Student’s Passion for Mental Health Drives Impact

Grace Kelly and Sharon Justice at the scholarship luncheon
Helping a fellow student receive life-saving mental health care is just one way that Grace Kelly has gone above and beyond to support the well-being of fellow Longhorns. Such efforts have garnered her the Sharon H. Justice Leadership Scholarship that honors a former UT Austin dean of students.
“This scholarship means the world to me. If I can give back to the University any fraction of the percentage Sharon has, I will have done a good job in leading, shared Kelly, a senior Plan II Honors and human development and family sciences major from McAllen, Texas.

Justice influenced the lives of many students during her 24 years on campus, including several Student Government leaders who created this scholarship to honor her legacy of putting students first. This philosophy is core to the Division of Student Affairs’ programs, spaces and resources.

Besides serving as Student Government president, Kelly has a strong history of taking on leadership roles like the scholarship recipients before her. As vice president of risk management in her sorority, she was the first point of contact for students in crisis. Kelly connected many peers to Counseling and Mental Health Center and Longhorn Wellness Center resources, as well as seeking professional support for them in some instances.
“This experience underscored the importance of mental health resources and solidified my resolve to address this issue within our campus community,” she added.

This determination dates back to Fall 2021, when she entered college during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kelly joined club soccer to connect with fellow Longhorns – key to enhancing her well-being during the hybrid learning environment. Being a member of the Plan II Pre-Medical Society helped redirect her career path towards addressing healthcare issues in public policy, rather than her original plan to pursue medicine.
Additionally, she served as organizational chair in the Plan II Mental Health Alliance, and she volunteers with Austin’s SAFE (Stop Abuse for Everyone) Alliance. Her commitment to serving others through student life and volunteer opportunities caught the attention of the scholarship committee.
“She optimizes what we are looking for — she’s got it all, the ideal recipient. She’s not just one thing,” said Sharon Justice, former associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students (1985-2001). What’s ahead? Kelly looks forward leading the student body and collaborating with University leaders through the spring. After graduation in May, she plans to take a gap year before graduate school, pursuing a career in public policy with a focus on mental health.

The Senator and The Machine
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. * I was a Senator once. ‘Seems like a lifetime ago. I wasnt a “big deal” Senator. Not in D.C. Not even a State Senator. No,…

The University of Michigan students filled its student government with anti-Israel activists for the school year.
The candidates ran on the “Shut It Down” platform that promised “to halt the activities of student government, including funding to the scores of UM student organizations, until the university fully sells off any UM endowment investments connected to Israel amid the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.”
Those candidates won the presidency, vice presidency, and two dozen roles.
Did they think the candidates weren’t serious? The activists vetoed the budget, stopped funding student groups, and shifted the money to the anti-Israel crowd.
The decisions ticked off students and the administration.
Again, the developments shouldn’t shock anyone:
“The Shut it Down movement ran on a completely transparent platform,” said Alifa Chowdhury, the 2024-25 student body president. “This is really to send a message to regents that you can’t just give us, student government leaders, a lump sum on money and expect us to stay silent with that. The point of student government is to make our voices heard.” In addition, Chowdhury said, the outcome of the student body election was a litmus test and showed that “the majority of students on campus want divestment to happen and the regents have yet to listen.”
Michigan’s Rugby Football Club receives $20,000 from the student government, which goes to “a quarter of its budget.” Players and donations help the rest.
The club will do what it can to make up any missing funds, but the members have prepared themselves to make cuts:
“We are going to be operate,” Grover said. “The big thing is we will have less operating cash, so we probably won’t be able to focus on our endowment growth, which will be preventing us from developing and becoming a varsity program, which is our goal. It will strain our students, and we probably might not be able to grow long-term.”

The Bad Kids meet Kipperlilly CopperKettle (pt.1 | ‣pt.2)
Jawbone looks nonplussed at the interaction! 😭
Kipperlilly has aced Junior Year! ;0000
Kipperlilly: "Good luck with the buttcrushers"
😭😭😭😭
Fig asks Kipperlilly what changes she sees happening for Elmville! 👀
Kipperlilly: "My platform is about equality, equanimity, and fairness under the rules. And- In the past, there has been an eccentricity to the bureaucratic and administrative decisions of the Aguefort Adventuring Academy that has favored some students over others."
💀💀💀💀 RIPPPP!!! That's SO TRUE!! BUT ALSO RIPP!! 😭😭💀💀 I feel like that's kinda breaking the fourth wall in a way! 😂😂💀💀 To say that some students (the actual players) are more favored than others! 😂💀 Brennan is so good. 💀✋
Zac pointing out Kipperlilly's eyes! 😭✋ Like- Legit though! 😭✋
Adaine: "That girl is worse than Kalvaxus. I know that Kalvaxus was bad. She is our greatest enemy yet."
Murph: "Can multiple people find the rogue professor?"
"Rogue class is actually just the rogue students like- comparing notes and finding clues and lessons and puzzles that the rogue professor has left hidden around like- in trapped areas and other stuff like that."
"So, you've been going here for years, you've done all your classes, but you've still never met the teacher. The teacher just leaves calling cards in like- cat-burgled second-story windows."
Nobody has ever met the ACTUAL rogue professor (except for Kipperlilly apparently)! The rogue professor just leaves calling cards! 😭😭✋✋
"The Rule is, if you find the rogue professor in a year, you ace all of your classes for that year."
