1967 marked a transformative era in the USA - a time when Beatlemania reigned supreme and the British Invasion left an indelible mark on American pop culture. Vogue US, wanting to capture this zeitgeist, shone the spotlight on Twiggy - London's teen sensation and the embodiment of the swinging '60s. Barely 17, with her transformative partner (and once her hairdresser) Justin de Villeneuve guiding her journey, the duo touched down in Los Angeles in May 1967 for an unforgettable Vogue moment🌷

The scene? A glamorous afternoon at the Beverly Hills residence of the legendary Sonny Bono and Cher. And as Twiggy herself recalled in a 2018 BBC Radio interview, "I was at this party, and suddenly there was this motorbike revving up: it was Steve McQueen!" The king of cool himself, already an Hollywood icon, alongside his elegant wife Neile Adams, had graced the gathering. Drinks, dance, and delightful company!🍂

We're back with a new name, What's New to Netflix, and an accidental crossover episode this time around, where we go through all of the new titles coming to Max in October 2023 instead of Netflix. Feeling confused? Don't worry, so were we, but we're seeing this through, as this will be part one of a two-episode special that will be all about stuff coming to Max.

Then we review some stuff that's actually on Netflix when we take a look at the philosophical sci-fi alien film Arrival from 2016, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, directed by Denis Villeneuve. Afterwards, Johnny Depp plays John Dillinger in the gritty historical crime drama Public Enemies from 2009, directed by Michael Mann. And finally, we talk about Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues from 2013, with Will Ferrel reprising his role as Ron Burgundy, directed by Adam McKay.

All of this plus, like we mentioned, we totally goofed up and went over everything coming to Max instead of Netflix! What a way to start our new rebranded podcast! Hopefully, if we do something like this again in the future, it will be intentional. But we still think this will be a cool treat for all of you, and if it isn't, let us know!

so we can all agree that the newest 2WEI song (take the crown) is the trailer song for an Antarctic Empires Emerald Duo pg14 movie where Techno is a gladiator who earned his freedom and has vowed to destroy the government that enslaved him and Philza is an old demigod banished to a solitary plane of existence for five decades after attempting to run a coup against the ruling class.

They meet on a battlefield, Techno having joined up as brute muscle and Phil having used some minor illusions to pass as a quirky avian and join the bombardment team. Combining some similar plot beats as Oceans 11 and Atlantis: The Lost Empire, they gather a specialized team of insurrectionists, anarchists, battle mages, and warriors to take down the imperium from the inside, eventually planning on restoring the nation to the democracy it was in Phil’s earliest memories. But will they manage it, or will their bloody pasts and violent present seat Technoblade on the throne as the Antarctic Emperor, with Philza as his right hand, the Angel of Death? (Spoiler, the second option. It’s the most controversial film finale decision of the decade.)

The movie is filmed in a style somewhere between Dune 1, the Prince of Egypt, and Topgun. (denis villeneuve is too busy and too expensive, but it’s clear they’re taking inspiration. Bold colors and lighting and a lot of shots of the sky, wildlife, architecture, or of characters’ hands.) It’s scored by an up and coming indie musician, working under the consultation of Ludwig Gorannson in his spare time as a pet project, though his association with the film doesn’t really come out until it Smashes the expected theatre income in the first two days of release and critics start Raving about it. Techno’s actor is nominated for an Oscar for one of the most compelling intricate portrayals of ptsd and platonic devotion in modern cinema, but doesn’t actually get the Oscar.

Tumblr is flooded with gif sets of Techno in the Obligatory No Armor After Gladiator Fight Scene and the Late Night Vibing With Phil In A Loose Poet Shirt scene (firelit, lots of closeups of his eyes, the film is obviously attempting to express his complex emotional state and his deep relationship with Phil, and is failing miserably at doing Anything but making him hot. The internet is ✨gay✨ about it, because when is the internet not?) Also most of the simps are calling Phil a dilf.

Fit MC is the fan-favorite side character, his four scenes and nine lines of dialogue are clipped and edited and giffed and memed into the dirt. (His armor and prosthetic, the makeup and costuming department say, were the hardest thing to do in the entire film, which is why he isn’t in too many shots.) Though, a close second is Niki, who is played by a woman built like a brick house who doesn’t wear sleeves, so…. Yeah. We all know what the response is there. The effects, including Phil’s wings, are almost entirely practical and the only real places it gets iffy is Steve, the giant war polar bear that’s pretty clearly clipping through a few snowbanks here and there. Nobody can agree on which characters are morally reprehensible.

