trouble, Fang’s debut game, received private praise from many members of Sega and Sonic Team. People like Fang and the media he’s in, and Sega is starting to take notice. That’s why we’re getting this miniseries.
That’s why it’s so important that the miniseries sells well. If the big boys at Sega and Sonic Team see Superstars’ iffy reception but see Fang’s comic sell above expectations, then Sega will want to continue to use Fang (and potentially other “classic” Sonic characters as well) in more narrative driven projects. That means modern Sonic.
“But Sega won’t let any classic Sonic character into a modern Sonic project!” I hear you thinking. And to that I say, so? Sega changes its mind all the time. Remember that whole two worlds nonsense? That was thrown out with in Tailstube. Characters debuting in Boom and the comics were previously barred from the mainline games, but they’ve broken that “rule” in both Speed Battle and Frontiers. Hell, they’ve even been talked out of some of their sillier comic mandates, like characters not being able to wear different clothing.
For all their flaws, Sega does listen, and money speaks louder than anything. If this miniseries fails, Sega will just assume that people aren’t hot on Fang or the extended classic cast anymore and throw them back in the bar. But if the comic sells well, then Sega might take it as a sign that, hey, people like this character (and his two lackeys), we should put him in projects that fans are more interested in. Mighty and Ray probably wouldn’t be too far behind, especially given Mania’s success. Whether that means comics or games, modern or classic, who knows. What’s important is that it sends the right message to Sega, and they will listen to their consumers. That means us. If we don’t support this miniseries now, we might have to wait another thirty years for another chance.

Two Greedy Vermins
Posting this as a way to celebrate #SonicSuperstars! Here's our favorite Irish Foxy, Fergus and alongside Nack the Wea-- Whoops, I mean Fang the Snip-- er, I mean Hunter! Any true Sonic fan may recognize this mischief making Jerboa from "Sonic Triple Trouble" during the Game Gear days! I whipped this pic together to help promote a certain Sonic fan-game that was released last year: Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit, a fan made remake that reimagines the Game Gear masterpiece as a Sega Genesis sequel to Sonic 3 & Knuckles, with promotional comics included to build up an original story! In my mind, Fang was an underrated character that deserved plenty of recognition from today's generation of Sonic fans, and I'm honestly glad he's gotten some more recognition from the community! Heck, we're even getting a short IDW comic series starring him, and that's what excites me! ^ ^ For some reason, I kept imagining Fang being voiced by Fergus' actor, mustering up an Australian accent even though he's Irish. (Which suits Fang more considering he's part Jerboa, a rodent creature found in Australia), and that was the moment I hatched an idea of drawing Fergus and Fang together! But wish Fang having a Jersey accent and using the term "Mook", I see him sounding more like Rocket Raccoon, which kinda makes sense, but hey, beggars can't be choosers, am I right? Fergus is copyrighted (c) by Disney. Fang the Hunter is copyrighted (c) by SEGA, Sonic Team

Nintendo Game Cube - Sonic Gems Collection
Title: Sonic Gems Collection / ソニック ジェムズ コレクション
Developer/Publisher: Sega (Sonic Team)
Release date: 11 August 2005
Catalogue Code: DOL-G2XJ-JPN
Genre: Compilation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Sonic Mega Collection (GameCube, 2002) was an enjoyable compilation for the GameCube, but longtime Sonic fans were miffed by the conspicuous absence of the highly regarded Sonic CD originally for the Mega CD. Sonic Gems addresses that glaring omission, and tosses in a bunch of miscellaneous Sonic titles for good measure, namely Sonic the Fighters which is the star of the show, alongside a console conversion of the PC version of Sonic R which was a Sega Saturn title originally.
Sonic the Fighters is a fighting game featuring the characters of the Sonic universe and some new, created only for this game, such as Bark the Polar Bear and Fang the Sniper. It is very fun to play, and the graphics are Virtua Fighter style. Sonic CD still plays excellently, and it is worth noting that the version of Sonic CD used in this collection is based on the 1996 PC version which means higher quality animated cinematics. As for Sonic R, well, the PC version played like a dream (the Saturn original played pretty good with the analogue controller), and it holds up here. That eccentric soundtrack by Richard Jacques and T.J. Davis never disappoints.
There are also six Sega Game Gear titles. Sonic 2 (which is different from the 16-bit Sonic 2), Sonic Spinball (the 8-bit versions were not released in Japan), Sonic & Tails 2 (Sonic Triple Trouble), Sonic Drift 2 (Sonic Drift Racing in Europe), Tails no Skypatrol and Tails Adventures.
This collection also had some bonus Mega Drive games. All versions got Vectorman and Vectorman 2 (both made by Bluesky Software, and both were graphics masterpieces), but Japan got 4 more - Bonanza Brothers, and the three Streets of Rage games. Bonanza Brothers is one game I have played already, although I chose to play the PC Engine Super CD port first due to how addicting that music was. There is also a Museum where the user can view various artwork, screenshots, videos and other content.

