It kind of confuses me when I see people talking about cavaliers as if the Nine Houses have established and normalised some radical social role of human sacrifice. It really doesn't seem to me like the role of a cavalier is that simple. The only members of their society we've seen who weren't horrified by the idea were the Tridentarii.

The career soldier, who was born into the military class and trained for that role since birth, believes no necromancer should ever have to see their cavalier die. The other child soldier was killed while putting himself between his cavalier and danger. The heirophant of the Emperor's law who draws on his cavalier like a battery—a level of exploitation the other Houses condemn—turns against the will of his God when he witnesses the sacrifice expected for lyctorhood.

The deliberate sacrifice of a cavalier is not normalised. Not even in the front lines of their military. The role of a cavalier is exploitative, of course, and that's where the interesting part begins. Is it any more exploitative than a king whose knights are trained to die in battle? Than employees who are forced to work or starve? Than the existence of a noble class, or capitalism?

Human suffering exists in any society, and in most societies I know of, much of that suffering we inflict on one another through exploitation. The Nine Houses are not unique in this respect. I am very much in awe of the worldbuilding in this series, tho, that it has managed to defamiliarise human suffering and class dynamics as to show us their grotesquerie plainly without ever tipping over into anything as straight forward as direct allegory.

(there will still be a post tomorrow to keep on track)#The original 3 panel comic idea was fine but the point of this new schedule was to take time to push myself a bit more.#I was taking a look back through some comic artists I felt inspired by #and I really loved how Lynda Barry fills her gutters with patterns and doodles!#Obviously I'm not going as absolutely wild with it as she does but it was a great exercise!#I truly think the gutters are the most important and most overlooked part of any comic. There's lots going on in that space.#It's the same with timeskips. The implied movement between moments that we don't see changes depending on how wide that gap is #You're here for the funny tags so here's some that ties this time talk together:#I think LWJ was thinking about that second note from day 2 but it took him 7 days of hazing to commit it to paper.#I think he sends it a day later and immediately regrets it. Chasing down the messenger and everything.#You know if something actually happened to his brother he would never ever forgive himself for putting the bad vibes out there.#Third time skip was the hardest because there was so many possible flavours of jokes here. Day 8/9 was a personal favourite.#day 14 was also funny (week by week). I think the debate on 'how long does lwj take to catch feelings' is more or less:#'how long does it take for him to arrive at a particular stage of grief and yearning (and awareness of it all)#This is a symphony. There is an act by act structure. Every day he is fighting to keep his old sensibilities. He is losing so badly.#(I'll be returning to the main comic soon but there is more of this AU to come!)

Danny wasn’t happy. It wasn’t funny! Usually he just had a ghost tail when flying really fast, like super speed, not all the time! It’s not funny Clockwork, you’re used to having a tail, he isn’t!

What do you mean it’s permanent?! He needs his legs! Clockwork!! He wouldn’t have agreed to the adoption if he knew he’d lose his legs!

…Okay, that was a lie, Clockwork was a great parent who encouraged his chaos and enjoyed screwing over assholes like the Observants. But still! He looks like some sort of snake person now! No he doesn’t want a nap, he’s not a baby!

Thinking again about the weird design choices Illumination made for King Boo. Specifically his mouth size.

Like, the difference in size between the movie and the games is legitimately jarring.

I can’t help but wonder if he’s designed that way with the intention of eventually having him speak full sentences and display nuanced facial expressions in a future movie.

Now, there are fan animators that have shown King Boo speaking and displaying a range of emotions while staying true to his original design, but you can’t deny that there is a bit of quirk in the way he forms syllables with his lack of lips and 4 enormous protruding top teeth, and I’m sure these little quirks would only stand out all the more on an ultra-high-def-movie-quality rig.

I’m not saying that Illumination made the right choice by altering his mouth as much as they did, but… if my guess is correct, and they’re modeling him with the intention of giving him a more involved role in the future… I hope they find a workaround that lets King Boo keep his hideously enormous maw, because his little cameo in The Super Mario Bros. Movie doesn’t quite look right.