Within a few years, very few people outside a dedicated fan base have seen it and a few assume it’s made up like Goncharov. It’s also, for some ungodly reason, been labeled a Christmas film. (most of the plot happens in the ice and snow, hence ‘Antarctic Empire.’) I guess nothing says ‘Christmas spirit’ quite like ‘unmitigated violence, platonic yearning, and overthrowing oppressors.’

Yeah alright let’s talk Tarkir

Getting this out of the way: I do not care about Alesha, so if you were coming here ready to hear anything about the first-ever transgender girl out of Magic*, sorry to disappoint.

Actually, yeah, I’m gonna talk about this for a little bit. I understand Alesha means a lot to some people, and I’m not saying they’re wrong to feel that way. I’m sure there are people who had to fight to make Alesha openly & canonically trans, and I’m not saying that this was meaningless, wasted effort. It’s nice to be able to point to someone and say, see, there’s a place for people like me here. I was excited about it at the time and I wasn’t even into Magic back then.

But like c’mon, y’all, she’s not really a character, right? She gets one story, the thrust of which is, “this character is trans, and that’s basically fine.” Alesha exists to be part of the banner image of the internal WotC LGBT employees’ monthly newsletter. She exists to be the discord avatar for every third trans girl into Magic. She exists so a massive corporation can point to her as evidence that they care in some nebulous way about trans people, and she costs slightly less than paying someone to, say, actually moderate the hate speech comments on their vids of Autumn Burchett’s pro tour games.

All of which is to say, they don’t actually care. You know this. Individual staff, writers, artists - sure, but they’re not the ones who make the final decisions. And you and I deserve better from our stories, and we’re never going to get that from fucking Hasbro, right?

So here’s my pitch: seek out actual queer stories, and I’m not talking about contemporary YA shit with a marketing budget. For readers of this specific blog I’d recommend looking up “Attack Helicopter” by Isabel Fall (you should still be able to find it online). Stories where the texture and structure of thought are queer and trans are revelatory. You don’t need to beg for crumbs from a megacorp’s table.

I’ve come to think of the current era of MtG art (let’s arbitrarily say from Kaladesh block to the present) as the “Magali Villeneuve era”, and if I’m being totally honest, I kind of hate it. Everything is technically competent, clearly lit, and immaculately detailed. Everyone has amazing cheekbones. It is so, so boring. I’m not at all saying she’s a bad artist! Sometimes, as with Kaldheim, she is very nearly the only person in a set making good art. I’ve featured her work on here many, many times.

What I am saying is that her work always has this, like, objectivity to it that feels detached and even alienating, like we’re looking at these characters through a powerful telescope. There’s no stylization, and dare I say no style.

The reason I bring her up in a set in which I will not be reviewing her work (sorry, Narset fans), is that Steve Argyle makes for an interesting comparison. They are to my untrained eye very similar artists: the sharp linework, the combination of dynamics and detachment. The major difference is that Steve’s art is substantially hornier and substantially male-gazier.

And goddammit, at least that’s something.

I’m not sure why Viktor made this orc look like a ripped lizard man. None of the other orcs in this block look like this. Maybe he thought “krumar” was a species of lizard folk, when in point of fact a krumar is, checks notes, an orphan of the Mardu raised by the Abzan who killed their parents in a twist of worldbuilding regrettably reminiscent of a strategy used in real-world genocides. Whoops!

I did the mantis bit in my Battle for Zendikar post, but I thought I’d actually dig into what the appeal is here: raptorial forelimbs. The inescapable, serrated hold of something that could slice you open as easy as thinking, but hasn’t yet. The smoothness of chitin, hard without being inflexible. The many strange articulations. And then either you make out or it eats your head, and it is not up to you which.

It doesn't matter whether they're niche films or d'essai or blockbuster, I used to adore going to cine-forums and watch every kind of genre, they always leave you something to bring home

Ohhh my god, Ari, you have no idea just how badly I wanna hug you right now. Films and filmmaking are one of my special interests and I could literally talk your ear off about the industry!