Sea Tail Troubles
The Sea Tail, otherwise known as the Sea Fox, is a submarine-like transformation that Mecha Tails can take to help Tails traverse the water in Tails Adventures. A notable detail of it is that it has an orange stripe near the drill. This isn't the Sea Tail's first appearance, however. It's first appearance is within Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble, also known as Sonic and Tails 2. Something to note is between the two appearances, they share notable design differences from eachother. Such as the glass being wrapped in white toward the bottom of the glass, or the lack of the orange stripe on the Triple Trouble design. Below is an image showing the two Sea Tails.
Tumblr media
(Triple Trouble's Sea Tail sprites were ripped by PixelMarioXP on The Spriters Resource) Curiously, however, in the Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit remake by Noah Copeland, not only are you able to traverse an area strikingly similar to Tails Adventures' Lake Rocky, but you are also placed into the Sea Tail! (see image below.)
Tumblr media
However, even though it is a remake of Triple Trouble, it uses Tails Adventures' Sea Tail. While not game-ruining, it is important to notice the differences between the two Sea Tails, considering that they come from different time frames.

emily reviews the GG sonic games
over the past few months i beat the GG sonic games with all chaos emeralds. well, here are my thoughts!
Sonic the Hedgehog What a sweet game. Forgiving but satisfyingly challenging, and with a sense of style the others really can't match. in many ways this game's presentation is actually more polished than its 16-bit counterpart. It makes me feel more within the World established by ancillary media in JP of the time than the main game does. The role this game has in the story of its developer, Ancient, also adds to the appeal. I would give this game a smooch.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 This is such a contrast with 1 that it's a bit of whiplash going in. the art is raw and unpracticed, and the gameplay is aggressive toward you in the way old platformers frequently will be. But after giving in and switching from GG to the MS version (after beating Mecha Antlion once on GG to prove myself), i was able to meet the game where it wanted me to. The challenge became fun, and it was satisfying to make it through to the end. Making the 'special stage' a true final zone with vaporwave stylings based on the 16-bit special stages is an inspired use of limited rom space, and was really fun to play too. they haven't made a zone like Crystal Egg before or since. oh yeah and toot toot sonic warrior originated here - what a landmark tune for this game to have to its name. scrappy game altogether, but in a way where you're happy to see it succeed :)
Sonic and Tails ('chaos') Feels like Aspect is trying to establish their own voice as a sonic dev here. The portable and motobug springs are smart ideas that lend themselves to new puzzle structures, and the rocket shoes are just kind of silly. The experimental special stages are interesting, but it was definitely a miss that when you unlock one, it takes you out of an act without the opportunity to go back and finish it later. The premise that Eggman has an emerald and that's why you only need to get 5 is funny, but I respect it as a way for them to rebalance the challenge in a way they were happy with, without sacrificing the established lore that there must be 6 altogether. Aqua Planet feels weirdly prescient of Hydrocity. Electric Egg feels like someone wasn't finished with Scrambled Egg from the last game, and needed another attempt. I enjoy the tube puzzles so that's fine.
Sonic and Tails 2 ('triple trouble') I initially bounced hard off of this one. The special stage entry restrictions felt too restrictive - 50 rings PLUS find ONE monitor hidden somewhere in the stage. It combines the mainline S2 and S3 concepts into a double challenge. Once you're comfortable enough with the game though, its actually very manageable to plot your route. The visuals do great work translating the S3&K style into 8-bit, probably the prettiest of these aside from 1 (although thats obviously subjective). knuckles piloting a boss vehicle is funny. Fang is funny. I wish they hadnt taken away his gun. Big props to this game for committing to its own core mechanics for sonic - they put in some great challenges making use of balling-up-from-spring and the strike dash.
Not sure if i'll bother with Sonic Blast, at least for the time being. on the whole though these games are fun if you don't expect them to be exactly like the mega drive games.
