Honestly, shout out to the Spiderwick Chronicles (the book series). You know they actually do know their fairy tales when they have one of the most lore-accurate ogre depictions in English-speaking modern literature.
Oak and hyacinth thinking riding a fucking kelpie through the ocean and expecting it to not drown them was a good idea and then immediately almost dying has me so dead
Hyacinth fucking half drowning “oAk tHiS WaS a BaD iDeA”
I just finished rereading the Spiderwick Chronicles and...man, I had read them as a kid but I'm so glad I decided to re-read them as an adult. I've gone through ups and downs with my art but sometimes I'll just have a story like this rekindle why I love making art so much.
I remember loving the drawings as a kid, but now as an adult I find myself absolutely entranced when looking at the illustrations, and I love that I can find a whole new appreciation for art like that. And not to downplay the writing either, the descriptions are so incredible, I genuinely love the characters so much and they're so endearing to read about all over again.
Anyways, for what I actually drew! At the back of the edition I have there were some unused sketches by Tony DiTerlizzi, and one of the sketches had the characters Thimbletack and Hogsqueal playing checkers together from a scene in the last chapter of the book. Something about it was just extra adorable and at first wanting to just draw it myself it then spiraled into drawing a whole illustration based on it haha. Overall I'm really happy with how it turned out!
I was a PA on this for about 10 days and I was SO excited to see how it would turn out. So sick of studios pulling this shit. The article says they're planning on shopping it around at least so maybe it won't be erased from existence? Still fucked that shows they delete from their platform can be pirated but if they refuse to ever publish them then there's no chance of everyone's hard work ever seeing the light of day :(
( my art commissions are OPEN ! please check out my pinned post if you are interested. )
a nixie !! a creature based off germanic mythology in my favorite series of all time: The Spiderwick Chronicles ! nixies are one of my favorite creatures in the series and i had to draw one lol
absolutely can NOT wait for the tv show haha (even though nixies will probably not be in it :,)
no background i know :( they are not my specialty, and i didn't want it to come out mediocre and bring the piece down, perhaps one day in the future one will be added !

No choice. No contest. No take-backsies.
GOBLIN!!
GOBLINGOBLINGOBLINGOBLINGOBLIN
Reasons:
1: sharp teeths
2: scream
3: small
4: fast, run on all fours, zigzag away from predators and pesky humans
5: clawed and webbed hands like a frog, amphibious, night vision, big mouth for eat bug, big ears for to hear musics
6: live in forest, live in cave, live in attic or basement
7: GREEN
8: make silly noises
9: can hoard collection in cave without judgment or told to clean up, cozy cave time
10: according to The Spiderwick Chronicles lore, goblins are toad/frog/feral dog/batlike creatures, and they are born without teeth most of the time so use sharp objects instead like sharp rocks, animal teeth, nails and screws, broken glass, etc, and some have small nonfunctional faerie wings on their backs (because they are fae)