Please keep in mind that these are just my personal picks/opinions, and I am almost certainly forgetting a few because I'm doing this off of memory. I'm also not including any films that I haven't seen yet (there are a few classics that I embarrassingly just somehow never got around to seeing that are currently in my watchlist) so if you notice any strange omissions that's why. The less said about the glorious battle between the spectral form of A.J. Foyt and the somehow-animate form of Dan Gurney the better. You can read all about it in the major newspapers if you want, although the journalists didn’t really get the essence of the story. What’s important is that I got a brand new Honda Accord out of the whole deal. Well, not brand new. It’s like... ten, fifteen years old. It’s 2002 still, right?

I thought I had been so clever, having fulfilled my obligations to the multiple-time Indy 500 winner to defeat his All American Racing nemesis (this, somehow, despite the fact they had never raced against each other – go figure) and then slip out the back door, towards  the docks using my newfound ability to read basic road signs, and then onto a roll-on-roll-off ferry to go home the slow way. After that, it was a simple two months at sea, making friends with all the stevedores. Most of them weren’t named Steve, but all of them got really pissed by the fifth or sixth week when I wouldn’t stop making that joke, even the ones who initially started out pretending they didn’t speak English to avoid me at the Maersk mess hall.

As soon as we docked, I was gunning the understressed F-motor, telling it about all the cool turbochargers and turbocharger accessories I was going to bolt to its carapace in order to reach its true form as a highway abuser. Unfortunately, the chassis didn’t agree with me. Anyone here could have told you what was going to happen next. Without the annual deposits of leaking oil and poorly-applied road tar, the Accord’s virginal unibody metal had not become accustomed to the atmospheric road salt of my land of origin. I didn’t even make it to the end of the docking ramp before I was sitting on the ground, holding a windshield and the least-ferrous parts of the steering wheel in my lap.

Well, be that as it may, it was still an incredible adventure as an illegal occupant and full-time street racer at the behest of the shade of a famous geriatric racer who I had never met. I learned a lot about myself, and I also got a chance to try that new flavour of Chip Star at the parking area. They almost got it to taste like potato now, if you can believe that.

As I began the long, but familiar, process of hitch-hiking the thousands of kilometres home from the coast, I couldn’t help but wonder what ol’ A.J. Foyt was up to now. Probably going much faster than me, hurtling through the stars in pursuit of the ultimate speed. That’s when I heard a joyous little toot toot and turned to see a Suzuki Super Carry kei van barely turtling up the hill towards me. It had been sitting on the boat behind me the whole time.

The drivers’ window rolled down. “Get in, asshole,” barked Jacques Villeneuve. Home at last.

Getting to know teacher!eddie from Notes on a Scene

Thanks to @myosotisa @jo-harrington and @deathbecomesthem for kicking off this brilliant idea and to @br0ck-eddie for tagging me!

Here's the original post with the questions, if you feel so inclined!

What story is he from? What kind of story is it (Fix-it fic, Older!Eddie, Rockstar!Eddie etc)?

teacher!AU inspired by my steve series the kids aren't alright; it's a quasi-coming of age story, in that, eddie grapples with being an adult (which, like, don't we fucking all?). New Girl vibes, for sure cut with some miscommunication and chaos because i am nothing if not predictable.

What inspired you to write this Eddie?

he was a secondary character in TKAA and i loved him so much that i thought he deserved his own story.

What are your favorite headcanons about him/share something you never shared in your story?

omgomg okay. eddie stays pretty firmly in his wheelhouse with films, he knows what he likes and what's comfortable - not a huge risk taker in that regard. but reader is a bonafide film teacher and sets out to educate him on the finer points of cult classics and horror. and he's down for it, especially since most of the time when the credits roll he's either balls deep or on his way there. BUT THEN. they watch Bladerunner 2049 and eddie has the gall to FALL ASLEEP!!! jail, jail for a thousand years! reader is shocked and dismayed, denis villeneuve did not go through all that effort for eddie to pass the fuck out because "the score was really soothing," or "nothing happened for the first hour." (he's so like me fr)

What does he wear on a casual day? On a dressier day? What does he wear to bed?

so, while there is a dress code for faculty at school... eddie, predictably, does whatever he wants. mostly jeans and a band tee for day-to-day shenanigans, liiiiike chasing band kids who can't stay in formation on the field or whatever. keeps a jacket in his office because the one time he didn't he was forced to borrow steve's letterman jacket and all the kids asked when the wedding would be.

dressier fare involves whichever jeans are the cleanest, maybe a flannel over the band tee and his leather jacket.

to bed? absolutely nothing. and yes, it will bite him in the ass.