#King Boo #Luigi’s Mansion #The Super Mario Bros Movie #this might just be me huffing hopium for a future Luigi’s Mansion movie #but looking at the TSMBM King Boo design… they actually gave him a top lip #a top lip that partially covers his teeth the way a normal mouth would #it puts a lot of space between the eyes and the mouth compared to the original King Boo #but you can’t deny the shape is definitely better for forming syllables #But as far as returning to the original design goes #I think they should either stylize the way his rig moves so that the animators aren’t in a constant war with the way his face is structured #(it would actually be kind of cool if he had a more boneless squash-and stretch style of animation #given that he’s a giant phantom ghost orb and all)#or lean completely into the natural quirks that come with the OG facial structure #but this theory comes from someone who is NOT an animator I just speculate a lot #someone who does know anything about 3D animation feel free to chime in because I’m just yammering #Youtube

sukugo is a crack ship TO YOU. to me it's a perfectly legitimate ship, held back within the canon universe principally due to adherence to classic genre structures and not by lack of character compatibility

#sukugo #not to be a crack ship definition purist. but it doesnt qualify as a crack ship if the characters are totally compatible #and if a major reason that the ship is not canon is just because the characters aren't main characters and thus not the focus of the story #what i mean is that jjk has a pretty normal structure for a coming of age martial arts story #it has the young protagonist who is the focus of the story #who has a wise teacher who is killed by the villain to provide the protagonist with more motivation to defeat the villain #gojo and sukuna were both doomed by the narrative in that the narrative followed this classic structure. so long as yuji is the protagonist #and main character then gojo needs to die to allow him growth and focus #and sukuna needs to be defeated by yuji #sukuna and gojo's relationship could only develop to a limited extent within their fight because its only setting the stage for the final #fight between yuji and sukuna #BUT THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY MANY EXCHANGES BETWEEN GOJO AND SUKUNA THAT DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY ARE COMPATIBLE AS A SHIP IF THEY HAD #TIME AND SPACE TO DEVELOP THE STORY IN THAT DIRECTION #“teacher and villain set up to be on opposing sides but finding understanding and an equal and love in each other” is totally legit dynamic #thats the premise of tian ya ke/word of honor #what im saying is that sukugo are very compatible as a ship #but to have a ship like sukugo be believable in canon. their relationship needs to be given time to develop #more time than jjk is able to give it within its structure without more genre subversion and without them being main characters #jjk

I have a question for your slashers boys it's maybe a bit random but what's their morning routine like? like what do they have for breakfast? (if they have any at all) and who's more of a morning person Sun or Moon? I already have a feeling who it could be but maybe I'm completely wrong.

Anyway

I Hope you have a good day/night!

Sun's up at like. 5 am. Sometimes, he'll come out into the living room to see that Moonie is still out perusing the neighborhood. But Moon's usually home by sunrise see what i did there

Sun showers, gets himself ready and dressed, makes coffee, does a bit of tidying up, laundry, other household chores. Can see him throwing some bread in the toaster or popping a frozen meal in the microwave for breakfast. Bet both he and Moon like sugary cereals 😝✨.

Moon's pretty low-energy, grumpy. Likely to get extra snappy in the morning. There are few words exchanged during this time of day, save perhaps some reporting on what Moon saw during the night. Moon showers (most of the time), eats, and then dozes on the sofa until Sun's ready to head to the arcade—around 9. Moon drives. All of his vocalizations are grumbling growls and forceful sighs. As soon as they get there, Moon usually makes straight for the breakroom couch. Sun will roll his eyes and start on getting the arcade in order.

I think this is one of his favorite times of day. Sun doesn’t really like to be alone for too long, but the arcade is home and Moonie’s enough of a presence in the break room to put him at ease.

He turns on the arcade speakers, then hums and dances his way through his morning checklist. Restocking the prize counter, vending machines, doing any cleaning that he felt was necessary even after the closing scrub down last night. He looks to see if there's any parties or scheduled events, makes orders from the computer and phone, double triple checks all the machines and games to make sure the place is spick and spam before they open midday.

#i rly like this ask!#gives me the space to carefully consider the logistics of their routines like the nerd i am #moon seldomly sleeps in a bed #he has a hard time sleeping at night in general #dca slasher au #ask #the only thing Sun doesn’t check in the morning is the play structure #there’s been more than one…incident… wherein Sun suddenly finds that he cannot physically exit the play structure #and his voice won’t reach the break room #so moon crawls through and gives it a wipe down at closing #but even he has a hard time maneuvering #and sun doesn’t think he’s thorough enough with the cleaning #so once they hire someone even slightly smaller than them (just about everyone) that responsibility falls to them