Favorite foods?

a simple man of simple pleasures, he's not picky. pizza, burgers, the works. he does have a tendency to pop tums like they're candy though. hasn't quite worked out the correlation between what he eats and why he feels like shit after the fact. like i said, growing pains.

Tell Us About His Family/Friends

his bff is Trouble from TKAA and steve by proxy. robin'll do in a pinch if the lovebirds are too busy sucking face. but the ace up his sleeve is always wheels aka nancy byers.

and ofc wayne. he keeps trying to tell the old man to retire but he's even more stubborn than eddie is. they have dinner once a week and go fishing in the summer. well, wayne fishes and eddie tries not to fall out of the boat.

he's around teenagers being a teacher and all. so he's pretty varied in his tastes now and remembers being their age and thinking his discovery of metallica or dio was the defining moment of his life and he's not about to yuck their yum. mostly he's exposed to tiktok samples from the band or hellfire kids, and then whatever the fuck is playing at the loft. generally a highly specific playlist or top 40 depending on whose home at the time.

What are his views on romance? On sex?

fun fact: eddie is a HUGE romantic. like, will watch when harry met sally by himself after a shit day and cry. that being said, the college to career pipeline hasn't afforded him many opportunities to show that side of himself. he hasn't had a "real" relationship in a minute, mostly just quick meaningless fucks to keep him sated. so, while he is a romantic, eddie has pretty much separated sex from that equation in this story. consciously or not, he's looking for a deeper connection, a spark that can be fanned into a flame.

Is he optimistic or pessimistic?

he's a realist. working with teenagers helps because they're always there to knock you down a peg and deflate your ego. but he also sees and hears some shit from the kids that breaks his heart.

Where or with whom is he most comfortable?

places he's comfortable would be his office, the loft, reader's house, the hideout, and the soundbooth just off of reader's classroom.

the people he's comfortable with would be the gang (steve, trouble, robin, vickie, jon, nancy, argyle), wayne, and the band or hellfire kids. hop's a mixed bag because he's eddie's boss and the former chief of police - depends on the day and if he needs a favor.

What are his views of his future? What are his hopes/dreams?

hmmm. he definitely wants connection what with everyone around him coupling up and settling down now. he could go either way with teaching? yeah, everyone says it's a calling and yadda yadda and he loves the kids (well, some of them), but if something better came along he wouldn't feel obligated to stay in hawkins.

as far as hopes and dreams go... he wants wayne to retire, and, ideally, let eddie help out with some things like bills or whatever. he's open to the possibility of settling down with the right person. and he really wants to get a dog or something. (watch him end up with an axolotl)

because he deserves better. he deserves to be happy and catch a fuckin' break for once.

During a recent interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub while promoting the season finale of Silo, Rebecca Ferguson spoke about what audiences can expect from Dune: Part Two:

"I’m smiling so much right now. It's so fucking good. I get emotional talking about it because I love Denny [Villeneuve] and I love Greig [Fraser] and I love the team. But dude, number one is phenomenal and big and grandiose, and then you go close-ups and the imagery and the acting. Yeah, it's all great. It's fucking nothing compared to number two. Number two, it's like a fucking gut punch. It's unreal."

She went on to say, "I haven't seen the film. I've read the script. I've seen the footage. I've come onto set when I'm not filming, which by the way I don't do because I'm too busy, tired, and I don't really care. I'm done. I wanted to see the setups. I wanted to see Austin Butler do what he was doing. It's unbelievable. There are no words. The costumes, [Jacqueline West’s] costumes, what Austin's bringing to that character, what Christopher Walken does. I mean, it's unreal."

Ferguson also spoke about her experience while getting to work with the new talent joining the franchise:

"Their characters are huge and important, and they are emperors, and they are princesses, and they are brutal killers, and they are gory. They are fully and utterly needed to make the spectacle that it is, and it's the crème de la fucking crème of actors. That's what it brings."

Dune: Part Two will continue the journey of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a young warrior who is considered to be the protagonist of a prophecy by the Fremen. After losing his home during the last installment, Paul is determined to improve his abilities in order to defeat the Emperor and bring freedom to the worlds that need it the most. In the meantime, he has to figure out why he's closely connected to Chani (Zendaya), given how he constantly saw her in his dreams before they even met. Mysteries will be revealed and the fate of Arrakis will be decided when the sequel lands on the big screen this fall.
